LAS VEGAS – The Titans better hope what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas. In the Sin City, the Titans committed plenty of sins to get them beat in a 20-10 loss to the Raiders. The loss halted the positive feelings coming from last week's win at Arizona, and it dropped the team to 1-5. Quarterback Cam Ward threw a touchdown pass late, but the Titans sputtered on offense for most of the day and turned the ball over three times. While the defense battled, and did its part to keep the game close, this wasn't a day for complementary football, as the Titans couldn't muster up much offense on a day when Ward was sacked five times, and was responsible for all three of the team's turnovers. Ward finished the day 26-of-38 passes for 222 yards and an interception. Ward also lost two fumbles on the day. The Titans were forced to play catch-up football from the get-go, and they couldn't do it. The Raiders took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 50-yard field goal from kicker Daniel Carlson on their opening possession. While the Titans defense created havoc early, providing consistent pressure on Raiders quarterback Geno Smith, the offense struggled to get anything going. Then, late in the second quarter, disaster struck. That's when Raiders linebacker Devin White sacked Ward deep in Tennessee territory, forcing a fumble in the process. The Raiders recorded it at the Titans two-yard line, and cashed it in a short touchdown pass from Smith to tight end Michael Mayer to make it 10-0. The Titans appeared to be headed for points at the end of the first half, but Ward was hit as he threw the ball, and it was intercepted. The Titans trailed 10-0 at halftime. The Raiders then stretched the lead to 17-0 midway through the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Ashton Jeanty. The Titans finally got on the scoreboard with 1:08 left in the third quarter on a 46-yard field goal by kicker Matthew Wright, which capped an eight-play, 51-yard drive. But the Titans couldn't make it much of a game after that, as the Raiders extended their lead to 20-3 on another Carlson field goal with 7:14 left to make it 20-3. A one-yard touchdown pass from Ward to tight end David Martin-Robinson made it 20-10 with 3:03 left, but it was too little, too late. Daniel Carlson is a two-time All-Pro kicker with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was originally selected in the 5th round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings but after just two games played, he was released and picked up by the Raiders. In 2021, he led the NFL in field goals made with 40 and the next season, he set an NFL record for most 50+ yard field goals made in a season with 11. For the first time since the Reagan administration, and when the Raiders called Los Angeles home, the Las Vegas Raiders defeated the Green Bay Packers, who had won eight straight games in the series. All it took was an end zone interception by Robertson on a deep ball to Christian Watson after Raiders All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson missed two field goals for the first time since the second game of his rookie season, when he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders ended a three-game losing streak, and the schedule looks promising with the woeful New England Patriots coming to Las Vegas on Sunday before the Raiders head to the equally inept Chicago Bears a week later. Promising trend: Spillane preached takeaways throughout the offseason, into training camp and throughout the start of the season ... despite never having an interception and only recovering one fumble in his five-year career. Two picks against the Packers sent a message for a defense in desperate need of big plays. His first INT set up a Carlson field goal late in the second quarter and was the Raiders' first score off a turnover this season. Las Vegas entered the game as one of two teams -- next week's opponents, the Patriots, were the other -- without a point off a turnover this season. Troubling trend: Jimmy Garoppolo turning Davante Adams into an invisible man and essentially ignoring him in the first half, when the Raiders had an opportunity to jump to a big lead. Consider: Adams had just one target before halftime, a catch that went for 12 yards. Before facing his old team in the Packers, Adams had accounted for 39% of Raiders targets this season, highest in the NFL. QB breakdown: It wasn't his prettiest outing but Garoppolo, back after missing last week's loss at the Chargers with a concussion, did just enough even though he threw an interception for a fourth straight game, the longest such streak of his career. The Raiders have also committed a turnover in 12 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. Daniel Carlson is the starting kicker for the Las Vegas Raiders. Daniel kicked at my alma matter, Auburn University for four straight years, where he had a tremendous career and became the SEC's all time leading scorer. He was selected in the fifth round by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFL draft, but after a rough game in Minnesota, Carlson was cut and was picked up by the Las Vegas Raiders where he's been ever since. He has been the NFL's leading scorer In two of the last three seasons, and just last year he signed a big contract extension locking him in with the Raiders for the next four years. I really enjoyed hearing his perspective on the uncertain times in his career as a newly married man and the significance of the stability provided by a four year contract as a father of one with number two on the way. As an Auburn guy I've rooted for Daniel throughout his entire career, and after getting to chat with him it only reinforced my perception of him as a strong, humble dude with a calm confidence about him. There is nothing to not like about this guy. On the field he has ice in his veins. He's as clutch as they come. Off the field he lives a life deeply rooted in faith and devoted to his young and growing family.
