Following its success as a 45th annual Telly Award winner in the DEI category, we revisit a 2023 conversation with Alicia Roth Weigel, an activist profiled in “Every Body," a new documentary exploring the lives of intersex people who are born with a combination of male and female biological traits as she discusses the intersex community, gender identity and the state of LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. Conversation recorded on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
Writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie joined the Global Women's Summit to discuss how political polarization is driving book bans, and how she envisions a different way of teaching American history. Then, political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel and Montana State Rep. Zooey Zephyr spoke about how they're challenging the gender binary and the politicization of gender in the United States. Conversations recorded on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023.
Is there a homo bro code? A man hooked up with his casual boyfriend's roommate. Then the boyfriend moved away and they broke up peacefully. Now the caller is worried about resuming his hook-ups with the roommate for fear his ex's friends will find out and revolt. Does this happen in gayland? A woman is willing to indulge in hot-wifing to please her husband. She met a new guy, but finds she gets so worked up and horny that it eats up all the headspace in her already busy life. How can she learn to chill out and sleep with another dude already? On the Magnum, Dan speaks with Alicia Roth Weigel, intersex rights activist and author of “Inverse Cowgirl.” They talk about what it means to be intersex, how there may be many more intersex people in the population than we assumed, and how humans are on a gender/sexuality spectrum. Don't miss this one. A queer woman and her girlfriend have been together for 15 years and they raise a child together. Their relationship has always been open, but the caller's partner only dated men…until now. She has fallen in love with another woman who lives far away. This creates a logistical burden, as she has to leave the caller alone with the kid when she goes to visit, not to mention the emotional threat this new woman brings. The caller does not want a new lover to be a part of her kid's upbringing. The partner does. Oy vey! Q@Savage.Love 206-302-2064 Find Alicia Roth Weigel on Instagram at xoxy_alicia.

Alicia Roth Weigel, author of the memoir Inverse Cowgirl, is back to discuss her row with conservative radio host Stephen Crowder, and why it's in the interest of activists to state that 2% of the population is intersex. Director Julie Cohen, best known for her Oscar nominated film “RBG”, crafts a moving and eye-opening exploration of intersexuality in her new theatrical release, “Every Body.” By focusing on the lives of three intersex individuals – actor and screenwriter River Gallo, political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel, and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall – Cohen foregrounds the ways the medical establishment and popular culture have historically denied the complexity of intersexuality by insisting on the existence of only two sexes. Julie speaks to Tiller about the incredible story that became the genesis of her film (3:30), finding her three star characters (10:00), society's intolerance for gender ambiguity (18:03), her method of simultaneous filming and editing (26:31), and screening the film for the intersex community (29:01). When Academy Award®-nominated, Emmy®-winning filmmaker Julie Cohen (“RBG”, “My Name is Pauli Murray”) came across the NBC News archival footage of sexologist John Money and his patient David Reimer, she knew that this story had legs. But what she couldn't have anticipated is that this dark chapter in the history of gender identity would lead her toward what ultimately became her groundbreaking new documentary “Every Body” – a major new film about Intersex people. Making her third visit to Top Docs (but her first without frequent filmmaking partner Betsy West), Julie joins Ken to discuss her celebration of people who identify as the “I” in LGBTQIA+. Who was John Money and why was his work on gender identity so consequential — and harmful? How did she connect with the three film's main participants, River Gallo, Alicia Roth Weigel and Sean Saifa Wall, and why did she choose to center the film around their stories? And in what ways are these three activists now leading the fight against unnecessary surgeries? With its focus on Intersex people and their long overdue fight for justice, “Every Body” is a film that “everybody” can and should embrace. Released by Focus Features, “Every Body” is now in theaters everywhere. Academy Award-nominated, Emmy-winning director Julie Cohen speaks with host Dr. Janeane about her latest film, EVERY BODY - a revelatory investigation of the lives of intersex people, created in partnership with NBC News StudiosCohen directed the project alongside producers Tommy Nguyen and Molly O'Brien and consulting producer Shana Knizhnik. Executive Producers are Elizabeth Fischer, Liz Cole, Noah Oppenheim and Andy Berg. The film tells the stories of three individuals who have moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods after each decided to set aside medical advice to keep their bodies a secret and instead came out as their authentic selves. Actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him) are now leaders in a fast-growing global movement advocating for greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries. Woven into the story is a stranger-than-fiction case of medical abuse, featuring exclusive footage from the NBC News archives, which helps explain the modern-day treatment of intersex people.otbseries.com
