One of our favorite power couples is back! The AP first dubbed them the Transgender Power Couple. Journalist Erin Reed was formerly the digital director of The American Independent. She currently writes for the Los Angeles Blade and Harpers Bazaar.. She is a researcher who tracks anti-LGBTQ+ legislation around the world and helps people become better advocates for their queer family, friends, colleagues, and community. Reed also is a social media consultant and public speaker. Her fiance is Zooey Zephyr, member of the Montana House of Representatives from the 100th district. Zephyr was a vocal opponent of multiple anti-LGBT bills introduced during the 2023 legislative session. During a floor debate on April 18, 2023, Zephyr admonished those who supported Senate Bill 99, which prohibits gender-affirming medical and surgical care for minors. She first commented, "If you are forcing a trans child to go through puberty when they are trans, that is tantamount to torture, and this body should be ashamed." When this remark triggered an objection from Republican majority leader Sue Vinton, Zephyr replied, "The only thing I will say is if you vote 'yes' on this bill and 'yes' on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands." This led to a massive attempt by the state Republicans to censure her and silence her. Months ago we enjoyed a rigorous conversation with these two about the state of transgender rights, and today we get their insights on that subject from the purview of the DNC, plus discussion on current issues.

Just two days until the South Carolina Republican primary, Donald Trump remains well ahead of Nikki Haley, who's vowed to remain in the race for the GOP nomination. Meanwhile, the Alabama Supreme Court's controversial ruling that frozen embryos are considered children is quickly becoming a political issue, and threatens GOP efforts to win over voters in November. Plus House Republicans turn their attention to the annual CPAC conference, even as a government shutdown could be just weeks away. This year has brought a new level of anti-democratic behavior, particularly in state houses and legislatures. In March, Rep. Mauree Turner from Oklahoma was censured for offering a protester the use of an office in the aftermath of an arrest. In April, two Tennessee state representatives, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, were ousted for speaking up for their constituents protesting against gun violence. And then in May, Rep. Zooey Zephyr was censured for her vocal opposition to a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors. The retaliation experienced by these elected officials hints at the growing vulnerability of the right to express dissent in politics and government, a worrying trend. The rise in bans attacking the LGBTQ community is being met with protest, the foundational American mechanism we have for showing disapproval and standing up for our values in our representative democracy. When that right to dissent is threatened, we all are threatened, and the LGBTQ community is put even further at risk. Joining us today to talk about this silencing effect are Rep. Zooey Zephyr from Montana and Rep. Mauree Turner from Oklahoma.

Air Date 5/9/2023 Today, we take a look at the hyper-polarization of our era and the anti-democratic instincts of the right taking hold in state legislatures. Building on a decade of gerrymandering and voter suppression within a structurally undemocratic American system that has helped Republicans create minority rule in many places and unearned super-majorities in others, they have now turned to simply ejecting their elected political opponents from fully representing their constituents. Sam and Emma host Jane McAlevey, Senior Policy Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley's Labor Center, to discuss her recent book Rules to Win By: Power and Participation in Union Negotiations. They begin by running through updates on the WGA strike, an impending airline strike, the fascist attacks on Zooey Zephyr, fascist attacks on healthcare in Oklahoma and Florida, Vice Media's impending bankruptcy, and the Rangers' devastating loss last night, before parsing through the Senate Judiciary hearing on the Supreme Court's ethics issues. Jane McAlevey then joins as she walks Sam and Emma through her experiences working in, and writing about the labor organizing process, from her time with the AFL-CIO in the ‘90s through her multiple texts that attempt to address the disconnect between labor mobilization and labor organizing, and understanding organizing as community outreach rather than focusing on those already aligned with your goals. Next, McAlevey dives into the challenges of the unionization process, with union-busting remaining prevalent well after a successful vote and throughout the bargaining processes, the importance of having community support and solidarity to bolster the long and draining battle, and the networks community organizing can create. She also looks to the case studies that she explores in her books, tackling the importance of building on worker knowledge and transparency in the bargaining process, and before they wrap up the interview by walking through the recent renaissance of labor consciousness in the US, the importance of youth labor activists, the future of labor action, and why capitalists want more of the gig economy. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the WGA strike and the impact of the streaming era on labor compensation, Nancy Mace's stance on Ron DeSantis' Florida abortion ban, Rudy Giuliani giving away the game on legal disenfranchisement, and Fox's post-woke fantasies of the future for Elon's Twitter. Dr. Matthew from the University of Texas walks through his presidential fantasies, Emma grapples with the Rangers' playoff exit, and the MR Crew tackles the absurdity of the streaming era, plus, your calls and IMs! The House voted to pass the debt ceiling bill on Wednesday, but it is not expected to pass the Senate and President Biden has threatened to veto it. Disney sued Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis alleging that he has overseen a "targeted campaign of government retaliation" against the company. Montana Republicans barred a transgender lawmaker Zooey Zephyr from the House floor over her opposition to a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for trans youth.
Montana Republicans voted to censure Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the first openly transgender person to be elected to the state's legislature. The vote comes after Rep. Zephyr last week said supporters of a proposed ban on gender-affirming care for young people would have “blood on their hands.” And in Florida, Disney sued Governor Ron DeSantis for revoking the company's long-standing control over its Disney World Resort. The suit claims DeSantis engaged in "a targeted campaign of government retaliation" after Disney publicly denounced Florida's so-called “Don't Say Gay” bill last year. And in headlines: House Republicans narrowly passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and cut government spending, Sudanese civilians are scrambling to escape the ongoing violence in that country, and hundreds of Freddie Mercury's personal items are going up for auction this summer.Show Notes:Montana Human Rights Network: Donate – https://tinyurl.com/bdf22fskTransVisible Montana – https://transvisiblemontana.wordpress.com/Montana Federation of Public Employees: Our MFPE Family Stands With Rep. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Adrienne Buller, Senior Fellow at Common Wealth, to discuss her recent book The Value of a Whale: On the Illusions of Green Capitalism. Then, in a pre-taped conversation, Emma sits down with Mark Himmelstein and Marshawn Brewer of the bargaining committee for Fordham University graduate students, to discuss their recent organizing efforts and yesterday's walkout from classes. First, Emma runs through updates on Manchin's future, Disney's lawsuit against DeSantis, Tucker's firing, Montana's fascist GOP ousting Zooey Zephyr, Schumer's meeting with Elon Musk, and Trump's myriad legal battles, before diving into Tucker Carlson's weak debut post-Fox. Adrienne Buller then dives right into her recent piece on green capitalism, first exploring how the title parodies an IMF article evaluating the capital worth of whales to the global economy, and parsing through neoliberalism's emphasis on financialization and market-driven solutions. Next, Buller steps back to assess green capitalism as a whole, understanding its recognition of the climate crisis as progress while still recognizing how it seeks to exploit said crisis, walking through the myriad “green” tactics, like carbon pricing/capture and ESG, and exploring how they work to incentivize rather than regulate, thus providing more than enough loopholes for capitalists to offshore and offset exploitation. Wrapping up, Adrienne and Emma look to Biden's IRA as a perfect example of green capitalism's market-based solutions, the importance of grounding solutions in justice, and why social justice can't prioritize profitability. Then, Emma is joined by Mark Himmelsbach and Marshawn Brewer as they walk through the impetus for the unionization of Fordham's graduate students, from the University's failure to respond to COVID to New York's growing cost-of-living crisis, and explore what its like to battle against an institution that refuses to recognize you, much less your struggles. Wrapping up, they dive into the union's recent walkout, where the union's hopes lay, and how those of us outside of the union can help. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they tackle Bernie's Biden endorsement, watch Crowder get eviscerated by an up-and-coming Amy Schumer, and Wayne from Iowa holds Emma accountable for her child-labor-phobic comments. They also tackle Dwayne Wade's recent comments on Florida's growing fascism, Nico from San Francisco helps the crew parse through SF's anti-homeless fury, and Ron Johnson doesn't give a sh*t about your crops. Marjorie Taylor Greene capitalizes on her committee seats with some staunch homophobia, and Robert from Georgia dives into the Tucker Carlson firing, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host Amy Wilentz, Professor of Literary Journalism at the University of California Irvine and contributing editor at The Nation, to discuss her recent piece in The Nation entitled "Haiti, April 2023: Soon There Will Be No One Left to Kidnap." Then, they're joined by Djene Bajalan, professor of history at Missouri State University, to discuss the upcoming Turkish elections. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Kevin McCarthy's impending austerity bill, the nomination of Julie Su, John Roberts' ethics crisis, Fox's opposition file on Tucker, and Bernie's Biden endorsement, before diving into a former Tucker producer's testimony on what's been coming out of Fox News. Professor Amy Wilentz then steps back to walk through the impact of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake in cementing the US-backed rule of Ariel Henry over a country with devastated infrastructure that was falling more and more into the hands of capitalists and gangs, before analyzing the complete neutering of Haiti's governmental forces, be they military or police, the connections between the cops and the criminals, and how these elements bolstered the rise of gangs and human trafficking in the country, leading to its current moment of intense upheaval. Wrapping up, Amy, Sam, and Emma explore what solutions are even viable, and why an election might only serve to reinforce the current moment of chaos. Djene Bajalan then dives into the nationalist discourse ahead of Turkey's election, before walking through the role this election plays in Erdogan's path to supreme power. After tackling the impact of the Turkey-Syria earthquake earlier this year and Erdogan's fascistic response, Sam, Emma, and Djene wrap up the interview by tracing the political movements that have existed alongside Erdogan's reign, and what to expect from their post-election check-in. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the attacks on Kevin McCarthy's austerity from the right, the silencing of Zooey Zephyr on the Montana house floor, Candace responding to Crowder with infinitely more grit than he provided, and the importance of building new housing.
