LAREDO, Texas - Legendary workforce development leader Blas Castañeda has been mentoring high school students for 49 years. The retired president of CTA Global Solutions will join with Area Health Education Center to hold his Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on March 27.This event recognizes the exceptional academic accomplishments of students participating in CTA's mentorship career development program. The ceremony takes place at Falcon Event Center, 7718 McPherson Road in Laredo, starting at 6:00 p.m. on March 27.“The mentorship career development program pairs experienced community leaders with high school seniors to provide career preparation, foster personal growth, and develop essential skills for university success. Through guidance, support, and networking opportunities, the program aims to assist students in successfully navigating the university admission and enrollment process,” said Blas Castañeda told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.“CTA Global Solutions and AHEC are committed to empowering the next generation of leaders by providing scholarships to deserving students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a dedication to their future careers,” Castañeda said.Castañeda became a well-known figure along the Texas-Mexico border when he chaired the Texas Border Coalition's education and workforce development committee. His career included more than three decades in the higher education realm as chief external affairs/economic development officer at Laredo Community College. Gov. Rick Perry appointed him to the Texas Workforce Investment Council. Gov. Ann Richards appointed him to the Texas Council on Workforce and Economic Competitiveness. He holds a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Trade. His resume includes an eight-year tenure as Laredo city councilmember and he was an active member of the Eagle Ford Consortium Tri-Chair Workforce of South Texas. The Guardian secured an in-depth phone interview with Castañeda. The Guardian asked him why he started a mentoring program.“In the neighborhood where I grew up, barely anyone going to college. The whole reason for that was mom and dad didn't have the money to pay for the college. So that was one of the reasons. The other reason was, when I was growing up, everybody had to go work. We used to go up north and work every year for, oh, maybe close to 20 years, working in the fields picking tomatoes and corn and lettuce and cherries and even pick up cotton. So we there was a major inopportunity to go to school,” Castañeda said.Castañeda added: “Over the years I have helped tons of students get to university. Today, they're engineers, they're nurses, they're bankers, they've got their own business, all over the place. A lot of them are here in Laredo, but a lot of them went out, and they're in different parts of the country. So, I'm very happy that my 49 years of community service really paid off for a lot of people.”Here is an audio recording of the Guardian's in-depth interview with Castañeda:Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

It's Wednesday, January 22nd, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Indian Christian suffers miscarriage when extremists strangle her Sadly, a Christian woman in central India suffered a miscarriage earlier this month after tribal relatives beat and strangled her. Kunika Kashyap was about six weeks pregnant. She was visiting another Christian who was sick. The local tribal leader believed she would pray for the sick person and began videoing to capture evidence of a perceived crime. The leader, along with his wife and daughter, then assaulted Kunika.  Her husband said, “It was only God's doing that enabled her to escape from three people continuously beating her from all sides.”  Local Christians told Morning Star News, “We have been facing strong opposition for the past few years from the tribal village headman and the villagers.” Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in India. According to Open Doors, India is the 11th most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. In Matthew 5:10, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Trump withdraws from pro-abortion World Health Organization President Donald Trump signed over 200 executive actions on Monday after beginning his second term as president.  Calling it a “big one,” Trump signed an executive order for the U.S. to withdraw from the World Health Organization.  Trump ordered the withdrawal over the group's mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic. And LifeNews notes that the World Health Organization spends over 10% of its budget promoting abortion.   Trump also signed an executive order for the U.S. to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. LifeSiteNews.com notes that the climate agreement supports abortion as a way to supposedly fight “climate change.” Trump to reinstate soldiers who lost jobs over COVID shot On his first day back in office, President Trump also promised to reinstate thousands of military members who lost their positions for refusing to get the COVID-19 shot. TRUMP: “This week, I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the COVID vaccine mandate with full back pay.” (applause) The military expelled about 8,400 troops who objected to the shot. This included many who objected for religious reasons. Trump's Border Czar open to pause legal immigration In an interview with Rob Finnerty on NewsMax, Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan vowed to go after criminal illegals first, reports Real Clear Politics. HOMAN: “President Trump and myself have been very clear. We're going to concentrate on public safety threats and national security threats right out of the gate. That's our priority. We're going to go for the worst first. And I find it hard to believe any elected official doesn't want public safety threats out of their communities. I would think that's your number one responsibility is protecting your community.” FINNERTY: “So, would you move to prosecute any governor that stands in your way and harbors illegal aliens?” HOMAN: “Well, I would ask the Department of Justice to, I mean, I'm not a prosecutor. I'm a border czar. But when I was an agent, many years ago, I've arrested U.S. citizens for harboring and concealing. So, if I'm going to arrest U.S. citizens for violating those statutes, if would be something DOJ would decide, but I'd be pressing for it. Absolutely!” FINNERTY: “We've had between 12 and 15 million illegals cross in the last four years. Do we need immigration at this point, legal or illegal? Do we need to just pause immigration for a little while until we can get this under control?” HOMAN: “Look, I think it's the biggest national security vulnerability I've seen in this nation. And then we've got over 2 million known got-aways. We don't know where they came from, why they came here. They weren't arrested; they weren't vetted. We know we got 3,500% increase in people on terrorist watch list being apprehended at our borders. So yeah, I think we need to shut the border down. We need to get control the border. We can't keep bailing out buckets of water. We got to plug the hole first.” Former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards died Former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards died Monday of brain cancer at age 67, leaving behind the largest abortion chain in the nation, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Richards headed Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018 and remained active in pro-abortion activism afterward. The daughter of Texas' last Democratic governor, the late Ann Richards, she revealed last January she had been diagnosed with incurable glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of cancer with a survival length between just 12 and 18 months and an adult survival rate of just 17 percent two years after diagnosis. At the time of her publicized diagnosis, Dr. Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life America, said, “Richards is facing the end of her own life. Many prayers must be said for her – to pray she will repent of her abortion advocacy and the killing of her own baby.” She noted that Cecile Richards publicly admitted in 2015 to aborting her fourth child because she and her husband “decided that was as big as our family needed to be” and that “[i]t wasn't anything more dramatic than that.” Miller said, “To kill another human being and say ‘There's no more to it than that' – is bone chilling.”  During her 12-year tenure at Planned Parenthood, Richards presided over the abortions of an estimated 3.5 million preborn babies (almost half of whom were likely female), whose lives she dismissed as not “really relevant” to the discussion of abortion.  Her time leading the abortion giant also saw sharp declines in actual medical services, like breast cancer screenings or prenatal care, while abortions rose by 11 percent. Plus, Planned Parenthood's practice of selling aborted babies' organs was also revealed during her tenure.  U.S. cancer mortality rate declines A new report from the American Cancer Society found the cancer mortality rate continued to decline in 2022. Cancer deaths declined 34% from 1991 to 2022 in the U.S. That translates into 4.5 million deaths averted. However, the report found that cancer incidence has increased gradually among women and young Americans.   College champions, Ohio State Buckeyes, champion Christ And finally, the Ohio State Buckeyes won the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday. The team defeated Indiana's Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34 to 23 for the national title. It's the first time the Buckeyes won the title since 2014. ANNOUNCER: “The odds looked impossible. The longest, toughest post season climb in the history of the sport.  And, after all that, it's Ohio State, together at the mountain top, champions of college football!”  (cheers) The Ohio team has been known for expressing their Christian faith. Coach Ryan Day told ESPN, “Faith is huge with these guys.” Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard said he had to “give my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all the glory, all the praise.” Robin Roberts chatted with Howard on Good Morning America. ROBERTS: “I know as a kid you had the dream of a moment like last night. Can you just share your emotions?” HOWARD: “You know, waking up this morning as a national champion, it's still surreal. God is good. It's just an unbelievable feeling. I'm just so proud of the guys and coach day and all the coaches.” And linebacker Cody Simon said, “The Lord did something special on this team, and we're just so thankful.”   1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, January 22nd, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Leftist Senator Amy Klobuchar opened by misleading the American people.Democracy: government by the people: rule of the majority. This is the first and pure definition from Merriam-Webster and something our founders specifically opposed. The United States of America is a Republic: a government in which the power belongs to a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law. This matters much because Democrats claim that might makes right, meaning, as was the case with Democrat-backed slavery and segregation, that an opinion of a voting majority is superior to guaranteed natural and constitutional rights. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Texas baby murdering activist Cecile Richards, daughter of that piece of work Governor Ann Richards, died this morning of brain cancer. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]While she was at Howard University, Vice President Kamala Harris worked at McDonalds to earn spending money, and now that she's the Democratic nominee for president, the rightwing blogosphere is attempting to push the absurd conspiracy theory that she lied about it.They apparently realize it's not great that Donald Trump—infamously gifted enormous sums of money from his father coming out of college—is being juxtaposed with VP Harris making french fries and working the cash register, and they're freaking out about it.And they should be freaking out about it. While Trump was born with a silver foot in his mouth (thank you, Ann Richards), Vice President Harris has had to actually, you know, work in a job familiar to working class families who are struggling to make ends meet. Here's the heart of their claim: because VP Harris didn't put McDonalds on resumés and job applications after college, this must mean she's lying. They're now demanding proof that the Vice President worked at the Golden Arches almost 40 years ago.Okay, lemme explain why this is ridiculous.During my junior and senior years in high school, I worked at Papa John's Pizza, and in case you're wondering, yes, it definitely sucked. I took orders, dealt with angry customers, made pizzas, folded boxes, and spent a lot of time simply cleansing the store of dough dust and marinara. I earned $5.15 an hour the entire time I was there—about 18 months—and despite two excellent job reviews (perfect scores, thankyouverymuch), I was denied a pay raise on both occasions because our regional manager was a greedy little man who cared more about his margins than his employees. But the thing is… despite this being less than 20 years ago, with a corporation that very much still exists, I have zero proof that I worked at Papa John's. None. Zilch.I have no name tags, no uniform shirts or hats, no pay stubs or copies of my W-2 or employee documents. I have no pictures of myself in a Papa John's polo and khaki shorts. I have no way of contacting my former colleagues and boss because I've forgotten their last names. Because, you know, 20 years and all.The location itself was shuttered by Papa John's many years ago, probably somewhere around the end of the Bush Administration.I never put my time there on any resumé or applications, including for the few odd jobs I worked between high school graduation and joining the Army. All I have to prove that I worked this shitty minimum-wage job as a young lass are the promise of an affidavit from my grandmother, the permanent muscle memory earned from folding many thousands of pizza boxes, and a lingering resentment toward late stage capitalism. In the eyes of the rightwing blogosphere, I never worked at Papa John's, and to be fair, in the spirit of bipartisanship, I'd love to forget that I ever worked there, so, maybe, in my particular case, their bad faith could be obliquely read as a blessing. This is a pretty common experience for minimum-wage laborers from working class families who have the opportunity to get a college degree and enter the salaried ranks, long separated from keeping corporations afloat for dollars an hour. So, if I, twenty years down the road, can offer no tangible proof that I worked at a fast food joint, it's not one bit surprising that the sitting Vice President hasn't offered up a McDonalds cap wore almost 40 years ago. It's also not one bit surprising that so many in rightwing media don't understand this common experience of those who came from working class families and hunched over an oil vat for hours at low pay to make ends meet. These are the same people who claim raising the minimum wage and mandating universal health care and requiring paid family leave for working class families will somehow irreparably harm our economy. They are detached from the struggles of workers, led by an egregiously entitled and effete Nepo-Baby-in-Chief, and to compensate, they've decided to show their asses by attempting to erase the experiences of a progressive politician who understands, firsthand, what workers experience. And they'll do this while sitting in fast food drive-throughs and being served by the same folks whose livelihoods they spend every waking moment of their privileged lives trying to make harder.Same as it ever was. By the way: Papa John's Pizza sucks. Get your pies elsewhere.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Twenty years ago, Shamina Singh took what might seem like an unlikely leap from a decade-long career as a labor and political organizer into an executive position at one of the world's biggest financial institutions. To Singh, this leap was a logical next step in her fight for equity and inclusion. She is now the co-founder and president of Mastercard's Center for Inclusive Growth. The Center, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this spring, is the credit card giant's social impact hub that leverages Mastercard's extensive business assets in service of people and the planet. As of 2023, the Center has brought 48 million small businesses worldwide into the digital economy, over half of which are led by women. In this episode of DB|BD, hosts Ellen McGirt and Jessica Helfand sit down with Singh to discuss why the creation of an inclusive global economy is a redesign project that transcends sectors. Singh also talks about why supporting small businesses is essential to global financial inclusion and championing A.I. solutions that have some equity intention in mind. She also shares the advice she received from iconic Texas governor Ann Richards that changed her career trajectory forever. On this season of DB|BD, co-hosts Jessica Helfand and Ellen McGirt are observing equity by highlighting the “redesigners” — people who are addressing urgent problems by challenging big assumptions about how the world can and should work — and who it should work for. This season of DB|BD is powered by Deloitte. Visit our site for more on this episode and to view a transcript. To learn more about Mastercard's Center for Inclusive Growth, visit their website.Click here to learn more about and to enter  the Center's A.I. challenge, in partnership with data.org.For more information on What's Around Design's 2024 Conference in Portugal, click here.Watch Design Observer's video editor Daniel Paese's award winning short Spots.Follow The Design of Business | The Business of Design on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcast app. Episodes are produced by Design Observer's editorial team. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]I spent this weekend in El Paso at the 2024 Texas Democratic Convention, and it was a breath of fresh air just to be around Texas Democrats. The excitement, the passion, the values, the pride, and the unyielding commitment were on full display. It felt so good to be home. When I was invited to speak at this year's convention, there was no doubt in my mind what I wanted to say. I wanted to offer a love letter to what it means to be a Texan, and specifically, the Texas Democrats who have guided my path in life and continue to do so.The original speech I wrote was a bit long, and after a kind and very reasonable request from convention staff, I trimmed a few minutes off it, but I want to include here the text that I had to cut, so the remarks that are italicized indicate they were in the original speech but not what folks saw at the convention.I implore folks to support Texas Democrats this year. I've rarely seen such energy as I saw this weekend. Folks are putting in the work, and it shows. I am optimistic about November. Please consider donating to Texas Democrats right here, Annie's List (supporting women candidates) right here, and Find Out PAC, a project started by the legendary Gina Ortiz Jones to beat extremist Republicans on the Texas Supreme Court, right here.I'm including the video of the speech below for those who'd like to watch it, and below that will be the full text of my remarks:FULL REMARKS (italicized text in original speech but not during delivery):My name is Charlotte Clymer, my pronouns are she/her, and I am proud to be from the Great State of Texas.I currently live in our nation's capital, and often, when I meet someone for the first time and they ask where I'm from and I tell them, they'll have a look of sympathy on their face and say something like: “Oh, I'm sorry. That sounds terrible.” And they mean it.And when that happens, I respond that I'm actually very proud to be from Texas. I love Texas. And the sympathetic look on their face will vanish and, in its place, will be confusion and incredulity. They'll say to me: “But Charlotte, you're a Democrat. You're pro-choice. You support abortion access. You're a trans woman. How can you be proud to be from Texas?”And I realize, in that moment, they truly don't get it. So, I gotta tell them.I tell them that I am from the home of Barbara Jordan, and that during the Watergate scandal, when Americans felt so alarmed and uncertain about our country's leadership, the conscience of our nation was a Black queer woman from Texas.I tell them that I'm from the home of Gov. Ann Richards and that long before these extremist male politicians were so threatened by women controlling their own destiny, Gov. Richards was making it look easy, backwards and in high heels.I tell them that I am from the home of Wendy Davis and Molly Cook and Julian Castro and Joaquin Castro and Gina Ortiz Jones and Molly Ivins. I'm from the home of Celia Israel and Beto O'Rourke and Gene Wu and Monique Alcala and Becca DeFelice.I tell that them that if they listen to Willie Nelson and Beyoncé and Selena, they are listening to Texas music.I tell them that when they watch Simone Biles dominate the Paris Olympics this summer, they are watching a Texas woman do that.I tell them that I'm from the home of Sheila Jackson Lee and Sylvia Garcia and Lizzie Fletcher and Greg Casar. I'm from the home of Veronica Escobar and Al Green and Marc Veasey and Vicente Gonzalez and Lloyd Doggett.I tell them that I am from the home of Jasmine Crockett.I tell them that I am from the home of Sarah Weddington and Cecile Richards and Ilyse Hogue and Kate Cox and millions of Texas women who refuse to be told what they can and cannot do with their own health care. These women terrify the leadership of the Republican Party for a very simple reason: because they know what every Texan knows, regardless of party or ideology or religion or race: they know that there is nothing as powerful as a Texas woman with a plan.I'm from the home of Colin Allred, the son of a single mother and public school teacher, who will be the next senator from the great State of Texas. And it's not because he has embodied a high standard of excellence his entire life (although he has). I's not because he's a beloved and respected Member of Congress (although he is). It's because Texans know, deep down, that Colin Allred is not the kind of man who's gonna fly off to Cancun in the middle of a natural disaster.I'm from the home of Dr. Kristin Hook. She's a former public school teacher and scientist and labor organizer. And when she saw that Chip Roy might be reelected by default, despite his obstruction, despite his irresponsibility, despite his lack of care and attention to the needs of working-class families, she thought to herself: “I can do better than this.” She is now the Democratic nominee for the 21st congressional district of Texas. And folks, she's gonna win.I'm from the home of Lauren Ashley Simmons, a brilliant union organizer and mom who showed up to her local school board meeting in the face of a cowardly and cynical effort by Greg Abbott to take over her children's school district. She looked at the absolute nonsense occurring in front of her and thought: “You know what, I can do better than this.” She came to that meeting as a concerned parent and left as a leader ready to change things. She is now the Democratic nominee for Texas House District 146. And folks, she's gonna win.I tell folks that I am from the home of nearly 400,000 Texas public school teachers and professional support staff who are overworked and underpaid and under-resourced and yet still come to schools every day ready to fight for the future of every young person. Did you what I said? Every young person, regardless of their religion or their race or their economic background or whether or not they are transgender.I tell folks that no matter what I accomplish in this lifetime, every bit of success I have ever achieved would not be possible without my Texas public school education and the teachers who never gave up on me.And I have a message for transgender and nonbinary youth in Texas: you are loved, you are important, you deserve happiness and authenticity, and we will never stop fighting for you.And I tell them that I come from the home of Carolyn Wilson. That's my grandmother. I know what it means to be a Texan because of my grandmother. She taught me that being a Texan means community. It means helping your neighbor. It means lending a hand to the most vulnerable. Being a Texan means no one gets left behind. My grandmother is an atheist, but when I became a Christian at 19, she didn't hesitate to show up to my baptism and tell me that she's proud of me. When I enlisted in the Army, my grandmother wrote me at basic training every week with encouragement, challenging me to reach a higher standard. When I came out as a trans woman, my grandmother told me how proud she is to have me as her granddaughter. The leadership of the Republican Party lives in fear of people like my grandmother because she is closer to the love and grace and empathy of God than they care to understand. They live in fear of meeting a reasonable adult who disagrees with them and defies being put in a box. I'm a progressive, pro-choice trans woman, and I am a Christian military veteran from Texas. They can't stand me because I make it impossible for them to place me in a box. I make it harder for them to divide people and pit Americans against each other. And I'm a Democrat because the Democratic Party has no time for that. Texas Democrats have no time for that. There are working class families to support, homeless veterans to house, minimum wage workers to be helped, gun reform to be achieved, health care to be expanded, children to be fed and educated, civil rights to advance, democracy to be defended, and a country, a proud country, to believe in.Folks, I wanna be very clear about this: we're gonna win in November. President Biden and Vice President Harris will be reelected, Colin Allred will be in the Senate, and we will take back the House. And Texas Democrats are going to lead the way.God bless America. God bless Texas.Thank you.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Here's a question. What do you think needs doing? And are you doing it? This week's episode is a re-publication of my interview with Cecile Richards from March 2020. It was the last in-person interview I recorded before the world shut down two days later. Forgive me, for a moment. I want to take you on a short journey. For those of you that don't know her, Cecile Richards is one of the most extraordinary leaders of our time. Of any time, actually. Public service and activism are part of her DNA.  She's perhaps best known for the 12 years she spent as the President of Planned Parenthood. Her mother — Ann Richards — shattered conventional wisdom when, as a woman and a Democrat, she was elected Governor of Texas in 1990. In the seventh grade, Cecile was taken to the principal's office for wearing an armband in protest of the Vietnam War.  In the eighth grade, she brought food to the strikers on a picket line in her hometown of Austin. Her first job after college, was as a union organizer in New Orleans, helping hotel workers trying to get by on minimum wage. Today, she's the co-creator of Charley, a bot that helps abortion seekers get good and accurate information on how to safely end their pregnancies. Cecile has been called “the most badass feminist EVER” and “The heroine of the resistance”.  She inspires women of all ages, in all walks of life. And she inspires many men, too. When I interviewed her in 2020, I called the episode, “The Blessed Leader”. Usually when I go back and listen to an earlier episode, my reason for the name I came up with is pretty clear. In this case, it wasn't. She didn't describe herself as blessed. The word blessed is not a common part of my vocabulary. And there was nothing about the conversation that suggested “blessed” was an obvious description. The world has changed since she and I last spoke, and I badly wanted to hear her thoughts on the damage to women's rights that has taken place since 2020, as well as her views on the aftermath of COVID on society. I reached out to her a few weeks ago, but hadn't heard anything back. Then early last week, I saw a link to an article that made my heart miss a beat.  The headline read: “Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards has brain cancer”, This woman is a presence, when you meet her in person. She radiates warmth and strength and determination. She is unforgettable.  Her brain cancer is incurable and has a median survival rate of 15 months. She was diagnosed six months ago. I've included a link to the article in the show notes and now I'm going to quote directly from the article, in which she describes learning to write and speak again at the age of 66.  “Her latest treatment is twice-weekly infusions through a clinical trial. ‘I mean, it's like, What do I gotta do to stay alive? I'm good with it. It's totally manageable, but these things are unpredictable. So I feel like it has helped me focus on what I want to do with the time I have. And I'm excited. I've been blessed.  ‘I've been blessed to have always had work that I cared about,” Richards continues. “So many people I've worked with and organized, nursing-home workers and hotel workers and janitors, they didn't have any options. And they worked because they cared about their jobs, but they worked because they had to support a family. But I have been one of the really privileged few that could do what I thought needed doing. And so whatever comes next, I have that.'” “I have been one of the really privileged few that could do what I thought needed doing.” “I've been blessed.”  So let me end as I began by asking all of us, myself included, a question.  What do you think needs doing? And are you doing it?

When she was a teenager, she watched her brilliant, funny aunt struggle with a crack cocaine addiction that destroyed her life and sent her in and out of prison for years. She also watched several friends lose their bright futures due to their entanglement in the legal system due to non-violent drug offenses. She worked her way through a bachelor's degree in English at UH-Downtown as a coffee shop waitress, which was perfect for her because she loved books, coffee, and serving people. She went on to get a master's degree in Literature, but realized that as much as she loved reading and teaching, she could not escape the overwhelming feeling that she needed to do something involving the broken criminal justice system. She went to South Texas College of Law and graduated cum laude in 2012. We speak with Allison her race to become judge and why criminal justice is important to the LGBTQ community Then we speak with Destiny Smith a transgender theater actor based in Houston.  Former Texas House Representative Glen Maxey was born near a refinery in Baytown, Texas, in 1952. His first job was working in a traveling rodeo and his first serious foray into politics was as a student at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, where he led the charge to allow alcohol to be sold in that formerly dry county. Although he was already a known quantity in the Texas Democratic Party by his early 20s, it wasn't till he was almost 30 and left teaching 5th grade in rural Texas that he got his first job working at the Capitol. In 1981 after getting Kent Caperton elected to the State House, Glen was asked to join Representative Caperton's staff and immediately began cultivating a relationship with the most powerful senator in the state, Oscar Mauzy. The following year, Glen lost his own race for an open House seat in Bryan-College Station. He quit teaching and permanently relocated to Austin to join the staff of Sen. Mauzy. Glen lived an extremely closeted life as a gay man. But that ended in 1985, when, using the bull horn of Sen. Mauzy's office, he stood up against Texas's draconian response to the HIV crisis, and overnight became a very public gay rights activist and the first executive director of the Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby (LGRL). No one thought he had a real chance to win an election in Texas in the early 90s; his good friend Governor Ann Richards said, “Don't do it. Even if you win, they'll never let you do what's important.” Glen Maxey proved them all wrong becoming the first out gay man elected to the Texas State House in 1991 and over the next 12 years passing more impactful legislation than any legislator in Texas history.

Vintage Classic Radio presents Friday Night Noir where we bring to life timeless classic detective noir, mystery and suspense from the golden age of radio between the 1930s and the 1960s.  Episode Description: "Sorry, Wrong Number" was a popular radio play that was first broadcast on the Lux Radio Theatre on January 9th, 1950 over CBS. The episode starred Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster in the lead roles. The play was originally written by Lucille Fletcher as a one-act play in 1943. It was so popular that it was adapted into a film in 1948 and has been performed on stage and radio numerous times since then The play tells the story of Leona Stevenson, a bedridden woman who overhears a telephone conversation about a murder plot. As she tries to piece together the details of the plan, she becomes increasingly desperate to stop the crime from being carried out. However, her efforts are hindered by her own physical limitations and the uncooperative attitude of the people she contacts. Barbara Stanwyck was initially hesitant to take on the role of Leona Stevenson, as she didn't want to play a character who was so helpless and vulnerable. However, she was convinced by the strength of the script and ultimately gave a powerful performance that is still remembered today. The rest of the cast included Ann Richards, Ed Begley, Wendell Corey, and William Johnstone. The director was William Keighley, and the producer was Cecil B. DeMille. The Lux Radio Theatre was a popular radio program that aired from 1934 to 1955. It was sponsored by Lux Soap and adapted popular films and stage plays into radio dramas. The show was known for its high production values and star-studded casts, and "Sorry, Wrong Number" was one of its most successful episodes. The episode was so popular that it was released on vinyl record and sold as a standalone album, which was a relatively new format at the time.

Buckle up, ladies & gentlemen, you're in for an amazing ride. This week on the Keep Going podcast, we are joined by Paul Carrozza, the Godfather of Austin running. In our No Direction Home episode a few weeks ago (Episode 11, for reference) we mentioned how one of the three pillars holding up the foundations of Austin running was the mercurial & magical energy bottled up in RunTex, the original local running store that Paul & his wife Sheila owed & operated between 1988-2013. In its 25 year run, it fundamentally changed the entire city, not just the running scene. On any given day you might bump into governors - at least three Texas governors (Ann Richards, George W Bush & Rick Perry) were consistent drop ins, tech millionaires - Michael Dell trained with Carrozza & was a close friend, musical celebrities - Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker were New Balance junkies & spent time on the RunTex floor, but, in addition,  also all the rest of the wild & weird scene that made Austin such a vibrant & exciting place in the 90's & 00's. Those halcyon days are hinted at in this episode where we unpack where Paul started & how he made his way to Austin & the early days of RunTex where every employee was trained in the Trifecta of shoe sales, event production & coaching. Two of your hosts worked in this melting pot of creativity, inspiration & hard work & bring an insider's vibe to the conversation. Stories abound. This is the first in a series of episodes we have planned with Paul as there is simply too much history to cover in an hour. So in honor of 1985, the year Paul & Shiela moved to Austin, as well the year Starship released their international hit smash, We Built This City, we bring to you the episode we call He Built This City: Paul Carrozza, the Godfather of Austin Running.Godspeed, my friends, godspeed.

But during her short stint in Hollywood, she co-starred with the likes of Brian Donlevy, Burt Lancaster, and Barbara Stanwyck. It's a carefully-worded list of bills they promise to bring to a vote as soon as they win the majority. Election night arrives, and the Republican sweep is decisive. Democrats are completely thrown by the size of the loss — and start searching for answers. Yes, we know - Texas Democrats have been burned by optimistic polling more than once - but, these are not typical times, nor a typical political climate, and there's reason to pay attention to the direction that data for both polling AND fundraising for the November midterms is taking. Not only ticket-topper Beto O'Rourke, but also down-ballot progressives including Mike Collier, Rochelle Garza, Susan Hays and the rest of our truly impressive slate are significantly narrowing polling gaps, and also out-fundraising their Republican incumbent opponents - a scenario that has not occurred in Texas since the Ann Richards days. We go over these numbers, and also give our reactions to sections of Beto's speech at last weekend's Texas Democratic Convention - which, by the way, can be heard in its entirety here. Thanks for listening and supporting Progress Texas!
