The university is uniquely Catholic in its origin, and yet currently, higher level education on elite campuses is a “red-hot mess,” according to George Weigel. In this episode, Andrew Petiprin sits down with George Weigel to discuss academia and the intellectual life, not simply as a theoretical enterprise left for those who dwell in an ivory tower, but as driver of culture and social life. They discuss the role of the Church in academia, the scholarly legacy of Pope St. John Paul II, the importance fighting the culture war, and the troubles facing the Western civilization. These topics are also the focus of Weigel's most recent book “Pomp, Circumstance, and Unsolicited Advice: Commencement Addresses and University Lectures,” where he tells students that true academic learning is carrying on the great Catholic tradition.   Get Your Copy of “Pomp, Circumstance, and Unsolicited Advice”: https://ignatius.com/pomp-circumstance-and-unsolicited-advice-pcap/?searchid=2246581&search_query=pomp+circumstance   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press Podcast. It's Monday! Sam and Emma are joined by Dave Weigel, politics writer at Semafor, author of the "Americana" newsletter to preview the first round of major elections after the Trump/Musk regime's DOGE overhaul. First, they run through updates on Trump's tariffs, a return of stagflation, the rejection of Mike Waltz, the conviction of Marine Le Pen, DOGE's Social Security crash, RFK's gutting of infection disease and HIV/AIDS policy, Tesla protests, Tesla fires, Iran's response to Trump, and the Senate GOP's budget push, before expanding on Trump's authoritarian crackdown on migrants and watching Elon attempt to rally a Wisconsin crowd of sycophants. Dave Weigel then joins, reflecting on the rapid radicalization of the race for the last seat Wisconsin Supreme Court since the injection of over $20 million of Elon Musk's money, going from the culmination of a decade-long battle by Wisconsin Democrats to break down the GOP gerrymander to a full-scale (in Elon's words) battle for the “future of civilization.” After expanding on the more personal stakes Elon Musk has in the makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and why, despite that, the messaging has almost entirely centered on supporting Trump's agenda, Weigel, Sam, and Emma shift to the upcoming special elections in Florida, as they unpack the fear the GOP is facing over their dwindling margins over the last few months, highlighting some particularly brutal campaigning from Democrat Josh Weil against “unhinged,” “anti-American” Randy Fine, and the importance of tying the Right to Musk's anti-Medicaid, anti-Social Security agenda. Wrapping up, Dave touches on the potential GOP response if these margins continue to shrink, and how DOGE has allowed them to change their messaging. And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the Trump/Musk agenda of boosting the immigration of *white* South Africans to the US, unpacks the Working Family Party's endorsement of four candidates for New York City Mayor, and watches Zohran Mamdani continue to absolutely nail his messaging campaign. The MR Team also touches on Vivian Wilson's appearance with Hasan, growing regret from MAGA-voting federal workers, before taking a few calls to unpack Trump's Greenland push, the devastating impact of Trump's authoritarian crackdown on DACA Dreamers, and Canada's Mark Carney, plus, your IMs! Today is the beginning of the Tangle team's “spring break.” As part of fostering work-life balance and also assuring our small team can survive the nonstop stream of news, I give our staff three breaks a year: one during August recess when Congress is out, one between Christmas and New Year's, and one in March — a “spring break.”Our March break begins today. The team is taking full advantage of it — we're spread out from Japan to West Texas, taking vacation or recharging at home. However, as our team has grown, so too has our capacity to provide some content while we take breaks like this. So this week, in lieu of a newsletter, we are going to be sharing a series of podcast episodes that we didn't get a chance to publish in the deluge of news these past few weeks. The first is with Dave Weigel, a reporter at Semafor. Weigel is one of my favorite journalists. Whenever I check in on his Twitter feed or read his updates in Semafor, I get the sense that he is fair-minded and critical of all his subjects regardless of their politics. On top of letting his personality shine through in his writing, he's also well-sourced, level-headed, and forward-thinking. So, when he agreed to chat with me about the first couple months of the Trump administration, where Congress is headed, and how voters are reacting to all this, I was thrilled. By the way: If you are not yet a podcast member, and you want to upgrade your newsletter subscription plan to include a podcast membership (which gets you ad-free podcasts, Friday editions, The Sunday podcast, bonus content), you can do that here. That page is a good resource for managing your Tangle subscription (just make sure you are logged in on the website!) Keep an eye out for some more content coming tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday. And, as always, feel free to give yourself a little “news vacation” if you need it, too.      Slam the Gavel welcomes Dave Weigel to the podcast. Mr. Weigel is a top Fixed Income money manager in New York who comes to us via his advocacy work, a pretty far way from Wall St.  Dave is more well known to some as the Family Court Fraud Warrior on social media (Facebook) and in the press.      His divorce in New York is going into it's 14th year this month. After suffering 12 years of legal abuse, he decided to take his analysis of what he calls the most blatant Government Sponsored Racketeering system to the Court of Public Opinion.       For the last 2  years, he's been highlighting to an ever growing audience the play by play of what he calls this Business Model of Fraud. With a slew of other victims found from around the country, his newest initiative is to unite all victims nationwide into a single voice demanding change by calculating the data provided directly from these victims.       Dave Weigel hopes his Wall Street experience in data mining and financial analysis can finally bring the needed transparency of this system to affect real change.  He's welcoming all victims who hear his voice to register at Family Court Fraud Warrior Project on Facebook.  A group on a mission to collect the needed data otherwise hidden by what he calls extremely self-serving privacy laws regarding children.     We discussed the case of Monica Ciardi and there will be having a press release on February 14th, 2025 at Morris County Courthouse, 56 Washington Street Morristown, NJ 07960 at 11:00am. They will taste-test the allegedly viral Dr Pepper Eggnog that Frank saw on Instagram.  Knoxnews photographer Saul Young took photos at the City of Knoxville Christmas Tree lighting. Jody Collins and Sarah Roberto were among those photographed. One man was wearing a “Saul Young Appreciation Society” sweatshirt.  Frank and Becca hosted the livestream of the Karns Christmas Parade on YouTube. A plumber modified a go-cart to look like he was driving a giant toilet. His staff gave away toilet paper, which some British people describe as “loo rolls.” Frank picked up some Milk Duds candy off the road for Becca.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank is not allowed to eat any of the cookies that his wife Jere has baked because they are to be used as gifts. However, Frank is allowed to eat the cookies that Jere received as gifts from her coworkers.  Logan Murrell co-hosted episodes 0139 and 0146 of the Frank & Friends Show. Using the artist name “LAMB,” she recorded an album titled “Love, Mom” which is a love letter to her two children. Frank went to the cemetery for the graveside service and listened to the “Love, Mom” album while waiting for the funeral procession to arrive. Frank called Jere to help him identify one of the other mourners who had waved at him. He gave Logan a “prayer bear” for her son.  Frank saw a 15-second Instagram video titled “Viral Dr Pepper Eggnog” and immediately knew he had to try it. Fill a glass three-fourths of the way with ice cubes and Dr Pepper. Then add eggnog. Frank loves Weigel's eggnog. The drink tastes like an ice-cream float after the ice cream melted.  Jere surprised Frank by giving Becca a plate of the cookies that Frank isn't allowed to eat. Frank explains that he likes ice with a hole in the middle because he thinks the impurities have been drained out. Dr. Frank Jr. PhD. says that is plausible because of the colligative properties.  Becca got rid of her white car that she named “Blanca.” Frank is able to guess the name she gave her new blue car.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. This week, we're looking back at the 2024 election and forward at the next administration. To do that, we have Semafor's Dave Weigel on the show. He joined us shortly before the election to discuss each campaign's gun messaging. Now, he's back to sort through what worked, what didn't, and where things go from here. Weigel agreed there probably wasn't enough detailed evidence to suss out exactly how well each message performed. But he said the recent downturn in Democratic support for handgun bans is probably tied to Kamala Harris emphasizing her Glock ownership. However, the fact handgun bans are so unpopular to begin with probably underscores how much her history of backing such bans drug her campaign down. He also looked ahead at the new GOP-controlled federal government. Weigel said Donald Trump may be more motivated to undo what Joe Biden has done rather than push new gun-rights reforms of his own. He also said Congress is unlikely to pass significant new legislation but will be able to confirm a lot of pro-gun judges--though, he noted the GOP majority may be more fragile than it appears at first glance. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, politics writer at Semafor, author of the "Americana" newsletter just one day out from the 2024 election. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on final-day swing state polling, the lingering impact of Trump's fascist rally at MSG, the electoral drag of Harris' support for genocide, RFK's fluoride attack, Israel's banning of UNRWA and enforced starvation in Gaza, and the NYT Tech Guild strike, before touching on Trump's ongoing deterioration and Mike Johnson's wild slip-up over the CHIPs Act. Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into the major Selzer poll out of Iowa, what it shows us regarding Harris' overwhelming support from women, and what this poll (and others) can tell us about the success of Harris' voter outreach across swing states. Weigel, Sam, and Emma also parse through the numbers behind early voting, why Democrats aren't particularly pressed about them, and the evolving constituency of independent voters, before touching on the GOP's GOTV fiasco – led by Elon Musk and Charlie Kirk. After briefly reflecting on the lingering impact of Trump's Bund rally at MSG, they get into a preview of the Senate fight, what the best/worst case scenarios are for Dems and Republicans across the Presidency, House, and Senate, and what particular races might act as bellwethers for the greater election. Sam also highlights a John Oliver segment on Georgia Rep. Ruwa Romman's comments on voting for Harris. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Greg from Massachusetts about down-ballot voting and the secret men for Harris vote, dives deep into the context for and meaning behind Selzer's Iowa poll (with some added commentary from Trump and, later on, Jeff from Iowa), and Tim from Chicago asks about the election night timeline. Tucker reflects on wrestling with his demons (and losing), RFK Jr. sets his sights on fluoride, and Steve Doocy can't quite put his finger on why women don't like Trump, plus, your calls and IMs! From his role in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe to his visionary teachings on human dignity and religious freedom, this episode captures the essence of his influence. Drawing from George Weigel's authoritative biography, "Witness to Hope," we reflect on how John Paul II reshaped the papacy, introduced a universal call to holiness, and championed the transformative power of Vatican II. Join us as we explore the profound wisdom of a leader who transcended political boundaries to inspire hope and unity across nations. It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Dave Weigel, politics writer at Semafor, author of the "Americana" newsletter, to discuss the biggest headlines of the week. Then, she speaks with comedian Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's bombing of dense residential areas of Beirut and continuing war crimes at home and in Gaza, Harris' attempt to court Latino voters, Obama's attempt to court young black men, Trump's legal woes, Florida's power issues, voter registration in Florida and Georgia, Boeing's anti-labor action, and TD Bank's record-breaking money laundering fine, before parsing a little deeper into Trump decision to shit on the biggest city in a major swing state over… NATO tax rates? Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into the state of the US presidential race in major swing states like Arizona, highlighting Harris' recent pivot away from emphasizing a populist agenda towards vague bipartisan grandstanding with the few anti-Trump Republicans left while unpacking the positives (and negatives) of this approach electorally. Expanding on this, Dave and Emma parse through the polling numbers on high- and low-/mid-propensity voters – touching on Trump's particular ability to turn out that ladder group – and why Harris' strong numbers with newly registered voters is a major plus, before turning to the comparisons between the Dem's 2024 campaign and those in 2012 and 2016, and why the former – thankfully – might be the more accurate one. After touching on the evolution of Harris' messaging game post-convention, Weigel dives deep into the GOP's own insane choices for their messaging campaign – including a reliance on the ever-inconsistent Elon Musk and Turning Points – and what to make of their ongoing push for an anti-trans agenda despite its lack of electoral salience in the past, wrapping up the interview by assessing the dearth of a direct response to Republican narratives on crime, immigration, and trans rights, and what that vacuum in the Democratic messaging campaign might mean come November. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Bradley watch Jesse Watters put on an enchanting display of toxic masculinity with Stephen Miller, dive a little deeper into the absurdity of the Trump messaging campaign (with some help from JD Vance), and highlight the continued strength of Greta Thunberg's unapologetic anti-colonial activism. We're getting closer and closer to the election. And a lot of weird stuff has been happening. Our guest this week points out that Trump has been going “all in” for the “weird vote,” by choosing JD Vance as his running mate and elevating figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Dave Weigel covers politics and writes the “Americana” newsletter for Semafor. He's written about how the Trump-Vance coalition has aimed to cobble together contrarians, dissidents, conspiracy theorists and people who are distrustful of the so-called establishment into a majority coalition. Weigel joins WITHpod to discuss paranoid-esque low trust thinking at the core of the Republican Party base, Trump elevating figures from niche anti-establishment circles and what this all means in such a contentious election. Chris' latest book, “The Siren's Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource,” is now available for preorder. This week, we're reacting to the debate. That's why I've got one of the top political reporters in the country on the show. Dave Weigel is a writer for Semafor, who runs their Americana newsletter. He has been covering national politics across major outlets for decades now. He is one of the best-sourced reporters out there. He said Kamala Harris bringing up her gun ownership at the debate was a bit of a surprise since she hasn't talked much about that before. He agreed the fact she owns a handgun for self-defense could make her more relatable to the average gun owner than Tim Walz, who centers his gun ownership around hunting. But he doubted that would become a major part of her campaign going forward. Weigel said guns have been a relatively minor issue in the election thus far. He said that was likely due to two factors. One is the relative lack of high-profile shootings. The other is the limits on what gun control is even possible under the Supreme Court's Bruen precedent. Special Guest: Dave Weigel.

In this episode of the Healthy by Heather Brown podcast, Heather dives into the importance of mental, physical, and spiritual health in children with her guest, Rebekah Weigel, a producer, writer, and foster/adoptive parent. They discuss the movie 'Sound of Hope,' which focuses on a community-based adoption and foster care model inspired by real-life events from a small church in East Texas.Heather and Rebekah explore the church's role in supporting children both locally and globally, addressing the various traumas that children encounter today. Rebekah shares her journey from psychology to filmmaking, the challenges and blessings of foster care, and the critical role of community support in encouraging adoptive families. Families who serve children through foster care and adoption are embodying the role of local missionaries and are meeting a great need. While more foster and adoptive families are needed, the church can also support these parents by offering prayer and care in the same way it would for international missionaries. We are called to be set apart, salt and light, in a dark world. In the marriage corner, this episode focuses on the balance of phone usage to foster better family relationships and concludes with actionable insights for parents on how to stay present in their children's lives.Scripture verses highlighted in this episode include:James 1:27 “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained.”2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me,  ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to discuss the groundbreaking news from yesterday that President Biden will be dropping out of the presidential race, and endorsing Vice President Harris. First Sam and Emma run through updates on Biden's candidacy, Trump's nomination, Harris' rapid fundraising efforts and endorsements, the Trump assassination attempt, Netanyahu's upcoming address to Congress, Israel's offensive on Yemen, and the NLRB, before diving into the supposed plan for an “open convention” come the DNC, watching Kamala Harris' first speech since this weekend's news, and unpacking some of Harris' major pitfalls. Dave Weigel then joins, as he looks to the GOP side of things, walking Sam and Emma through the last few weeks of Republican whiplash, from the post-debate euphoria from Biden's failure, through the supposed electoral boost that was the assassination attempt, and to the seeming state of panic around Biden's dropout and the fact they now have to pivot to Harris. After expanding on the surprisingly minimal impact of the Trump assassination on the race, Dave explores what a Kamala Harris nomination could do to change the narrative of the Democrats' gerontocracy, what to expect from the convention come August, and how to make sense of the small-D democracy of it all. Weigel, Sam, and Emma also discuss reactions from the press and major media players, how Biden's move will shape down-ballot elections going forward, and why most of the GOP talking points against Harris are winning issues for Democrats. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the conservative establishment from Fox News to Donald Trump to Elon Musk all come together to scream “coup” and “fraud” over Biden's decision to step down, despite their supposed opinion on his senility. Morning Joe unpacks the turn in the Biden campaign's approach to dropping out, another Dave Rubin prediction comes back to haunt him, and figures from the UAW to the VP reject Netanyahu's upcoming address to Congress, plus, your calls and IMs! It's a story that needed to be told, says “Sound of Hope” writer and producer Rebekah Weigel, because Possum Trot is not just another small Texas community near the Louisiana border, but a town that chose to live out God's command to care for the orphan. "This is such an amazing story," says Weigel, an adoptive mother herself, adding, "we need to see more churches step in" the way that Bennett Chapel Missionary Baptist Church did.Back in the 1990s, W.C. Martin, the pastor of the small church in Possum Trot, and wife Donna felt the Lord call them to adopt a child. Martin began preaching to his rural church about what the Bible says about adoption, and the congregation was moved to action. In total, 22 families in the church adopted 77 of the hardest-to-place children in the foster care system. "There's probably only a couple hundred people in the community of Possum Trot, an unincorporated area," Weigel says, "but, you know, they took it seriously, and they did it together as a community. And I think that's something I really loved about this story, was just the sense of doing it together, like bearing each other's burdens, and, you know, when one was weak, they came together, and they helped each other, and I think we need more of that."Now, the inspirational story of what happened years ago in the little community of Possum Trot is hitting the big screen on July 4 in the feature film “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot.” Angel Studios is distributing the film. To learn more and purchase tickets, click here. Weigel joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the true story behind the film and the experience of telling such a moving story through film. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to break down the results from Super Tuesday. Then, they're joined by Joe Mizrahi, secretary treasurer of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 3000, to discuss the union's efforts to lead the "Uncommitted" vote in the Washington state primary, coming up next Tuesday March 12th. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Super Tuesday, McConnell's endorsement of Donald Trump, the race for Senate Majority Leader, a government shutdown, Israel's offensive in Rafah, SpaceX's attack on the NLRB, and Menendez's newest charge, before parsing through IfNotNow's action at Adam Schiff's victory speech last night. Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into what he saw as the major stories coming out of Super Tuesday, including Haley's choice to drop out without endorsing Trump and the growing momentum around the “Uncommitted” protest vote, walking through the limited undermining of Donald Trump during the GOP Primary for the former, and assessing the productive engagement (and what impact it could have) for the latter. Next, Weigel dives into AIPAC's major primary and general election races to look forward to, exploring the prospects of their attack on progressive Democrats and what (if anything) could be seen as a “loss” by the pro-Israel lobby, before wrapping up with a quick assessment of the results coming out of North Carolina and Texas, and whether far-right primary victories means more pickups for Democrats come November. Joe Mizrahi then quickly runs through the major role UFCW Local-3000 plays across the Pacific Northwest, and the central role solidarity and activism play in organizing the 55,000-strong union. Mizrahi walks through the union's decision to first endorse a ceasefire, and now to endorse voting “uncommitted,” including the process that led to the unanimous decision on the latter, and why the union saw this protest vote as an opportunity to push Biden towards a more viable candidacy. After briefly running through the pushback to the union's most recent endorsement, Mizrahi wraps up the interview by walking through Local-3000's organizing around the issue, and what they hope to achieve. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma explore Tim Walz's response to the incredible showing of the “uncommitted” vote in yesterday's Minnesota Primary, assess the impact of Nikki Haley dropping out on the general, and parse through the exile of Brett Weinstein from the public square (he got blocked by Elon Musk). Amy Klobuchar stands up for anti-trust, Snyder in Salem and Michael in Miami respectively explore the future of the US Left and left media, and Fox's The Five salutes the senatorship of Kyrsten Sinema.
