Yeah buddy your favorite Orlando-centric talk show TOTS with Ross is back with illustrious host Ross McCoy and guest Angel Rivera who would have towered over both Ross and I had we been recording in person. Seriously, I think I come up to his waist. (This is Jacki, btw.) So, uh, I sat in the producer's chair for this episode and, um, didn't realize taking notes were part of the gig, so I don't have a clever list of topics that were covered during this episode, but I can gush about both Ross and his guest. 1. I dunno if it will make the episode, but Ross helped me solve a very important train issue I had been pondering in my brain and I am very grateful for that. 2. Angel Rivera, host of What The Hell is Angel Listening To?, has the best music taste of almost everyone I've ever met. I remember when I used to listen to the morning show he is on, messaging every time I heard a banging bop of a bump to find out what new artist I was about to become obsessed with. 3. Ross has the best Hitler bit I know in his stand up act. Which is saying a lot, because there are a lot of comics in Orlando with Hitler bits for some reason. 4. Angel Rivera, AKA the Angel of Boom, knows how to read a room as a DJ. I trusted him more than once with my parties at Fairvilla and the energy in the room of every single party was palpable. 5. Together on mic, they are magical. I laughed, I learned things, and I think you will too. And hey, if you like it, leave Ross a dang review, okay?

Well we did it, we went mobile. I have to tell you, it'll probably never get better than this one either. We decided to break in our new equipment at the unofficial Tom and Dan breakfast meet up at Johnnys filling station this past Sunday. We spared no expense this show, gathering all the big names in Orlando. Well, at least three of them. We start off with local beer connoisseur, Big Rick. Anything you need to know about beer, this is your man. Make sure to follow him on social media to find all the cool drinking events happening near you. Second to step up to the plate was someone we all are familiar with, Daniel Dennis. You'll know him from A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan. What a cool guy, seriously, couldn't be more down to earth. We wrap up our first mobile cast with Angel Rivera from The Monsters in the Morning. You can also catch Angel Saturday nights DJ'ing at Frank'n'Steins in Winter Park and Johnnys Filling Station Sunday mornings for brunch. This was the first of many mobile casts, we had a really fun time breaking in the equipment and can't thank the guys enough for being on and helping us out. See you guys next week. Tits, Cigarettes and Racecars. #NoGuarantees

This week the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics review three new titles, and boy, are they geared up! They begin by looking at the Hernandez brothers' latest issue of Love and Rockets: New Stories (Fantagraphics). Focusing first on Jaime's contributions, they comment on how his narratives have evolved after the “Love Bunglers” storyline from issues number 3 and 4 of New Stories. They're particularly interested in Jaime's deeper exploration of the family of Vivian Solis, AKA Frogmouth, especially as it relates to Tonta and the reappearance of Angel Rivera (last seen in the “Ti-Girls Adventures”). Next, Andy and Derek delve into Gilbert's contribution to the latest New Stories, spending a good deal of time doing close readings of the multiple narrative levels at work: the current story of Dora “Killer” Rivera's visit to Palomar, the flashbacks to her deceased aunt and great-grandmother, and the films surrounding her great-grandmother, Maria. Here, the Two Guys bring up Gilbert's new graphic novel, Maria M.: Book One (Fantagraphics), and how it plays off of so well the new Love and Rockets. They look at Maria M. not only as another installment of Fritz's b-movie books — along with Chance in Hell, The Troublemakers, and Love from the Shadows — but also, and perhaps more significantly, as a point of convergence among the various generations of Luba's family. While Andy feels that Maria M. is a kind of retelling of Poison River (one of the most significant storylines in the first volume of Love and Rockets), Derek sees it as more of a prequel or lead-up to that narrative. Finally, the guys look at the first issue of Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Ríos's Pretty Deadly (Image Comics). They discuss the density of comic, while at the same time commenting on the decompressed nature of the series' premise. There is a lot packed into this episode, plenty of close and detailed readings, and you're going to have to listen to this show multiple times in order to savor every drop of the Two Guys' insights…for what they're worth.
