Tori Boykins is a creative with many layers. A boxer, entrepeneur, graphic designer and gritty midwesterner, Tori joined the show to discuss her long journey breaking into the sports design scene, first at the Kansas City Chiefs, and currently as a graphic designer with the Kansas City Royals. From majoring in interior design at a Big Ten university known for engineering, to starting a business in college and running it six years, Tori has had quite an eclectic career. We attempt to peel back the many layers of her story beginning with a love of art and geek culture as a kid in Cincinnati, Ohio. We discuss how she got sucked into "old school mentality" choosing to attend community college to get an associates in graphic design after already obtaining a Bachelors in Interior Design years earlier and founding a small business. Tori also elaborates on how a black-owned design studio in Texas gave her a chance as a design intern, as well as how pitching free projects to real, underserved sports brands such as women's boxing and a local basketball team led her to an interview with an NBA team and an eventual gig in the NFL. Throughout the episode, we discover a common theme of Tori's midwestern grit and hustle, as well as how important humility and risk-taking are when it comes to pursuing your dreams in the sports business. Lastly, Tori touches on the importance of learning new skills and why she hopes to leave a positive legacy for minorities that come after her in the sports design industy. “The best designers are always problem-solvers...[our] job is to figure out how to make this [project] the best it can be.” On this week’s podcast, freelance sports designer Brian Gundell joined the show to discuss his career working in a few different limbs of the sports industry. From agency side to Nike to the MLB to college football recruiting, Brian has an varied history in this niche of design. Brian touches on the importance of SportsLogos.net to his entry into sports design, as well as the importance of networking and building relationships with folks in this very small industry. We laugh about the ridiculousness of college football recruiting graphics and Brian elaborates on this newest position for designers in sports. Lastly, we touch on the lack of upward mobility in college sports and Brian leaves us with some insight into his move to full-time freelance. "When you're more of a creative thinker you think differently...the language you use is a lot different and sometimes there is a disconnect when you're trying to conversate about what you're trying to accomplish. As a designer you have to remember that you are solving a problem...is this going to benefit your brand, is this going to serve the purpose? You could create this beautiful piece of work, but if it doesn't accomplish what somebody was intending to do, then it's not going to be a successful design." For this week's episode, I traveled to Starkville, MS for the Kentucky vs. Mississippi State football game. The game wasn't the only reason I was in town though, it was just a perk. The real reason I went to Stark Vegas was to interview Ashley Strauss, the Bulldogs' talented Director of Creative Services. You'll hear Ashley and I post-BBQ coma speaking on-location in her office about her path to Mississippi St., the painful similarities between playing sports and pushing yourself as a creative person, and developing a visual style for the MSU athletics brand. We also discuss empathy and how developing it is an important skill for creative people, as well as how communication is vital in getting to the bottom of the semantics of feedback for projects as many times, non-creatives aren't articulating feedback clear enough for creative thinkers. In addition, we have a special guest cameo as Senior Associate AD of External Affairs, Scott Wetherbee, comes aboard to discuss MSU's relationship with Adidas and how they go about approving and creating uniforms, as well as feeding the social media monster. Surf is the Managing Director of Creative for the Miami Dolphins, an NFL team doing things differently in the sports industry by approaching their creative content as more of a consumer brand, rather than a sports brand. Prior to the Dolphins, Surf had an extensive career in the traditional advertising industry and stint at Adidas as a brand manager. The word brand is very complex, yet it is thrown around a lot these days; most of the time carelessly or in complete ignorance as it regards to what a brand is. In this episode of Halftime, I discuss the origins of branding, its definition according to the American Marketing Association, as well as dive deep into the semantics of the word and what it means in the modern era. I also give specific examples of brands in the sports context such as Kentucky Basketball, Oregon Football and the New Zealand All Blacks, as well as discuss the complexity of a college athletic department's brand in relation to an individual program's team brand. How much do brands have to do with a team being picked in the College Football Playoff? I touch on a recent article by ESPN's Heather Dinich and elaborate on the importance of trust and equity when it comes to brands. Lastly, I discuss color, it's signifance in branding and share why there are more important things than a logo when it comes to branding.
