Send us a textThis week on Here's What We Know, we're joined by Steve Griggs, founder of Steve Griggs Design, who has earned a reputation as one of New York's most respected landscape designers, known not just for his designs but for how he shows up for the people he serves. We'll explore where he came from, how he found his calling, and why the work he does is more art than architecture. We also get into college football rivalries, pricing creative work, learning the hard way, and what it really means to be “the guy” people trust when things get complicated. This episode is relaxed, funny, honest, and full of those little moments that remind you why experience still matters and why good work always starts with caring. Tune in now.In this episode, we talk about:Why creating outdoor spaces is really about people, not projectsThe difference between talent and experienceThe truth about pricing creative work and saying, “it costs what it costs”How to think about money when the work is personalWhy execution matters more than the ideaWhat decades of doing the hard jobs teach youBecoming the person people trust when things get hardThis episode is sponsored by:Reed Animal Hospital (Be sure to tell them Gary sent you!)Bio:Steve Griggs is not your typical landscape designer. He has been getting dirt on his hands since he was 16, cutting grass to earn extra money and learning the value of hard work early on. That work ethic carried him through advanced landscaping studies at Mississippi State University and SUNY Cobleskill College of Environmental Design and Horticulture. At 25, Steve founded Steve Griggs Design after working alongside his father in the industry, where he absorbed core values that still guide his work today: make no excuses, keep your promises, respect the deadline, and always deliver for the client. When he saw those principles missing in much of the industry, he chose to do things differently. That commitment to a customer-first approach has earned Steve a reputation as one of New York's most respected landscape designers, known not just for his designs but for how he shows up for the people he serves.Website: https://stevegriggsdesign.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stevegriggsdesign/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ3rPHh3yC3FgzQ_nw9xenwLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/public-profile/in/stevegriggsdesign/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SteveGriggsDesignConnect with Gary: Gary's Website Follow Gary on Instagram Gary's Tiktok Gary's Facebook Watch the episodes on YouTube Advertise on the Podcast Thank you for listening. This week on Truth to Power, we bring you a community conversation about one of Kentucky's most notorious antislavery slaveholders! "Cassius Marcellus Clay: The Life of an Antislavery Slaveholder and the Paradox of American Reform" was the topic of discussion at the Filson Historical Society's Gertrude Polk Brown Lecture Series on the evening of Thursday, December 4, 2025 at the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts' Bomhard Theater. Cassius Marcellus Clay, a fiery nineteenth-century Kentucky antislavery reformer, was both admired and despised. A duelist, newspaperman, and ally of Lincoln, he fought slavery's expansion while still enslaving people himself. Historian Anne E. Marshall's biography reexamines Clay as emblematic of white Americans who opposed slavery's economics more than its injustice. By portraying Clay's contradictions, Marshall reveals why emancipation required war and why true racial equality faced enduring resistance. Marshall is an associate professor of history at Mississippi State University and on December 4th she was in conversation with the Filson's President, Dr. Patrick Lewis, who fielded audience questions. Watch the event at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRSKtIEte_8 On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else! Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 4pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at https://forwardradio.org

Mo Melnick has perfect pitch, which didn't help him in his career as a drummer, but he used to be in a rock band and now his job is sitting on the Jersey Shore renting out chairs and beach umbrellas. When the singer from his old band shows up and begs Mo to reunite for a final gig at the beachfront amusement park where they first started, Mo is skeptical. But Johnny Clay persuades Mo and the other band members that in addition to performing together again, they're going to pull off a major robbery of the resort. Mo's estranged teenage daughter shows up and is enthusiastic about both the gig and the Fun City Heist (Severn House, 2025). Mo hopes everything goes according to plan – what could possibly go wrong? Michael Kardos is the two-time Pushcart Prize-winning author of three previous novels: The Three-Day Affair, Before He Finds Her and most recently Bluff, as well as the story collection One Last Good Time, all of which have earned acclaim and starred trade reviews. Originally from the Jersey Shore, Michael earned a bachelor's degree in music from Princeton and received an M.F.A. from Ohio State and a Ph.D from the University of Missouri. He co-directed the creative writing program at Mississippi State University for over a dozen years before moving with his family to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 2022. Michael played the drums professionally in his twenties as part of a band who were booked at a lot of clubs, slept on a lot of sofas— and accrued a lot of musical war stories. But he's never pulled off a heist (that he'll admit to). Learn more about your ad choices.
