We thought it couldn't get any worse than the 2021 hammering at the hands of Limerick but Cork's second-half meltdown against Tipp will leave lasting scars on the Rebel faithful. It was Cork's fifth defeat on the biggest day of the season at Croke Park since their last victory and by far the most devastating. Despite a six-point half-time advantage, Cork wilted in the face of serious Tipp heat, the pressure of ending a long wait without Liam MacCarthy no doubt playing a major part in the implosion. We look at the issues surrounding the All-Ireland that contributed to the team's failure to perform. Why were they not better prepared to cope with a sweeper when it was well flagged up in advance that Liam Cahill could throw a tactical curveball to cut out the goal threat?Did Pat Ryan and his selectors make the right calls on the line, especially when Eoin Downey picked up a yellow card coming up to the break and was subsequently sent off?Is there a mental weakness there that means Cork can't deliver when they're heavy favourites? After all their statement wins over Limerick in the Munster final and in 2024 were when they were underdogs? The Echo Podcast also discuss Pat Ryan's future, now his three-year term is officially over. They examine any potential changes to the panel and team, including the status of veterans Patrick Horgan, Seamus Harnedy, Conor Lehane and Damien Cahalane.Which young hurlers are best placed to push into the team for 2026? William Buckley, Darragh O'Sullivan, Micheál Mullins and Jack Leahy are among the rookies with great potential.Clare and Tipp have both landed two All-Irelands apiece since they last lifted the Munster trophy, which takes the shine off the victory in the Gaelic Grounds back in June. But a bit of perspective is needed. Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, Jack McKay, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. You can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast Hosted on Acast. This week on the Science for Sport Podcast, host Richard Graves sits down with former Leeds Rhinos captain Stevie Ward, a man who went from teenage prodigy to Grand Final winner, only to have his career cut short by concussion at just 27. In this powerful and deeply human conversation, Stevie opens up about: - What it's really like debuting alongside your childhood heroes - The fear and thrill of running out at Wembley at 18 - The brutal highs and lows of elite performance, injury, and recovery - How fear, when embraced, can unlock peak performance - The emotional toll of early retirement and how he's rebuilding his identity beyond sport But this isn't just a story of sport. It's about leadership, mental health, emotional intelligence, and what it means to be truly vulnerable, in a dressing room, a boardroom, or everyday life. Whether you're an athlete, coach, sports scientist, manager or just someone navigating life's transitions, Stevie's story is packed with insight and inspiration and how to lead with authenticity. About Stevie Ward Stevie is a former professional rugby player and part of the golden generation at the Leeds Rhinos, one of the most successful teams in Super League history. Stevie became the youngest grand final winner ever, going on to win two more Grand Finals and 2 Challenge Cups, and was named captain at just 26. Amongst the highs, Stevie endured ten operations and several mental health struggles. This adversity inspired Stevie to launch Mantality in 2016 to promote mental health for men through counselling, life-coaching services, and a stigma-breaking podcast.
We review the racing from the MTR at the Paris Olympics and discuss Hayden Wilde's crash, Taylor Knibb's result, plus are we seeing a shift away from ‘Gold Meaning Everything?'. Tomas Rodriguez made a name for himself by beating IRONMAN World Champion Patrick Lange at IRONMAN Texas last April. Since then, he's been hit with an anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for the banned substance Clomiphene. Tomas has released a statement blaming contaminated food. Could he be telling the truth? In sport the ability to assess who is eligible for a male or female category is fundamental to making that category work. Are some athletes now abusing it and using it to enhance their performance? We share an excerpt from the Science of Sport podcast. [The latest episode of The End of Sport podcast co-hosted by my old friend Nathan Kalman-Lamb, Johanna Mellis, and Derek SIlva.] In this episode, Derek and Nathan are immensely privileged to be joined by UCLA historian Robin D. G. Kelley for a discussion of the remarkable and obscene events that took place at the UCLA anti-genocide encampment and an assessment of the encampment movement in the context of the neoliberal university and racial capitalism more broadly. We also talk about the role of sport in protest politics. Robin D.G. Kelley is Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at UCLA. He honestly does not need any introduction from me, but just to gesture to his impact, he is the author of books including, Africa Speaks, America Answers: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2012); Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original (The Free Press, 2009); Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination(Beacon Press, 2002); with Howard Zinn and Dana Frank, Three Strikes: The Fighting Spirit of Labor's Last Century (Beacon Press, 2001); Yo' Mama's Disfunktional!: Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America (Boston: Beacon Press, 1997); Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class (New York: The Free Press, 1994); Into the Fire: African Americans Since 1970 (New York: Oxford University Press, 1996) [Vol. 10 of the Young Oxford History of African Americans series]; and Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists During the Great Depression(Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 1990). Very recently, he is also the author of an astounding appraisal of the events at the UCLA encampment in Boston Review.
