Travis, Vince, and Darren break down LAFC's 1-1 draw with Chivas that ends in a penalty shootout win, a “Chivas vs Chivas” night with an electric, contentious atmosphere at BMO that featured a heavy Chivas presence but a loud 3252. David Martinez's mature decision and assist in the build-up, a strong defensive performance led by Nkosi Tafari with MULTIPLE goal-saving interventions, and the 17-year-old homegrown hero, Jude Terry stepping up to score the winning PK with ADDULT COMPOSURE, all contributed to a big win tonight.

John Maytham speaks to Wikus Engelbrecht, who works with Wild Rescue, a proclaimed nature reserve in the Southern Cape, about the campaign to secure the world's first Protea emoji from the Unicode Consortium. He explains why emojis have become powerful cultural symbols, how greater digital visibility could support conservation awareness, and why putting South Africa's national flower at our fingertips is about far more than just adding another icon to our phones. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. Topics covered in this episode: Free-threaded Python: past, present, and future django-admin-site-search Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development A large batch of PEPs are finalized Extras Joke Watch on YouTube Show Intro Sponsored by us! Add your name and email to our friends of the show list, we'll never share it. Calvin #1: Free-threaded Python: past, present, and future The GIL has prevented true multi-threaded parallelism in CPython since the beginning — multiple past attempts to remove it failed on performance grounds Sam Gross at Meta finally solved it; his work became PEP 703 and ships as free-threaded CPython today Python 3.13 was experimental with 20–40% single-threaded slowdown; 3.14 brought that to 0–10% Python 3.15 (October 2026) delivers a unified ABI — one extension binary works on both GIL and free-threaded builds Already >50% of the top PyPI binary wheels support free threading Wouters predicts free-threaded becomes the default between 3.16–3.20 (2027–2031), with the GIL eventually disappearing next decade Michael #2: django-admin-site-search via Adam Parkin A global/site search modal for the Django admin, by Ahmed Aljawahiry. Hit cmd+k anywhere in the admin and you get a command-palette-style search window, kind of like the one in VS Code. It doesn't just search one model's list page. It searches your entire site in one box: App labels Model labels and field attributes Actual model instances (your data) Two ways to search the instances: model_char_fields (the default): runs an __icontains across every CharField (and subclasses) on the model. Zero config, works out of the box. admin_search_fields: defers to each ModelAdmin's existing get_search_results(), so it respects the search_fields you've already set up. The part I like: it's permission-aware out of the box. Users only see results for the apps and models they actually have view permission on, so you're not leaking anything through search. Results appear as you type, with throttling/debouncing so you're not hammering the server on every keystroke, and it's full keyboard nav: cmd+k to open, up/down to move, enter to go. It's responsive, does dark and light mode, and it pulls Django's built-in admin CSS variables so it just matches whatever admin theme you're running. Under the hood it's Alpine.js, but bundled into static so there's no external CDN dependency. Setup is about what you'd expect: pip install django-admin-site-search, add it to INSTALLED_APPS, mix the AdminSiteSearchView into your AdminSite, and drop a few template includes into base_site.html. Supports Python 3.8 through 3.14 and Django 3.2 through 6.0, MIT licensed, and everything is overridable if you want to skip certain models, add TextField matching, etc. Calvin #3: Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development Qwen 3.6 27B is being called the first local model that genuinely competes as a general-purpose intelligence — benchmarks put it at roughly mid-2025 frontier level (comparable to GPT-5 / Claude Sonnet 4.5) Runs locally via llama.cpp; on an M5 MacBook Max with 8-bit quantization + multi-token prediction, it hits ~32 tokens/sec using ~42GB RAM 4-bit quantization gets it under 18GB, runnable on 32GB devices; Nvidia RTX cards run it even faster The dense 27B is recommended over the faster MoE 35B A3B — author prefers higher quality output over raw speed Privacy and reliability are the pitch: fine-tunable, can't be taken down, suitable for sensitive/proprietary data Author sees this as a stepping stone — frontier open-weight models like GLM 5.2 are now locally runnable with company-grade hardware, and smarter-still local models are coming Michael #4: A large batch of PEPs are finalized A bunch of PEPs went from accepted to final. 668, 687, 691, 699, 701, 703, 728, 770, 773, 829 But this wasn't them making their way into CPython. It's an admin sorta thing. (Thanks PyCoders) See the commit. Extras Calvin: More fun bling for your terminal this time - https://charm.land/ Michael: Follow up from pls, What the pls? Thanks Pito. Food writer Bee Wilson has been in classrooms across the UK, and what she's discovered is startling: many children have completely lost their sensory connection to real food. They know the peach emoji but not the fuzzy feel of actual peach skin. They recognize mint from shampoo but have never smelled a fresh mint leaf. When asked where food comes from, kids used to say "the supermarket." Now they say "mommy's iPad." This slow shift is revealing a new gap in child development that affects how kids observe, describe, and engage with the world around them. In this episode, Bee explains what's lost when children grow up disconnected from real food. And she explains what can happen when you put fresh produce in their hands and simply ask: What do you see? Bee shares how these lessons build scientific observation skills, spark rich oral language, and get even the most reluctant writers eager to put words on paper. Kids speak in vivid similes and metaphors. They notice details they've never noticed before. And, teachers report some of the most meaningful classroom experiences of their careers. Bee is the co-founder of TastEd, a charity offering free sensory food education resources now used in over 1,800 UK schools: tasteeducation.com She's a fascinating guest sharing practical ways any teacher can bring this into their classroom, including a simple lesson you could try tomorrow. Kouri Richins was just sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for poisoning her husband Eric with fentanyl. The jury convicted her in under three hours. Her three sons had therapists read their statements because they're too young to stand at the podium themselves. And after all of it, Kouri sent a message to an admirer that ended with a winking emoji and a promise: "They haven't seen anything yet."Tony Brueski walks through what happened during the five-hour sentencing hearing and what Kouri's behavior revealed about the psychological profile the jury had already seen through. While therapists read her sons' words — describing locked rooms, a sibling bringing meals, animals dying from neglect, and a father they'll never get back — cameras caught Kouri scoffing and rolling her eyes. When her own family took the podium and called her innocent, the tears appeared instantly.Kouri then spoke for forty minutes. She told her sons to "be like your dad" — the husband she was convicted of killing. She told them their memories of what happened in that house were "an absolute lie." She told them to ignore the people currently keeping them safe and to distrust the narrative around her conviction. She never acknowledged a single thing her children described. Her youngest son is nine. His message to Judge Richard Mrazik was the shortest and the hardest to hear: "Once she is gone, I will feel happy." He was sentenced to life without parole on what would have been Eric Richins' forty-fourth birthday. And somewhere after the gavel fell, Kouri found an admirer to message with a wink.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? After a jury convicted her unanimously on every count — including the fatal poisoning of her husband Eric Richins — Kouri Richins sent a message from jail to an unidentified "admirer." She promised to expose the judge, the prosecutors, the investigation, and Eric's entire family. She said they "picked the wrong one." And she signed off with a winking emoji and a threat: "They haven't seen anything yet."That message, revealed in the prosecution's sentencing memo, tells you everything about the woman who stood in a Park City courtroom on Eric's forty-fourth birthday and delivered a forty-minute speech to three sons who no longer want to hear from her.Her boys had spoken first through their therapists. They described a household of fear — doors locked from the outside, animals dying around them, a mother who was absent or intoxicated. Each one asked the judge to keep Kouri behind bars. One said he felt safe for the first time since leaving her care.Kouri's response was to call their memories a lie, attack the family raising them, and tell her sons to "be like your dad" — the father she was convicted of killing. Judge Mrazik sentenced her to life without parole, calling her "simply too dangerous to ever be free."Tony Brueski walks through the narcissistic framework that powered Kouri's sentencing performance, from the eye rolls during her children's statements to the tears reserved exclusively for her own supporters — and what that winking emoji reveals about a woman who still believes she's the one being wronged.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-108-james-millers Episode #108 features James Millers, newly appointed ECD at McCann London. We've been wanting to get James on the show for ages now and were pleased to catch him before starting his new role. James has won every major award going … 23 Cannes Lions, 9 D&AD pencils, 26 One Show and more. And many of these awards are for OOH. We started with Lucozade and a campaign showing how the drink gives you the edge in a 50/51 challenge. We thought Spurs could do with a few bottles of this ;-) Next BHF and the ‘When you least expect it' campaign - a long copy, campaign talking to punters in high dwell time moments. A lovely tone of voice here, describing how a heart attack can happen anytime, anyplace. We went onto the beach with Surfers Against Sewage and heard how James had to dig a deep hole in the sand to make the work happen. And then the main course, McDonald's. It's incredible the sheer quantity and quality of work James (and ex long term partner Andrew Long) wrote and presided over during their eight years together at Leo's, leading to McDonald's being named "Brand of the Year" by Campaign magazine. In 2023/24 alone, McDonalds won over 100 awards. We could have featured any number of brilliant Macca's campaigns, but James narrowed it down to three: McDelivery, Iconic stacks and the Emoji's campaigns. All three belters with great backs stories. We closed on another banger, Kellogg's The OG, which won awards galore and put Kellogg's back on the creative map. Thanks James so much for coming on the show. We loved it. Good luck in your new role. Thanks also to Jon for the edit, Adrian and all the gang at Soho Radio and of course huge gratitude to all our sponsors, who make the show possible: Bauer Media Outdoor View2Fill Super Optimal GAS Music

It's Pastor Jordans last day with us. We are furious. But let's say nice stuff about him anyway :)
Going beyond reduction to simplicities and soundbites, the Scriptures tell a story of Israel's national origin that is highly complex and filled with stages. It is not slavery to beach-vacation in one neat step. The Exodus has much in common with many group-origin stories: God creates a "camp" (the slaves in Goshen, Gideon's 300, the Israelites committed to King David, the Disciples of Yeshua) ... and gives them a cause. Then, God schools them in precept and experience in the new life and journey He is offering them. And in Messiah - the life is indeed new! We become "a new creation." We feast on this one! May it be for shalom!
