In this special family-themed episode we're delighted to welcome sisters Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, renowned figures in the quilting community. Both have dedicated more than four decades to the art of quilting, earning numerous accolades and inspiring countless enthusiasts worldwide.Pat Holly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, during her father's tenure as a flight instructor in the Korean War. Though the family relocated to Michigan when she was just six weeks old, Pat proudly embraces her Hoosier roots. She pursued biology at the University of Michigan and later worked as an electron microscope technician at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. It was there she met her husband, a pathology resident. Following their marriage, Pat returned to the University of Michigan School of Art to study graphic design, weaving, and fabric design. Her fascination with textile creation and historical textiles from around the world continues to influence her quilting designs. Sue Nickels was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and spent most of her life in Ann Arbor. She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Art. Sue married in 1976 and welcomed her first daughter in 1978. Inspired by her sister Pat's baby quilt gift, Sue embarked on her quilting journey by enrolling in a class at a local quilt shop, where only hand techniques were taught at the time. Over the years, she transitioned to machine quilting and has been teaching machine techniques for more than 30 years. Sue's dedication to quilting has earned her numerous awards, including the 1998 AQS Best of Show for "The Beatles Quilt," a collaboration with Pat.Beyond their collaborative projects, Sue and Pat have contributed significantly to the quilting community through teaching, writing, and sharing their expertise. Sue has authored several books and has developed her own rulers for machine quilting. Pat's work reflects her deep appreciation for historical textiles and her background in graphic design and weaving. (3:10) How did Pat and Sue learn to sew? Their mother of course! Hear the story of the genesis of their sewing/quilting careers. Were they good at sharing their only sewing machine? Hear about that right here! Oh, learn about the Troll doll cloths too!(6:00) What inspired each of them to transition from being sewists to quilters? Their grandmother and a special baby quilt!(9:14) Learn about the influences of Illinois Quilters Inc. and Jinny Beyer, Ruth McDowell, Harriet Hargrave and Gwen Marston.(11:27) Sue, learned to quilt from Harriet Hargrave's book “Heirloom Machine Quilting” with the help of Pat who had taken a workshop form Harriet in the Chicago area. This was in 1987 and other quilters in your area had not discovered machine quilting. Was it hard to make the transition to machine quilting?(15:43) Both Pat and Sue talk about the influence of Gwen Marston and the Beaver Island Quilt Retreat.(18:40)In the late 80”s Pat moved to Muskegon, MI and began the PALS (Patchers at the Lakeshore) Quilt Guild. Here she talks about this move and the genesis of this endearing group of quilters.(20:09) The sisters talk about what it's like to collaborate on their work…and what it's like to win awards together.(23:42) What moment or event stands out for Pat and Sue? Well…there are many and then there's the Beatles Quilt. And for Pat it was her miniature quilts.(26:53) Learn more about the Beatles Quilt of 1998 Best of Show. It's beginning and how they created it.(30:56) Both Sue and Pat are BERNINA Ambassadors. They talk about how they became a part of the first class of Ambassadors and why the program means so very much to them.(34:35) Pat and Sue talk about their special exhibit “The Two of Us” featured at Quilt Week at Paducah 2025. Learn about what's in the exhibit and how they'll be implementing QR codes. Also to be features will be the Beatles Quilt and Pat's miniatures.(38:37) Learn some never before shared secrets about this exhibit and Pat's miniatures!(42:03) Any future sewists or quilters in their family?(44:51) What's next for Pat and Sue and what are their dreams?!(45:54) What didn't I ask. Sue talks about when she taught at Harriet Hargrave's retreat, and when Gwen Marston asked Pat and Sue to take over Grew Marston's retreats and called them The Holly Girl's Retreats. Pat mentions that they are both amazed at what quilting has given them and the places it's taken them.(48:23) Do you want to reach out to Pat or Sue. The Trump administation has revoked visas of hundreds of international students across the nation. An unspecified number of students at Michigan State University and Central Michigan University have had their visas revoked. Two students at Grand Valley State University, four at Wayne State, one at Eastern Michigan University, and twelve enrolled students and ten graduates of the University of Michigan have also been affected. The reasons are not clear. The Trump administration says it’s focused on students who are – in the words of Secretary Marco Rubio — “Hamas supporters." Today we’re going to talk about the crackdown on campus speech, and other ways the Trump administration has silenced voices of dissent opposing the war in Gaza. On today's episode of Get Psyched, we're excited to welcome Dr. Margaret Ann Paauw, Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University and a licensed clinical social worker. With over a decade of experience in social work, Dr. Paauw has dedicated her career to supporting individuals facing homelessness, housing insecurity, and serious mental illness. Join us as Dr. Paauw explores the critical role of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) in providing long-term, community-based solutions for individuals with severe mental health challenges. Dr. Paauw clarified that the legal action referenced in this episode was technically a class action lawsuit based on federal guidelines from the ADA, rather than the federal government suing the state of Illinois. While this distinction may not change the broader implications of the discussion, we felt it was worth noting for accuracy.

Today on American Indian Airwaves, listeners will hear extensive update on why 31st Anniversary of the Beginning of the War Against Oblivion, the armed uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) on January 1st, 1994, against the colonial state of Mexico and global capitalism, was placed on hold. On January 1st, 1994, the Mayan peoples' traditional homelands were recovered after the 12-day armed uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) against state violence and a legacy of settler colonial oppression. The EZLN's actions are concrete evidence of how Zapatismo in Chiapas has improved the living conditions of the communities based on organization, autonomy, and self-determination. Tune in to hear about how the systemic and increased organized crime violence is having on Indigenous peoples throughout Chiapas, MX. Also, listeners will hear a recap of the major 2024 events for Indigenous peoples throughout the settler colonial state of Mexico such as the 50th anniversary of the important 1974 Indigenous Congress in Chiapas, convened by the late Bishop Samuel Ruiz, whose 100th birthday would have been in 2024. Moreover, hear about the 2024 elections such as with the MORENA party reelected by a landslide; and how Claudia Sheinbaum replaces AMLO, cementing MORENA monopoly on power and what that means for Indigenous and Mayan peoples. The MORENA party corruption means more extractive industry expansion, displacement of Indigenous peoples without free, prior, and informed consent, and the violent repression of Indigenous protests and resistance against megaprojects, plus more. Guest: • Richard Stahler-Sholk, a retired Professor of Political Science at Eastern Michigan University, and community activist involved with the School of Chiapas which is an organization of grassroots activists and communities working to support the autonomous, indigenous Zapatista communities of Chiapas, Mexico. Schools for Chiapas was created the mid-1990's by individuals searching for ways to make the world a better place and working to create a world where all worlds fit. What are the real ways that we can embrace the complexity of our experiences? How can we let go of a scarcity mindset in favor of a mindset of abundance? How can we see the stories of others as adding something important rather than taking something away from us?What does it actually look like to make more space for people and their stories? How can we start to “build a bigger table”? Instead of dismissing our vision as unrealistic or unattainable, how can we learn to use imagination and hope as tools to make our dreams a reality? …Dr. Paul Porter is the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). Like Abbie, Paul graduated from Ball State University and was a member of the Ball State Speech Team. Paul went on to earn his Master's in Communication and Rhetorical Studies at Eastern Michigan University and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Indiana State University. Paul has worked on the development of programs and initiatives designed to help create inclusive environments for diverse student populations, as well as diversity strategic plans and program assessments. Paul has presented on topics such as multicultural competence and unconscious bias across the state of Indiana and nationwide. In this conversation, originally published in April 2023, Abbie and Paul reflect on meaningful experiences in their lives. Paul and Abbie discuss multicultural competence, cognitive schemas, and puzzles. Paul shares his journey into the world of communication, from 3rd grade tests, to junior high morning announcements, to high school and college speech, and beyond. Paul talks about when he first learned what ADHD and depression are, when he was diagnosed, and how this language changed how he saw himself. Abbie and Paul consider what it looks like to live out values around diversity, equity, and inclusion on a personal and organizational level. ..."If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other” -Mother Teresa “We are only but one conversation from the relationship that changes the rest of our lives” -Lee Mun Wah...Take the Survey here!Subscribe to the CosmoParenting Substack!Register for the 2024 CMMi Fellows Presentation here!...Stories Lived. Featured Musician: Nadim Azzam The Video: [After THE JUMP: Things said.]  --------------------- 1. MSU Preview: Offense starts at the top MSU goes as Aidan Chiles, which is in all directions. Some of those interceptions are freshman; some are just really not accurate. They're bringing him along in an interesting way, which is max protection and letting him look downfield. He has a threat in Nick Marsh who's really emerging in the back half of the season. Other targets are just dudes. OL has some big issues on the right side, look cobbled together. Alarming how well they were able to run the ball consistently against Iowa. Michigan needs to keep Chiles in the pocket. 2. MSU Preview: Defense starts at 19:01 They're weak at defensive tackle but cover it up with their burly LBs playing downhill. Other than play-action pass, what can we do Alex? Probably need to get creative. Consider beefing up if they have Hinton back and can run out multiple OTs, but Evan Link as 7th OL? You don't have the dudes who are going to win those matchups as much anymore. They do give up a big long run per week so many we'll have a Mullings beastquake again. Or maybe just once we'll get an Edwards vs Cal Haladay throw. 3. Illinois After Review starts at 34:30 Brian is NOT as mad at Kirk Campbell as he was before going over the film. There were a lot of good ideas in there that his quarterback just couldn't execute. Offensive line seems to be coming together—Gentry was actually *Good*. Priebe is rounding into a 2nd team all-B10 kind of player. Crippen eh but not terrible. Persi might just be what he is. Tuttle was BAD. The overturned interception was to a guy covering grass—it's not even *at* a receiver. Defensively, yeah, don't put them in a terrible situation. Barham had a great game, they covered a lot of the weird stuff that Bielema dumped on them, but were constantly starting drives at midfield or in Michigan territory. Dammit Wink things have largely disappeared save for 2-minute drills, where they're rushing high and playing soft man. 4. Hoops vs Oakland, and Toledo Preview starts at 59:56 Exhibition showed what we wanted to see, which was not many bad shots against a tricky zone defense. The ball didn't stick: when you can see all of these former PGs together they can all get a little creative. It's not going to be no-turnover but they get very good shots, including free throws.
