Dublin-born, London-based artist Niall Jackson aka Swimmers Jackson releases his second album Now Is All via his own Wonky Karousel Records label this Friday, April 7. Made between March 2020 and March 2022, it's a journey of sorts through the pandemic. He released his debut album Murmuration in May 2020, but with no opportunity to tour, Jackson took to writing as many songs as possible to document the feelings of that time before heading back into a studio in Limerick over Christmas 2021 and St Patrick's Day 2022. Armed with a handful of songs about loss of identity, an uncertain future, concerns with society's direction, and getting older against your will, the resulting album Now Is All is both hard fought and hard won. We talk about life in London, his creative process, getting radio play from Steve Lamacq, and go through some of the tracks on the album. You can buy it at: https://swimmersjackson.bandcamp.com/album/now-is-all Swimmers Jackson tour dates: April 6: Islington Assembly Hall, London (supporting Kila) April 7: Norton's Digbeth, Birmingham (supporting Kila) April 8: Secret Cinema, Crystal Palace April 14: Betsey Trotwood, London April 20: Roisin Dubh, Galway (supporting David Kitt) April 23: Spirit Store, Dundalk (supporting David Kitt) April 28: Pharmacia, Limerick (supporting Jinx Lennon) May 24: Maureen's Bar, Cork City May 26: Prim's Bookshop, Kinsale May 27: Levis' of Ballydehob May 28: Workman's Cellar, Dublin

I'm back in the Betsey Trotwood pub with Alex Frith and this time the book club is entirely devoted to a guest project. Alex has created a graphic novel about neuroscience with his parents Uta and Chris Frith, and the artist Daniel Locke. It's a fantastic look at how our brains work, both by themselves, and in cooperation with others. We talk about the process of writing the book, and the collaborative process that reflects his parents' scientific endeavours. Order your copy from Bookshop.org or your local book shop. David Copperfield by Charles DickensDavid Copperfield is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend James Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble, yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora Spenlow; and the magnificently impecunious Wilkins Micawber, one of literature's great comic creations. In David Copperfield - the novel he described as his 'favourite child' - Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of the most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure. This edition uses the text of the first volume publication of 1850, and includes updated suggestions for further reading, original illustrations by 'Phiz', a revised chronology and expanded notes. In his new introduction, Jeremy Tambling discusses the novel's autobiographical elements, and its central themes of memory and identity. Can't sleep? Let the dulcet voice of Erik Braa reading the classics take over for jumping sheep. These tales, narrated in a soothing, calm voice are designed to turn sleeplessness into somnolence. Tune in, zonk out.

“'Humour' is maybe the worst word in the English language” Wit Lit is a podcast about funny books - so who better to hear from than a comedian who is also a bookseller? That's right, it's only Mr BEN POPE - crowd favourite and manager at The Review Bookshop in Peckham - recommending his favourite funny books. We discuss silly book titles, writer's voices versus comedian's personas, how the brain can short-circuit ‘funny' and ‘good', and how War and Peace is just lots and lots of Tweets lined up next to each other. * How to find Ben: He runs a monthly stand-up show called FRESH CHESTNUTS at the Betsey Trotwood pub in Farringdon!
