The new film “The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles, an eccentric lottery winner who uses his money to hold a private concert on the remote Welsh island where he lives. The band he hires is his favourite group of all time: the fictional folk rock duo McGwyer Mortimer. The only problem is they haven't spoken in years — and the concert is just for Charles. British poet and comedian Tim Key stars as Charles and co-wrote the movie, which is based on a short film he made in 2007. He joins Tom Power to talk about the project and why it took 18 years to turn his short into a feature. Plus, he reveals how he persuaded Hollywood A-lister Carey Mulligan to get on board. If you like this conversation, listen to Tom's interview with director Bong Joon Ho on “Mickey 17.”
THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND stars Tim Key, Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan, with Basden and Key having written the script. So how did this idea of a folk duo being hired by a rich guy for a private show on his secluded island come about? Let's talk about it...

On this episode of Reel Insights, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, chats with Tim Key & Tom Basden to discuss their quirky and charming new film, The Ballad of Wallis Island. The film follows Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of reuniting his favorite musicians, McGwyer Mortimer (Tom Basden & Carey Mulligan). When the former bandmates—and former lovers—accept his invitation for a private show, old tensions resurface, and Charles desperately tries to keep his dream gig from falling apart. In this interview, Tim and Tom share how the project evolved from a short film into a full-length feature, the influences that shaped the film's offbeat world, and what makes Wallis Island such a fascinating setting. Tim reveals what Charles would make Sean do upon arrival, while Tom discusses how Carey Mulligan became part of the film. They also talk about balancing humor with heart, why the film's British comedy still feels universally relatable, and which retired band they would bring back for a private show.In Select Theaters This Friday, Everywhere April 18Visit Nerdtropolis.comhttps://www.Facebook.com/nerdtropolishttps://Instagram.com/nerdtropolishttps://Twitter.com/nerdtropolis
What do the people want? Wordle Live. What do they not want? The Cymru Connection. That's the opinion of John Robins. Just John Robins. You thought that we were out of the Wordly woods. But no, the more concern you have for the woods the more trees John will plant. PLANT being a good starter. John wants a feature substitution and he'll wage this war on Elis, listeners and production staff alike until he gets it.Failing that, what about a daily Wordle podcast? Guys. Guys! GUUYYS!?! Don't run off. It can't happen anyway because they're hard to promote and you can't get a commercial midroll advert in if they're too short. So it's all fine. That door is closed.Anyway there are larks aplenty today on the show, and not the avian sort. For Richard Herring and his singular ball are in today to talk about someone who looks like Tim Key. Plus there's a Made Up Games which really will make TV commissioners *finally* sit up and listen to the ideas machines. If there's any format that you think has the potential to make the boys boat loads of cash then it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022.
Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy return after more than a week in Park City plus virtual screenings for this year's Sundance Film Festival and they are here to talk about 15 of their favorite films. They include a pair of body horror films about the terror of living happily ever after. There is also the horror of being a parent especially if you live next to the worst kind of Karen. Music plays a role in a lovely story about a washed-up folk singer and a lottery winner plus the heartbreaking tale of an artist taken away from us too quickly. There are more documentaries about the first deaf Oscar winner, teenagers who took on the environmental concerns of their community, the troubling legacy of To Catch a Predator and the consequences of delaying that colonoscopy. Audiences were treated to standout performances from Dylan O'Brien and the genuine discovery of the debut by a name to remember, Eva Victor. All that plus generational tales of Palestine and the building and rebuilding of America. 0:00 - Intro 5:44 – The Ugly Stepsister 11:03 – The Ballad of Wallis Island 16:16 – It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley 20:04 – Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore 26:26 – The Perfect Neighbor 35:25 – Predators 43:04 – Twinless 48:33 – If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You 54:01 – Andre is an Idiot 57:48 – All That's Left Of You 1:01:08 – Rebuilding 1:05:33 – Together 1:11:03 – Middletown 1:15:33 – Sorry, Baby 1:23:10 – Train Dreams 1:31:47 – More Sundance Mentions 1:34:29 - Outro

Have you ever eaten a salty banana to cure your cramp? Ah yes, it's that time again when Toby Tarrant takes over and delivers another cracking episode of The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast. We have been inundated with comedic talent in the studio this week - Dominic Byrne was also here. Jack Whitehall popped in to tell us his thoughts on putting swords in various orifices in front of the King; Poet Tim Key told us he hates poetry before reading us one of his own poems and Dan Aykroyd took a break from filming the Ghostbusters Afterlife 2, to chat with us about his new launch. Good luck with your project, Dan. We also had top LAD himself James Robinson along to talk about his latest alcoholic discovery. If all that wasn't enough, we also had: Dom crowdfunds for a castleToby dreams about Toni ColetteStumpy's (Hungover) Pub QuizEnjoy! The Chris Moyles Show on Radio XWeekdays 6:30-10am
#430 The Imp from Impington - Rich has some cold hard truths for any murderers out there and is also glad to see that his eventless zombie story idea has been so quickly embraced, with a twist. Today is a momentous meeting of Champions of Champions because his guest is Josh Widdicombe. They talk about the worst thing you can take to the hospital when your wife is giving birth, being related to Henry VIII and a man who wiped a king's bum, what Josh's disability is, the true motivations of role players, bumping into Beaumont, Josh's inability to swim, whether we might see the return of the sitcom Josh, tiny women who live in burrows and whether some comedians work so hard that they never get a chance to spend their millions.
