Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast
We usually avoid covering breaking news to keep our shows evergreen—but holy purrgil, major changes are coming to the Star Wars and Lucasfilm, and we had to dive in. Tricia Barr (Fangirls Going Rogue / Fangirl Blog) and BJ Priester (Fangirl Blog) join us to unpack two huge developments: the evolution of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and the major Lucasfilm leadership restructuring. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland is officially expanding beyond a single timeline, with all changes set to debut April 29th. New storylines on Batuu will span multiple eras—from the Galactic Civil War to the Age of the Resistance—adding Luke, Leia, Han, and Darth Vader into the land. Disney is also rotating new artifacts into Dok-Ondar's and transforming First Order Cargo into Black Spire Surplus. The BEST update according to Sarah? John Williams' legendary scores are finally coming to Galaxy's Edge. Music from the first six films—including the Main Title, the Force Theme, and classic motifs like "Han Solo and the Princess"—will now fill the land. Nostalgia matters, and this addition delivers the emotional Star Wars immersion we've have been craving since the land first opened in 2019. All these changes will fully take effect on April 29. And just one day after this news, another bombshell dropped: Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down as president of Lucasfilm after 14 years, returning to producing, while Dave Filoni takes over as President and Chief Creative Officer alongside Lynwen Brennan as Co-President. Kennedy also addressed long-rumored, stalled film projects in a candid Deadline interview, and we discuss in detail. Lucasfilm is entering a bold new era, both in the parks and on screen. We speculate what's to come. What do you think?? Watch the YouTube version here for the best experience. Listen to the podcast episode here. On this week's episode, we say farewell to Kathleen Kennedy, who had a … checkered tenure as the head of Lucasfilm. Then we review 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. It's like 28 Years Later, but with more flaying and stoner comedy antics. (Seriously.) Make sure to swing by Thursday for even more zombie chatter! And if you enjoyed this episode, hit that like button and restack this post to your friends!
Last week Lucasfilm announced that Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from her role as studio president, a position she has held since Disney's 2012 acquisition. Succeeding her are George Lucas' protégé and Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, who will oversee the franchise's creative direction as co-president alongside former Lucasfilm General Manager Lynwen Brennan handling the business side of things. Kennedy still has an active hand as an executive producer of both Star War's next theatrical offerings: May's The Mandalorian & Grogu as well as 2027's Starfighter and will continue to produce other projects independently. Kennedy's tenure saw its fair share of highs and lows, especially contending with an often fickle fandom, but with multibillion dollar films under her belt her exit marks the end of an era.It was a surprisingly noteworthy MLK weekend box office– outside of Avatar: Fire & Ash's continuing reign, Marty Supreme became A24's top-performing film of all time with 80 million dollars domestically, surpassing Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Zootopia 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time globally with over 1.7 billion dollars, passing Inside Out 2. Meanwhile, Nia DaCosta's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opened below expectations with just 15 million dollars over the four-day weekend, falling well short of the 30-million-dollar debut of its predecessor and behind tracking projections of 20 million dollars. Despite the horror sequel's muted debut, it's been an unusually robust box office this January.Netflix has revised its $83 billion dollar deal for Warner Bros. Discovery to an all-cash transaction valued at $27.75 dollars per share, simplifying the structure to provide greater certainty of value for shareholders and accelerate the path to a shareholder vote by April. The amended deal, unanimously approved by both boards, maintains the same per-share valuation while WBD stockholders will still receive additional value from shares of Discovery Global following its spinoff, with Netflix financing the deal through cash on hand, credit facilities and committed financing. This update comes on the heels of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos' renewed promise to keep WB studio films in theaters for at least 45 days before hitting streaming.Prime Video has released a first look photo of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series, which has begun production.Hans Zimmer, who has scored more than 500 movies and TV projects, will officially score the upcoming Harry Potter series for HBO Max in partnership with Bleeding Fingers Music, a composer collective that he co-founded.Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst has been cast as main character Kratos in Amazon's upcoming God of War series, which is currently confirmed for two seasons and has begun pre-production. Teresa Palmer was also cast last week and will play Sif, Thor's wife and the goddess of family.Cate Blanchett has signed a deal to reprise her role as Viking warrior Valka in Universal Pictures' live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.Warner Bros. has set Jorge R. Gutiérrez to direct an animated feature centering on the classic Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
On today's episode of The Kristian Harloff Show, the panel breaks down a massive new rumor surrounding Avengers: Doomsday — with reports claiming the action in Marvel's next event film could eclipse everything the MCU has ever done before. Is this hype justified, or is Marvel once again setting expectations impossibly high? We also discuss Hulk reportedly sitting out Avengers: Doomsday, following comments from Mark Ruffalo, and what that could mean for the overall roster and story direction. On the DC side, new details and an image from Man of Tomorrow spark conversation around Maxima and how this project may shape the future of the DCU. Plus, casting rumors heat up around who will become the next James Bond, with reports pointing to a mid-2026 decision, and Kathleen Kennedy doubles down on the idea that Indiana Jones will never truly be finished. Big franchises, bold claims, and major implications across Marvel, DC, and beyond — let's get into it. We kick things off with the existential dread of FOLLOW UP and the absolute joy of jury duty. While xAI's Grok is busy getting banned in Malaysia and Indonesia for its CSAM-generating "features," the Senate is unanimously passing the DEFIANCE Act to give us some legal teeth against the deepfake machine. Meta is busy nuking 550,000 Australian accounts to appease regulators, while Roblox's age verification is so broken that a drawing of stubble or a photo of Kurt Cobain can get you into the adult lounge. Moving IN THE NEWS, Meta is trading its $70 billion Metaverse graveyard for a Reality Labs layoff and a pivot to AI hardware, fueled by an "AI infrastructure" buildout that's hiring former Trump advisors. Bandcamp is heroically banning AI "slop," Matthew McConaughey is trademarking his own face to fend off the bots, and ICE's AI hiring tool is such a disaster it's accidentally fast-tracking mall security as "officers." Between self-help gurus charging $99 for chatbot "advice," GM finally settling its driver-spying suit with the FTC, and NASA prepping for a February moon shot while China plans to launch 200,000 satellites into our already crowded orbit, the future looks exactly as messy as we expected. For MEDIA CANDY, we've got Lord of the Rings marathons, the diner-bridge of Starfleet Academy, and the usual joy of streaming price hikes hitting our "Premium" plans. We're tracking the 2025 "In Memoriam" and Gabriel Pagan's exhaustive movie list before sliding into APPS & DOODADS. Jony Ive and Sam Altman are reportedly building an hearing aide called "Sweetpea" to kill your AirPods, Siri is officially Google Gemini's new puppet, and Apple is finally bundling its creative apps into a "Creator Studio" subscription trap. Tesla is making Full Self-Driving a subscription-only Valentine's gift (good luck with that), Ring is rebranding surveillance as a "fire-watching" assistant, and a Chinese app called "Are You Dead?" is the new must-have for the lonely. To cap it off, the internet proved its maturity by using "Words.zip"—an infinite word-search grid—to draw a giant phallus, because of course they did.AT THE LIBRARY features the Anthony Bourdain Reader, the return of Bob in the new Laundry Files book, and Jimmy Carr's guide to happiness, which is apparently cheaper than therapy. Then we descend into THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, where the dishwasher-installing, ham-radio-lunching Dave Bittner reveals Disney World has job openings for those of us who spent high school in the AV club. Lucasfilm is finally entering a new era as Kathleen Kennedy steps down, just as Galaxy's Edge admits the original trilogy exists, and we wrap it all up with lock-picking kits and the terrifying realization that Seymour from H.R. Pufnstuf is the ultimate Gen-X fursona.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.Gusto - Try Gusto today at gusto.com/grumpy, and get three months free when you run your first payroll.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.
