He needs some cool tunes, not just any will sufficeBut they didn't have Randy Woods Band, so he bought Def Leppard twiceNow cruisin' in his Caravan, he sees homies as he passBut if he looks twice, they're gonna kick his lily assThat's right folks, we're talking about Dexter and Noodles and all the rest of the crazy gang that made up the darlings of the pop punk band "The Offspring". But not that song. No, not that one either. No, we're not doing Self Esteem... NO NOT THAT ONE EITHER! It's a pick by our good pal Alice's Dad!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Magnesium and silver nitrate", or possibly, "You gotta keep em separated"!The twenty first installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by Kofi titan Barry John Williams who has had his number come up for the first time! It's "The Offspring" with "All I Have Left Is You"The song at the end is the sublimely thought-proviking and deeply lyrically complex and weighty "Tiptoe through the Tulips" by the legendary Tiny Tim. Eleanor Stollery began performing with the National Theatre in her role of Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol, and she is now involved with delivering live audio description for theatre performances. Bonnie O'Mera is the star of Maddie + Triggs, a children's TV programme that puts visual impairment at its heart. The three discuss their careers so far and their experiences of working in showbiz with their visual impairments. As a young woman, one of Reverend Cheryl Kincaid's legs became paralyzed in an accident. Enduring insensitive remarks from fellow believers, she resonated deeply with the story of Tiny Tim. There's a point in the story where Mr. Cratchit mentions that Tiny Tim hoped people would notice his paralyzed leg in church, so that they might remember the One who makes lame people walk and blind men see. This offered a moment of perspective for Reverend Cheryl: Tiny Tim wasn't asking to be healed. The Meaning Behind A Christmas Carol With Jerry Bowyer

Every Christmas season, A Christmas Carol returns to our screens and pages as a story of generosity, redemption, and hope. But beneath the familiar narrative, Charles Dickens was also making a powerful argument—one that challenges how society views the poor, children, and human worth itself. In today's Christmas episode of Faith & Finance, we sat down with Jerry Bowyer, our resident economist and president of Bowyer Research, to explore the deeper economic and theological message Dickens embedded in this classic tale. The Meaning Behind “Surplus Population”One of the most disturbing lines in A Christmas Carol comes from Ebenezer Scrooge, who suggests that the poor might be better off dying to reduce the “surplus population.”Jerry explained that this phrase wasn't casual or poetic—it was loaded with meaning in Dickens' day. It reflected the influence of Thomas Malthus, an economist whose ideas shaped early 19th-century thinking. Malthus believed population growth would always outpace food and resources, making widespread poverty inevitable. His conclusion? Society should discourage the poor from having children.Dickens deliberately places this language in the mouth of his villain. Scrooge isn't just cruel—he's the embodiment of a philosophy that treats people as economic problems rather than human beings made in God's image.Jerry noted that Dickens was, in effect, writing A Christmas Carol as a rebuttal to Malthus.By the time Dickens wrote the story, Britain was entering what economists now call the Great Takeoff—a period of unprecedented growth in productivity, trade, and human flourishing. Malthus had predicted catastrophe just before abundance exploded.Dickens highlights this abundance through scenes overflowing with food, trade goods, and celebration. The message is clear: people don't merely consume resources—they create them.Scarcity, Trauma, and Scrooge's PastDickens doesn't excuse Scrooge's cruelty, but he does explain it. Through the Ghost of Christmas Past, we see a lonely boy shaped by hunger, cold, and deprivation.Jerry pointed out that Scrooge's scarcity mindset is rooted in trauma. His fear of lack leads him to believe that God—if He exists at all—is stingy. That fear shapes his economics, his relationships, and his resistance to generosity. The turning point comes when Scrooge encounters the Ghost of Christmas Present. When told the spirit has over 1,800 brothers—each representing a Christmas—Scrooge responds, “What a large family to provide for.”It's another glimpse of his scarcity thinking. And it draws sharp rebuke.Jerry emphasized that Dickens is confronting the idea that more people mean less provision. In contrast, Scripture reveals a God who is generous, creative, and abundant—and who commands humanity to fill the earth, not fear it.No One Is DisposableBy the end of the story, Scrooge is transformed. He becomes generous, relational, and deeply concerned for others—especially children like Tiny Tim.Jerry observed that in a Malthusian worldview, Tiny Tim is expendable. But Dickens—and the gospel—say otherwise. There are no surplus people.Even Jesus Himself, Jerry noted, would have been classified as “surplus population” by such a system—born poor, dependent, and unwanted by the powerful. The language may have changed, but the ideas persist. Whenever society treats children as burdens, the poor as problems, or human life as expendable in the name of efficiency or sustainability, we are hearing echoes of Scrooge before his redemption.Dickens reminds us that economics is always moral—and theology always shapes how we view people.Watching With New EyesAs Jerry put it, A Christmas Carol isn't just a holiday story. It's a challenge to scarcity, fear, and dehumanization—and an invitation to generosity rooted in trust. As families watch this story together, it becomes a powerful opportunity to talk with our children about God's abundance, human dignity, and what it truly means to love our neighbor.Because the real miracle of Christmas isn't simply changed behavior—it's a changed heart. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a substantial amount of savings sitting in the bank and want to protect it from inflation. December brings our new Holiday Horror episode with John Hudson and Troy Guinn dropping in to hang the mistletoe. This year we examine the Christmas time tale WHOEVER SLEW AUNTIE ROO (1971) starring Shelly Winters and a host of British character actors. It turns out I am the only member of our trio who had watched this film before 2025 opening up a number of questions about why Troy chose it! Privileges may need to be rescinded.  A major part of our discussion revolves around director Curtis Harrington's memories of the movie and its cast. After years of holding my tongue, I finally air my complaints about his rather plodding directorial style and point to a scene that I feel needed a different sensibility behind the camera. Actors Micheal Gothard, Lionel Jefferies, Hugh Griffith and Ralph Richardson are dutifully admired with each adding unique flavors to this very odd holiday dinner. The stand out child actors are given their due with a prominent face from the 1970 version of SCROOGE making all of us fantasize about ending Tiny Tim's life. We also marvel that unlike what is usually expected from the ‘hag horror' genre Winters' character isn't a mean-spirited villain but instead a grief crippled mother too susceptible to conmen in her life. And then we debate the relative evil of the two main child characters with me leaning toward innocence more than malice. This is something best left to each viewer to decide on their own, methinks!  If you have any comments about this year's Holiday Horror or possible choices for the next thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We hope everyone has a great end of year celebration and we will be back soon with a short episode about our favorite films of 2025.

In this festive episode of the Libertarian Christian Podcast, host Cody Cook and guest Jacqueline Isaacs unpack her viral 2011 article A Christmas Carol: A Capitalist Story. Despite Dickens' socialist leanings, the story he crafts actually depends on free markets—without Scrooge's wealth, there's no life-saving operation for Tiny Tim, no turkey for the Cratchits--no redemption arc at all. Isaacs argues capitalism isn't the villain; it's the stage. Even selfish Scrooge fuels prosperity via the “invisible hand,” while transformed Scrooge proves voluntary generosity trumps state poorhouses. Also: which political demographic are the modern day Scrooges? Does the Grinch make a case for commercialism? Which film adaptation of A Christmas Carol is the best? And the oft-forgotten anti-slavery verse in "O Holy Night." Wing Han Tsang was from Hong Kong and started singing as a hobby when she moved to New Zealand. Surprisingly, she made it kinda big. "South Park" even parodied her back in the day.3. "I Got a Cold for Christmas" by the Three Stooges. Not terrible, but not exactly a classic.6. "Jingle Bells" by William Shatner, featuring Henry Rollins. Yes, THAT Henry Rollins.7. This one has a cameo by a pre-Oval Office Donald Trump, who offers Rudolph a job in place of Santa.10. "Jingle Hell" by Christopher Lee. Yes, one of the greatest actors of all time. He dabbled in heavy metal later in life. This actually isn't his only holiday song, either. He also did covers of "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night".11. "Away in a Manger" by the Brady Bunch. This one only features the vocal talents of Marcia, a.k.a. Maureen McCormick. Sisters Who Scene It

Send us a textKatie and Bridget cheer on Mary Lou Retton doing backflips as Tiny Tim as they re-watch the WEIRD 80's movie: Scrooged! It's one of the strangest adaptations of A Christmas Carol and we blame BILL MURRAY JUST. CAUSE! Come along as we meet Frank - aka Scrooge, who is a jerk for about 90% of this movie, so much so that a grandma dies offscreen because of his horrible advertisement commercial that reminds us of A Manson Family Christmas. Aka, how television and media basically is today! When he gets visited by three ghosts to help teach him what it means to be kind (and to also kick him in the balls multiple times), he learns that Christmas isn't about television or making money... It's about reconnecting with your long lost girlfriend who really should have just ignored your missed call and/or replied to you with a "who dis?" message! We've got a movie that feels like it should have been directed by Tim Burton with lots of Bill Murray ad-libbing that you'll definitely want to take an edible for this holiday season! Released in 1988, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwait, David Johansen, Carol Kane, Alfre Woodard, and Robert Mitchum.

Send us a textThis holiday story gets new gears. We sit down with the Riverside Community Players team bringing a steampunk A Christmas Carol to life—complete with in‑the‑round staging, layered costumes, and a cast that looks and sounds like Riverside. From the first “God bless us” to the final curtain, the conversation uncovers how a first-time director balances reverence for Dickens with the courage to reimagine the world he wrote. We talk through Sage's path back to the stage, the decision to lean into steampunk aesthetics, and the practical realities of building a show where minimal sets and 360-degree sightlines demand bold blocking and clean storytelling. Kit Wilson shares his approach to Ebenezer Scrooge—mining classic performances without echoing them, researching 1843 London to ground the character's arc, and finding the moment where regret turns into change. We also spotlight Tiny Tim, played by Jasper, whose enthusiasm and resilience bring rare authenticity to a role that carries the play's soul.Behind the scenes, the creative engine hums: meticulous costume design that fuses Victorian texture with industrial flair; prop choices that do the heavy lifting when scenery stays lean; and a rising scenic designer crafting a modular world that moves as fast as the story. An assistant director with movement training helps the ensemble build truthful relationships, so every corner of the house sees intentions as clearly as words. Expanding the cast unlocks fresh voices and sharper narration, while a commitment to diversity ensures the stage reflects the Inland Empire community it serves. If you love theater that honors tradition and still surprises, this one's for you. It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas.  And when, exactly, is it okay to start listening to Tiny Tim's playlist of Tinsel Tunes?   Robbie and Jay tackle the tough issue of timing: can you listen to Jingle Bells prior to Thanksgiving?  Or will Grandma get run over by a reindeer if you get ahead of the game?  Then, once it is allowable to listen, what style is preferred?  Jay promotes his subscription music service and Robbie runs through the seemingly endless list of Christmas music channels on SiriusXM.   Art was out enjoying a potluck (did he get the better end of the deal?), but the remaining Guys had Geeks of the Week, of course.  Jay is grateful he got his personalized Funko Pop figure before the company goes out of business, and will probably have to rely on eBay to complete his collections.  R obbie takes listeners through the trials and troubles of the Walking Dead lawsuits (can zombies sue?), and shares news of yet another potential streaming service takeover that could shake up the whole game.  Listen and sing along: this one is Holly Jolly.

Scrooged and Emotional Intelligence | The Shadows PodcastThe 1988 holiday classic Scrooged isn't just a funny, chaotic, Bill-Murray-fueled Christmas movie—it's one of the most emotionally rich, psychologically layered holiday stories ever put on screen. Behind the sarcasm, the ghosts, the TV-network chaos, and the unforgettable final monologue is a message that hits deeper than most people ever realize: emotional intelligence is the real holiday spirit. In this episode of The Shadows Podcast, we break down Scrooged through the lens of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, emotional triggers, leadership, relationships, and the power of personal transformation. Whether you've seen the movie a hundred times or you only remember Bill Murray yelling “Feed me, Seymour!” on live television, this episode will change the way you watch it forever.Frank is the perfect example of how unresolved childhood wounds, workplace pressure, and distorted self-worth shape adult behavior. We break down:Why Frank's sarcasm is actually a defense mechanismHow over-achievers numb themselves with workWhy “success without connection” leaves people emptyEmotional burnout, holiday stress, and the cost of avoiding vulnerabilityYou'll see Frank's emotional triggers—and maybe even a few of your own—more clearly than ever. Each ghost in Scrooged represents an EQ checkpoint:Past: self-reflection, childhood imprinting, identityPresent: situational awareness, emotional blindnessFuture: consequences of unhealed patternsWe talk about how the movie uses humor and shock to highlight empathy, compassion, and the life-changing impact of perspective-taking. Tiny Tim isn't the heart of this version—Grace and Calvin are.Frank's transformation is chaotic, hilarious, and deeply human. We explore:Why real change looks “messy”Why relationships need repair, not perfectionHow EQ helps us reconnect with the people we pushed awayWhy showing emotion isn't weakness—it's leadershipFrank's final monologue is more than a holiday moment. It's an EQ masterclass about connection, gratitude, forgiveness, and emotional courage. We bring the film into today's world with real-life examples:Perfectionism during the holidaysOverworking to avoid emotionsEmotional withdrawal after burnout (especially in leadership roles)The pressure to look “fine” when life feels overwhelmingHow unresolved pain shows up as anger, sarcasm, or distanceIf you've ever found yourself short-tempered during the holidays, overstretched at work, or emotionally disconnected around the people you love—this episode will make you feel seen.Awareness: Notice your emotional patterns before they hijack your holiday.Empathy: Everyone is carrying more than you know. In the heart of Old Town Winchester, Winchester Little Theatre (WLT) buzzes with anticipation as the cast and crew prepare for their much-loved production of "A Christmas Carol." In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sits down with director Sara Gomez, cast members Robert Delancey (Scrooge) and Jonathan Ryall (Bob Cratchit), and board member Tim Bambara to uncover the magic, challenges, and community spirit that bring this holiday classic to life. A Theater with Heart and History From the outset, it's clear that WLT is more than just a venue—it's a vibrant community hub. Tim, who first joined the theater three years ago, describes his journey from newcomer to board member, emphasizing the welcoming nature and high standards of the theater. “We operate with professional theater standards,” he notes, “but it's all community-driven.” Director Sara Gomez, a veteran with over 30 productions at WLT, highlights the unique challenges of staging a large-scale musical in an intimate space. She explains how the theater's size demands attention to detail, from period-accurate costumes to creative set design. “The audience is right there,” she says, “so we have to be meticulous.” Casting, Community, and Commitment The conversation shifts to the cast's experiences. Both Robert Delancey and Jonathan Ryall are reprising their roles from the previous production of "A Christmas Carol," bringing continuity and depth to their characters. Robert shares his approach to playing Scrooge, balancing tradition with personal flair, while Jonathan reflects on the joy of returning to the stage after a long hiatus, encouraged by his daughter's involvement in the theater's youth program. Open auditions and a diverse repertoire ensure that new faces are always welcome at WLT. Sara describes the thrill of seeing first-time actors blossom, regardless of their background. The theater's commitment to youth is evident in its robust kids' program, which offers both musicals and straight plays each summer, nurturing the next generation of performers. Behind the Scenes: The Art of Live Theater Transitioning from the spotlight to backstage, the cast reveals the logistical feats required to stage such a production. With a cast of 26 and limited space, every prop and costume change is choreographed to perfection. Jonathan, who chairs the set build, recounts how a single table dictated the entire set layout, underscoring the ingenuity required in community theater. Moreover, the actors discuss the unpredictability and excitement of live performance. Mistakes happen, but trust and camaraderie among the cast ensure that the show always goes on. “It's like playing sports,” Tim observes. “You trust your team to pick up the ball if something goes wrong.” Engaging the Audience—On and Off Stage WLT's intimate setting blurs the line between audience and performer. The cast delights in post-show interactions, whether it's chatting in the lobby or being recognized around town. For many, these moments of connection are as rewarding as the applause. The theater's website and social media channels keep the community informed about upcoming shows, auditions, and volunteer opportunities. As a nonprofit, WLT relies on donations and the dedication of its volunteers to sustain its mission. Looking Ahead As the curtain rises on another season, the cast and crew of Winchester Little Theater invite everyone to experience the magic of "A Christmas Carol." With a blend of tradition, innovation, and heartfelt community spirit, WLT continues to prove that local theater is alive and thriving in Winchester.  For tickets, volunteer opportunities, and more information, visit winchesterlittletheatre.org.

It's Festive Friday and Alonso is here to help review another Christmas movie we missed from 2024, Ebenezer: The Traveler. ABOUT EBENEZER THE TRAVELER:Following the merriest Christmas day of Ebenezer Scrooge's long and miserable life, the day after finds him much less merry, and instead much more dead. Reunited with his old partner Jacob Marley, a no longer quite so Tiny Tim, and his beloved sister Fan, together they are tasked with earning their own redemptions, and regaining Scrooge's second chance, by crossing over time and the mortal plane to help guide others who are in danger of losing their way.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR EBENEZER THE TRAVELER:December 6, 2024 | VODCAST & CREW OF EBENEZER THE TRAVELER:Jerry Parisi as Ebenezer ScroogeAmanda Rae Dodson as Fan ScroogeMichael Bertolini as Jacob MarleyAusten Shane as Tiny TimLeland Prater as Simon OnyxBRAN'S EBENEZER THE TRAVELER SYNOPSIS:The movie starts with a man, Simon Onyx, looking straight into the camera and asking us what we're doing here. Well, obviously—we're here to figure out why the heck Ebenezer Scrooge is in present-day Oklahoma.Flash back to London, 1809. We get the classic Christmas Carol story to catch us up: heartbreak, dead business partner, three ghosts, merry Christmas—you know the drill.Scrooge returns to his house, thrilled over a shiny quarter. But then, the ghosts kill him. He comes face-to-face with Simon Onyx, who refuses to give him any real answers. Instead, Simon explains that Scrooge still has a shot at redemption. Simon opens a flaming book, and suddenly, Scrooge disappears. He's hurled forward seven years and finds himself standing alongside Jacob Marley, Tiny Tim, and Fan—all dead. They reveal that Scrooge himself was murdered, and now the four of them are bound together, dependent on one another for redemption. Oh, and Fan? She's Scrooge's sister, though he doesn't remember her. They wander around purgatory for a while, collecting mirrors that let them glimpse the soul they're meant to save: a woman named Angel.Cut to present-day Oklahoma. Their mission begins at a bar called The Boar's Den. Scrooge is immediately tossed out, so they seek out Angel's mom to learn more about her. Eventually, they track Angel to her workplace—a thrift store, oddly enough, run by a young version of Ebenezer Scrooge. Angel is fired for being too kind.Out of options, she goes to The Boar's Den for a job. The shady owner assures her he can “find something that'll work for a beautiful woman like you.” Bad vibes all around.Since Angel's true dream is to become a singer, Scrooge and Fan work to make it happen. They rescue her from the big bad guy and connect her with a local music manager. On Christmas Eve, Angel gets her chance to shine at a showcase—and she nails it. Her life is saved. As for Scrooge, Marley, Tiny Tim, and Fan? Looks like they're still stuck in purgatory.
