There are stories and stories within stories in Mahabharat. In this series, I will talk about lesser told stories of Mahabharat and some reflections on 'what could have been'. Today's story is of Bheeshma when Bheeshma kidnaps Amba, Ambika, Ambalika (princesses of Kashi) for the Kuru prince Vichitravirya. While Ambika and Ambalika get married to Vichitravirya, Amba refuses. Amba was in love with prince Salva but couldn't marry him and now she wants to marry Bheeshma. In this episode, we talk about what could be going through the mind of Bheeshma in such a tricky situation. This is his own introspection and a battle with his own values where he feels an invisible attachment with Amba. The story has been taken from "Bandhan", the first book of Narendra Kohli's #Mahasamar series. His illusion dispelled thanks to the secret spiritual knowledge imparted by Krishna; Arjuna desired to see the Lord's cosmic form. Krishna agreed and granted him the divine vision to see his incredible form. With the splendour of 1000 Suns blazing together, the supreme Lord of Yog, in that wondrous form, had innumerable faces and eyes, was decorated with many ornaments and garlands, and wielded divine weapons. Seeing the entire universe in His physique, the awestruck Arjuna bowed before that breathtaking form with folded hands. “O Lord, I see Brahma, Shiva, all Gods and beings in your infinite structure, that spreads everywhere without beginning or end, wearing a crown, holding a disc and club, and lustrous like a brilliant fire. I see you as the ultimate truth, imperishable and with unlimited power. With Sun and Moon as your eyes, and fire as your mouth, Gods take shelter in you, sages and saints sing your praise in prayers, while the celestials look at you in wonder. With many mouths, arms, legs, and frightening teeth, your magnificence permeates the space while the worlds tremble at your sight, along with me. I have no courage or peace seeing your towering form, blazing eyes, wide-open mouths, and fire-like terrible teeth! I also see my enemies and warriors rushing into Your fearful mouths to be devoured by you. Have mercy and tell me, Who You Are?” “I am the all-powerful Time that has come to destroy the worlds,” declared the supreme Lord. “Even without your efforts, your mighty enemies will all be destroyed. I have already slain the likes of Bheeshma, Drona, et al., so, just get up and fight; victory is yours.” Trembling with fear at what he saw and heard, Arjuna praised the colossal Krishna as primordial God, omniscient and all-pervading, whom the evil dreaded, the universe rejoiced. Calling him variously as God of Gods, Father of the universe, mighty, valorous, and incomparable, an overwhelmed Arjuna saluted Him repeatedly and sought Krishna's pardon for his disrespects to Him out of ignorance. Unable to withstand the brilliance of the cosmic form, Arjuna then requested Krishna to return to His original pleasing form. The Lord obliged him, shed his Vishvarup, which none had seen before; which Arjuna, too, witnessed only by the divine vision, assumed his four-armed form and then returned as the two-armed Krishna. Krishna blessed Arjuna and proclaimed that those devoted to Him, who performed their duties, detached and without malice, would undoubtedly reach Him. India 2022 Directed by Amal Neerad
With the massive Kaurava and Pandava armies standing in formation against each other in the Kurukshetra battlefield, ready to launch an attack and start the war, Arjuna told his charioteer Krishna to take his chariot to the middle of the armies so that he could see clearly the warriors raring to go. Thus positioning himself at a vantage point between the 2 armies, what Arjuna saw before him made him dumb. Right in front, among his opponents, stood Bheeshma, the highly revered family elder, and Drona, the teacher dearest to him. Then he saw in both armies his relatives like grandfathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, nephews, sons, teachers, friends, and well-wishers all set to combat and kill one another. The very sight overwhelmed Arjuna with compassion, distress and sorrow, and he started sharing his deep emotions with his friend Krishna. “Seeing my own people arrayed against each other in this bloody war, I am losing my physical stability and mental balance; my mind is thoroughly confused, and I cannot hold even Gaandeev, my bow in hand. I see only misfortune and no good in killing the near and dear! I don't desire victory, kingdom, power, pleasures, and joy at the cost of people like these. What I get by slaying them cannot be pleasure but only sin. And having known that killing is a crime, should I commit this sin at all? This terrible war can destroy an entire dynasty and wipe out traditions. Then the families may give into vices; women can turn immoral and give birth to unwanted progenies, ruining all virtues and destroying the quality of life. And those who cause this are sure to get hell. Instead of committing this horrendous sin, I prefer to stand unarmed and get killed on this battlefield.” Devastated thus by anguish and grief, Arjuna threw away his bow and arrows and sat on the chariot itself in despair. Karna ruled the Kingdom of Anga. Once while riding along a street in his kingdom, he came across a little boy crying over the oil he had spilled on the ground. On enquiring, Karna realized that the boy's father had asked him to get the oil for him in a bowl and now, all of it was on the ground. Being generous, Karna offered to get the same amount of new oil. But the boy refused the offer and insisted that he got the same oil. Unable to leave the place without helping the child, Karna took the soil mixed with the oil in his hands and squeezed it hard with all his might. The oil droplets fell in the bowl held by the child. As the boy's face brightened up, Karna heard the wails of a woman. After the oil was entirely poured, Karna realized that the wails were from the soil in his hands. The Mother Earth (BhoomiDevi) was infuriated for the pain Karna caused to her for a mere bowl of oil. She thereby cursed Karna that at a crucial moment in his life she would hold his chariot back in the very same way he had held her in his fists. And this crucial moment, was the one during the Great War when all of a sudden, Karna's chariot gets stuck in the ground. Karna's charioteer Shalya refuses to help Karna and Karna is unable to pull it out himself. While this story focuses on the might and generosity of Karna, it shows us how the intent of the deed was immaterial. The intent was good; it was to help a young boy. Yet, Karna suffered. At another instance, when Bheeshma asked for water to drink, Arjuna shot an arrow into the ground (Bhoomidevi) and water gushed out to quench Bheeshma's thirst. It is said that Ganga changed her course to quench the thirst of her son. But here, the earth found no fault. It was fine if Arjuna did it, but when Karna does it, it becomes a point to curse. Along came curses that did come true Along came friendship that indeed was true Along came name, fame and glory But also came with it an unforgettable rivalry For opponents he was always the wall Between defeat and victory Little did he knew that he will forever become immortal In the pages of History -Unknown

In this group discussion, we try to assess Arjuna's mental state and understand the psychological changes that goes on in his mind. We also reflect on our own context in the modern times and find that there are several commonalities: - We talk a lot when we are confused, in the hope that we arrive at a right solution to the problem. - We do get confused with what is right, wrong Few observations we make: - Duryodhana talks out of fear & insecurity - Arjuna talks out of delusion We agreed that we all have to face our problems head-on AND still ask for help. We also discuss what should be our attitude when we listen to someone going through an emotional turmoil. At what point we have to talk? We should learn from Krishna, who is silent till Arjuna empties his emotions. We discuss how one's ego intervenes in decisions. Arjuna's emotional outburst seem to have rested on his concerns for himself (although he talks magananimously!) while Bheeshma and Drona would not have hesitated to kill Arjuna as it was their duty being on the Kaurava side. We also discuss how one can expand the sense of ego. There is discussion on the 'subjective' and 'objective' personalities and how this is important to understand the 'solution' offered by Gita to our problems. We also talk of 'caste' system and 'intermingling' of castes as an outcome of war and the consequent decline in family values. Finally, it is clear that Arjuna's problem in the battlefield few thousands of years ago is NO DIFFERENT than our problems of modern times. Therefore, the solution that was offered to him may also be applicable to us! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/happilyoga/message

Chapter 21 highlights the importance of the Navavidha Bhakti, or nine modes of devotion. By way of a parable narrated to a devotee, who went to Baba seeking peace of mind, Baba speaks about the importance of practising the Navavidha Bhakti in order to attain a peaceful and steady mind. Devotees' experiences and practices described in this Chapter teach us about these different types of devotion that we can adopt in our lives. A tip that can be useful to all of us can be found in the story of a devotee named V. H. Thakur, who once met the Kannada saint, Appa. Giving Thakur a copy of the “Vichar Sagar”, Appa told him that he would one day meet Sai Baba and receive His blessings. Later, when Thakur met Baba, Baba tells him that merely reading a spiritual text is not sufficient: "To achieve your goal on the spiritual path, you must read it mindfully, understand it, and then inculcate its teachings into your daily life." We can do the same when we read Baba's Charita. (A little about the book Vichar Sagar - Nishal Das (1791-1863), the author of Vichar Sagar, was a very prominent Vedanta scholar, whose work was written in Brij Bhasha (Hindi) and later translated into Marathi. The book is about the metaphysics of the Upanishads, and the philosophy of the Advaita Vedanta and the non-dualistic approach mentioned in the Vedas. Many Hindu theological colleges use this book in their curriculum.) Another story is about Anantrao Patankar, a resident of Pune, who went to Shirdi for Baba's Darshan. After prostrating at Baba's feet, he said, "I have studied the Vedas, the Vedanta and the Upanishads, and listened to all the Purans. Yet my mind is restless. Without peace of mind, this knowledge is futile. I have heard how easily you give peace of mind to many people by your mere glance and playful words. So please take pity on me and bless me." Baba then narrated to him the parable of the mare who passed nine lumps of dung before a merchant, who swiftly collected the lumps. Later, Dada Kelkar explained the meaning of the parable to Patankar. The mare is God's grace, and the nine lumps of manure are the nine modes of Bhakti that Lord Shri Ram explained to Shabari. The following are the nine modes of Bhakti (Navavidha Bhakti): 1) Shravanam – listening to the attributes, excellence and wondrous achievements of saints. 2) Kirtanam - recitation 3) Smaranam – recalling and meditating upon the names and perfection of the Lord. 4) Pada Sevanam - washing and kneading of the feet. 5) Archanam – ritualistic worship 6) Vandanam - adoration, 7) Dasya – service (including menial work) 8) Sakiya - cultivating fellowship 9) Atmanivedan - surrendering of oneself. The names of the devotees who were known to practise each of the above types of Bhakti are: 1) Shravanam - Bala Bhate, Khaparde, Bheeshma, Upasani, Shama, Ram Maruti, and several other devotees 2) Kirtanam - Dabholkar, Gavankar, Das Ganu, Moreshwar Pradhan, Bheeshma, Adkan, B. V. Deo, and the Tendulkar family 3) Smaranam - Shama, Mahali, Megha and Nachane 4) Pada Sevanam - Laxmibai Khaparde, Mrs. Pradhan, Abdullah, Tatya, Bhagoji, Butti, Khaparde, Bheeshma, Dabholkar, Nimonkar, Bala Bhate, and Dhumal 5) Archanam - Dr. Pandit, Moola Shastri, Jyotindra Tarkhad and Nachne 6) Vandanam - Sapatnekar 7) Dasya - Abdullah, Nivaskar, Radhakrishna Mai, Mhalsapati, Bayaja Mai, and Nanavalli. 8) Sakiya - Shama, Chandrabai Borkar, Bade Baba, Dr. Pillai, and Jyotindra Tarkhad 9) Atmanivedan - Dikshit, Swami Saisharnanand, Radhakrishna Mai, and Megha Many of these devotees practised more than one mode of Bhakti. Baba laid a great deal of emphasis on Shravanam, and everyday in Shirdi, there were regular readings of Jnaneshwari, Bhavartha Ramayan, Guru Charita, and Eknath Bhagwat. Baba often sent a devotee to get Dakshina from Jog or Dikshit, and the devotee would get the answer to his doubt upon hearing the chapter being read that day. All of Baba's devotees, like Chandorkar, Dikshit and Khaparde, have graduated from the class of Shravanam. Because Baba favoured this type of Bhakti, devotees never failed to attend the readings by Dikshit and Khaparde. SHRAVANAM The following are two incidents highlighting the significance of Shravanam, as encouraged by Baba. In the first incident, a devotee named Pansare visited Shirdi, where he soon became friends with Jog. Jog would ask Pansare to sit and listen to him while he read the Jnaneshwari. But, Pansare, not paying any heed, would go and sit in the Dwarka Mai. One day, Baba sternly said, "You don't listen to the Jnaneshwari being read by Jog, nor do you read it yourself. And as soon as you wake up, you come here. Now go and sit with Jog." Pansare had no choice but to obey Baba. The second incident is about a non-believer who ended up doing a Parayan of the Charita. This is the story of Ramchandra Deshmukh, a resident of Shirdi, who did not believe in Baba. Once, his daughter fell ill, and was...
