This is another Puranic story from the great epic the Mahabharata. It is about an incident where the eldest of the Pandava brothers, Yudhistira, was in an incredibly difficult situation and had to answer a series of questions that were put to him. Not only were the questions quite extraordinary but his answers were also. They demonstrated his outstanding character, and while a warrior King, he also had the heart and mind of a great saint. One of the questions was "what is the most wonderful thing?" to which he answered - "The most wonderful thing is that although every day innumerable creatures go to the abode of death, still a man thinks he is immortal." This speaks to the fact that if we were more conscious of the reality of our body's immortality, that the time we will spend in this current body is finite and quickly passes, it would necessitate that our life be more purposeful, that our relationship be of greater significance, and that we act with more kindness, compassion, and love.

No matter what our problems are, but we always connect to stories from Indian Puranas that help us to stay strong in life. The Pandavas and Kauravas from the Mahabharat always fought with each other. The Pandavas lost all their wealth and kingdom in a dice game against the Kauravas and had to go incognito in the forest for twelve years.  The Pandava brothers were unhappy and upset with the hurdles. Yudhisthira felt miserable for putting his family through all the troubles. He was helpless and homeless. At the time of immense sorrow, Yudhisthira met a storyteller, who lived through ages, had fought death, and had the boon to be immortal by Lord Shiva. He knew the past, present, and future because of his severe penance. He was Sage Markandeya- the greatest storyteller from the Puranas. He also has a Purana in his name, the Markandeya Purana. Sage Markandeya is the son of sage Mrikandu and Marudmati. He was born after several prayers to Lord Shiva. Markandeya grew up to be one of the greatest devotees of Lord Shiva. At the age of 16 when he became aware of his short life span, he started to meditate non-stop. When Yamraj himself came to take him away, Markandeya refused to go and hugged the shiva linga tight. The shiva linga split into and from the middle appeared Lord Shiva himself. He pushed Yama to the ground and defeated him. He then revived his life back and told him that he was punished. After Yamraj left, Lord Shiva was immensely impressed with Makendeya and blessed him with a boon to be immortal. Since then Markandeya has been living through ages. Sage Markendeya narrated a story to Yudhistir to cheer him up. He explained to him that everyone has to go through unhappy times once in their lives. He narrated the story of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. After listening to the story, Yudhistira's heart and mind calmed down and he was then filled with courage. After the twelve years of exile, they will have to stay in hiding for one more year. And in the thirteenth year, if anyone found them, they would have to go into exile for twelve more years. But will Yudhistira accept this challenge knowing well that it was impossible to beat Shakuni in the game of dice?  The Slaying of Sishupala Sishupala, the King of Chedi, was an invited guest to King Yudhistira's Rajasuya sacrifice ceremony. He had accepted Yudhistira as his emperor. But when Yudhistira decided to offer Krishna his first worship as the most revered man present in the audience, Sishupala lost his cool. He had an old animosity with Krishna, and he lashed out at him with outrageous insults. Krishna tried to stay calm, but finally he couldn't take it anymore. Kondisi normal, Kartu pra-kerja adalah sebuah kartu yang digalangkan dalam rangka program pelatihan dan pembinaan warga negara Indonesia yang belum memiliki keterampilan. Lantas apakah kartu pra kerja kali ini bisa berjalan efektif utk membuka peluang korban phk mendapatkan pekerjaan kembali? Berikut perbincangan saya bersama bersama peneliti Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), Bima Yudhistira.

Today on the show I'm speaking to Yudhistira Agato, vocalist and guitarist for the band Vague, guitarist for the band Jirapah, music journalist and translator for Vice Indonesia, and one of my oldest friends. I first met Yudhis back in 2007 at a Converge show in Brisbane when he was in Australia studying and we used to hang out at shows all the time. In 2010, he moved back to Jakarta where he started to get involved in the underground music scene, playing in bands and organising shows. In 2016, Yudhis started working as a translator and writer for VICE Indonesia when they opened their Jakarta office. He's since written a lot about experimental and underground music in Indonesia, and he's interviewed Rich Brian, Kamasi Washington, Khruangbin, My Disco, and many others. You can find links to Yudhis's writing in the show notes; not all of it is translated into English, but a good chunk of it is.Yudhis's main project is a Revolution Summer-inspired post-hardcore band called Vague. He plays guitar and sings in that project and they're quite active in the Jakarta underground scene; they play shows pretty regularly and in the last few years they've been releasing a lot of splits with other underground bands from Southeast Asia. Their newest release is a split with the band Wreck, which is out on HEMA records as a digital release and a 7". They also have splits out with Killeur Calculateur (Kuala Lumpur) and The Kuda (Bogor). All of them are amazing bands and well worth your time. Besides those split releases, Vague has one full-length called Footsteps, which you can find on all the streaming platforms.Yudhis also plays guitar in the band Jirapah, which is a Jakarta-based project that has played in all kinds of different formats. Their most recent release is an LP called Planetarium, and it's available a pay- what-you-want download from Bandcamp, and it's on all the streaming services as well. This interview covers quite a lot of ground. We start by talking about Yudhis's projects and move into talking about the differences between VICE Indonesia and VICE in Western countries like Australia or the United States, the politics around choosing what language to use when writing lyrics, the unique relationship Indonesia's underground scene has with corporate sponsorship, and what's new in Jakarta's experimental music scene.NOTE: A bit of background noise in this one - sorry! Episode 7 - This episode covers the marriage of the three princes Dhritarastra, Pandu and Vidura.  Here's the map I promised of India during the time of the Mahabharata.  What's important to notice is that first, the Kuru nation was in a very central location and must have been very important in the politics of the age.  The Himalaya mountains acted as an enormous bulwark, keeping each kingdom safe from attack from the north.  Thus the marriage alliances seemingly secured peace with neighbors to the west and south, and Pandu was able to wage a military campaign against the kingdoms dowstream along the Ganges to the east.It is interesting how Pandu eventually thought of his natural father and tried to convert to a Brahmin later in life, giving up the crown.  In addition to all that, the five Pandavas (good guys) and the 100 Kauravas (bad guys) are born, then Pandu dies, leaving his five sons orphans.  Everyone agrees that the eldest Pandava, Yudhistira should be the first in line for the throne, but his blind uncle King Dhrtarastra has good reason to be resentful for how things worked out, and he won't let us forget it!

Episode 96 - Arjun returns home with some bad news and some good news.  The bad news is that they have lost their powers and have lost their friends.  The good news is that they finally get to retire.  Yudhistira doesn't hesitate.  He strips off his fine garments and leads his brothers into retirement.  Krpa is put in charge of defense, Yuyutsu is made regent, and Parikshit is king.  Parikshit's grandmother Subhadra (Krishna's sister) is made Dowager Empress.The Pandavas then take a final tour of India, visiting even the former site of the magical city of Dwarka.  Finally, they head north, for Heaven, with their little dog Dharma.
