It was a day beyond everyone's wildest expectations and so much fun. The chairperson of the parade, Ella, wrangled her wonderful and generous parents into renting a truck which they decorated with stars, banners, and balloons. Keerthi and Sharanya chaired the Pear Festival booth, Julia cooked up delicious treats for the 25th-anniversary party, and Sean, the official BTSYA videographer ran around shooting stills and videos. Children planted seeds to take home as part of the Plant the Seeds of Literacy program, books were read to enthralled children, many freebies were distributed, and the sweet sensations of being part of a vibrant, inclusive community were in the air. Sharanya and Keerthi host a program about a critical topic that affects Americans: gun control. Reducing gun violence is challenging because of the polarization around the issue. Keerthi talks about advocating for the Second Amendment while also requiring safety for gun storage. They interview teen activist, Amelia Vander May, who led a youth team to successfully lobby an ordinance in Santa Barbara that requires firearms to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock. Amelia spearheaded the Santa Barbara Youth Council initiative to write and lobby for a safe storage ordinance aimed at preventing youth gun deaths. For a year, she gathered public support for the ordinance, worked with city advisory groups and nonprofits, and presented to the city council. The ordinance, which requires firearms in residences and vehicles to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock, was passed into law and became effective in April 2024. Created to reduce gun violence, the Safe Storage Ordinance prevents unauthorized access to firearms, lowering the risk of unintentional injury, mass shootings, and gun suicides. She talks about how teens must get involved, even though many adults don't take young people seriously. She suggests that teens be professional, do the research, get involved, and have those difficult conversations. Make others aware that guns are dangerous. Banning guns is not a feasible solution. We need bipartisan support and community outreach. Background checks, safe storage methods, services for mental health, addressing racial disparity, and healthy discussions are avenues for creating a safer environment. Sharanya shares a history of firearms and the U.S. grappling with the high rates of gun violence. What are the root causes? Tune in for an educational conversation about reducing gun violence. Many of us lead very fragmented lives. If we're lucky, we set aside a couple hours a week to what really lights us up in between our busy "9-to-5"s and hectic social and family obligations. I find it very inspiring, therefore, to connect with people like this week's guest Sharanya Rao, who succeed in "bringing their whole selves" to their day to day and follow their passion. Sharanya is an expert on making transitions, having lived in 4 countries, and changed careers from being a commercial litigation lawyer to government and then to becoming a professional coach. Now, as the head of Global Coaching Works and the Artistic Director of Leela - An Indian Community Theatre, she focuses on empowering individuals and developing their potential through Co-Active Coaching, mindfulness and creativity. She is a champion of diversity and inclusion, and a true believer in the power of community. In this episode, we touch on numerous topics including: The concept of a Third Culture Kid (TCK), and the implications of straddling the cultural norms of three countries (India, Singapore, and the United States) on adaptability and authenticity. Further, how this unique background helped Sharanya navigate a career shift from law into leadership coaching. An overview of Leela, and its showcase project Anklets in the Boardroom, a project story-telling inspired in part by the Theater of the Oppressed and leaders such as Deepa Purushothaman; how these initiatives helped Sharanya follow her passion and give voice to South Asian women struggling with workplace discrimination. Exciting announcements for the Leela team, including funding from the City of Austin and a partnership with Austin PBS. The concept of svadharma and how can it help us achieve the show's mission of breaking free of templates How somewhat "dodgy" questions in the foreign service application process contributed to Sharanya's disenchantment with this profession How the field of coaching, and connections formed through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) provided Sharanya with a community where people would "bring their whole self to work." Sharanya's journey into spirituality starting with her introduction to Swami Chinmayananda at the age of 14 The lifelong learnings at Chinmaya Mission in oneness / Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam / "The World Is One Family" You can connect with Sharanya via numerous channels, notably her LinkedIn profile. Vrishin's Bio: I am Vrishin Subramaniam (he/him), IAR, CFP® candidate, and Founder of CapitalWeOriginally born and raised in New Delhi, India, I came to the USA when I was 17 to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A little over a decade later, I have worked as a technology consultant, lived in 7 cities, gotten married to my lovely wife Sharanya, and picked up a liking (plus a license!) for Scuba diving. We have been calling the DC area (Arlington, VA) home for just under a year, although we do spend a considerable time in sunny California!I want to make financial planning more accessible to more people (especially people on an H1b or GC) while eschewing the suit and tieIn 2014, I graduated college without a job offer lined up, so I moved to the Bay Area in search of a job. Desperate after a couple months of non-stop job searching, I took the first offer I got, which paid a low salary (by Bay Area standards). I found it challenging to cover bills and rent even while being paid a “coveted” bay area tech salary. In order to make ends meet, I quickly became obsessed with optimizing each dollar and eventually with the FIRE movement (Financial Independence / Retire Early). After speaking with friends, family and colleagues who were all struggling with similar challenges, I realized this is a universal problem.Having learnt about investing, I wanted to find a good advisor who would be able to round out my spreadsheets and was willing to work with young professionals, but found the advisors either had high minimums or were trying to sign me up for sub-par financial products to earn their commissions. I started CapitalWe to relieve financial stress for all young professionals as they transition between various stages of life: school, marriage, home-buying and all other firsts!Social:https://www.linkedin.com/in/vrishin/Twitter: @Vr1sh1n

The violence involving deadly weapons such as firearms has become a more significant issue by the day in our world, and we continuously live in a world of fear that it can happen to us at any time. Hosts Sharanya and Hannah along with reporter, Nihal, discuss the severe problem of gun violence in America. In 2020, firearm-related deaths reached 45,222, an average of 124 per day. The number of mass shootings has risen exponentially since 2013, more than 303 since the beginning of 2023. Unregulated ghost guns and military style assault weapons are on the rise. Gun control is a pressing issue that demands attention in our society. In light of increasing gun violence incidents, it is crucial to explore ways to enforce stricter gun control measures. Sharanya penned a poem to end gun violence. The final two stanzas: “Let this poem resound, a call to unite, To end the senseless violence, to make things right. For in our shared humanity, we find the key, To heal the wounds of gun violence, and set hearts free. May this verse be a plea, a beacon of hope, That gun violence diminishes, like a darkened slope. With compassion as our weapon, let us unite, And in our unity, we'll conquer the night.”

Drugs may seem like an easy solution to your problems, but they just create new problems. • Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio • https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ • https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/ NFTs: https://www.StarStyleCommunity.com
Sharanya Deepak on The Baffler article, "India's Beef with Beef: Vegetarianism as a tool for punishment and surveillance." Also, 'The Past Inside the Present with Seb Wüepper.
Ruhani and Sharanya tackle the woke movement in the 21st century. Wokeness has brought greater attention to issues of social justice and inequality, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and ableism. This has led to increased activism and advocacy for marginalized communities and has sparked important conversations about how to create a more equitable society. Wokeness has led to changes in how we talk about and represent different groups of people. This has included the adoption of more inclusive language, such as using “they” as a gender-neutral pronoun. Wokeness has also challenged traditional power structures, such as white supremacy and patriarchy, and has called for greater diversity and inclusion in all areas of society. This has led to increased scrutiny of institutions like the police, the government, and the media, and has sparked calls for reform and change. The rise of wokeness has also contributed to political polarization, with some people seeing it as a threat to traditional values and others embracing it as a necessary step towards progress. This has led to intense debates and disagreements about the role of government, the limits of free speech, and the future of democracy. An increased emphasis on the differences between Democrat vs. Republican is apparent. Both Ruhani and Sharanya share original personal poems. The woke movement is not what people think it is. It is not wokeness at all. Instead, it is a human society that has fallen into yet another pothole of both the ego and unconsciousness. - Teal Swan • Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio • https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ • https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/ NFTs: https://www.StarStyleCommunity.com

“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” Estee Lauder Advocacy: any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others. It's encouraging when a man starts the conversation advocating for the rights and freedoms of women. Hosts Rose and Hannah, both female empowerment activists, interview Nihal who firmly believes that women should have equal rights to men in all areas of private and public life, including education, employment, and political participation. He donates money to a family in India to send a girl to school. Hannah puts women's advocacy into context and offers methods to speak up and support women. She launched her own charitable organization, Hannah's Project, which is dedicated to the empowerment, education, and equality of women through education and literacy. Rose was inspired by many courageous women including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tarana Burke, and Masha Amini and offers a background on the movements formed around their advocacy.. Sharanya joins the conversation with a tribute to literary pioneers in feminism, Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. She also sheds light on the horrific lobotomies that were performed on “hysterical” women, such as Rosemary Kennedy. Women and men are equals. It is the responsibility of every person in every nation to eradicate the patriarchy and embrace equality for all. “There's something so special about a woman who dominates in a man's world. Why is water so important? About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in icecaps and glaciers, in the ground as soil moisture and in aquifers, and in humans and animals. Hosts Rose and Hannah talk with reporters Sharanya, Kirpa, and Nihal about the meaning of H2O. Sharanya reads an original poem, Kirpa discusses public health, Nihal reports on droughts and how to minimize water usage, while Rose and Hannah have a conversation about the extreme effects of climate change and global warming. No one can deny that our planet is warming and our glaciers, rivers, and lakes are diminishing. We must ALL do our part to save our world and all humanity. Sharanya sits in the host chair to discuss the shock and sadness of terrorist attacks, especially that of 9/11/01. She wasn't even born when it happened, but the aftereffects of that horrific day linger in the hearts and minds of Americans. The aftermath affected not only the survivors and the families of the fallen, but ordinary, law-abiding citizens whose skin color, religion, heritage, and customs were similar to that of the perpetrators. Immigrants became targets of hate crimes. Islamophobia, verbal and physical harassment, and detention became rampant as panic permeated. Peace is a five letter word with the ability to embrace individuals and their differences to create a safe atmosphere with no hostility. Peace is a choice that the world must choose. Sharanya, who is the teen chairperson for the Be the Star You Are!® booth at the September 24 Pear and Wine Festival in Moraga shares her admiration for the event, her love of pear pies, and encourages everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area to come celebrate this joyous occasion in a beautiful venue. Cynthia Brian will be selling and autographing her new children's book, No Barnyard Bullies, with proceeds benefiting BTSYA. Express Yourself!™ teen radio reporters and hosts will be in attendance for a meet and greet. It is going to be SO MUCH FUN with games, food, music, activities, art, wine, and inflatables for kids. “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” ? Maya Angelou Hannah, Ruhani, Keerthi, and Sharanya stand up for all women. Keerthi offers an insightful, yet humorous take on creating interesting characters for fiction writing, especially for the female gender. Hannah dives into the dangerous effects of the recent overturning of Roe. v. Wade which took away women's reproductive rights and jeopardizes female healthcare. Ruhani talks about the troubling truth - women only make up .5 percent of recorded history! That's not entirely surprising, considering history is written by the victors, and in this patriarchal society, men have been victors since the beginning of time. Her original poem focuses on this disparity. Sharanya provides a literary history lesson about women pioneers in literature and how they changed the writing world. Since Mesopotamia,, male scholars dominated the arena. Sharanya reads her original poem, “Unnoticed”. More than ever, it is NECESSARY for young people to make their voices heard against oppression and discrimination of women and girls. Here are ways you can join the fight for women's reproductive rights and empowerment: • Sign petitions against discriminatory and restrictive policies targeted towards women's health (especially now, since the Supreme Court members have repeatedly stated their conservative and religious bias against other forms of healthcare such as contraceptives). • Join abortion rallies and protests, or even start your own with permission. • Spread the word to your friends and family! Discussing these issues with close individuals and your peers can have a significant positive impact on the movement. • VOTE. VOTE. VOTE! Vote like your life and rights depend on it. They do. Support candidates who unequivocally support women and abortion rights! • Donate to organizations and abortion funds, such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Center for Reproductive Rights, National Women's Health Network, and more! “Food is everything we are. It's an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. Its inseparable from those from the get-go” – Anthony Bourdain Everyone loves to eat. But what is the cultural aspect of the foods we consume? Food culture is the practices, attitudes, and beliefs as well as the networks and institutions surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of food. In this lively discussion about something every human on earth indulges in, host Rose invites Sharanya, guest Alix, and Nihal to the table. In her segment, The Scribble, Sharanya meshes two of her favorite things, writing and food, to create a cinquain poem about hot dogs. In the second segment, Rose and her long-time food sister, Alix, engage in a worldwide tour of great restaurants, the culture behind the food, and the importance of sitting down with family and friends to dish it up over delicious cuisine. Nihal shows us how the world is connected through the love of cooking and expressing culture through food, usually throughout generations. Are you hungry yet? Remember, you are what you eat. Bon Appetit!

Our show Cyrus Says is now 1000 episodes old!! And to celebrate this incredible feat, we are joined by the people who made this podcast happen from the first episode. We had Mae, Sharanya, and Amit on the first panel sharing stories from the time when Cyrus Says began and how it slowly & steadily evolved into something a little bit better or maybe not. After that, we had the OGs from our previous studio, Abbas, Sravan & Amit, discuss all those crazy in-studio (and sometimes outside) instances. We were also joined by our tech-support team or the lads that made Cyrus happen digitally throughout lockdown. Yes, they are Antariksh, Vinay & Hrishi. And lastly, we had one more panel, which consisted of people who are trying their best to finally bring in some ‘positive' changes to the show. It was Meghnad, Sparsh, Abbas, and Antariksh. We also got many lovely messages from the #BroachaJantaParty Fam! Today there were no topics, just pure nostalgia. So tune in for this and much more!Check out Cyrus Says merch:ivm.today/3PLKo1mJoin the Cyrus Says fan created Discord Server: https://discord.gg/BMNJ3ftkMmDo follow Mae, Sharanya, Amit, Meghnad, Abbas, Antariksh, Vinay, Hrishi, and Sparsh on Instagram.Do send in AMA questions for Cyrus by tweeting them to @cyrussaysin or emailing them at whatcyrussays@gmail.comDon't forget to follow Cyrus Broacha on Instagram @cyrus_broacha (https://www.instagram.com/cyrus_broacha)In case you're late to the party and want to catch up on previous episodes of Cyrus Says you can do so at: www.ivmpodcasts.com/cyrussaysYou can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the new and improved IVM Podcasts App on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios
In today's episode I am joined by Sharanya Deepak to talk about her personal essay Morphing Flashbacks, she wrote for our print collection Nostalgia in the Periphery. The essay is an intimately written piece that deals with themes of memory, anxiety and body image in various stages of the authors life.
