Vasubandhu was a 4th–5th century Indian Buddhist monk, philosopher, and co-founder of the Yogācāra school of Mahayana Buddhism. Renowned for his works on Abhidharma, he developed key philosophical concepts such as “consciousness-only” (vijñaptimātra) and authored texts on Buddhist metaphysics, logic, and meditation. His influential treatises, including Abhidharmakośa and Thirty Verses, significantly shaped Buddhist thought in India, Tibet, and East Asia.

Just Awakening: Yogācāra Social Philosophy in Modern China (Columbia University Press, 2025) uncovers a forgotten philosophy of social democracy inspired by Yogācāra, an ancient, nondualistic Buddhist philosophy that claims everything in the perceptible cosmos is mere consciousness and consists of multiple karmically connected yet bounded lifeworlds. This Yogācāra social philosophy emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries among Chinese intellectuals who struggled against the violent Social Darwinist logic of the survival of the fittest. Its proponents were convinced that the root cause of crisis in both China and the West was epistemic—an unexamined faith in one common, objective world and a subject-object divide. This dualistic paradigm, in their view, had dire consequences, including moral egoism, competition for material wealth, and racial war. Yogācāra insights about plurality, interdependence, and intersubjectivity, however, had the capacity to awaken the world from these deadly dreams. Jessica Zu reconstructs this account of modern Yogācāra philosophy, arguing that it offers new vocabularies with which to reconceptualize equality and freedom. Yogācāra thinking, she shows, diffracts the illusions of individual identity, social categories, and material wealth into aggregated, recurring karmic processes. It then guides the reassembly of a complex society through nonhierarchical, noncoercive, and collaborative actions, sustained by new behavior patterns and modes of thought. Demonstrating why Chinese Buddhist social philosophy offers powerful resources for social justice and liberation today, Just Awakening invites readers to think with modern Yogācāra philosophers about other ways of building egalitarian futures. Jessica X. Zu is assistant professor of religion and East Asian languages and cultures at the University of Southern California, Dornsife. She received her Ph.D. in Religion from Princeton University in 2020, and her Ph.D. in Physics from the Pennsylvania State University in 2003. She is an intellectual historian and a scholar of Buddhist philosophy. Her research uncovers surprising ways that ancient Buddhist processual philosophy was reinvented by marginalized groups to seek justice, build community, and change the world. Because Buddha Purnima (the full moon celebrating the birth, death and enlightenment of the Shakyamuni Buddha) is so close to Chinnamastā Jayanti, when we celebrate the self-decapitating form of Mā, this year I decided to combine the two themes into one lecture. Having already explained the symbology of Mā Chinnamastā in last year's talk to some extent, this year I want to focus on the theme of "decapitation" that we often see with forms of Mā. What does it really mean to be "decapitated"? But first, to lead up into our idea of decapitation, we present a few radical and thrilling ideas from the most idealistic, non-dual traditions of India: Vasubandhu's Yogācara Buddhism and Gaudapada's Ajāta Vāda as a kind of nod to the dizzying flights of Buddhist and Advaitic metaphysics! May this be an offering at the lotus feet of the Buddha, the sanest man who ever lived.May this be an offering to Mā Chinnamastā!Support the showLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrM

This is a reading of Manjushrimitra's the Bodhicittabhavana, a seminal early text of Ati Yoga.Mañjuśrīmitra (d. 740 CE) was an Indian Buddhist scholar. He became the main student of Garab Dorje and a teacher of Dzogchen. He was a resident at Nalanda University where he became a respected Yogācāra scholar and practitionerAs explained by Yeshe Donden, "Manjushrimitra wrote the Bodhicittabhavana, in order to explain Ati Yoga to the Mahayana Buddhists who were in the majority in India at that time, and in particular to his fellow scholars from Nalanda University. Experts have determined that the work is written in the style of a learned Indian scholar, using the philosophy of post sixth century A.D. Mahayana Buddhism. Meditation on the Bodhichitta presents the Ati Yoga Semde teachings in a logical, intellectually cogent way with a high level of scholarly coherence. In this work, Manjushrimitra emphasized that intellectualism and logic do not bring about enlightenment and that “Those who seek the Truth should embrace direct experience if they hope to acquire realization.” We can see that Manjushrimitra has gone far beyond the concept of Bodhichitta found in Buddhist sutra and tantric writings and arrived at an understanding of Bodhichitta as presented in Ati Yoga (where it means the essential nature of mind, or awareness)."

Exploring Canine and Urban Art Adventures: A Sarcastic Journey Through Dog Personalities and Street Art in Las VegasKey TakeawaysDogs possess unique, expressive personalities that demand individual attention and care.Las Vegas boasts a vibrant art scene, filled with murals, street art, and sculptures.Engaging with urban spaces and pets reveals unexpected insights into society and environment.Understanding Dog Personalities: More Than Just PetsDogs, often referred to as 'man's best friend,' demonstrate a profound complexity in their emotions and behaviors. This transcript offers a whimsical overview of the distinct personalities of three dogs—Yogi, Bri, and Doug. Each dog has a specific set of preferences and quirks, impacting how they interact with their owners. As Mike notes, "You can't treat them like they're all the same either, because she, Bri, will not respond to aggressive approach. It'll shut her right down."It's fascinating how Yogi's need for varying levels of interaction—whether it be alone time with 'mama,' 'daddy,' or both—is a strategic move to avoid the need for what Torya humorously dubs "Operation fix Yog dog." Meanwhile, Bri thrives on the company of her entire pack, eagerly ready to yodel at anything new, from toys to adventures. Dogs like Bri are defined as having a "toddler mixed with a crackhead" energy by the speakers, acknowledging their high energy levels but affectionate nature.Doug, affectionately labeled as the "curmudgeon" due to his older, more laid-back demeanor, reflects the complexity of pet personalities shaped by past experiences. The transcript reveals, "He was really badly abused before we got him…it took a lot of patience…to pull him out of his shell."The appreciation for these different traits highlights a broader societal theme: the recognition that individuality transcends just human experience. Taking a deeper look at these unique personalities not only enriches the human-animal bond but also enhances pet care practices, encouraging pet owners to address specific needs and acknowledge emotional cues. The Artistic Heart of Las Vegas: Street Art and MuralsLas Vegas is not just famous for its casinos and nightlife; it's equally celebrated for its vibrant art scene showcased through captivating murals and street sculptures. The hosts share their journey of documenting this underappreciated aspect of the city through their project, 'What Happens in Vegas.'Mike declares, "If you've never noticed something here in Vegas, we have a lot of murals and street art sculptures that are just, like, out on the street, very arty here." Venturing into downtown Las Vegas, they embark on an exploration that unveils a hub brimming with creativity and public art. Despite facing challenges in locating the elusive 'poetry walk,' the experience of engaging actively with the city's artistic side broadened their perception of Las Vegas beyond its stereotypical reputation. These public art installations are more than just aesthetic enhancements; they reflect the culture, history, and unique spirit of the community. By incorporating art into urban planning and community spaces, cities like Las Vegas foster a sense of belonging and pride while also providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work.Such endeavors serve as an invitation for both residents and tourists alike to engage with their surroundings dynamically. More importantly, initiatives like the 'What Happens in Vegas' video increase accessibility to cultural experiences and encourage exploration beyond the traditional tourist circuit.Navigating Urban Spaces with Pets: Adventures and ChallengesBringing the dogs along on an artistic adventure downtown is not merely a logistical challenge but also an exercise in understanding urban living through a canine lens. The transcript humorously touches on Yogi's unique habit of needing to sniff every blade of grass, with Torya stating, "Every single leaf, every single blade of grass. It all must be thoroughly sniffed and occasionally watered."Navigating urban spaces with a pet forces one to slow down and adopt a more mindful awareness of the environment. This exploration of public spaces with pets in tow encourages pet owners to consider the adaptability and behavior of their animals in new and sometimes overwhelming contexts, underscoring the importance of preparation and adaptability.Bringing attention to areas like "third and gas," the conversation also highlights the intersecting issues of homelessness within urban environments, suggesting nuanced experiences about societal aspects often overlooked by passersby. They mention encountering a "person sleeping under a tarp," bringing forth themes of empathy and awareness in cities where contrasts of wealth and poverty are stark.Urban adventures, when paired with the companionship of pets, can transform mundane urban environments into new explorative opportunities, offering a shift in perspective not only for the humans but for their furry companions as well. This insight encourages expanding beyond conventional spaces, urging individuals to tap into potential adventures within cities that can be rewarding both culturally and socially. In examining the diverse personalities of dogs through the lens of a scenic adventure in Las Vegas, insights emerge about the profound connections between pets, people, and the environment. The amalgamation of art, humor, and empathy in the transcript reflects a broader societal implication—whether meandering through art-rich downtowns or interpreting the unique behaviors of pets, there's always more beneath the surface waiting to be discovered.TimestampSummary0:15Yogi's Adventures and Artistic Exploration in Las Vegas3:15Experiencing Downtown with Yogi Amidst Homelessness4:24A Misguided Poetry Walk and Starbucks Branding Changes7:38Unique Personalities and Dynamics of a Household's Pets11:37Building Trust and Understanding with Abused Dogs14:11Dog Personalities and Mischievous Counter Surfing Adventures

This episode is the first of a trilogy:What is Vat?What is Pitt? What is Kaph? Vat is the more proper spelling of the dosha which is transliterated as Vata in the Western world and pronounced as "Wata". Since Sanskrit has no letters, its "alphabet" is rather a syllabary, much like the Japanese katakana and hiragana, where characters represent full syllables instead of consonantal or vocalic sounds that have to be combined to make syllables. When a Sanskrit syllable has no vowel at the end, a minuscule "A" sound is attached to it, and since Western alphabets don't know of these short or "half vowels" the transliterations frequently add a full "A" sound at the end. Furthermore, familiar words such as Yoga and Ayurveda are actually "Yog" and "Ayurved" in their original Sanskrit form, they just get a full "A" sound appended at the end. Vat or Vata is one of the three ayurvedic doshas and is the dosha of people with a physiology that is marut-predominant. It is divided into the five sub-doshas listed below (spelled Western style) on which Vaidya Mishra elaborates in this episode covering the functions and the parts of the physical body that each of them governs: 1) Prana Vata2) Udana Vata3) Samana Vata4) Apana Vata5) Vyana Vata

How is suffering connected to the concept of self? Should people in horrible situations attempt to remove themselves from those environments or try to improve their plights in any way; or should they merely free themselves from suffering by releasing their "craving" for well-being and their "aversion" to misery? Why would the dissolution of the self free someone from suffering? Are we identical to our bodies and/or minds? Is attention the same thing as the self? Is the concept of "no-self" analytical or empirical? How does "flow" differ from distraction? Is it irrational to pursue our own happiness without regard for others? How and where do Buddhist ethics overlap with the ethics taught by (e.g.) Abrahamic religions? What are the roles of meditators in Buddhist monasteries? What do Buddhists believe about god(s)? What do they believe about reincarnation? Is reincarnation different from rebirth? What is the role of the Buddha himself in Buddhism? A reading of excerpts taken from Chapter 1 of The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra - translated by Suzuki and Goddard. The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra was first translated into Chinese in the 5th century and has been the subject of many treatises and commentaries. It is a distinctive and influential philosophical discourse in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. The sutra recounts a teaching primarily between Gautama Buddha and a bodhisattva named Mahāmati ("Great Wisdom"). The sūtra is set in mythical Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas. The Laṅkāvatāra discusses numerous Mahayana topics, such as Yogācāra philosophy of mind-only (cittamātra) and the three natures, the ālayavijñāna (store-house consciousness), the inner "disposition" (gotra), the buddha-nature, the luminous mind (prabhāsvaracitta), emptiness (śūnyatā) and vegetarianism. It is also notably an important sūtra in Zen Buddhism, as it discusses the key issue of "sudden enlightenment".

It is because God is using you in ways that you may not understand now, but one day you will. One day you will see how God used your affliction to prepare you for an incomparable weight of glory." -@therealsweetspot "Taking time to rest challenges us to believe God is working even when we are not." - @worthyofgrace "The more you sit in the Self, the more you will begin to feel an energy that you have never experienced before. It comes up from behind, rather than in front where you experience your mind and emotions. When you are no longer absorbed in your melodrama but, instead, sit comfortably deep inside the seat of awareness, you will start to feel this flow of energy coming up from deep within. This flow has been called Shakti. This flow has been called Spirit. This is what you begin to experience if you hang out with the Self instead of hanging out with inner disturbances. You don't have to get rid of loneliness; you just cease to be involved with it. It's just another thing in the universe, like cars, grass, and the stars. It's none of your business. Just let things go. That's what the Self does. Awareness does not fight; awareness releases. Awareness is simply aware while everything in the universe parades before it. If you sit within the Self, you will experience the strength of your inner being even when your heart feels weak. This is the essence of the path. This is the essence of a spiritual life. Once you learn that it's okay to feel inner disturbances, and that they can no longer disturb your seat of consciousness, you will be free. You will begin to be sustained by the inner energy flow that comes from behind you. When you have tasted the ecstasy of the inner flow, you can walk in this world and the world will never touch you. That's how you become a free being-you transcend." - Michael Singer, The Untethered Soul  "Wherever there is Shree Krishna, the Lord of all Yog, and wherever there is Arjun, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be unending opulence, victory, prosperity, and righteousness." - BG 18.78
