In this episode, Adam Stoker and guest Bill Geist discuss a critical issue facing destination marketing organizations: a growing disconnect between boards, CEOs, and political stakeholders. They discuss the misalignment between boards and destinations, the impact of COVID-19 on the industry, and the importance of effective board orientation. Bill emphasizes a need for better communication, storytelling, and proactive strategies to foster understanding and support within DMOs. “You cannot explain what it is we do to somebody over lunch, there's just not enough time and it isn't professional. Orientation should be an all-hands-on-deck, 2 to 3 hour immersion in what we do because what we do, almost nobody out there understands.” -Bill Geist If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! One of the reasons why we wanted to start a podcast was to tell the tale of advocacy of our sector across major moments, both present and past. With our guest today we get to actually talk about advocacy an entire millennium ago and how it shaped a destination's future. You might know him as Chief Instigator for DMOPROZ and fellow podcast host of DMOU, but today, Bill Geist has joined us to go back to the late 80s and early nineties about the WRIGHT for Wisconsin and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Monona terrace convention center in Madison Wisconsin. Even though we do have the benefit of hindsight, I believe many of the discussions and activations are of yesterday, the advocacy work is still relevant today. It is hosted by Andreas Weissenborn and Jack Johnson and produced by Relic.

In 2020, Bill Geist and Mike Gamble jointly pennd a white paper for Destinations International on the pressing need for greater board diversity. In this episode of the Future of Tourism, they join David to talk about the events and impact of the last 18 months: locally, globally and on the social justice front, offering advice on diversity, equity and inclusion. Geist is the founder of DMOProz, aka Zeitgeist Consulting, and host of the Destination Marketing Organization University (DMOU) podcast. Prior to forming Zeitgeist, he served as president/CEO of the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau and has served as president of the Wisconsin Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus and vice-chair of the Wisconsin Governor's Council on Tourism. Gamble is founder of Tourism Diversity Matters and co-founder of SearchWide Global, a full service executive search firm. Prior to TDM and SearchWide Global, Mike was senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, held various leadership roles with Marriott International and has served on the foundation boards of Destinations International, PCMA and MPI.
On this episode of DMOU, Bill Geist hangs with Bentonville CVB CEO Kalene Griffith to drill down on how her DMO has become a model of community engagement. From weekly meetings with key community leaders to being engaged in virtually everything that screams Bentonville, Kalene has developed an agency that is a true Shared Community Value. You'll hear her strategy for engaging community leaders, building a rock star staff...and how Rugby prepared her for leading her organization.
This week on the Future of Tourism, David is joined by Bill Geist, the Chief Instigator at DMOproz. Together, they discuss three key attributes that will play a dominant role in the success of global tourism: stakeholder engagement, digital excellence programs and the creation of community-shared values around tourism activities and outcomes. As destinations around the world begin to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, one thing is certain: they'll need to clearly and effectively communicate with their local communities. Residents may be hesitant to promote tourism to their region, and destination organizations may encounter challenges similar to those faced by destinations that are grappling with over tourism.
Bill Geist takes a rare turn as both host and guest in another special COVID-19 edition of DMOU. The past few weeks have seen DMOs come to the aid of hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions like never before. But now, DMO Boards have a meaningful role going forward to ensure that their Organizations are sustainable. From ensuring that community leaders are kept abreast of the Organization's efforts to save local businesses and jobs to working to diversify future revenue streams, Bill encourages DMO Boards to step up to the new opportunity to solidify their Organizations as a Shared Community Value.
Bill Geist from DMOproz (and host of the DMOU Podcast) joins the Destination Marketing Podcast. Topics discussed include his experience in Madison, Wisconsin, Destinations International, and his vision of the future of Destination Marketing. "The political side is crucial because we have to figure out how public money can match up with private money so that we can make the case that this is a great place for quality of life, entrepreneurs, and yeah - visitors" - Bill Geist on the expanding role of Destination Marketers in the public eye.

Bill Geist is the Chief Instigator at DMOproZ, a firm specializing in strategic planning, governance, marketing, and legislative issues for convention and visitor bureaus, tourism-focused chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and communities. Prior to forming DMOproZ, Bill served as the President/CEO of the Greater Madison (WI) Convention & Visitors Bureau. Bill is the author of Destination Leadership and a contributor to Fundamentals in Destination Marketing. He has provided consulting services to over 200 DMOs since 1995 and is a popular speaker on marketing trends and destination development across North America. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I speak with Bill about the shifting role of the DMO. Marketing is just the tip of the iceberg. DMOs have a larger leadership role to play in the economic fortunes of the communities they serve. It starts with an attitude of service, of giving back. What You Will Learn on this Episode: Why DMOs need to speak up on economic development issues in your communities The role of advocacy in DMO work What DMOs can do better than the internet Why understanding who you don’t appeal to is as important as understanding who you do appeal to Why storytelling is only going to become more important in the work of DMOs How to connect more with the community you serve as a DMO Destination Leadership Organizations Recently, we have begun discussing the expanding role that DMOs are playing and should play in their communities and now we’re thrilled to welcome a guest who has been promoting this conversation for a long time. Talk about great timing. Bill talks with us about the evolution of destination marketing over the past decades, and the need for destination leadership. He relates some stories of economic development missteps that could have been avoided if DMOs has raised their voice – but they thought it wasn’t their place. DMOs can be a critical conduit of information and stories that will help communities flourish and visitors fall in love and return again and again. This is a wonderful conversation on the leadership role DMOs can and should play. It’s Not About Heads in Beds Bill believes DMOs have often done a poor job of telling the story of their value to a community. At the end of the day, it’s not about heads in beds – what DMOs do is improve quality of life. They make their destination a better place to live. It comes down to communication. DMO directors would love to hear from you, and the community is waiting for leaders to sit down and talk about what’s happening, what they can promote and what stories they can tell on your behalf. It’s a two-way street, but Bill Geist is encouraging DMOs to take the lead! In this episode I talk with Willie Geist, co-host of the TODAY Show and Morning Joe, and a multiple time NY Times best-selling author. Willie is an old friend from Vanderbilt and I enjoyed interviewing at his office in NYC a few weeks ago. Willie chats about his book Good Talk, Dad: The Birds and The Bees…and Other Versions We Forgot to Have that he co-authored with his father Bill Geist. Good Talk, Dad became a NY times best-seller, without having any orders pre-sold through Amazon. This is a big deal, because the bulk of book orders in this modern day come from pre-ordering on Amazon’s website. Willie details why and his Dad wrote the book together, and how they marketed it to their audiences around Father's Day. Additionally, we dive into various chapters of the book. This includes reminiscing about the famed Big Sky Basketball Tournament @ Vanderbilt University that we both played in back in college. And a funny chapter he wrote about taking his daughter to a Harvard/Columbia football game. Willie also talks about how what it’s like crossing over to other shows like Andy Cohen’s Bravo Show, Joel McHale’s The Soup, and working with The Olympics with Brian Williams and Michelle Beadle. Andy Cohen and other friends were instrumental in helping to market “Good Talk. Dad,” helping it reach best-seller status.
