In the heart of Winchester, Virginia, lies a hidden gem—Uncle Beehive's Ice Cream. Established by Ben Rothermel and Katie Sartelle, this artisanal ice cream company brings joy and unique flavors to the local community. Recently, host of The Valley Today, Janet Michael and Justin Kerns from Winchester Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau sat down with the duo to uncover their delightful journey. Janet opened the conversation by introducing Uncle Beehive's corporate headquarters as the place where the magic happens. Justin shared his initial encounter with Uncle Beehive, expressing curiosity and excitement at discovering the brand. His curiosity led him to delve into their story further. Ben and Katie shared their origin story. An ice cream maker gifted at their wedding and an inspirational ice cream session at Katie's father's house sparked their passion. With Ben's chemistry background and Katie's business insights, they began experimenting with recipes, and the rest is history. Operating from a commercial kitchen off Jubal Early Drive, the team faced many challenges, from mastering the ice cream-making process to navigating complex health regulations. They sold their initial batches at farmer's markets, gaining a loyal customer base. Their business thrived through the community's support, allowing them to upgrade equipment and expand their flavors. They sourced high-quality, local ingredients to maintain their artisanal standards, with crowd favorites like coffee bourbon chip and lemon pie gaining popularity. Janet and Justin sampled the ice cream and were visibly impressed. They praised the rich flavors and textures, noting how Uncle Beehive's commitment to quality set them apart. Conversations meandered through the logistics of expanding their reach, partnerships with local markets, and community support. Ben and Katie explained that while they didn't operate a traditional ice cream shop, they frequently hosted events, provided pick-up options, and supplied several local retailers, including Pizzoco, Bushel and Peck, Fleur de Lis Cheese Shop, and West Oaks Farm Market. You can order directly by reaching out via their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/unclebeehives Uncle Beehive's story is more than just making ice cream; it's about community, support, and passion. The duo's commitment to using natural ingredients and engaging with local businesses exemplifies the quality and care behind every scoop. Their dedication to the craft and community reaffirms why supporting local businesses is vital. Uncle Beehive represents more than just ice cream—it's a testament to how small businesses can enrich a community, one delicious scoop at a time.

In the bustling heart of Winchester, Timber's Cafe stands out as more than just a coffee shop — it's a haven where parents can relax while their kids play, and a community staple for coffee aficionados. We sat down with Kara Bridge, the dynamic owner of Timber's Cafe, to delve into the unique charm and offerings of this vibrant space. The Valley Today's host, Janet Michael, and cohost Justin Kerns from the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau led an enriching discussion at the cafe, capturing the essence of this local gem. Kara's entrepreneurial journey was inspired by her love for family, dogs, coffee, and a desire to create a kid-friendly environment. She shared how a sudden idea led to the birth of Timber's Cafe: "Driving home from work one day, it hit me. God spoke to me, saying to use my passions — family, dogs, coffee — and create something meaningful." This inspiration materialized into a cafe named after her family dog, Timber, symbolizing a legacy of love and community. Timber's Cafe's design caters to both adults and children. "We have two play areas: one for kids two and under, with soft climbing toys, and another for kids aged three and up, featuring a slide, Legos, and a play kitchen," Kara explained. The cafe also boasts a book nook, perfect for a quiet retreat with a good read. One of the key highlights of Timber's Cafe is its welcoming atmosphere. Kara is hands-on, ensuring every customer feels like family. Janet humorously noted that Kara embodies the spirit of 'we', doing everything from making coffee to organizing events. "It's just me, myself, and I, but I love connecting with everyone who walks through the door," Kara shared. Beyond everyday coffee enjoyment, Timber's Cafe serves as a versatile space for events. Kara offers the cafe for birthday parties, bridal showers, paint nights, and business meetings. This flexibility ensures the cafe remains a vibrant part of the community, catering to varied needs. Looking ahead, Kara envisions expanding Timber's Cafe to another location and possibly adding a food truck. Her ultimate goal is to continue fostering a sense of community and providing a welcoming space for families and coffee lovers alike. Winchester residents and visitors alike have found a haven in Timber's Cafe — a place where good coffee, community spirit, and a child-friendly environment converge seamlessly.

Jennifer Smith was halfway through high school when she visited California with her parents and decided to stay. A decade later, she conceived and launched C Magazine, a must-read publication that highlights the people and places that make California the Golden State. Then came the 2025 wildfires, destroying her Malibu home and those of many friends in her C community. Did that dim the lights on the California Dream? Not for Smith.“After a couple of tears, I was ready to rebuild,” she tells Lyn Winter, host of Rodeo Drive The Podcast, adding, “when you wake up every morning with that ocean outside as your backyard, and you hear the waves crashing, and at night you see the glistening moon over the waves and the sea, it's just so magical that you'll just do anything to keep having it.”Now Smith celebrates 20 years of C Magazine with the publication of a book of stories drawn from past articles: California: Dream State: Stylish Living from Canyon to Coast (Rizzoli, Fall 2025).Winter spoke with Smith about the deep allure and mythology of the West Coast, the evolution of fashion, art and culture over the last two decades, and about making a successful print magazine in the digital age. For Smith, it started with landing her first cover, featuring model Carolyn Murphy, thanks to a chance meeting over at a sushi counter in Malibu.“We just started talking, and I said, ‘I'm launching a magazine about California. Would you ever consider being on the cover?' And she said, ‘of course I would.' And then we had Kirsty Hume as our second cover, because she knew Carolyn did it. And then all of a sudden, I got Cindy Crawford, and then I got Claire Danes, and then it just, from there we kept going and going.”Smith explains that the key to success in publishing today is being more than a magazine. The C-team curates events together with advertising partners, many on Rodeo Drive, like the memorable dinner for 25 at Harry Winston, at which guests on the street of dreams were each presented with a silver domed dessert, recalls Smith.“And inside the silver dome was actually a piece of jewelry for each of the guests. So everyone was just expecting to see some piece of cake, and there was some million dollar bauble, and they all got to wear it. So they were dripping in jewels and eating their dessert, and we had the best time.”As much as she loves the city, Smith feels the call to the wild. The book contains sumptuous photos of lives lived well in the canyons, the coast, mountains and desert. The only challenge was picking from more than 200 issues of the magazine. She and her team looked for timeless stories “that stood out to us and that we would want to celebrate and see again and again.”Stories that made the cut include a feature on Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glaser in their weekend home “that was just so cool with this mountain, rocky, jagged, beautiful;” and the hat maker Nick Fouquet, in his “amazing house in Topanga that is very cool and architectural.”The current issue of C Magazine, compiled just after the recent fires, was designed as a love letter to California. ”I'm forever, endlessly in love with it,” she concludes.Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle Alfonso@rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, March 10, 2025. A major offroading trail expansion is expected to boost outdoor recreation and tourism in Eastern Kanawha County…the quirky draw of George Washington's Bath Tub attracts travelers to Berkeley Springs…and the Parkersburg CVB's new welcome center brings an increase in visitors …on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – A major outdoor recreation project in Eastern Kanawha County is poised to transform the area into a premier destination for off-road enthusiasts. The Appalachian Outlaw Trails is adding more than 2,000 acres of trails designed for ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and full-size vehicles like Jeeps and trucks. This expansion aims to attract tourists and outdoor adventurers from West Virginia and the entire East Coast. Currently featuring 25 miles of trails in the Upper Kanawha Valley, AOT has ambitious plans to double this mileage. The goal is to develop one of the most extensive off-roading parks in the nation, covering over 100,000 acres in the long term. The ultimate plan is to develop a comprehensive outdoor recreation resort complete with cabins, a concert venue, mountain biking trails, hiking paths, horseback riding areas, and clay shooting venues. The Kanawha County Commission is collaborating with AOT on this multi-phase project, with the initial focus on developing trails in the Quincy area. But of all the George Washington showcases, this reporter's favorite is a national park in the small town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. That's where America's first president was said to bathe in an open-air brick tub that reads, not surprisingly, “George Washington's Bath Tub.” It was filled with warm natural mineral spring water emanating from the surrounding mountainous countryside. What makes traveling to Berkeley Springs most enticing is that we can join, at least figuratively, Washington in sitting in a large indoor bathtub that can easily accommodate two bathers and is filled with 104-degree mineral water. It's situated in what's called the Old Roman Bath House at Berkeley Springs State Park. The Welcome Center, which opened in April 2022 after relocating to 113 Ann St., has continually seen more people each year, CVB President and CEO Mark Lewis said. The bureau and Lewis won the Excellence in Tourism Development award at the 2025 Hospitality University conference held Jan. 26-28 at the Greenbrier. The increase in tourism has enabled them to double the attendance at the Oil and Gas Museum and at Henderson Hall, while the main draw continues to be Blennerhasset Island Historical State Park. In the heart of Winchester's Old Town Walking Mall lies a hidden gem that exudes Celtic charm—Faire Isles Trading Company. In this episode of The Valley Today, hosted by Janet Michael, the store's unique story and offerings were brought to life. Joining Janet was Justin Kerns of the Winchester/Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with Stephanie Shahan, the passionate owner of Faire Isles. Stephanie recounted the serendipitous journey that led her to ownership of Faire Isles. Her love for Scottish and Irish culture inspired her to transition from enthusiast to business owner. Working with vendors at Scottish Games in 2014 planted the seeds for her venture. In late 2022, Stephanie's dream took flight when former owners Robin and Sandy passed the torch to her and her husband, Adam, marking a new chapter for Faire Isles Trading Company. The store now boasts an eclectic mix of traditional kilts, steampunk attire, pottery from Scotland, and beautifully crafted tweed handbags. During the conversation, Justin highlighted the postponed Inspiring Tourism Summit, now rescheduled for March 19th at West Oaks Farm Market. The summit offers local business owners crucial insights into the upcoming trends for domestic and international tourism in 2025. Stephanie's commitment to personalized customer service sets Faire Isles apart. Her willingness to go the extra mile, whether finding the perfect orange plaid handbag or researching a customer's tartan, exemplifies her dedication. For instance, Mayor Les Veach's request for his family tartan led Stephanie on a fascinating journey of historical research. The upcoming Celtic Festival in early March is a highlighted event, attracting both locals and visitors. Faire Isles will be at the heart of the festivities, with their garage door open, music playing, and perhaps a splash of whiskey to welcome attendees. Last year's success of the festival is expected to bring even more excitement and foot traffic this year. Janet and Stephanie discussed the importance of small businesses and their role in the community. Stephanie's connection to Winchester runs deep, having grown up there and now contributing as a local business owner. Justin praised Faire Isles for embodying the essence of a unique, locally-owned business, playing a vital role in Winchester's tourism appeal. The conversation revealed that Faire Isles Trading Company is more than just a store; it is a symbol of community spirit, heritage, and a passion for unique, quality offerings. Visitors can expect to find not only themed merchandise but also a welcoming atmosphere that makes them feel like part of the family. Stephanie encourages everyone to visit Faire Isles Trading Company at 11 East Boscawen Street, Winchester, VA. In this episode of Tourism Tuesday on The Valley Today, host Janet Michael and cohost Justin Kerns from the Winchester Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau discuss numerous topics, including the setting of their conversation, which takes place in the conference room of the Visitors Bureau—remarked humorously by Justin as more of a storage room. The conversation dives into the "Winchester/Frederick County Tourism Summit," an upcoming inaugural event designed to provide local businesses with valuable, state-level insights on tourism trends. The Summit aims to support local enterprises by offering fresh data and expert presentations, encouraging collaborations, and fostering community engagement. It's scheduled for Thursday, February 27th, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at West Oaks Farm Market, featuring several knowledgeable speakers and specialists. Justin also introduces the "Destination Ambassador Program," which resurfaced post-pandemic. This program aims to educate locals and business employees on how to provide enriching experiences for tourists, potentially making them certified ambassadors for Winchester and Frederick County. The conversation emphasizes the growing importance of tourism-related activities for local businesses, featuring discussions on how even traditionally non-tourist activities (like farming) can be intriguing for tourists from urban environments. The Summit and Ambassador Programs are highlighted as tools to better equip local businesses with knowledge, excitement, and collaborative potential for upcoming tourist seasons. In the latter part, the discussion shifts to local initiatives like FredCo Eats Restaurant Week and Winchester Restaurant Week, which bring excitement and engagement to local businesses during usually quiet times. These events showcase local eateries and food trucks, encouraging residents and visitors to explore and support the area's culinary diversity.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. West Virginia's giant salamander population serves as a monitor to the Mountain State's water quality…West Virginia Northern Community College receives a federal grant to support manufacturing education…and Weirton residents gear up for the tastiest event of the year: Weirton Restaurant Week…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Beneath the surface of clean-flowing streams in West Virginia, a multitude of strange creatures lurk, but none is perhaps more shocking to encounter than the hellbender. Also known as the devil dog, the mud devil, and the Allegheny alligator, its names testify to the strangeness of what turns out to be a giant aquatic salamander. These strange creatures thrive in only the most healthy streams. They are thus indicators of poor water quality, a concern in parts of West Virginia where the hellbender lives. Due to the impact of disease and habitat loss, the animal is listed as a vulnerable species though groups like the New River Conservancy. The conservancy is urging people in the New River watershed and beyond to comment on a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate it as endangered. “Not only does the presence of hellbenders indicate the rivers we rely on for drinking water are clean,” says Andrew Downs, executive director of the conservancy, “but this sometimes-strange-looking and beautiful creature is part of the identity of our region. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2025/01/07/monster-hellbenders-hiding-west-virginia-streams/ #2 – From WEIRTON DAILY TIMES – West Virginia Northern Community College has been awarded $1.5 million as part of the U.S. Department of Labor's $65 million Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grant initiative. WVNCC is one of only 18 institutions nationwide, and the only recipient in West Virginia, to receive this funding. The grant will fund WVNCC's M.A.P.S. 2.0: Manufacturing and Production Skills Pathway for the 21st Century. The program is a next-generation, industry-aligned skills pathway designed to support the revitalized manufacturing and production industries in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle. This initiative aims to build workforce education and training capacity in the Ohio River Valley region, focusing on sustainable and scalable change to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and next generation energy. Scheduled from Feb. 2-8, Weirton Restaurant Week is being organized by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce as a way to celebrate the local dining scene. Jeannette is joined by Don Welsh, the CEO and President of Destinations International. They explore the evolution of the travel and tourism industry, discussing how Destinations International has expanded from a U.S.-centric organisation to serving over 760 destination organisations in 31 countries. Don shares insights into the challenges of cultural diversity in global business, the importance of collaboration within the tourism ecosystem, and the pressing issues of over-tourism and sustainability. He also reflects on his own career journey, emphasising the value of authenticity, the importance of aligning personal values with professional opportunities, and the necessity of embracing failure as a part of growth. KEY TAKEAWAYS The transition from a U.S.-centric organisation to one that operates in over 31 countries highlights the importance of understanding and adapting to diverse cultural needs and business practices. Building strong relationships within the industry is crucial. Collaborating with other organisations, such as the World Travel and Tourism Council, enhances the ability to address common challenges and share best practices. The need for alignment between destination organisations, local communities, and political leaders is essential for sustainable tourism. Engaging stakeholders in discussions about responsible tourism can help mitigate issues like over-tourism. The journey through various roles in the travel and hospitality industry emphasises the importance of being open to learning and adapting to new challenges, which can lead to personal and professional growth. BEST MOMENTS "The complexity of these jobs have never been greater... how you're going to convene a group of people to deal with maybe over tourism or responsible or sustainable tourism." "I think when you work with different cultures, you have a much higher sense of emotional intelligence because if you want to succeed in different parts of the world, you cannot go in and expect to do business in the way that we do in the U.S." "We believe in the point of collaboration... at the end of the day, our focus is 100% on how the destination can do the best in serving, whether it's a leisure guest, a meeting attendee, or whatever it may be." "It's OK to question yourself. It's OK to say, how did I come across in that meeting? How did I deal with a colleague?" "Let's not reinvent the wheel. Let's learn from each other and grow together." Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Kathleen Bertrand. Kathleen Bertrand began talking in 2009 about a new film festival to attract people of color to Atlanta's growing film industry. From a discussion with her then CEO William Pate at the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, to talks with film enthusiasts and potential film partners, Bertrand began to assemble the team and resources needed to launch what was to become BronzeLens Film Festival, a non-profit organization. While everybody knew about Tyler Perry's Atlanta-based empire, Bertrand and her colleagues created a platform for broader engagement in the industry for people of color and did so in a way that showcased Atlanta and its history and culture. Under Bertrand's visionary leadership as executive producer, BronzeLens has grown to receive attention and accolades from across the country and around the world. It is a charter member of ARRAY (formerly AFFRM), the film distribution network founded by producer/director Ava DuVernay in 2011. BronzeLens has been mentioned in articles about film diversity in publications such as the New York Times, the LA Times, Atlanta Magazine, Oz Magazine, and Ebony Magazine. In late 2016, the festival was named as an Academy Award Qualifying Film Festival for the Short Film Award. This tremendous honor is one of only 3 such designations in the country for film festivals that support the work of people of color. In its most recent film season, the festival received film submissions from 59 countries around the world. BronzeLens has received two “Best of Atlanta” Awards from Atlanta Magazine: “Best Showcase for New Filmmakers,” and “Best Place to Break into the Film Industry.” Kathleen has received numerous awards for her work with BronzeLens. In 2016, she was given the Georgia Highlight Award, as part of the annual Georgia Film Gala. In 2018, she received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater Spelman College, which honored her careers in both hospitality and the film industry. Additionally, in 2018, she was inducted into the Atlanta Hospitality Hall of Fame, which also honored her dual careers in film and in hospitality. In 2019, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms presented Bertrand with the City of Atlanta's highest honor – The Phoenix Award. Recent honors include the 2023 Image Award presented by Atlanta Film Society, the Synergy Award from African American Film Critics Association and being recognized by Georgia Entertainment Magazine as one of “200 Most Influential of Georgia's Creative Industries.” Company Description *BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia is a non-profit organization, founded in 2009, that is dedicated to bringing national and worldwide attention to Atlanta as a center for film and film production for people of color. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Dec. 27, 2024. Older than the state itself, Warwood Tool continues to say #YesWV thanks to a hardworking, highly skilled workforce…sports tourism drives the development of recreational sports complexes throughout the state…a Ranson craft business expands with assistance from the WV Small Business Development Center…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVDED– Nearly a decade before West Virginia's statehood, a small business in what would become Ohio County began supplying products to Civil War soldiers. Since its inception, Warwood Tool has supplied products in every war and the town of Warwood, West Virginia, sprung up around the business. In 168 years of business, family is still the focus where company leaders prioritize and honor the traditions and skilled labor of the employees present, and owners past. The hard working, highly skilled employees at Warwood Tool are one of the reasons the business continues to say “Yes to West Virginia.” The tools that these employees help create serve many industries throughout the state and the nation, as well as other countries around the world. In Monongalia County, Mylan Park draws anywhere between 800,000 and 900,000 people a year to sporting events. Ron Justice, president of the Mylan Park Foundation, also emphasized the local economic benefits, citing job creation and increased spending in restaurants and hotels. On a similar path, Summersville is planning a large outdoor sports complex. And Charleston is preparing for a new indoor sports complex, which will transform part of the Charleston Town Center Mall. “Sports tourism nationally is recession-proof. Families will always travel for their kids to play travel sports,” said Tim Brady, president and CEO of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Back in 2017, founder and owner Marie Bressler decided to launch a website for her machine embroidery projects, but had difficulty finding good quality supplies. That's when she began to source her own craft supplies. With help from the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, she was able to grow her business from online to a brick and mortar establishment. Rodeo Drive has gone wild. Visitors to the luxury street have fallen in love with eight colorful, life-size sculptures of animals – Wild Kong, Standing Bear, Panda and Crocodile – designed by the French artist Richard Orlinski, and part of this summer's “Rodeo Drive Celebrates Fashion”.But sculptures are only part of Orlinski's multifaceted output. He was the artist of record at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, he mixes up art with music and stand up comedy, and he has partnerships with international brands including Lancome, Hublot, Puma, and Disney. Now he has written a book – Pourquoi J'ai Cassé les Codes, or “Why I Broke The Codes” – about his life of going against the grain. He stopped off recently in Beverly Hills, and talked with Lyn Winter, host of Rodeo Drive - The Podcast, about his unconventional approach to art and life, starting with why he chose to celebrate wild animals in his sculpture.Animals, he says, have much to teach humans, as they “obey a virtuous circle,” and kill only for food, while humans kill for nothing. He spoke about his personal experience with a violent father, which also laid the ground for his future self: “I realized very early that I have nobody to trust, so I was very alone. And when you like that, you're angry, and you want to succeed.”He says that his fighting spirit helped him deal with initial rejection from the Parisian art world, and develop his mass appeal with a sense of freedom to do his own thing. “I'm not like a niche artist,” he says. “I'm popular, but popular in a good way. I create an emotion, even a bad emotion, but it is emotion.”Orlinski explains his admiration for Andy Warhol, why he opened his own chain of Orlinski galleries, and how he treats art more like fashion - with seasons, and a branded experience that is meant to be fun for people of all ages. The future of art display, he says, is big spaces, where visitors can eat, spend time, and enjoy a multisensory experience. “The competition is always the same. So you have to create, invent something new, and I think the artist and the galleries and the people in this industry need to create something like that.”He also talks about his book, Pourquoi J'ai Cassé les Codes, which has been a hit with the French public. It's a self-help guide of sorts, delivering life lessons from his own experiences. “Many people are very thankful about this book, because it helps them to change, to listen to the little voice inside, to follow their dreams.”While seven of Orlinski's wild creatures will leave Rodeo Drive, one work will remain permanently on view. Which one might that be, asked Winter.“I think it's the Kong with a big heart, and written on the heart is ‘Rodeo Drive', responds Orlinski. “It fits with the place, and it was made for it. This is the only piece that was really made for it.”Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle AlfonsoListen, subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.Visit the website: https://rodeodrive-bh.com/podcast/Join us on Instagram @rodeodrive Hosted on Acast.
