Echoes Through Eternity with Dr. Jeffery Skinner

Mike Henry Senior-Making an impact on the work place. Follower of One. Make your work life count! Chief Instigator of Follower of One - He helps marketplace Christians integrate their faith & daily life.Coming soon, a new small group study titled the Marketplace Mission Trip: A Six-Week Mission Trip to Your Workplace. check out his website. https://followerofone.orgTranscript:Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (00:00.407)Welcome in to Echoes Through Eternity. I am your host, Dr. Jeffrey D. Skinner. I am joined in the studio today by Mr. Mike Henry, Sr. He and I connected on LinkedIn and I saw his ministry follower of one. It's just, I love the story he has there which is essentially that you are a missionary and I'll let him talk all about that and tell you all about that. But welcome in, Mike. It's good to have you here today.Mike Henry Sr. (00:29.198)Thank you for having me, this is a blast.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (00:31.763)Yeah. So, so tell us a little bit about Father of One and what that does, what your ministry is there.Mike Henry Sr. (00:38.402)So the ministry basically is an online community designed to help marketplace Christians integrate their faith into what they do every day. And it kind of came out of this idea that several ideas that have happened in my career, but I became a Christian when I was already in the workforce and it seemed like almost everything the church wanted me to do was something that made me leave work.or I had to get away from work to do it. And I just, I felt like it seemed strange to save me and then put me in a position where I can't do anything. And so I started asking God for ideas about what I could do and realize that there are so many things that we can be doing, but we think if we're not doing the church things, then we're not doing the right things. And all that kind of led into a 30 year journey that resulted in follower of one.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (01:36.687)That's great. That's great. And you're right. I mean, we argue, I've got a, I told you before we started out of a church planting background. And so this podcast kind of serves kind of three purposes. I want to primarily echo the voices of people like yourself and, and you'll reverberate those and it's called Echoes Through Eternity in that. Marcus Aurelius was famous for saying, you know, what you do today will echo through eternity. And, andMike Henry Sr. (01:44.614)Mm-hmm. Yes.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (02:06.875)so often the message that we clergy give to the parishioner, to the laity, which by the way, is not a separation between professional clergy and the people. It just literally means the work of the people is what it's talking about there. And so, I hope that clergy are people. I hope I'm a person. Everybody is people. And so, when we're talking about laity, it wasn't designed to say, okay,Mike Henry Sr. (02:17.413)He's drawing. Yeah. No.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (02:34.615)Here's the people and your job is basically sit in a pew and receive. And then if there's anything to do, they want you to come to the church, and we want you to do it at the church or within the church. And so this idea of the church becoming the center of all ministry was not even what Jesus did. Jesus did not begin his work in the temple. In fact, very little of his ministry took place in the temple. It was the temple that rejected Jesus' work.Mike Henry Sr. (02:38.791)Mm-hmm. Yeah. Exactly. Mm-hmm.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (03:02.299)And Jesus' message, you know, the temple essentially that crucified Jesus, if you want to say it that way, not the people, you know. Now they had a little crowd there in the end that they'd whipped up into a frenzy and they could say it was the work of the people, so to speak. But you and I know, you know, how that goes, right? So I love, but that's why I invited you on. I love your message at Follower of One. It's not about you. You're not the hero of that story.Mike Henry Sr. (03:10.253)Yes. Yeah. Exactly.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (03:30.191)It's individuals. It's all about them finding their purpose and connecting that with God. And we spend more than 40 hours a week, at the very least, at work. And so, if everything centers around the church, it's going to be very little time for ministry for you. It's going to happen on a Saturday. You're probably already exhausted from, and we say 40 hours. If you're working in a job, we all know it's probably more than 40 hours.Mike Henry Sr. (03:41.273)Yes.Mike Henry Sr. (03:57.658)yeah that's right well so I almost felt like I was adversarial with many of my pastorsDr. Jeffery D. Skinner (03:58.023)I have a wife as a school teacher. She works a lot more than 40 hours a week. Uh, so anyway, I just, I love your message. I love what you're talking, what you're doing there. And so you're right. So tell us how you say it was born out of that conversation with God. How long after you were saved before, how long did it take you to kind of discern that call in your life?Mike Henry Sr. (04:26.678)during my 40-year career. It's been over 40 years since I exited college. But I didn't become a Christian until I was 30. And all of my early challenges were when I would ask my pastors about different ideas that I had or what I wanted to learn. The answer was, sure, come back out to the church, come back out to the suburbs.I traveled quite a distance to work. I worked in industrial businesses early in my career, and then in big office buildings later in my career. And nothing was ever close to where I lived. And I felt like, because I couldn't get back out to the suburbs, that my best case scenario was to just stay out of trouble until Sunday. And I would even.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:06.541)Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:19.493)HahahaMike Henry Sr. (05:22.606)because this dates me, but going back, often people would use the term called into full-time ministry. And it just basically told me that I was a part-timer, that Jesus saved me, but I was just supposed to stay on the bench until the coach put me in on some key player. If somebody walked into my office and grabbed me on the shirt and wanted to know about salvation, I could help them, but there wasn't anything else for me to do.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:30.019)Right.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:35.125)Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:40.06)Mmm.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (05:52.416)Yeah, let's...Mike Henry Sr. (05:52.71)And I discovered that there are plenty of things to do, but you have to kind of disassemble some of the baggage and the meanings that we put on words. Mm-hmm.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (06:02.375)Yeah, you're right. We do. I'll use the term, mercenary missionaries. And so we have essentially, and I don't think we did it on purpose, but just accidentally, we communicated to the parishioner, your job is essentially to fund the ministry. And so you pay us or pay othersto do the ministry for you. So it's a, you know, kind of a mercenary force, mercenary missionary force there. And if we're to do ministry, we're going to take a vacation. We're going to go somewhere overseas. You're going to go to Haiti or we're going to go to Dominican Republic or we're going to go to some other, you know, place that we perceive that needs Jesus, so to speak. And I'm telling you that there's a lot of folks here in America that need Jesus. And that's not to necessarily say mission trips are bad.Mike Henry Sr. (06:42.598)Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (07:00.683)Um, you know, mission trips can be a very formative experience. The difficulty with that is that when we do that as with our children and our teens and we just, and even adults to a certain extent, as they begin to be the, the mentors and the chaperones for these trips is we accidentally communicate that missions happens somewhere else. Missions that's not happening here at home.Mike Henry Sr. (07:25.685)Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (07:26.279)A huge mission field, as you point out, is our workplace. So talk a little bit about what does that look like? I know you have it on your website and you also have a podcast. And we'll get to that in a few minutes. But it says you are a missionary. See how easy it is to follow Jesus at your place of work. So how does that work?Mike Henry Sr. (07:44.973)Well, and so we actually practice what we call five daily habits. And really there are six, I've since decided there are six. But the five that we talk about that we do every day are pray, appreciate others, know what we believe, serve others, and speak for ourselves.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (08:03.935)Yeah, that's good. And wow, what a powerful message there, because I think too often, at least today, in this divisive culture that we live in, it's almost like we are demanding that somehow people bow the knee to Jesus before they ever accept Jesus as their Savior, so to speak, you know? And then we've reduced that to saying a prayer.Mike Henry Sr. (08:25.948)Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (08:30.787)And so people say that prayer, Jesus come into my heart, whatever it looks like for them, pray the sinner's prayer, and or the ABC, accept, believe, and what was it, confess, accept, believe, confess. And so, we reduced salvation to that. So now I've got my get out of hell free card, and I'm a Christian, but there's nothing that connects us with that. So I love that, it starts with prayer.Mike Henry Sr. (08:49.681)Mm-hmm. Yeah.Dr. Jeffery D. Skinner (09:00.179)I love the idea of serving and, uh, you know, appreciating our neighbor. Loo

For people grappling with mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, there may be a belief that offering support to others who are facing similar struggles is not possible until they have completely overcome these issues themselves. However, in this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we had a conversation with Sue Bowles, who revealed why this perception is flawed. As a matter of fact, it only takes being one step ahead of someone to assist and encourage them in navigating their mental health journeys. You don't need to be fully cured to make a significant positive impact in someone else's life. Sue Bowles is a survivor turned thriver as an author, speaker, and Master Certified Life Coach. Having done the hard work of healing from a childhood rape, an eating disorder, other sexual assaults, and considering suicide, Sue now defines the effect the life-altering events have on her. The events no longer define Sue; she defines them. “You only have to be a step ahead to help the person behind you” is the bedrock to the value Sue brings. She founded My Step Ahead and is the “Chief Instigator” behind the new Dare to Believe Movement, whose purpose is to nurture others to ‘dare to believe that you matter,' knowing that nothing changes until that bedrock belief is solidified. Whether speaking on a podcast, a stage, or one-on-one, Sue's enthusiasm is contagious, shining the light of hope wherever the listener needs. In today's episode we cover: The first step to breaking the stigma around mental health struggles How helping others keeps you encouragedThe healing power of owning your storyThe coping mechanisms Sue used to cope with traumaWhat to do when you're having a dark dayHow Sue's faith helped her through her mental health strugglesThe impact therapy can have on your mental healthThe importance of honoring yourself The difference between ownership and stewardship We hope you enjoyed our conversation with Sue! With our guest today we get to actually talk about advocacy an entire millennium ago and how it shaped a destination's future. You might know him as Chief Instigator for DMOPROZ and fellow podcast host of DMOU, but today, Bill Geist has joined us to go back to the late 80s and early nineties about the WRIGHT for Wisconsin and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Monona terrace convention center in Madison Wisconsin. Even though we do have the benefit of hindsight, I believe many of the discussions and activations are of yesterday, the advocacy work is still relevant today. “When you pour into other people without expectation, things just come back to you so much easier.” Laura Templeton How can leaders create and maintain lasting and genuine relationships? Effective communication is crucial when networking and passing information. The ability to explain and clarify important information should be nurtured by all leaders who aspire to make these connections. Laura Templeton has been working with leaders and notes that it is important to be present and engaging when networking. Laura Templeton is the Founder and Chief Instigator at 30 Second Success, a company helping coaches, consultants, and service providers make better connections and obtain more business in 30 seconds or less. As a Global Speaker, Author of 30 Second Success: Ditch the pitch and start connecting!  and Brand Communications Consultant, Laura educates in-person and virtual audiences on value-based communications that take your creativity to the next level and help you step into owning and sharing your brilliance with confidence. An enthusiast for the written word, Laura is currently working on the next book in the 30 Second Success series. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring her new home state of Florida, spending time with family, friends, and Knox (her co-working dog), and teaching Archery to anyone interested in learning. In today's episode, Laura talks about the 30 Second Success formula, and how she helps people become better at what they do. She also talks about her book and the motivation behind writing it. Listen in! Social Media Links https://30secondsuccess.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/30secondsuccess/ https://mobile.twitter.com/30secondsuccess https://www.instagram.com/30secondsuccess/ https://www.facebook.com/30SecondSuccess/ http://bit.ly/YouTube-30SecondSuccess   Book: 30 Second Success: Ditch the pitch and start connecting!   I launched 30 Second Success business about seven years ago. I teach people a simple formula that that I use for myself on how to do the 30 second message. There's a lot of work that goes into the deep understanding of what it is that you're meant to do and who you're meant to connect with, and figure out how to put that into 30 Seconds or Less. The value comes in from helping people just figure out how they can live into what they're designed to do and really understand it. When we start positioning ourselves well as taking care of other people, we start serving other people, and it's not about what we get out of the relationship but rather what we give into the relationship. When you pour into other people without expectation, things just come back to you so much easier. You have to be willing to accept that you're not always the solution, and know that there's an opportunity for you to listen. Commercial break I do believe that there's always the right time for someone to finally sit down and write a book, and I did. The real value in my book is not just how to write your message, but how to create connections and networking as part of your marketing strategy. Networking is one of the most beautiful relationship models I've ever seen in my life. The book is designed to help people understand how to become a more effective networkers and get out of their own way, and how that will then transform their business. The benefit of virtual has really changed in the way that it also has given me access to a global community. My advice to people of the millennial generation is to align themselves with someone who has more experience in networking and is willing to take you under their wing. A lot of young people really have a hard time connecting with the people that they need to help them grow their businesses. There is value in being present and engaged with someone, and having that intention of really listening and asking them to go a little bit deeper with their answers to your questions. Believe in your ability to create the change you want to see in this world. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? Then when I notice headtrash or notice fear, worry, anxiety, and emotions that are creeping up, I do something with them, certainly, it usually means I need to communicate with someone in some way to decrease the stress associated with it. Thoughts on Breathing Most importantly, breathing is a really good thing. Even just starting today, a nice deep breath in and letting it out just gives me a sense of power in my body and clears my head. Therefore when I go to bed, it really helps to decrease that emotional stress. It goes back to that model that I shared. So when you decrease emotional stress, you gain clarity. And that allows you to take productive action. So even if the productive action is sleep, that breathing allows me to decrease and step outside of whatever is going on in that crazy brain. You will be able to listen and read along to what I wrote for the day. I like to practice what I preach when it comes to art so I am challenging myself to write and having you come along for the ride. It is my hope this inspires you to accomplish your goals with your art and if you would like to share what you are doing email me at timothy@createartpodcast.com History of NaNoWriMo and NaPodPoMo NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand new novel. They enter the month as elementary school teachers, mechanics, or stay-at-home parents. They leave novelists. NaPodPoMo: NaPodPoMo* is a month-long event along the same vein as National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo. The difference? Well, instead of writing a 50,000-word novel, you podcast every day for 30 days from November 1st-30th. Use any platform you desire. From full production studio to iPhone app and just about anything in between. The goal is to use the challenge of podcasting daily as a form of podcasting boot camp. Writing My Final Thoughts Thank you for tuning into this special episode of Create Art Podcast. Today I wanted to talk about what I learned about myself and my process throughout this past month and these two challenges. Why would you be interested in what I learned, well maybe some of the nuggets I got can help you out in your practice, or maybe just maybe this will inspire you to complete a challenge that you have never tried or succeeded at in the past. You may need this gentle nudge or as I like to call myself the Chief Instigator to get you moving on your artistic journey. If you did attempt or complete either of the challenges last month, namely National Novel Writing Month or National Podcast Post Month please let me know about your journey. I'd be interested in hearing about as I know it would inspire me on my journey. If you did another challenge let me know about that as well. I   First off, I want to thank those of you who either listened to or read what I wrote last month. My initial plan was to create a totally new novel. I had an idea banging around in my head for about a year on what the new novel would be, but I didn't have a clear picture on where I wanted to start it and where I wanted to go. At the last minute I remembered that in 2020 when I did the NaNoWriMo and NaPodPoMo I had started up a novel and gotten over 50K words done on that project, but I hadn't finished it. I pivoted and since I had put so much work into the first novel, I wanted to complete the process and since I didn't have strong feelings on the new novel yet, I didn't want to approach the challenge halfhearted. I had more emotion tied into the novel and I felt I could complete it. The first novel is called Shared Diary and the second novel doesn't have a name. My first lesson in this project was to be able to pivot at the last minute and be open to pivoting. When I start a project I wat to be emotionally attached to it, the reason being is that I want to have enough in my gas tank to be able to push through the tough times that life provides. It's similar to picking out a major in college, yes you want to be able to make a living from what you study and eventually will be making a career out of, but you also want to enjoy what you are doing. I chose theater as my major, now you could argue that I am not using my degree, but I feel that I am every day. The things I learned in school are applicable to real world experiences, my acting classes helped when I was showing transitioning soldiers how to interview, my movement classes showed me how to breath to provide relaxation which I teach employees in my current job. So, you are right, I am not using my degree in theater pedagogy in the traditional sense, but I am using bits and pieces of it that fit the need at the time. If I would have chosen a major in HR, which is what my day job is, I would have never gotten these skills that have pushed my career to where it is today. Being able to pivot and prioritize your work will help when life decides to give you challenges. Plus, if you work on something you are excited about, more than likely you will either finish it or in my case brin git closer to completion.   Another lesson learned was time management. With the NaNoWriMo challenge they provide an app that you can record your progress and look at what you have left to do. It also has you put in when you started writing and when you ended as well as where you wrote. In my situation it was at home on a laptop. When I look back at when I started writing and when I ended, I found that when I was alert and feeling good, I was able to write more on those days in a quicker time versus when I was not feeling my best or when I was tired.  So, I am learning to come to the work in a good mindset that is relaxed and open in order for me to do my best work, if I am not in that mindset, I know the work still needs to get done, but it may take longer. Since I work a day job and I have kids and a wife that I want to make sure get the attention they need, I let them know that November is going to be tough but I would ensure that the next month I would be spending more time with them. My wife is very supportive of my creative projects and aspirations so she was able to accommodate, my kids don't quite understand it, but they will when they get older and follow their creative practice. Each day I gave myself an hour or two to write, sometimes I had to take some time from work to get my writing done, sometimes I wrote in the evenings while my wife watched tv so I could be near her especially on a tough day with the kids. There were about three days I didn't write and that is because life just got really busy as it does and also, I do struggle with energy levels due to my MS diagnosis. These are not excuses as to why this year I got to 44K words and not 50K, these are things that happen and it was not a failure to not technically complete the challenges, I got farther along in my goal to finish the novel. Next year I definitely would stick to more stringent times, maybe wake up early and write while everyone else slept. Proper time management and including the unknowns that life will throw you should be in that plan.   Another lesson learned is to look back at your work and admire it. You put your heart and soul into it, on occasion you need to step back and look at what you have accomplished even though it is not complete. Ten years ago, if you said Tim you are going to write a 100K word novel I would have said you were nuts. For the longest time I told myself that I don't have enough material to fill a novel, I was a poet and a short story writer, however, as the piece sits right now, I am at 94K words. Now when I go back and edit it, I am sure there will be things taken out, but then there will probably be things put into it that balance that out. Don't say never, because if I would have believed that I could never write a 100K word novel I would not have tried to do it, my initial goal was simply 50K words and it has just about doubled that goal and when it is done, who knows how long it will be. When we take time and review what we have put on the canvas, the notebook, the piano or whatever your form is, we should allow ourselves time to appreciate it, take it in and remind ourselves that before we started the work, this was only a thought that we helped bring into the world. The world needs these ideas, yes, I did say needs these ideas. Look at any library, any school and what do you see, thousands of ideas being brought forth every day. Plus, when you realize what you have done, it does wonders for your mental health. We all have that inner critic and we need that critic to help guide us and direct us, but when that inner critic stops us from creating, that's when we need to tame it and make it do the work, we need it to do. When we look at the work in progress or the finished work, we can use that progress to tame that critic when it tries to stop us.   The last thing I learned is to prepare to put down the pen or paintbrush so that you can start new projects. Right now, I am running 3 podcasts, one of them has been idle for a year. So, there are other things I would like to do, other ideas bubbling up in my head and I need to find time to get them out into the world. I am planning on finishing the novel, probably in a month or two. I know I am close to the end and I don't want it to end quickly because then it looks like I am giving up on the novel. I am not putting a word limit on it right now, it's not needed. But I will put a time limit on it because I want to have time to work on other things and give them the attention they need.  I know some painters say a painting is never done, I don't feel the same way. There comes a time when you need to put it out into the world and share it with others and it may be difficult to know when that time is, experiment. You can always take it back into your shop and refine it and get it in a more completed place. Theater has staged readings, musicians have open mics to try things out, poets have open mics to do the same thing. Find ways to get the work out of the shop and into the world. You may have to brin git back and tinker with it, you may sell the piece and find out that it is perfect the way it is with imperfections.   Now what did I get out of this experience, well I accomplished a few things. First a sense of accomplishment. For many people that is the main reason that they do things because they believed at one point, they couldn't do it. I would have never in the past attempted something like this, I have close o 100K words on a novel and it's still not done yet. As a poet and a short story writer, I am really stretching my writing muscle to keep this story going. My largest work in the past was a thesis for my Master's degree which was about 50 plus pages talking about a production that I put on and why I made the choices that I did make. Just having the knowledge that I can do it makes me happy and content even if no one reads the story. Which leads me to the second thing I got out of this which was having people follow my podcast during this project. I was consistently getting about 15-20 downloads and people looking at my site and listening to the show. So, the story is out there in the world and people now know about it. I also know that some people were waiting until I finished the project before they downloaded the show and I am seeing people download the past episodes to catch up and see or hear what I am doing. This has the potential of increasing the audience numbers. On my other podcast Find A Podcast About I recently talked with the hosts of Writers Drinking Coffee who are novelists. Having the experience, I was able to extend my network and talk intelligently about writing. This gave me a new perspective and appreciation for the craft. It gave me a bit of expertise when I talk with you about writing your story.   Well, I appreciate you listening to this episode and coming on the journey with me. If you got something out of the podcast I'd like to ask you to share it with a friend who may be struggling with their inner critic. Reach out to me for questions and show ideas timothy@createartpodcast.com There is not much left to this year, I have a KDOI Rebroadcast coming up soon and a year-end wrap up both via live stream and an episode. I am planning for 2022 so if there is something you would like me to talk about or you want to be on the show reach out. Now go out there and tame the inner critic and create more than you consume. Go make art for someone you love, yourself. See ya next time.   Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. You only turn 400 once. So for this special 400th episode of Recruit Rockstars Podcast, I knew you were counting on me to land a very special guest. I think I bagged the elephant. David Cohen is Co-Founder (and now Chief Instigator) of the legendary Techstars venture accelerator. It’s birthed over 2,300 startups. (You know their names: SendGrid, Outreach, SalesLoft…) And for 20-minutes, we discussed a very delicate, sensitive, personal subject: Stepping Aside. What if the Founder isn’t the right person with the right skills to scale the business? (Odds are, they’re not) How do we get the Founder into their “zone of genius”? When & how should a Founder be “promoted” to Chairman, and a new CEO appointed? If it doesn’t happen, when & how should a VC & Board member make this very difficult decision? How do you separate the Founder (and their identity) from the business, which needs to have its own life & legs. While Mark Zuckerberg Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk went from Founder to CEO to Mega Industry Changer, that type of tenure is rare. (You can safely assume that you are none of those people.) So for you, the day will come when your business outgrows you. Your skills. Your passions. Or both. And then what? David is uniquely qualified to address this topic. Many startups …including those birthed by Techstars… go thru this transition. He’s sat on the Boards of countless companies who have successfully gone thru a transition from Founder to a new CEO. And last month, David - and Techstars Co-Founders David Brown, Brad Feld, Jared Polis - recruited a new CEO to lead Techstars next phase of growth. After evaluating 350 candidates, they selected Maëlle Gavet, an outstanding global business leader. She’ll build on Techstars’ heritage, which is pretty remarkable to consider: - Over 2,300 startups funded & launched - 85% of which have been acquired or are still active - Funding 500 companies per year - 8,000 mentors advise the 3 month program in 35 cities in 16 countries - The average company raises $1M - They’ve raised over $11B in total - Cumulative market valuation a $32B In this 20-minute conversation, David gets vulnerable & no-BS about how to make the most challenging people decision in the life of a company: When to Step Aside.

At Recur 2018, the Canadian five-time founder and “Chief Instigator” took us through the framework he uses to make webinars the number-one channel for customer acquisition at the companies he coaches. For Dan, webinars are the ultimate “high-leverage sales process.” Instead of demoing your product one-to-one to a prospect, you use webinars as a one-to-many presentation of your idea and your product. Dan's secret to this is twofold: You must produce content that converts. You must incorporate the turn. (If You Have any questions regarding Sales, You can ask me on Instagram - Sattyam03)

As destinations around the world begin to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, one thing is certain: they'll need to clearly and effectively communicate with their local communities. Residents may be hesitant to promote tourism to their region, and destination organizations may encounter challenges similar to those faced by destinations that are grappling with over tourism.

Sara founded Authentic Revolution, an organization spreading authentic relating toolkits (games, structures, ideas), to individuals, companies and groups. They also teach authentic leadership, which is a huge topic that we cover amidst coronavirus. She starts by sharing an authentic relating game with me, that we play together, that cuts straight into what we're both feeling. It was a vulnerable moment for me for sure. We then immediately go deep into why authenticity is important and powerful, why we lack it and what this lack does to our relationships. She shares a study about how authentic relating and emotional intelligence training on a Shell oil rig dropped the incidence of workplace accidents precipitously, and another about coal miners trapped in a mine and the unlikey emmergence of leadership. Through the episode, she invites me to share some of my own frameworks of thinking and my own thoughts on how her work relates to paragliding and the sports that I know and love. This was such a rewarding conversation for me, I'm still buzzing from it. I've only known Sara for a day, but I already can tell that she is a powerhouse lovebeam badass woman who is radiantly hellbent on helping all of us connect to each other more authentically. Bill Geist is the Chief Instigator at DMOproZ, a firm specializing in strategic planning, governance, marketing, and legislative issues for convention and visitor bureaus, tourism-focused chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and communities. Prior to forming DMOproZ, Bill served as the President/CEO of the Greater Madison (WI) Convention & Visitors Bureau. Bill is the author of Destination Leadership and a contributor to Fundamentals in Destination Marketing. He has provided consulting services to over 200 DMOs since 1995 and is a popular speaker on marketing trends and destination development across North America. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I speak with Bill about the shifting role of the DMO. Marketing is just the tip of the iceberg. DMOs have a larger leadership role to play in the economic fortunes of the communities they serve. It starts with an attitude of service, of giving back. What You Will Learn on this Episode: Why DMOs need to speak up on economic development issues in your communities The role of advocacy in DMO work What DMOs can do better than the internet Why understanding who you don’t appeal to is as important as understanding who you do appeal to Why storytelling is only going to become more important in the work of DMOs How to connect more with the community you serve as a DMO Destination Leadership Organizations Recently, we have begun discussing the expanding role that DMOs are playing and should play in their communities and now we’re thrilled to welcome a guest who has been promoting this conversation for a long time. Talk about great timing. Bill talks with us about the evolution of destination marketing over the past decades, and the need for destination leadership. He relates some stories of economic development missteps that could have been avoided if DMOs has raised their voice – but they thought it wasn’t their place. DMOs can be a critical conduit of information and stories that will help communities flourish and visitors fall in love and return again and again. This is a wonderful conversation on the leadership role DMOs can and should play. It’s Not About Heads in Beds Bill believes DMOs have often done a poor job of telling the story of their value to a community. At the end of the day, it’s not about heads in beds – what DMOs do is improve quality of life. They make their destination a better place to live. It comes down to communication. DMO directors would love to hear from you, and the community is waiting for leaders to sit down and talk about what’s happening, what they can promote and what stories they can tell on your behalf. It’s a two-way street, but Bill Geist is encouraging DMOs to take the lead!
