About the Show: On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Leo Orpin one of the founders of Black Apple Crossing in Downtown Springdale and Manuel Tejeda, the event coordinator. Leo is proud that Black Apple Crossing is the first Cidery in the Natural State. In a few short years, they have perfected the cider process and invoked some of the historical aspects of apple production in this region. Who knew that NWA used to be the epicenter of Apple producing in this part of the country. Leo and his partners at Black Apple Crossing are trying to revive the Apple Orchards of the Ozarks one Apple variety at a time. Black Apple Crossing is a great place to go and enjoy any of the varieties of Cider that they produce. You can also bring your Growlers or purchase cans of Cider to take home. You can purchase Black Apple Crossing Cider in local stores including Sam’s Club and Ozark Natural Foods, Whole Foods in and around NWA, and they are in more than 100 establishments between here and Little Rock. The sky is the limit for this Cidery and Leo, and his partners are putting NWA and the World on notice that they are here to stay! All of this and more on this episode of I am Northwest Arkansas. About the Show: On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Erin Tarver, Executive Director of BrightHaven Christian Learning Center. Erin has a passion for children and it shows. We learned all about her “Why,” for starting BrightHaven and why she opened up her facility in Springdale. In addition to running the show at BrightHaven, Erin is also an Early Childhood Development trainer and she takes her team through twice the recommended continuing education requirements called for by the state of Arkansas. BrightHaven is a 3-Star Early Childcare Facility and Erin is very proud of the efforts undertaken to maintain this level of quality and service not only to the parents and staff but most importantly to the Children. Erin walked us through the challenges faced by most Early Childcare providers in the State and she outlines what BrightHaven is doing to mitigate these issues. This episode was filled with a ton of “quotables,” from Erin but the one that stands out the most was when we started talking about her own children and the differences she sees in the youngest one who went through a strong early childhood education program starting at five months old versus her 14-year-old who started at BrightHaven in his last year of Pre School. “Brain research says that a child can grow up in a household filled with poverty. But, if they have strong relationships with their primary caregivers, these children can go on to achieve the highest levels of education and can be the thing that turns their family around. And so that is built on positive relationships with their primary caregivers.” That is just the tip of the iceberg. Erin shared so many great quotes and statistics about early childhood care and development. You don’t want to miss this episode. Erin works hard but also likes to have fun too. She enjoys Black Apple Crossing, MJ’s Pizza in Springdale, The Mother Ship in Springdale, to name a few. All of this and more on this episode of I am Northwest Arkansas. 52nd Episode! Released weekly, this means we've lasted an entire year on the air! Pop the champagne? Nah. We went with hard cider from our friends at Black Apple Crossing. This week we were joined by Spencer Jones with LineGard Med, and exciting company that was founded by Spencer under two years ago when he was working as a registered nurse. He saw problems with the status quo in the hospitals he worked in, and started down a road of creating medical devices. It's been over 400 days since he last scrubbed in, and he doesn't plan on turning back. Spencer is in the process of moving his company back to Fayetteville after participating in two accelerators, and working as the Entrepreneur in Residence at the HUBx LifeSciences Accelerator in Little Rock, AR. Our guest, Leo Orpin, has opened the first cidery in the state of Arkansas, located in the heart of Springdale. Leo was kind enough to bring some "prowlers" (the cidery's version of a growler) to share his delicious product, and he walks us through the cider making process, as well everything they leveraged to build a destination hang-out spot in Springdale. In this weeks episode, we say goodbye to co-host Jon Cadieux, who is moving on to bigger and better things. Thank you for all of your efforts in launching the podcast, it's been a fun ride, and we hope to see you for many beers to come.
