LUCAS COUNTY REVALUATION TURMOILKatie Moline | Lucas County AuditorLucas County Auditor Katie Moline is currently at the centerof a property revaluation issue that has caused concern among residents. The revaluation process, which adjusts property values for tax purposes, has led to significant increases in property assessments across the county, sparking public frustration. Recently, former Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez weighedin, expressing criticism of the handling of the situation. Lopez, who held the position before Moline, suggested that the current administration could have done more to mitigate the impact on homeowners and improve communication about the process. Her comments highlight the growing divide over how the revaluation was managed and its implications for local taxpayers.Moline has engaged the services of an independent thirdparty to conduct a review of the county's troubled property valuation processes. Ms. Moline says the precise scope of the third-party review was still being worked out and that the costs of such a review were, at this time, unknown. She added that the intention of the review is to look at “the glitch” that happened in 2024 and to determine best practices for future valuations in Lucas County. Ms. Moline reiterated that she is confident that her office has found the programming error that caused more than 1,400 properties to be incorrectly valued. The owners of those properties that were erroneously valued have now been notified. They should receive a new tax bill, and refunds are being processed for those who have already made a payment based on an inflated property value.

On the morning of August 21, 1996, Trudy Appleby, an 11-year-old girl from Moline, Illinois, missed her scheduled 9:00 AM phone call with her best friend. Thirty minutes later, Trudy was seen getting into a car, believed to be a Chevy Celebrity, with a white man in his twenties. She was never seen again.  Trudy's father came home during his lunch break and made lunch for Trudy, assuming she was out playing with friends. But when he returned at the end of the workday, the lunch was still on the table, untouched—and Trudy was nowhere to be found. A massive investigation was launched, and persons of interest were eventually identified, however, Trudy has never been located. It's been more than 28 years since Trudy vanished, and investigators are still searching for her... Trudy Appleby was last seen at around 9:30 AM on the morning of August 21, 1996, near her home located near 41st Street and 23rd Avenue in East Moline, Illinois. A witness reported seeing her getting into a gray or silver four-door Chevrolet Celebrity with a white man, now believed to be William “Ed” Smith.  At the time, Trudy was wearing a black one-piece swimsuit, spandex shorts, blue tennis shoes, socks, and a t-shirt. She was also carrying a beach towel. Law enforcement has named three persons of interest in the case: William “Ed” Smith, David Whipple, and Jamison “Jamie” Fisher. To date, no one has been charged in connection with Trudy's disappearance. Police believe they are just missing a few key details to solve the case. Anyone with information about Trudy Appleby's case is encouraged to contact the Moline Police Department at 309-534-2140 or Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities at 309-762-9500. December 18, 1979. Moline, Illinois. 30-year old Cody James and 30-year old Gary Harker leave Gary's woodcarving shop in Cody's pick-up truck in order to make a delivery and collect some money, but they never return and the truck is later found abandoned across the state line in Davenport, Iowa. Four months after the disappearances, the pick-up is sold off at a police auction, but the new owners are shocked to discover Cody and Gary's bodies concealed beneath some debris in the truck bed and it turns out both men have been bludgeoned to death. It is theorized that the crime was drug-related and even though photographs of two potential suspects are provided to investigators decades later, no one is ever charged with the murders. For our final holiday-themed episode of 2024, “The Trail Went Cold” chronicles a shocking double homicide which has remained unsolved for 45 years. Legendary Jazz drummer Louie Bellson has a few connections to Kewanee. First of all, his father, Louie Bellson Sr. owned a music shop in Kewanee in the 1930s and 40s. Also, Louie Bellson's little sister moved to Kewanee in the 1950s and spent the rest of her life in Kewanee. But the question that our friend Dave Clarke tried to answer on this edition of Kewanee Back When was whether or not Louie Bellson ever played a show in Kewanee? We know he played several shows in Rock Falls, where he was born, and in Moline where he grew up. But did he ever play a show in Kewanee? Dave has the answer in this edition of Kewanee Back When.

Put AI to work on your farm: https://farmwave.io/Paine Schwartz Partners: https://paineschwartz.com/Today's episode features Kevin Schwartz of Paine Schwartz Partners. This is a really interesting look at the food and ag industry from a totally different perspective. Kevin and his team are investors, but they're not trying to invest in early stage startups like a venture capitalist would, or into farmland like other investors might. They focus on companies that already have proven their product, but for one reason or another might be looking to sell or take on an investor. Paine Schwartz Partners focuses their investing in these companies into two general categories: productivity - which includes seed and other inputs and technologies that help farmers and ranchers produce more efficiently and profitably. You'll hear Kevin use the word “upstream” a lot, and he means upstream in the value chain, so these types of companies/products and services. Then their second area of investing is further downstream into more food companies, specifically those associated with health and wellness. I enjoyed the chance to ask Kevin about the evolution of private equity investing in food and agriculture and their approach from investment thesis development to research and due diligence to value creation strategy to portfolio construction. We also talk about the rise of environmental, social and governance ortherwise known as ESG and impact investing as well as how interest rates impact these companies and PSP's ability to carry out their strategies. A lot of interesting stuff here that I'm learning for the first time, so I love episodes like this. If you're an ag nerd but not a finance nerd, there might be a few terms that are foreign to you. I won't do a full glossary here, but I encourage you to pause and look them up if needed, but stay to the end, because I think there's some real insight in this episode.A quick bio on Kevin before we dive in: Kevin Schwartz has been an investor in the food and agribusiness industry for more than two decades. Today he leads Paine Schwartz Partners as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner. Raised in the town of Moline on the border of Illinois and Iowa, his great grandparents were subsistence farmers in Iowa and his grandfathe, uncle and father all worked at John Deere. Kevin began his career at Goldman Sachs in the late-1990s, and then moved into private equity working for two organizations, Fremont Partners and American Industrial Partners, before coming to the firm which at that time was called Fox-Paine in 2001.
