"Organizational justice is about ensuring that every individual feels they are treated fairly and with respect in all aspects of their work. It's not just about the outcomes they receive, but how those outcomes are decided and communicated. Fair processes and respectful treatment are fundamental to maintaining trust and equity within any organization." -Stephen Gilliland Summary: In this episode of "Psych Tech @ Work," Steven Gilliland, a distinguished professor and expert in organizational justice, joins me to explore the profound impact of fairness on hiring and the psychology of the workplace. Stephen was my professor when I was in grad school at LSU, so I know him well and was lucky to have exposure to organizational justice theory during my most formative years. After taking a stroll down memory lane, we have an amazing conversation about the fundamental principles of organizational justice theory. We discuss how perceptions of fairness in outcomes, processes, and interpersonal treatment shape employees' attitudes and behaviors. We talk about how organizations can ensure fair treatment during hiring and how these practices influence applicants' decisions and organizational reputation. We also dig into the broader implications of fairness in the workplace, emphasizing how companies can navigate challenging decisions, like layoffs, while maintaining their commitment to justice. Finally, we discuss the evolving role of technology in shaping justice perceptions in the workplace. Stephen provides insights into how AI and digital tools are transforming the landscape of organizational justice, offering both opportunities and challenges. Take Aways: Treat Applicants as Customers: Consider the hiring process from the applicant's perspective. Fair treatment during this phase can significantly impact their decision to join your organization and their perception of your brand. Understand the Role of Fairness in Employee Engagement: Perceptions of fairness in hiring and workplace practices contribute to overall employee engagement and satisfaction. Ensure that decisions and processes are consistently fair to foster a positive work environment. Adapt Organizational Justice to Technological Changes: As workplaces evolve with technological advancements, continuously revisit and adapt your organizational justice practices to address new challenges and maintain fairness. Respond to Difficult Situations with Empathy: During tough times, such as layoffs, how you handle the situation reveals your organization's commitment to fairness. Strive to treat affected individuals with empathy and respect, maintaining open and honest communication. Align Actions with Psychological Contracts: Be aware of the unspoken agreements between employees and employers. Violating these expectations can lead to perceptions of unfairness and affect employee loyalty and engagement. Future-Proof Your Fairness Practices: Stay ahead of emerging trends by integrating fairness into your organizational strategy. Anticipate the impact of new technologies and societal changes on your justice practices to create a resilient and equitable workplace. This is a more reflective episode. I wanted to share something I learned after listening to an interview during one of my financial classes. I'm not going to talk about finance but the psychology of pursuing a goal, passion, or desire. Mark Ritchie III mentioned a book I listed below about the psychology of trading. In the last chapter, they talk about the five capitals. He went in-depth with each one, and there was a massive correlation between this and a player's career in baseball. Enjoy this episode! We recently were at the PBR Nationals at Lake Point in Emerson, Georgia. We saw some unbelievable talent, but one obvious thing was the ballpark's attitudes. You could easily pick out the players who were unselfish and who were selfish. The unselfish players shined like rockstars. They were talking the game, they had positive body language, and you gravitated towards them as you watched them on the field. So, if two opposing coaches who don't have a horse in the race notice these positive vibes...how do you think college scouts and fans see you? DEEP Into the archives, I went to find this episode. I was editing last week trying to find a clip from the Closing Pitch and found this piece that read 'December- Recording 03.' After listening to it, I thought this was a great piece to send out for players to watch and listen on setting standards for yourself to live by. We site three situations. I hope you like the episode! Also, we mention NFT's (non-fungible tokens). It's not investment advice!!! We're baseball people, we help run a club, we're not financial professionals. One of my lesson clients, who I love coaching, by the way, came in frustrated. He was getting angry at his performance. It was the frustration you get when you're struggling to make an adjustment. You're learning from your mistakes, but you're not making the fast adjustment to fix them. I stopped the lesson to 'calm him down,' but to also figure out what was happening in his headspace. We found the route of it. This podcast is about our conversation. "Showcases are expensive!" "They're not worth it." "The top kids get all the looks." There's some truth to the rumors around showcases, but we all might be viewing them all wrong. We're back, we're here, and we've got stories to share! Dave and I recently went to a Perfect Game tournament in Arizona with our National Teams. PART 2 of the Deven Morgan interview is here! In this episode, we continue the conversation with emotional validation for youth athletes. One of the best topics we reached was the binary outcome of a game. The win and the loss need to be explained to the athlete. Kids are at a biological disadvantage because their brain is not fully formed, so they're not able to evaluate abstract thought. When we as coaches give only validation for wins and losses it puts an immediate impression on the player. We need to rethink what really matters. Is box score the ultimate tool for development guidance? Deven disagrees, it only gives you a map of the game. It doesn't show the hustle plays, leadership moments, or even scorching line drives that were caught. We need to rethink everything. 00:00-03:13 Introduction and Recap of Part 1 03:14-11:58 Emotional Intelligence, validation, and the youth athlete 11:58-20:57 Blending baseball data, skills of scale, progress, gamification, and emotional development 20:58-30:56 What is the goal because if you throw a rock you could probably hit a travel team 30:57-45:54 Throwing, weighted baseballs, gaining VELOCITY

And working in a team with very smart people, focusing on the quality of your communication to convey a message to an audience you have a limited time with, and being effective at using the information you have and at conveying it.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [8:23]On why he loves working art auctions: It is thrilling, exhilarating, to see the best of human creativity through the ages, and that's what I deal with on a daily basis. - Bruno Vinciguerra [9:08]On how one's production shouldn't define one's career: “I think depending on who you are, you can live in this business of big events that can be triumphs, or could be moderate successes. Or you can be in a world of perfection and optimization where you know what you deliver.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [11:37]On the shift away from longer plans and towards new, faster forms of development: “I see with my team developing a website; there is a concept of ‘sprints.' Six-week sprints, which is, they say, these small bites, these small projects. ‘Okay, what can we achieve in six weeks,' and it is completely different, and it's all the new programming.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [20:53]On how to keep up with changing trends: “To your question, the ultimate goal is to be flexible. To be able to get information as fast as possible, analyze it, and modify trajectory as fast as you can.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [25:22]On how difficult it is for new players to enter the art selling market: “This is not only a business about selling this is also a business about sourcing. And in the world of rarities, in the world of the exceptional, the success factor is having the best art to sell, or the best cars to sell, or the best jewelry to sell.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [26:48]The usual criteria for a collector to sell. “The four ‘D's', Death, Debt, Divorce, and Desperation.” - Bruno Vinciguerra [28:18]On why shifting to an online model of art auctions is working: “The secret of this industry is the following: you have 500, 600 people in an auction room during a great evening sale in the art world, maybe 5 people in the room are bidding. They are here for the entertainment, and the majority, the vast majority, I'm talking more than 90% of the bidders are either online, on the phone, or leave what we call an absentee bid, which means ‘buy it, to that level, for me.'” - Bruno Vinciguerra [35:50]People say ‘you know you're going to pay 0 for a copy of a Picasso, so why do you pay millions of dollars for the original painting,' and you say ‘Because it was painted by the hand of Picasso,' and there is a reality to the object. - Bruno Vinciguerra [43:31]Stay Connected:Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The SydcastBruno VinciguerraLinkedIn: Bruno VinciguerraSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. For me it's what makes life so interesting.” -Doug Conant [8:29]On how to navigate imperfect jobs early in one's career. “For me it's about growth, and it's not just my growth, it's growth and contribution to others. And so I'm always looking through the lens of growing and contributing in a more substantial way.” -Doug Conant [9:22]“As a CEO, you're crazy if you think you're going to know everything. So you've got to be able to have a collection of people that know a lot about the subject matter expertise and then you've got to be incredibly fluent at orchestrating to optimize your effectiveness at calling on all those talents.” -Doug Conant [10:24]On leadership as a learnable skill: “I view leadership in a mastery model, you've got to become a craftsman at it. You apprentice, you study, you learn, and most of the time you do it by the seat of your pants, let's be honest. But I think it's imperative that you really embrace the notion of being a brilliant leader to get the most out of people.” -Doug Conant [12:43]“It's hard to have courage if you're not clear on your convictions.” -Doug Conant [26:46]“You were an overnight success 25 years in the making.” -Syd Finkelstein [30:49]On the most important aspect of leadership “I find that my effectiveness, in every situation, improves if I'm a good listener. If I'm very attentive with it. I serve people better because I better understand their situation. They appreciate that I'm earnestly trying to hear them and we move forward in a way that's a higher order of effectiveness.” -Doug Conant [52:24]Stay Connected:Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The SydcastDoug ConantWebsite: https://conantleadership.comLinkedIn: Douglas ConantTwitter: @DougConantYoutube: Doug ConantSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify.
