Join us for a conversation with Andy Compton, an Asian American writer and director from St. Louis, Missouri. Once a hard-partying high school dropout, Andy found sobriety in his late 20s, graduated Cum Laude from Webster University, and sharpened his storytelling skills at The Improv Shop. Picture this: I, Bobby J Cox, am chronically late to my job at Sports Authority, a company now extinct. Listen to me recount the absolute chaos of my workdays and share a laugh with me about the random success of companies whose names are a cheeky nod to male genitalia. But it's not all fun and games—we'll also tackle the frustrating run-ins with technical difficulties during my recording sessions, and I'll share a war-inspired comedy sketch I've thought up. Next, let's switch gears to a more personal note. I open up about how the mundane task of working at a sports store was a surprising antidote for my anxiety. The criticism from my manager, my first encounter with weed, and how I learned to stand tall in the face of adversity—it's all a part of the narrative. And who knows, my reflections may inspire you to find your own "fuck off job" to ease the pressures of life. Finally, join me as I relive the thrill of hosting the Flyover Comedy Festival in St. Louis. You'll feel as if you were in the front row for the unforgettable performances by comedians Andrew Orloff and Luke Knoll. Plus, I'll let you in on my unique promotional stunts and why the Side Stage at the Improv Shop has become my favorite stage in St. Louis. So here's your ticket to a rollercoaster ride of laughter, personal growth, and a behind-the-scenes look at the comedy world. Buckle up!

Hello and welcome to the 33rd episode of It's the Journey! In this one I'm super honored to get to spend some time with my friend Kevin Mckernan, who is the Founder of The Improv Shop (an improv theater in St Louis, Missouri). Kevin is a kind, humble, smart, caring guy, and a super thoughtful, patient, and motivating teacher! His work and passion for this artform has impacted so many lives including my own! (I devoted 2 chapters to improv in AfterLIFE, Waking up from My American Dream.) In our time together, Kevin shared the story of how he ended up taking an improv class at St. Louis University High School and the butterfly effect from that resulted in him founding The Improv Shop in 2009, which has turned into a wonderful community of talented and amazing people who come together to laugh, learn, have fun, support, and love each other. There are lots of great lessons here that I know can be helpful to you on your journey. Thank you for listening. Please like and subscribe wherever you listen. Welcome back everyone and if you are new, thank you for joining! This week I'm trying something new. I created this quick, sort of, Prequel Episode, with Kevin McKernan who is the founder of The Improv Shop, a great friend, and a treasure of a human being. I asked Kevin a quick question with the hope he would share his wisdom on a topic I thought would be helpful to you and he did just that! Later this week I'll release an episode with our hour-ish long conversation about how he found improv, fell in love with it, and eventually began the theater that is a treasure for our city. If you read AfterLIFE, you'll know what an impact it had on me. If you've been listening to It's the Journey you'll have an idea of the wonderful people who are a part of this community. In this episode I mentioned a few past episodes with stories to reinforce the wisdom Kevin shared here: Episode 31 with Jodi Werner Episode 14 with Helen Petty and Episode 2 with Micah Johnson Check them out, listen, learn, grow, share, like, review, and most importantly: Say YES to you dreams and Enjoy Your Journey! AND please check out the site for The Improv Shop to see shows and sign up for classes! Their amazing teachers will make you feel so loved and supported, you'll have fun, you'll learn, grow, and meet some amazing, kind, and talented people. Welcome back for another episode of It's the Journey! If you are a first time listener, Welcome and thank you for joining me! You all are in for a treat and some wonderful lessons! My guest on this episode is Jodi Werner. I've known Jodi for just over 5 years. I met Jodi, like so many of my amazing friends, through improv. Over the years I've enjoyed seeing her skills grow as a chef, especially when she took on the responsibility of running the kitchen at The Improv Shop! It was so fun to see her take on that challenge and see her thrive as she continued to grow the menu and fine tune what the kitchen offered. It was always a treat to see her pop out of the kitchen to say "hi" and confirm her suspicions about who was at the shop based the orders that came through. And then it was always, always a joy to see Jodi up on stage. She's fearless, smart, and so, so funny! Then, as it did for all of us, Covid impacted Jodi's world when the theater had to close due to the global pandemic. In this episode, Jodi tells her story of turning a lemon into lemonade as she decided to use her talents to start her own business and help provide comfort to friends, family, and eventually a huge and growing list of customers by providing home cooked meals through her new company, Jodi's Kitchen! This is such a great story with so many wonderful lessons. And, there's a guest "appearance" from her talkative cat Siouxsie! Check out the Facebook Group for Jodi's Kitchen. It's a closed group but you are totally welcome join so you can order some of Jodi's amazing home cooked meals and enjoy some of her food that really does feel like a hug. Jodi has a big heart full of love and you can feel that in her craft of cooking! Thank you for listening and Thank you to Jodi for being an amazing human being! And as always, please say yes to Your Dreams, Follow the fun that is calling you, and Enjoy Your Journey! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carlopodcast/support
Welcome back to It's Journey and to part 2 with Andy Sloey! In this episode we dive in deeper to the world of improv. I listened to this again before posting it and am so excited to present this to you. If you love improv or have been curious about it listening to some of Andy's thoughts about the process are like sitting in on a Masters level class on the subject. Even if you don't perform, it'll help you gain an appreciation for the artform and may just inspire you to take a class! Below is the Intro from last week in case you jumped ahead! Listen to Episode 19 if you get a chance! Intro: Andy is a gem of a human being. He's a kind, caring, friend, a talented and insightful teacher and coach, a leader, partner, an amazing father to two awesome human beings (and some furry friends) and he's also an Amazing actor and improvisor. I learn from him every time I get to see him perform (and I've laughed until it hurts) and I've been lucky enough to have been in his classes and have him as an improv coach. AND I always love the great conversations he and I have had over the years in between shows in and around The Improv Shop. I was so grateful when he said yes to joining me to share one of those conversations on It's the Journey. We had so much fun diving into his personal journey and a host to of other topics that spiraled out of our mutual love of history, acting, improv, and so much more. We had so much fun and hit on so many topics that I decided to break this up into 2 episodes! Both of them are full of so many great topics. Please enjoy! If your looking for something fun to do I highly recommend taking some classes at The Improv Shop. The next round starts in June with an amazing line up of teachers who are some of my favorite human beings. Click here to learn more! Thank you so much. Please like, subscribe and share this with all your friends and as always, Enjoy Your Journey! Disclaimer: In our conversation, Andy and I ventured into ponderings about a possible connection between the black plague and syphilis. It was from a memory Andy had from a class. Andy and I are not Doctors or Scientists! Please do not use this information in any Trivia scenarios or Time Travel situations to the middle ages or Renaissance without doing your own research. Lance interviews Kunaal on his improvisational comedy years. This was memorable interview for Kunaal, since it brings up many memories both good and bad, that were formative for him in his ("eh kinda funny") comedy skills. There is a significant moment in the interview that we kept, wherein Kunaal pulls his shields down and truly becomes a bit more vulnerable and speaks volumes to what his experience with improv was for him both in college and afterwards. (Lance is a good interviewer!) Kunaal tells a story where he met SNL actress Kate McKinnon and the hilariously awkwardness that ensued. Correction--the Broad City Actress' name was Nicole Drespel not "Fetcho." Wanted to give a huge Shout out to the Improv Shop in St. Louis and all the respective teachers: Melanie Penn, Andy Sloey, John Langen, Katie Nunn, and Kevin McKernan. Also if you are at SLU check out the League of Laughter or LOL. Oh and dont worry, Yakuza is mentioned. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/they-need-a-hobby/support

Alexis is a funny person but she never writes any of it down. She just improvises a funny thing right out of thin air. This is actually the first episode of the podcast that wasn't written before hand. Neat! She's always doing stuff at the Improv Shop. Go see her do that sometime.

This show was recorded live at the main stage at The Improv Shop in St Louis, Missouri as part of the first annual Flyover Comedy Festival. We had amazing stories from Katherine Jessup, Mary Santora, Emily Galati, Henry Phillips, and Rob T. We had the 4 main hosts rotating on the couch. All of these stories are so good and all of them are so different. It's a really great episode.
Recorded live at The Heavy Anchor in September 2017. Jeremy and Kenny were joined on the couch by the hilarious Zack Stovall. Zack is a standup and sketch comedy person, who runs a cool show at The Improv Shop called Fancy Things. Telling stories, we have Andrew Mihalevich talking about shredding some sweet pow pow and hurting his dang leg. We have Ryan Dalton talking about being a stud QB and getting busted for saying a bad word. And last, we have Rob T talking about being a track star and throwing one of his races, with unexpected consequences.
Rafe and Steve talk to Carlo Sanfilippo about the ultimate Peeping Tom, dream interpretations, and the hellish landscape of hot Yoga classes. Along the way, they also discuss this episode's topic: Integral Theory. Integral theory is Philosopher, Ken Wilber's attempt to place a wide diversity of theories and thinkers into one single framework. It is portrayed as a "theory of everything" trying" to draw together an already existing number of separate paradigms into an interrelated network of approaches that are mutually enriching." Carlo is a comedic improviser on The Improv Shop house team, Scottie. He is also a Certified Financial Planner, Wealth Consultant, and President of Integral Wealth Planning. http://theimprovshop.com/teams/#scottie http://www.integralwealth.net More info on Ken Wilber: http://www.kenwilber.com/home/landing/index.html
