400+ Anti-LGBTQ Bills: Why Pride Matters More Than Ever | This Gay Week As Pride Month begins, LGBTQ people around the world are asking the same question: Are things getting better—or getting worse? This week on This Gay Week, Karel welcomes Scott Jacobsen of The Good Men Project for a wide-ranging conversation on the most important LGBTQ stories making headlines across the globe. Topics include:
Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has called for a review of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, citing procedural lapses during its passage on Friday
Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has insisted that Parliament validly passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025
Kwasi Addai Odike, Founder and Leader of the Union Government, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is following the same approach as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by avoiding a clear position on the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill. He argues that both parties are unwilling to take a firm stand on the issue
Ghana's President John Mahama has said the recently passed anti-LGBTQ+ bill will undergo a review by the Attorney General and legal advisers at the presidency before he decides to sign it into law. The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, was approved by parliament last Friday. The legislation proposes a three-year prison sentence for same-sex relations and up to five years imprisonment for promoting LGBTQ+ activities. The law has attracted mixed reaction within the country. This is not the first time Ghana has come up with such a proposal. A previous bill approved in 2024 recommended stricter punishment but was never signed into law. Also, we hear about a controversial multi-million dollar sports event allowing participating athletes to use performance enhancing drugs, usually banned in international competitions. Let's break down the contents of the recently passed Anti-LGBTQ Bill, examining its key provisions, restrictions, and proposed penalties. The conversation explores what the law says, how it is expected to be enforced, and the questions it raises about rights, governance, and public response. Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized the Anti-LGBTQI Bill, describing it as a “diluted document” with weak enforcement measures, just days after its passage
Legal practitioner Moses Foh-Amoaning has commented on the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, suggesting that President Mahama is following a similar path as a former president in handling the issue. He also raised concerns about aspects of the law, claiming that lawyers have been exempted from its provisions. His remarks have added to ongoing public debate surrounding the bill and its implications.
400+ Anti-LGBTQ Bills: Why Pride Month Still Matters Many people ask: “Why do we still need Pride Month?” After all, same-sex marriage is legal. LGBTQ people are visible in media, business, and politics. Haven't we won? The answer is no. As Pride Month begins, LGBTQ Americans—especially transgender youth—are facing the most significant legal and political backlash in decades. While marriage equality remains intact nationwide, the fight has shifted from expanding rights to defending them. More than 400 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced across dozens of states, while over 100 anti-trans laws have been enacted in recent years. From healthcare restrictions and sports bans to book censorship and attacks on legal recognition, the LGBTQ community is confronting a coordinated effort to roll back hard-won protections. In this episode, Karel examines:
Ebony Joseph concludes her three-part series on the global rise of anti-LGBTQ laws with a report from activists in Nigeria and Kenya confronting criminalization, censorship, and severe funding cuts. Organizers describe how anti-LGBTQ legislation affects housing, employment, healthcare, and online safety, while warning that many so-called “family protection” bills across Africa are linked to broader international networks of authoritarian politics and religious conservatism. Despite mounting political hostility, grassroots groups continue building coalitions, supporting vulnerable LGBTQ people, and fighting for dignity, equality, and belonging. In this week's Newswrap, a record-breaking boycott rocks the Eurovision Song Contest as protests over Israel's participation intensify amid the war in Gaza, while a new GLAAD report warns that major social media platforms are becoming increasingly unsafe for LGBTQ users. Additional stories include Japan's growing legal recognition of non-binary people, the delayed opening of a landmark African LGBTQ art exhibition in Washington, D.C., and the European Commission's decision not to pursue an EU-wide conversion therapy ban despite strong public support. In a Rainbow Rewind, poet Adrienne Rich reflects on responsibility to both past and future generations in a powerful archival excerpt. Featured speakers: Adrienne Rich, Ebony Joseph, JUSTIN CHIDOZIE, MOSES, CHEPKIRUI RONOH, GOODLUCK Credits: Associate Producer/Lucia Chappelle, Producer/Host Brian DeShazor, News writer Jeb Backe, feature producer Ebony Joseph, NewsWrap reporters, Ava Davis and Joe Boehnlein, music by Audra Day, Tom Petty and Kim Wilson
In part two of her series on the global rise of anti-LGBTQ laws, This Way Out's Ebony Joseph explores how criminalization and political hostility are creating a growing public health crisis for queer communities worldwide. Advocates say laws targeting LGBTQ people not only fuel stigma and violence, but also discourage people from seeking HIV prevention, mental health care, and other essential services. The report highlights countries where fear of arrest or public exposure keeps people from accessing clinics, while anti-LGBTQ rhetoric increasingly spreads from government policy into everyday life. The story also examines the impact of the Trump administration's cuts to U.S. foreign aid programs, including the dismantling of USAID and restrictions on funding tied to “gender ideology.” Former USAID officials and global health advocates warn that the loss of support for LGBTQ-focused HIV outreach programs could have devastating consequences, especially in countries where queer people already face criminalization. Despite growing hostility, organizers and activists continue building local networks of care and resistance, insisting that queer and trans lives deserve dignity, safety, and access to healthcare. NewsWrap: Botswana amends penal code removing anti-LGBTQ+ provisions which previously criminalized same-sex relationships, United States Trump Administration release 2026 Counterterrorism Strategy defining major terror groups including “violent secular political groups” with ideologies that are “anti-American, radically pro-transgender,” Zambian RightsCon is abruptly cancelled with officials claiming the event does not align with the country's “national values,” Pennsylvania legislators amend Pennsylvania Human Relations Act prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, Isaac Ranson, a transgender man, joins Minnesota Aurora FC soccer team as the first openly trans player, but must play with women's team because of his gender assigned at birth— and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by John Dyer the 5th and RET (News Writers Ebony Joseph and Jeb Backe, News Producer Brian DeShazor). In part one of a two-part series, This Way Out's Ebony Joseph examines a growing global wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation—from Africa to Eastern Europe and Central Asia—where governments are increasingly criminalizing queer identity under the guise of “morality,” “tradition,” or child protection. Featuring insights from Neela Goshal of Outright International, Gurchaten Sandhu of ILGA World, and Polish advocate Annamaria Linczowska, the report connects these laws to political power plays, colonial legacies, and rising authoritarianism, while highlighting their real-world consequences—from increased violence to the silencing of advocacy. Despite legal shifts in some regions, the piece underscores the ongoing struggle for safety, visibility, and basic rights, and the critical role of grassroots movements in pushing back. Featured speakers: Phil Thoman, Pope Leo XIV, Father James Martin, Steven Reigns, Ebony Joseph, Neela Goshal, Gurchaten Sandhu, Annamaria Linczowska In NewsWrap: Russia escalates its campaign against LGBTQ communities, as courts label advocacy groups “extremists,” a U.S. appeals court upholds West Virginia's ban on Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries, raising concerns about broader limits on transgender healthcare nationwide, transgender Idaho residents sue the state over what some are calling the harshest bathroom ban in the country, human rights groups issue travel warnings ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America citing risks for LGBTQ people and other marginalized communities, and Pope Leo XIV weighs in on same-sex marriage, emphasizing unity over doctrine as debate continues within the global Church—and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Joe Boehnlein and Tanya Kane-Parry (News Writer Ebony Joseph, News Producer Brian DeShazor). Is Trump's War on Iran Illegal? Gas Hikes, Culture Chaos & More The U.S. and Israel have launched major military strikes on Iran — and Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been confirmed dead in the conflict. What started as a limited strike has already escalated with Iranian retaliation and global tensions rising. Critics are calling this an illegal war, and analysts warn gas prices could spike sharply as oil markets react. President Trump is publicly touting the campaign as a ‘victory' — even suggesting Americans will sacrifice while his own family is spared from frontline risk. Meanwhile, everyday Americans are bracing for the real consequences: higher energy costs, economic instability, and the possibility of this conflict drawing out. But that's not all. Another mass shooting has renewed national debate over gun violence. Anti-LGBTQ legislation is advancing in New Hampshire, bringing civil rights tensions back into the spotlight. And Hollywood? LGBTQ+ journalist BJ Ferguson discusses the article, "Why physician voices matter in the fight against anti-LGBTQ+ laws." The conversation serves as a call to action for medical professionals, arguing that their duty to protect patient health now extends beyond the clinic and into the legislative arena. BJ outlines how anti-LGBTQ+ laws, particularly those targeting gender-affirming care, directly threaten patient well-being and undermine a physician's core commitment to do no harm. The discussion provides five clear, actionable steps for doctors to engage politically, from testifying at hearings and meeting with officials to using media and organizing their peers. Citing recent examples where physician testimony helped halt harmful legislation, this episode makes the powerful case that advocacy does not compromise medical ethics—it fulfills them. During a House hearing on USAID programs this week, Republican Representative Nancy Mace was so enraged about being called out over her use of an anti-LGBTQ slur that she decided to quadruple down on it and began shouting the slur repeatedly. Mace then became even more outraged when Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly asked if this violates the decorum rules, and she trashed him for being a man lecturing a woman. The whole thing was beyond insane.Donald Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt has not had a great start to her career, and she made it worse this week with a linguistic flub that left critics mocking her across social media. But in their haste to attack her over the flub, the critics missed the context of her remarks, which is what they should have been paying attention to because it was nothing but lies and deflection. Fox News announced this week that they are adding a new host to their weekend lineup: Lara Trump. The daughter-in-law of the president will be hosting a show on Saturdays going forward. Fox is officially a mouthpiece for the Trump administration.Donald Trump went completely bonkers after he fell for a thoroughly debunked right wing conspiracy this week, and he took to Truth Social to make the problem so much worse. Conservatives alleged this week that the USAID office had given $8 million to media outlet Politico, but that never actually happened. Texas' governor is spending millions & using anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric to defund public educationLGBTQ Nation, By Daniel Villarreal , on May 24, 2024https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2024/05/texas-governor-is-spending-millions-using-anti-lgbtq-rhetoric-to-defund-public-education/ In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott is promoting a school voucher program to redirect taxpayer funds to private schools, aiming to enhance parental choice. Abbott's push faces resistance, even within his own party. He argues parents should support vouchers to avoid LGBTQ+ teachers educating their children, despite past legislative failures. The program's supporters say it expands parental rights by financially supporting private school attendance. Critics claim it undermines public schools and worsens inequality. Abbott's campaign involves substantial financial backing for pro-voucher candidates, targeting GOP dissenters.Jason Friedman likens Abbott's campaign to a business operation aimed at consolidating power. Cindy traces the GOP's effort to weaken public education to the Reagan era, noting Texas ranks low in educational attainment. She argues Abbott's rhetoric is a distraction from real issues like underfunding.Kara discusses the social impact, arguing the fear of LGBTQ+ teachers is baseless and manipulative. The panel also suggests Abbott's campaign might lead to lawsuits against public schools over race and LGBTQ+ issues, potentially influencing Supreme Court rulings.Overall, the Texas voucher debate intertwines political maneuvering, financial interests, and ideological battles, with significant implications for education's future. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.23.1 featuring Scott Dickie, Kara Griffin, Cindy Plaza and Jason FriedmanBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Regina Kunzel, professor of history and women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University, to discuss her recent book In the Shadow of Diagnosis: Psychiatric Power and Queer Life. Then, she speaks with Beshara Doumani, professor of Palestinian studies at Brown University, to discuss the 76th anniversary of the Nakba. First, Emma runs through updates on South Africa's ICJ appeal to stop Israel's Rafah invasion, growing public dissent from Biden allies to his support of Israel's genocide, the US' detainment of an anti-zionist Israeli academic, Bob Menendez's genius legal tactic, the assassination attempt on Slovakia's Prime Minister, Trump's legal woes, Argentinian homophobic hate crimes, and Louisiana gerrymandering, before watching CNN try to save face on their coverage of the violence against student protesters. Professor Regina Kunzel then dives right into the history of the psychiatric industry, from its roots as a custodial care industry (asylums, etc) in the 19th Century, through its slow battle for professional legitimacy over the first half of the 1900s, exploring how this push for legitimacy saw the industry lay claim to a wide range of “problems in living” such as anxiety, depression, and (importantly) homosexuality and gender nonconformity. Expanding on this, Professor Kunzel tackles the presentation of queerness as a “treatable” mental disorder, one that would eventually be codified as a personality disorder (alongside pedophilia and sadism) with the introduction of the DSM in 1952, before stepping back to look at the role World War II, and more specifically the emphasis on mental health screenings, had in giving state-backed legitimacy to the psychiatric industry writ large, and in its particular pathologization of queer identity. After looking at the central role de-pathologizing homosexuality played in the gay rights movement of the 1970s, and the side-effect of gender “deviance” taking a back seat to homosexuality, Professor Kunzel wraps up with the re-emergence of the medical and psychiatric attack on queer identity with the mainstreaming of transphobic politics over the last decade. Professor Beshara Doumani then joins, walking through the 76 years of Palestinian oppression and ethnic cleansing since the 1948 Nakba, with the original event seeing the expulsion of over 80% of Palestinians from their homes, the end of the Palestinian state (and Palestinian society), and the creation of the State of Israel in the vacuum left by British colonial rule. Continuing the conversation, Professor Doumani contextualizes the central role the Nakba plays in Palestinian trauma and oppression to this day, exacerbated and brought to the fore with the following “earthquakes” of the 1967 Six-Day War, which saw hundreds of thousands more Palestinians ethnically cleansed, and the Oslo Accords complete isolation of Palestinians between the river and the sea. After diving deeper into the particular failure of the 2-state “solution,” Professor Doumani walks Emma through the specific repression he's faced as a Palestinian academic, and the tremendous increase it has seen in the wake of October 7th. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch British bigot Mike Graham boot Arab-Israeli Jew Avi Shlaim from his program for being honest about Israeli apartheid. Alec from Western New York explores the evolution of his perspective on anti-zionism, Mike in Denver on the second coming of meme-stock, and Bumble creator discusses the alienating future of AI-infused dating.
