Are you empowering others or unleashing agency? In this episode, Judith Katz and Fred Miller join Kevin to discuss the role of agency in the workplace. While autonomy and authority are often topics of discussion, agency — the ability for all individuals, regardless of their role or tenure, to possess power, influence, and a voice — is crucial for high-performance organizations. They explain how organizational cultures often "smother" this natural agency through excessive rules, approvals, and "checkers checking checkers," which leads to the slow implementation of even the best strategies. Judith and Fred highlight that organizations need to transition from control-based leadership to trust-based leadership. This week on Visual Intonation, we're sitting down with Dante Marshall, a self-taught photographer, director, and creative director whose work has captivated both brands and audiences alike. With a career that began almost a decade ago in Detroit, Dante's unique perspective on photography and storytelling has allowed him to build a distinctive style that resonates in the world of digital content and visual arts. His approach is rooted in authenticity, capturing moments as they unfold naturally rather than relying on perfectly posed shots. As we explore his journey from snapping photos of friends and family to working with international brands, Dante shares how his craft has evolved and the role his upbringing played in shaping his passion for photography. Dante's transition from Detroit to Los Angeles in 2013 marked a significant turning point in his career. In the fast-paced creative industry of LA, he found his footing by blending his photographic skills with a deep understanding of branding and visual storytelling. What started as a passion project turned into a full-time profession as he began to recognize the power of imagery in influencing modern culture. Through his work, Dante has learned to not only capture beautiful moments, but also to communicate messages that resonate with a new generation of consumers. We discuss how his services go beyond photography, extending into creative direction and video production, all while maintaining a consistent voice and message. Throughout our conversation, Dante opens up about his personal rituals that keep him grounded and productive. From his morning writing habit that sets the tone for his day to his love for music production through a midi keyboard, Dante emphasizes the importance of balance in maintaining his creative edge. He also shares his candid experience of a stolen camera bag during a campaign shoot, and how a solid backup strategy saved his entire portfolio—a crucial lesson for any creative professional. It's these thoughtful practices that help him remain focused, always learning, and continually refining his craft. Dante's work is about more than just creating visually striking images; it's about connecting with people and making them feel a part of the story. His ability to photograph people in their most natural, unguarded moments sets his work apart, and his philosophy of ‘curating potential' speaks to a deep understanding of how to build lasting connections with audiences. Join us as we explore his journey from taking photos of friends and family to shooting for global brands and artists. Dante talks about the creative tools that fuel his passion—whether it's his daily writing ritual, his MIDI keyboard for musical breaks, or the ever-present camera he uses to capture life's fleeting moments. We discuss how his style evolved, the power of storytelling through imagery, and how his family's unwavering support and accountability have shaped his approach to the craft. Tune in for an insightful conversation with Dante Marshall, and find out why success isn't just about what you make—it's about how you make people feel. Crafting Cozy Tales in the Natural State This week we are exploring the natural beauty and small-town charm of Arkansas with author, Tia Marlee. Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Roshi - ZMM - 7/27/24 - From the Book of Serenity, Case 5 - Qingyuan and the Price of Rice - As we seek to understand the Buddha's teachings on release from suffering, the explanations and descriptions of the Path are what we tend to seek. But when we actually sit down in zazen and experience our minds, without relying on explanations, the limits of conceptual thought begins to be seen. Bit by bit we learn to trust this direct experience, and trust it as the natural state, of our minds and of the minds of all beings.

The Arkansas Graveler is a supported bike tour across the state of Arkansas. It boast 366 miles and 26,700 feet of climbing over 6 days. The route takes you into parts unknown, showcasing some of the most remote rural roads that I've had the pleasure of riding. This inaugural year attracted 300+ riders from 35 states. It's clear that the word about Arkansas is spreading and cyclists are traveling far and wide to get a taste of the seemingly unlimited gravel roads that showcase why Arkansas is called “The Natural State”. The Arkansas Graveler, not content to offer riders a beautiful route and scenery, offered a host of off bike activities each afternoon, like archery, zip-lining, fly fishing, skeet shooting, cave tours, and the list goes on. Riders were well fed each morning and evening by Chef Biju Thomas and his team. Our bikes were maintained by Phat Tire bike shop. There were medics on site each day to attend to boo-boos and heat related illness. And we were treated to local musicians each evening with curated music that highlighted the region we were in. In other words, this isn't your average bike tour. The Arkansas Graveler created a traveling bike festival that followed, supported, healed, and entertained, 300+ riders as we traversed the great state. After riding across the state I assembled a small panel of participants to share their experience on the Arkansas Graveler. Our esteemed panel features: Philip Alderfer, Bobby Finster, Hilary Lex, and Scotti Moody (race director). Please join us on this weeks episode as we relive the highs and lows of this inaugural event. EPISODE SPONSORS Today's episode is provided ad-free thanks to support from Arkansas, The Natural State.
