Send us a Text Message. In this episode I catch up with Bob Wyatt who tells me about his recent fishing trips to New Zealand and the rivers he fishes near his home in Scotland. We look at the changing fishing landscape in New Zealand along with the impact of tourism on local rivers, and the decline in water quality due to industrial dairy farming. Bob also talks about his recent project of fishing with streamers and the success he has had with large brown trout on rivers and lakes. We reflect on the success of his fly pattern, the Deer Hair Emerger, and the creativity and collaboration that goes into fly tying. We discuss the importance of essential triggers in fly fishing and the techniques developed through experimentation and observation of trout behaviour. Bob also touches on the challenges of salmon farming and the efforts to protect wild salmon populations. He mentions his books, 'Trout Hunting' and 'What Trout Want,' and recommends the song 'Boulder to Birmingham' by Emmylou Harris for the Fly Culture Road Trip Mix playlist. As ever, Bob never disappoints and this episode is a great insight into his fishing life.

Bob Wyatt is the man behind the Deer Hair Emerger fly, the books Trout Hunting and What Trout Want and has written a number of articles in magazines too.He has lived and fished in Canada, Scotland and New Zealand where he has had the chance to observe the behaviour of trout especially with a dry fly. While researching this podcast I realised that as someone who has read both books that he has had a huge impact on my approach to fly fishing.
This week, we're continuing our Trailblazer episodes with Vincent Virga—author of the Gaywyck trilogy, the first m/m gothic romance, and one of the first m/m romances ending with a happily ever after. He talks about writing gay romance and about the way reading about love and happiness change readers lives. He also shares rich, wonderful stories about his vibrant life as a picture editor in publishing, about the literary set in New York City in the 70s and 80s, about writing during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, about the times in a writer's life when the words don't come easily, and about the times when they can't be stopped. We are honored and so grateful that Vincent took the time to speak with us, and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. This week my guest is Henry Cowen [@49:05], author of the new book Fly-Fishing for Freshwater Striped Bass, which is really a complete guide to chasing these great gamefish. They get huge, they often feed in shallow water, and are just about the perfect fish to chase with a fly rod. You'll learn their seasons, how to present your fly, and what tackle and flies you'll need to chase them. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions from listeners, including: How do newer Orvis rods compare to older ones like the All-Rounder? Any tips for casting from a kayak? How do the Orvis Hydros and Pro lines compare? Their tapers look very different What do you think of Bob Wyatt's philosophy on trout in the book What Trout Want? What direction should I cast when fishing streams? Can all bead head patterns be tied with tungsten beads? Why are my head cements too thick? When looking for a new river to fish, what structure should I look for? A tip from a listener that sometimes beaver activity seems to attract trout. Does it matter which direction I twist my dubbing? How will the 17-year cicada affect fishing? Can I tie a piece of tippet to the main tippet above my lower fly with a clinch knot? Why do people always tie their heavier nymph on as the lower fly? I have better luck tying the heavier nymph above my smaller fly. Can I use the Palomar Knot to add a second fly above my lower fly without removing the lower fly?
