We get an update on the AL Central from Mike Schaefer, our resident Guardians fan. An Australian Rules punter is in Lincoln, was Nebraska Baseball's season a success, and an out of nowhere David Krumholtz reference from one of our favorite guests.
Tough. Innovative. Pragmatic with a soft side. Those are some of the words an emotional Paul Roos used to describe Australian Rules titan Robert Walls after the passing of the 74-year-old. Walls won four premierships as a player and coach with Carlton and his influence spread well beyond the navy blues. Roos reflects on Walls' legacy and recollects his farewell to the man who coached him at Fitzroy. Featured: Paul Roos, AFL premiership coach.Subscribe to the ABC Sport Newsletter

With special guest: Stuart Coupe… in conversation with Bill Kable Paul Kelly is woven into the fabric of Australia. But it was not always so, as our guest today Stuart Coupe tells us. After first picking up a guitar at the age of 18 and writing his first song at 20, it did take a while and a number of rejections before Paul Kelly was accepted as a performer. In his book called Paul Kelly: the man, the music and the life in between, Stuart shows that he knows his subject well; so well that he can add this book to the canon on Paul Kelly’s life which already includes Paul Kelly’s lengthy autobiography. It is exciting to delve into the good and the bad parts of Paul Kelly’s life. From a big and loving secure family, who were motivated on the big issues of the day, Paul has emerged on the national scene. He is our storyteller but he could also have been one of our favourite sportsmen if things had turned out differently. Paul showed a lot of ability in cricket, Australian Rules football and also tennis. All that Australian sporting life as well as a taste of University and hard manual labour has informed what he can tell us about ourselves. Podcast (mp3)
This week Brian and Harrison kick things off with some general chatter; BT walks us through a couple of the projects he has going on at home, he shares a kidney stone story (which combines with a story of poor parenting) and Brian also shares 'the hardest thing he has ever done'. Next, the boys are joined by Australian Rules football legend and one of the most celebrated players in the game, Simon Black. 3x AFL Premierships, a Brownlow, a Norm Smith and countless other 'trinkets', there's next to nothing he hasn't done in the game. Put simply, this man of one of the greats, not just as an athlete but more so as a a man. He's humble, hardworking and was gifted with incredible skill. Always the loyal team man, he valued group achievements over the many individual accolades he received. Simon is a client of NC Management (Harrison's work), so the boys know Simon well and were able to squeeze some of the best juice out of this conversation. Hope you enjoy! There's something captivating about hearing directly from the visionaries who build successful companies from scratch; exploring their challenges and triumphs, and truly seeing the journey from start to success from someone who has lived it. These stories, their inspiration and the opportunities they have created for so many are what makes me so deeply passionate about the Direct Selling industry. Working with so many diverse companies and cultures has shown me just how much impact each organisation can have. But there's nothing more inspiring than hearing directly from a founder with a dream, a vision, and a mission to change lives. Today, we dive into the remarkable journey of Phil Hobby, the founder of Le Reve—a company that's close to my heart and has an incredible story to tell. Le Reve was one of the first companies I had the privilege of working with, and to this day, I am continually impressed by their commitment to their people and their story. Phil is not just a leader but a father of six, a grandfather to twenty, a board member of the Direct Selling Association, and a certified facilitator of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. His journey is one of grit, passion, and unwavering determination to make a difference. Phil joins us in this episode to share his journey from the ground up in building Le Reve. You'll hear about the challenges he faced, the pivotal moments that defined the company's direction, and the values that continue to shape its success today. We explore the sacrifices and triumphs behind a thriving brand. Phil's openness about the hurdles he faced—and what fueled his determination to overcome them offers incredible inspiration and encouragement to push forward with your own dreams. Whether you're an entrepreneur starting out or someone seeking inspiration, this conversation is for you. Claudia Hollingsworth is the kind of person who would excel at anything she put her mind to. The 19-year-old Australian is already an Olympic semi-finalist, World Under-20 silver medallist and Australian Champion in the 800m, and she's just getting started. In this conversation, we delve into Claudia's incredible year, what it's like to train with On Athletics Club Oceania, and how she's ready to go all in as a professional athlete (with uni studies on the side). You'll also hear a few quirky facts about Claudia's passions off the track (hint: pinecones and dead bugs). Claudia first captured attention at primary school when she was selected for the Pacific School Games and competed at the National Primary Schools Cross Country. But it was when world 5000m bronze medallist Craig Mottram became her coach that her track-and-field career really started to gain momentum. While still at high school, she earned selection for the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon. This year in a highly competitive 800m field at the Paris Olympics, Claudia wowed the world with a mature, clinical and confident run that saw her come 2nd in her heat and sail straight through to the semi-finals. Sport has always been part of Claudia's DNA, having been an avid Australian Rules football player with the East Brighton Vampires and the Sandringham Dragons. Although she considered applying to the AFL Women's draft, ultimately track and field won her heart. -- Claudia's instagram: @claudiahollingsworth_ Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Superlatives in the sporting arena are overused, often premature and sometimes unwarranted, but you can't say that about those profiled in two new books from authors Andrew Clarke and Gordon Bray. Immortal is not a word to be used lightly, and Andrew and Gordon have gone to great lengths to ensure there is no doubt everyone in their books is befitting of such a revered title. Andrew anoints eighteen Australian Rules players and Gordon fifteen of Rugby's elite to the status of Immortal. Rapid Fire topics include: * Irish special teams coordinator Marty Biagi went down under and signed 23-year-old Australian Rules football player James Rendell to be the Irish punter this season. We share our thoughts on the Irish going this route as opposed to the transfer portal. * The transfer portal came and went this week, and all four Notre Dame quarterbacks are still on the roster. On a scale of 1 to 10...How surprised are we that they're all still here? * An Indianapolis Star writer is catching a lot of grief for writing a column this week saying Caitlin Clark could do for the WNBA what Larry Bird did for the NBA. Do you Buy or Sell the idea that Clark could be her league's Bird? * Fill-in the blank…It's BLANK that the University of Houston plans to wear powder blue uniforms that are very similar to the ones worn by the defunct Houston Oilers. They wore them in their season opener last year, and the NFL threatened to sue them because the league said they were “blatantly copying” the Oilers' uniforms. * What's the best landing spot for the Inside The NBA studio crew of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith if TNT loses the NBA broadcasting rights? * Mike Trout is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury but it's barely a blip on the sports radar. Brendan Gale became CEO of Richmond in late 2009, and delivered this speech to the whole of the football club in the rooms in the old Punt Road grandstand in early 2010. it was a vision for the future, and it was mocked in the press at the time. Richmond had not won a final for 30 years and had competed in finals twice in the previous fifteen. Gale outlined a plan to win three premierships in ten years. It's an articulate corporate speech in a sporting environment with brave goal setting.
