On March 4th, 2025, one man set off from Istanbul, Turkey with an extraordinary goal — to walk more than 6,000 kilometres all the way home to Claremorris in County Mayo… completely barefoot. Eamonn Keaveney has already smashed the existing world record for the longest barefoot journey and is now making his way across Ireland, raising funds for Jigsaw and Friends of the Earth along the way. In May 1986, a new airport opened in Knock in the west of Ireland. It was the dream of an Irish priest, Monsignor James Horan, who raised millions to have it built. The location for the airport seemed impossible – set in the boggy, foggy hills of rural County Mayo. However, Knock attracts more than a million pilgrims every year, who come to visit the supposed site of an apparition by the Virgin Mary and other saints. So, Horan convinced politicians that this remote western landscape could host a gateway to the world, and service the pilgrims who come to visit the shrine of Knock. Pearce Concannon was working at the local Knock Shrine when the airport opened and remembers when Horan asked him to quit his job and become a firefighter at his new airport. He speaks to Colm Flynn. Vodafone Ireland has recently marked the first anniversary of Ireland's inaugural telecom Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), celebrating a major milestone in its sustainability journey. In partnership with Flogas and the Derrynadivva Wind Farm in County Mayo, the long-term PPA has delivered 13.4GWh of renewable electricity in its first year - enough to power over 5.3 billion 5-minute phone calls. Vodafone Ireland became the first telco in the country to directly procure renewable electricity through a PPA in 2024. One year on, it remains the only live telecom PPA in Ireland, continuing to serve as a proof point for how businesses can accelerate Ireland's renewable energy transition This achievement is part of Vodafone Ireland's wider decarbonisation programme as it works towards net-zero operations (Scope 1 & 2) by 2028. Vodafone Ireland is on track to achieve a fully electric fleet by 2027, with all current vehicles hybrid or electric since the end of 2024. In 2025, Vodafone Ireland achieved its goal of sending 100% of network waste for recycling, ensuring responsible processing and recovery of materials. All retail stores have been upgraded to LED lighting, reducing lighting energy usage, and Vodafone Ireland's Trade-In programme has collected more than 60,000 devices since launch in 2022, extending product lifecycles through resale and reducing e-waste. Vodafone Ireland is also taking steps to reduce its operational footprint through plans to relocate its headquarters to a modern, more energy efficient building at 70 St Stephen's Green in Dublin to further reduce its carbon footprint and support the company's ambitious net-zero goals. The agreement with Flogas highlights the potential for cross-sector collaboration in driving Ireland's renewable energy ambitions. Over the past year, Ireland's corporate PPA market has gained significant momentum, with companies across healthcare, manufacturing and retail now signing similar agreements. Speaking on the agreement, Elizabeth Headon, Vodafone Ireland's External Affairs Director, said: "Since 2018, Vodafone Ireland's energy consumption has held level, despite a five-fold increase in data traffic. Through an ongoing focus on network management and innovation, we have been able to decouple energy use from data growth. Signing Ireland's first telecom PPA a year ago was the logical step in Vodafone's contribution to energy transition, and we are proud to champion Irish renewable generation, invest in cleaner operations, and show tangible progress towards achieving net zero." From renewable energy partnerships and electric vehicles to circular device recovery and waste elimination, Vodafone Ireland is demonstrating practical, measurable action towards a low-carbon future. Vodafone Ireland remains on track to achieve net-zero operations (Scope 1 &2) by 2028, contributing to Ireland's wider 2030 renewable energy goals. A spokesperson for Flogas commented on the strategic value of the collaboration: "Our partnership with Vodafone showed that corporate PPAs can deliver tangible progress for both industry and Ireland's renewable energy sector. This agreement provided stability for a wind project and gave confidence to the wider market that large corporates can be an integral part of the energy transition." Pat Brett, Director of Derrynadivva Wind Farm, highlighted the strong local impact of the initiative: "Vodafone's long-term commitment has supported local investment, sustained jobs, and ensured renewable power from County Mayo is contributing directly to Ireland's national grid." Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 21, is the Memorial Day of Pope Pius X, an intrepid defender of the purity of the Christian doctrine, and also the anniversary of Our Lady of Knock.The Holy Virgin appeared on August 21, 1879, with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, a Lamb and cross on an altar in a parish church of the village of Knock, in County Mayo, in Ireland.Fifteen people witnessed the Blessed Virgin Mary standing in the middle, clothed in white garments, wearing a brilliant crown, with a golden rose over her forehead (A golden rose is often the symbol of this Marian apparition).Her hands were raised as if in prayer. All knew that it was Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Queen of Angels and Saints.On the right of Our Lady stood St. Joseph, his head inclined toward her. On her left stood St. John the Evangelist, dressed as a bishop.To the left of St. John stood an altar that had a lamb and a cross surrounded by angels.The vision lasted about two hours. Parking fines should be issued in the same way as penalty points, according to the Irish Parking Association. The suggestion comes as Castlebar in County Mayo looks set to completely ban clamps in the town. The local municipal council has fully backed the proposal to outlaw the clamping of vehicles. The IPA agrees clamping is often ineffective and says fines are a better deterrent to illegal parking. Director Keith Gavin, says current laws don't allow parking operators to pursue unpaid fines, but there is a simple way to change that. A major international citizen science project, with contributions from University of Galway, has revealed that streetlights are far from the only source of light pollution affecting our night skies. The study, published in Nature Cities, challenges the common assumption that streetlights are the primary contributor to urban light pollution and indicates that residential, commercial, and other non-street lighting sources play a significant role in brightening our night skies. The challenges of night-time light Many of these sources remain on well after midnight, creating unnecessary light spill and contributing significantly to night-time skyglow and its environmental impacts. More than 250 citizen scientists, mostly located in Germany, used a mobile app called Nachtlichter ('Nightlights') to examine over 230,000 individual light sources during 3,868 night-time surveys. The study was led by Christopher Kyba, former geographer at Ruhr University Bochum and the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, who said: "Both energy and lighting policy as well as research on the effects of artificial light on the environment have generally focused on street lighting. Our findings indicate that a broader approach that considers all lighting is necessary in order to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of light in cities." The research has direct relevance for Ireland, where there is currently no national legislation or policy to mitigate light pollution. With the EU requiring member states to address light pollution through Nature Restoration Action Plans, these insights offer valuable direction for future policy. University of Galway researcher with the School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies, Georgia MacMillan contributed to the study by coordinating surveys in multiple Irish locations around counties, such as Mayo and Galway, including the University of Galway campus. Georgia MacMillan said: "Using the NightLights application to conduct pilot surveys for this project helped us to consider the different sources of light pollution. This is something we need to do on a larger scale in Ireland and we hope to use the application for future studies in collaboration with other Irish University campuses and community groups." A Research Ireland Employment-based PhD Scholar, MacMillan is examining the role of dark sky tourism and community engagement in addressing light pollution, supervised by Dr Thérèse Conway and Professor Marie Mahon from the University's School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies. Dr Thérèse Conway said: "Through her role, Georgia has been instrumental in the successful bid by Dark Sky Ireland to host the Artificial Light at Night Conference (ALAN), which will take place in County Mayo later this year. It is the first time that Ireland will host this leading interdisciplinary event which will be attended by global specialists in light pollution and dark sky preservation such as Dr Christopher Kyba, lead author of the Nature Cities paper." This week's topic, coinciding with St. Patrick's Day, is Grace O'Malley.  O'Malley controlled a large portion of County Mayo in the late 1500s and was known as a pirate queen.  She famously met on equal terms with Queen Elizabeth I, and received her protection from Richard Bingham, the English lord nominally put in charge of the province of Connacht.

Ninety one year old Bill Reilly was a retired builder and a popular resident on the Tower Gardens Estate in Tottenham having lived there with his family there since 1977, although he was not originally a Londoner. In fact, Bill was born in Balla in County Mayo as part of a large family. A builder by trade, he had a strong work ethic and despite the manual nature of his job, he continued working right up until the age of 78. SO just who would have wanted to kill Bill?
