Join Alex and film studies professor Daniel Kieckhefer as they explore the deeper meaning in Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Vertigo (1958). The film stars James Stewart as a boyish former SFPD detective, haunted by a near-death experience that leaves him with extreme vertigo. He's called on as a private detective to investigate a woman, played by Kim Novak, who is seemingly possessed by a dead relative. This paper-thin mystery (as the critics at the time called it) is not what Hitchcock wanted audiences to pay attention to, however; as Daniel explains, this is classic Freudian Oedipal complex. The duo explore the explanation from a historical lens, both from a filmmaking and a clinical psychology perspective. It's pretty clear that obsession is the concept to focus on, but its really what the true object of that obsession that is up for debate! There was agreement that Stewart played a really creepy dude and in no way was he the good guy of this story. EPISODE 112 - “CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH: JACQUELINE WHITE” - 11/03/25 When we think of our beloved Classic film stars who are still with us, we tend to think of EVA MARIE SAINT, ANN BLYTH, KIM NOVAK, ROBERT WAGNOR, or DICK VAN DYKE, however, there is one star among us who will be turning 103 in November. The name JACQUELINE WHITE may not ring any bells today, but for a brief time in the 1940s, she was a beautiful, talented leading lady with much promise. In fact, when she was up for the lead role of the mother in the 1946 film The Yearling, she was told by the producers that she was too beautiful to portray the simple pioneer woman. The role went to JANE WYMAN, who probably would have been none-too-pleased to know that, apparently, she was just fine playing such a plain and simple woman! Na rdeči preprogi so se že zvrstila prva zvezdniška imena iz sveta filma: Julia Roberts, Emma Stone, Cate Blanchett, Francis Ford Coppola in Werner Herzog, ki je na odprtju iz njegovih rok prejel nagrado za življenjsko delo. To so podelili tudi ameriški igralki Kim Novak.
