He wanted to learn from their mistakes so as not to repeat them.—Elon announces that he wants to start his own rocket company and I do remember a lot of chuckling, some laughter, people saying things like, ‘Save your money kid, and go sit on the beach.'” The kid was not amused. If anything, the doubts expressed at this meeting, and by some of his confidants, energized him more.—Musk was a siren, calling brilliant young minds to SpaceX with an irresistible song. He offered an intoxicating brew of vision, charisma, audacious goals, resources.—When they needed something, he wrote the check. In meetings, he helped solve their most challenging technical problems. When the hour was late, he could often be found right there, beside them, working away.—The iterative approach begins with a goal and almost immediately leaps into concept designs, bench tests, and prototypes. The mantra with this approach is build and test early, find failures, and adapt. This is what SpaceX engineers and technicians did.—"Here was a man who was not interested in experts. He meets me, he thinks to himself, 'Here is a bright kid, let's employ him.' And he does. He risks little with the possibility of gaining much. It is *exactly* what I now do at DysonThis attitude to employment extended to [Jeremy] Fry's thinking in everything, including engineering. He did not, when an idea came to him, sit down and process it through pages of calculations; *he didn't argue it through with anyone; he just went out and built it.* When I came to him to say, 'I've had an idea,' he would offer no more advice than to say, 'You know where the workshop is, go and do it.'  'But we'll need to weld this thing,' I would protest.Well then, get a welder and weld it.' When I asked if we shouldn't talk to sure someone about, say, hydrodynamics, he would say, 'The lake is down there, the Land Rover is over there, take a plank of wood down to the lake, tow it behind a boat and look at what happens.' Now, this was not a modus operandi that I had encountered before. College had taught me to revere experts and expertise. Fry ridiculed all that; as far as he was concerned, *with enthusiasm and intelligence anything was possible.* It was mind-blowing. No research, no preliminary sketches. If it didn't work one way he would just try it another way, until it did. And as we proceeded I could see that we were getting on extremely quickly.  *The root principle was to do things your way.* It didn't matter how other people did it. It didn't matter if it could be done better.  As long as it works, and it is exciting, people will follow you."      — Against the Odds: An Autobiography by James Dyson by James Dyson (Founders #300)—Elon personally interviewed the first 3,000 employees of SpaceX.—His people had to be brilliant. They had to be hardworking. And there could be no nonsense.—SpaceX operated at its own speed.—Pony Express ad: “Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.”—I've never met a man so laser focused on his vision for what he wanted. He's very intense, and he's intimidating as hell.—SpaceX had juice with the best students in space engineering. The freedom to innovate and resources to go fast summoned the best engineers in the land.—Talent wins over experience and an entrepreneurial culture over heritage.—He always made the most difficult decisions. He did not put off problems, but rather tackled the hardest ones first. And he had a vision for how aerospace could be done faster and for less money.—He didn't want to fail, but he wasn't afraid of it.—The speed SpaceX worked at relative to its peers could be jarring.—No job is beneath us.—No committees. No reports. Just done.—Most of all he channeled an intense force to move things forward. Elon wants to get shit done.—SpaceX likes to operate on its own terms and its own timeline.—90% of the book is SpaceX failing.—Elon spent much of the flight poring over books written about early rocket scientists and their efforts. He seemed intent to understand the mistakes they had made and learn from them.—SpaceX is in this for the long haul and, come hell or high water, we are going to make this work.—Who knows your customers? Find the person that knows your customers and then hire that person to sell your product to them.—No work about work, just work. Shotwell wrote a plan of action for sales. Musk took one look at it and told her that he did not care about plans. Just get on with the job. “I was like, oh, OK, this is refreshing. I don't have to write up a damn plan,” Shotwell recalled. Here was her first real taste of Musk's management style. Don't talk about doing things, just do things.—Within its first three years, SpaceX had sued three of its biggest rivals in the launch industry, gone against the Air Force with the proposed United Launch Alliance merger, and protested a NASA contract. Elon Musk was not walking on eggshells on the way to orbit. He was breaking a lot of eggs.—A Pegasus launch cost between $ 26 and $ 28 million. SpaceX's price was $6 million. Musk wanted it front and center on the company's website. This sort of transparency was radical at the time.----“I have listened to every episode released and look forward to every episode that comes out. The only criticism I would have is that after each podcast I usually want to buy the book because I am interested so my poor wallet suffers. ” — GarethBe like Gareth. SpaceX Ignites Super Heavy Rocket's 33 Engines for the First Time

SpaceX, the leading private aerospace company, is taking a big step towards space exploration with its Super Heavy rocket booster. The company's first stage of the starship rocket is fully reusable, which is aimed to power NASA's return to the Moon and help humans settle on Mars one day. With 33 main engines, this is the first time in history that so many engines have been used on a rocket. The closest comparison to this is the Soviet Union's N1 rocket, which had 30 liquid-fueled engines, but each of them was only about two-thirds as powerful as the Raptor 2 engines used on the Super Heavy rocket. The Super Heavy rocket is a crucial component of SpaceX's starship program, and its successful ignition of all 33 engines marks a significant milestone for the company. Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, spoke at a commercial space conference in Washington, DC and stated that Thursday (the day of the engine ignition test) was going to be a "big day" for the company. Despite the significance of the moment, Shotwell emphasized that the test was just the first step and the real goal was not to "blow up the launch pad". SpaceX's Starship program has been in development for several years, and after rapid-fire prototype tests in 2020 and 2021, the company has moved more cautiously with its testing at the Starbase facility in South Texas. The company has likely invested over $1 billion in building a massive launch-and-catch tower, as well as ground systems, to support the Super Heavy and Starship vehicles. With so many assets in one small area near the Gulf of Mexico, SpaceX is taking extra care not to risk destroying any infrastructure it has spent over a year building and testing. In the event of any destruction, the starship launch campaign would be set back for months, and regulatory concerns raised by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would likely increase. Thus, the primary goal of the engine ignition test was to not blow up the launch pad, and after that, SpaceX would analyze the performance of the Raptor engines and replace any that show deviations from expected behavior. The engine ignition test took place at around 3:15 pm local time in South Texas, and lasted for a "full duration" of the Raptor engines. According to SpaceX founder Elon Musk, one engine was turned off just prior to ignition, and another stopped itself, but 31 of the 33 engines would have provided enough thrust to reach orbit. Despite this, the launch infrastructure in South Texas remained mostly unscathed. This successful engine ignition test could lead to SpaceX's first orbital launch attempt, which is expected to occur in the second half of March or early April. The thrust output of the Super Heavy's engines was likely nearly double that of NASA's Saturn 5 rocket or Space Launch System, which is a huge achievement for SpaceX. Reusable Rockets: The Future of Space Exploration SpaceX's Super Heavy rocket booster is designed to be fully reusable, which is a major shift in the traditional aerospace industry. In the past, most rockets were used only once and then discarded after their mission was complete. This was because it was deemed too expensive and time-consuming to recover and refurbish the rockets for reuse. However, SpaceX has taken a different approach and is working towards a future where reusable rockets are the norm. Reusable rockets have several benefits. For starters, they significantly reduce the cost of launching into space. This is because the same rocket can be used repeatedly, reducing the need to build and launch new rockets for each mission. In addition, reusable rockets reduce the amount of debris generated during launches, which is crucial in maintaining a clean environment

There's always THAT person somewhere in the workplace. They act like they know everything and are critical of anyone who doesn't immediately bow to their advice like it's gospel. They're also the same person who winds up complaining that they can't seem to advance in their career and eventually quits when it becomes obvious they'll never get anywhere in the company. It happens in every field, from cubical spaces in an office building to coliseum stages with world class musicians. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. I'm your host as always Colton Petry. My guest today is Taj Shotwell. Taj has been an educator for most of her life and has begun to channel that energy towards helping young people learn from the mistakes of the rich and famous. And that's the core lesson to take away: Learn from the failures of others. There are so many out there who have screwed up so spectacularly that they became known at least in part for those mistakes. We as humans have the ability to take that information in, and use it to avoid similar pitfalls in our personal lives. Being entirely honest: I struggled keeping this interview on track, it's probably one of the shortest I've done, and it ends pretty abruptly when my guest just has nothing left to say. You'll hear at least one portion where the response to my statement was a single word not really near the mic.  I had a listener correct me on my episode count, the trailer is in fact not an episode despite the effort that went into it, so the next episode is actually episode 100! We discuss Baj's new book from Fernwood Publishing, Country of Poxes: Three Germs and the Taking of Territory. In the book, we get an innovative technique for telling the history of colonialism and its effects on past and present capacities for collective survival, threatened as it has always been by microscopic entities that enter our bodies and undermine a misplaced and sinister pretence to mastery. In this conversation we talk about the question of culpability. Baj's book prompts Alexis to think about agency and how illness is distributed. In her reading, its argument stresses how social actors have made consequential choices in the past, and how, as Baj writes in the book, “reflecting on these experiences in the past” can enable “those of us who believe in a more just, a more healed… future” to “contribute in some way to cobbling together a truer liberation.” You won't just learn a lot by reading Country of Poxes—a text that focuses on the colonial continua of smallpox, tuberculosis, and syphilis—you'll also learn, I think, to think differently about the tendency to accept suffering and death. The book historicizes contemporary diagnostic tools, dominant and subordinate ideologies of care in health, as well as the struggle for radical alternatives to the “fragile” health care systems we currently have. This week we are joined by guest Alexis Shotwell to discuss how we might turn from the purity politics that govern many of our lives and this hurting world toward collective struggles for transformation and liberatory futurisms. Rather than forfeiting our complicity and implication in a world with mounting problems, we learn of a helpful heuristic for transforming inaction or the urge to be the perfect activist to a ground where we might be better- equipped to stick around for the long hall in struggles for social justice. According to Alexis, this practice calls for admitting our mistakes and centering repair. In this episode, we dive into the relationship between purity culture and white supremacism, our complicit locations and implications in violence, and the importance of showing up to repair our broken and harmed relations inherited or otherwise. Alexis elucidates that it is only through the messy process of owning up to these broken relations throughout time and seeing how we might participate in and take on culturally appropriate relations of repair, responsibility, friendship, and comradeship in the struggles for liberation that we can survive these times. We hope this episode inspires your curiosity and (re)activates your commitments to this world. Alexis Shotwell's work focuses on complexity, complicity, and collective transformation. Most of the time we work with JPEG images because that is the most common format for digital images. They have the virtue of decent quality combined with smaller file size, and so won't fill up your storage quite as fast. But if you want the highest quality you have to work with unprocessed images, called RAW images. These are simply the actual data recorded by the camera sensors, and they give you some advantages, such as better correction of white balance. But GIMP does not open RAW images directly. But there are some work-arounds which we discuss in this tutorial. Smith who has written a book called Charlottesville: The Untold Story. Ms. Smith explained that her research for the book clearly showed that the Charlottesville city government and police, in cooperation with former-Government McAuliffe's state regime, made arrangements for the demonstration that all but assured violence. The Democrats, for example, bussed in many busloads of outsiders to oppose the demonstrators. Indeed, evidence was found that shows the Charlottesville police at times pushed the two sides together rather than trying to keep them apart, and the city's Chief of Police twice told his subordinates something akin to "let them fight, it will be easier to declare the demonstration an unlawful assembly." Ms. Smith also made the interesting observation that in retrospect the staged riot in Charlottesville looks like an experiment that served as a trial run for the events in Washington DC on 6 January 2020.Www.toomikes.comhttps://www.empshield.com/?coupon=twomikesGet the explosive new book by Robert F Kennedy Jr. The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health.
