Since Labour came to power 12 months ago they have made home ownership one of their key messages. The headlines have focused on their ambitions to build 1.5m new homes over the course of this Parliament and in February they announced they would be 'modernising' home buying and selling process to make it fit for the 21st Century; but what does it really mean for conveyancers? The latest Today's Conveyancer podcast welcomes two protagonists who are involved in these efforts Nick Chadbourne, CEO of LMS, and Angela Hesketh, Head of Market Development at PEXA who both join the discussion in their roles representing the Open Property Data Association (OPDA). In the short term there are two ongoing projects; a A 12-week assessment of the needs of industry, specifically around data sharing and standardisation. The second project is led by Land Registry, and aims to digitise data points managed by central government and local authorities with the ambition to streamline data access and improve efficiencyThe OPDA's role is on creating the framework both for collecting and storing data associated with property transactions; and subsequently enabling it to be shared and relied upon. Nick describes the process as providing a 'vouch' validating its origin and reliability, allowing conveyancers to make informed decisions without extensive rechecking.ID has been widely touted as a user case; instead of verifying ID 3,4,5 times throughout a transaction it can instead be verified once and relied upon thereafter. There are specific issues particular to property explains Angela, and work is ongoing to create a supplementary code to existing digital identity legislation that meets these unique needs. Both Nick and Angela are excited about the potential; a world in which conveyancers can trust the data they receive and focus on delivering a high-quality service without the burden of extensive verification and reverification. Alongside bringing more of that verified data to the fore at the outset of the transaction and being able to rely upon it, this shift would allow conveyancers to concentrate on their core responsibilities and improve the overall customer journey.Listen in to hear how the government's modernisation agenda is shaping up and how it impacts conveyancers and the wider property profession. Admiral John (Jacky) Fisher radically transformed the Royal Navy in terms of its people, doctrine, equipment and structures. Dr Richard Dunley explains how. Few service chiefs have had such a profound effect on their service as Admiral of the Fleet, Baron Fisher of Kilverstone, Chief of the British Royal Navy in 1904-1910, and again in 1914-1915, before resigning in frustration over Churchill's Gallipoli campaign. Joining a wooden-hulled, sail-powered Royal Navy at the age of 13, by the time he retired aged 74, his Service was operating steel-hulled, oil-powered and technologically advanced battleships, with submarine and aviation arms. He was at the forefront of many of these reforms, but his impact went beyond the technology, overseeing profound changes in naval strategy (working alongside Julian Corbett - Season 1, Episode 1), doctrine, force disposition, personnel and training. Like other great strategic leaders, he was adept at shaping the political environment, securing for the Royal Navy the lion's share of the defence budget. Yet his legacy is mixed - his Royal Navy was undoubtedly a stronger, more capable fighting force but, according to our guest, was institutionally damaged and divided, and took some time to recover. Dr Richard Dunley is a senior lecturer in history and maritime strategy at the University of New South Wales, Canberra, where he teaches at the Australian Defence Force Academy. His research focuses on the relationship between navies and technology, with a particular emphasis on the Royal Navy in the early 20th century.

Gartner defines privileged access management (PAM) as tools that provide an elevated level of technical access through the management and protection of accounts, credentials and commands used to administer or configure systems and applications. Available as software, SaaS or hardware appliances, PAM tools manage privileged access for both people (system administrators and others) and machines (systems or applications). Gartner defines four distinct tool categories for PAM tools: privileged account and session management (PASM), privilege elevation and delegation management (PEDM), secrets management, and cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM).It is widely expected that in 2025, PAM will be shaped by advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation, enabling more proactive and adaptive security measures. As regulatory compliance becomes more stringent across various industries in Asia, organizations will be compelled to adopt robust PAM solutions to safeguard sensitive data and ensure accountability. The convergence of hybrid work environments and cloud technologies will also necessitate re-evaluating PAM strategies, emphasizing the need for flexible yet secure access controls. In this PodChats for FutureCISO, Phil Calvin, Chief Product Officer, Delinea, shares his views on some of CISOs' approaches when modernising PAM strategies for a security-first world.1. How have PAM tools and strategies evolved in the last two years following hybrid work, the shift to the cloud, and more recently the heightened interest in AI, ML and automation?2. For those that have already started to embed AI, ML and automation into their PAM strategies, what has worked and not worked?3. Any lessons learned when it comes to integration AI and ML into existing PAM implementations?4. What metrics should CISOs use to measure the effectiveness of their PAM solutions and practices?5. Given the heightened interest around data privacy and protection, but disparate guidelines and frameworks, what steps should CISOs/enterprises take to ensure compliance with regional regulations concerning privileged access? 6. How can CISOs ensure that their PAM solutions are scalable as the organization grows?7. What role does zero-trust play in PAM strategies and how do you see zero trust evolving in 2025 to PAM implementations?8. How do you see enterprises leveraging identity governance to strengthen their PAM initiatives? 9. Our topic is modernising PAM strategies for a security-first world, what's in store for Privilege Access Management in 2025?

Speaker: Associate Professor John Sorabji (UCL)The presentation will look at why England and Wales has, historically, been a 'good forum to shop in' for commercial dispute resolution. It will then consider four challenges to its ability to maintain that position, before turning to practical steps that could and, perhaps should, be taken to enable it to remain a forum of choice for commercial disputes.3CL runs the 3CL Travers Smith Lunchtime Seminar Series, featuring leading academics from the Faculty, and high-profile practitioners. For more information:https://www.3cl.law.cam.ac.uk/

Data Futurology - Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence From Industry Leaders
This week in the Data Futurology podcast, we have a special presentation to share. Ben Taylor, the Assistant Commissioner for Data Insights at the ATO was one of the leading keynote speakers at our recent OpsWorld event in Sydney. There, he provided delegates with a deep dive into the data journey for the ATO in recent years. As you can probably guess, the ATO handles millions of lines of data every day, across data lakes that are petabytes in size. With a data team of around 800, there is often the sense that they're racing against chaos to deliver. However, in recent years, the effort to transform and modernise the approach to data has been highly successful. The ATO was able to transition to cloud-driven data systems, and is now seen as a deep and strategic partner to the other lines of business within the organisation. In this presentation, Taylor shares some open and transparent examples of the challenges that the ATO faced, the steps that they took to embrace AI and automated analytics while maintaining human oversight and decision-making, and how the data team went about building trust to earn the support of the other lines of business. He also overviews the value of XOps – what that means from the ATO's perspective – and why all data leaders should be looking at defining and adopting a XOps approach to their own data strategy. For deep insights into one of the largest data-driven organisations in Australia, Taylor's presentation on the ATO's experience with data is essential. Ben shares his insights on the conversation. 19:27: Taylor shares an example of what XOps looks like in action at the ATO. 23:45: How did the ATO avoid becoming too process heavy, as Government agencies can at times become? 27:13: How can teams handle the sense of “chaos” that comes from increasing demands from lines of business, while also managing the legacy tech debt? 29:13: Q & A with Taylor from the audience. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS “Since the earliest examples of tabular data structures two and a half 1000 years ago to the earliest examples of statistical data and analytics about 350 years ago, the pace of human abilities in regards to data analysis has increased at an incredibly, incredibly fast pace.” “The real tipping point for digitally enabled data and analytics came a mere 27 years ago when for the first time, the cost of storing information on digital media dropped below that of storage on paper.” “At the ATO, we see data as the third note of a triad between business, technology, and data. “What exactly is XOps? Honestly, we've spent a lot of time asking ourselves the same question. If you go out there and try to find someone who can tell you what XOps is, you won't find it… although I'm sure you'll find a few consultants that will sell you an answer for a few $100,000.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/datafuturology/message
Legacy modernisation is one of the most difficult, and often misunderstood, elements of digital transformation. It can be expensive and very disruptive. It has more in common with business transformation than cloud migration and can lend itself to risky large scale implementations.Dave, Sjoukje & Rob are joined by John Kodumal, CTO and Co-Founder of LaunchDarkly, they talk about how greenfield development is increasingly rare, evolving a running system is much more common. New method and tools are now available to move this past a static or quarterly update, risk heavy process, such as feature management which allows legacy to be modernised with zero outage and switch over risk. In this weeks trend we talk about the emerging field of developer productivity, why it can be helpful, but its also very difficult to do effectively.TLDR:00:50 Intros01:30 Cloud conversation with John Kodumal21:30 Developer Productivity29:42 Scaling People by Claire Hughes Johnson (book recommendation)!Further Reading:Scaling People: https://amzn.eu/d/af6XVeN
SFM host Danusia Malina-Derben takes on the role of guest on the “Father Daughter Dance” podcast hosted by Tim Taylor. Together we discuss the path forward to take on the challenges of being the best Dad possible. We talk about how a reframing of fathers roles and responsibilities is something that's widely desired by many men but only slowly being enacted. Of course we talk about how women can, and must help and ways that we hurt efforts to ‘get there'. Lastly, we also touch on my relationship with my father and how it evolved particularly towards the end of his life. “I love School for Mothers, it's an injection of badass”
The multi-tasking actor, executive producer and beauty entrepreneur shares her personal journey with BoF's Imran Amed and explains how she unlocked her full potential across a variety of pursuits. Background: Tracee Ellis Ross is best known for her roles in Girlfriends and Black-ish, but she is also the founder and CEO of Pattern which she launched in 2019 after more than a decade of development to address the gap in the market for products designed specifically for curly, coily, textured hair. The Golden Globe-winning, Emmy-nominated Ross joins BoF's Imran Amed on The BoF Podcast to talk about managing the little voice in her head, killing perfectionism and cultivating self-love and acceptance. Finding purpose and unlocking potential starts by interrogating what you love, then finding ways to merge who you are with “what makes your heart sing,” said Ross. Key Insights: Pattern was born out of frustration. Ross couldn't find the right tools or products to serve her needs, and never saw Black women being centred — despite sitting at the centre of culture. Ross took learnings from developing a clothing line with JCPenney to help get her business off the ground. From there, she sought out the right partners. Key to evaluating partners was learning to be present during conversation. In her work with Pattern and with companies like Ulta on diversity and inclusion, Ross hopes to dissolve the myth that Black hair care and beauty is a niche market. Additional Resources: Modernising the Black Hair Care Market: A new wave of start-ups shaking up the textured hair care space are catching the attention of major retailers and investors, grabbing more shelf space and venture capital. Building the Glossier of the Black Hair Market: With her new DTC beauty brand, Radswan, blogger-turned-entrepreneur Freddie Harrel is pitching clip-in textured hair extensions and wigs to the digitally savvy black consumer. To kick off this bonus FOOTPRINT+ episode, Pete the Builder spoke to Andrew Waugh about using timber in constructionAndrew Waugh, Waugh Thistleton ArchitectsAndrew is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects, an architecture practice dedicated to designing buildings and places of the highest architectural quality that acknowledge their impact on the environment. “…for the last 20 years, we've become increasingly fascinated, even slightly obsessed with the opportunities for building in timber for designing beautiful buildings in timber.” Next up, Steve Randall spoke to Angela Crowther about repurposing existing buildingsAngela Crowther is an Associate Director at Arup. She was a keynote speaker at the event. Her talk was entitled Repurposing existing buildings to save the embodied carbon. Modernising assets to make them more energy-efficient can be done in various ways. For example, one could choose the retrofitting option to make a building fit for purpose for the future. “The opportunity to immediately save 50% of our carbon budget by protecting and celebrating and reusing what we have already built in the past into the future, rather than starting again.” Peter the Builder spoke to Ann-Marie Fallon of Architype about PassivhausAnn-Marie Fallon is an Associate Director and CEPH Designer at Architype. She was a keynote speaker at the event. Her talk was entitled Is Passivhaus the answer? “My context from working with Passivhaus buildings for the last 13 years is that it's become a bit of a dirty word. You know, clients are afraid of it, design teams don't want to touch it, contractors are nervous of building.” Pete the Builder spoke to Councillor Samer Bagaeen about the government's role in achieving Net-ZeroSamer Bagaeen is a member of the Brighton & Hove City Council. With a background in the built environment, Samer is a chartered town planner and a chartered surveyor.Samer believes that achieving Net-Zero ultimately comes down to what local governments and councils in the cities do. He does however acknowledge that there are constraints, the biggest one being money. Despite these constraints, he believes that governments need to be more ambitious in their policies and the delivery of these policies.“You need the bankers to step out, you need central government to kind of be more ambitious in their policies and the delivery, so it's a collective effort”Pete the Builder spoke to Courtney MacDougall of Vattenfall about educating people on low carbon solutions.Courtney MacDougall is a project engineer for Vattenfall. Working with the wider project team, she provides technical advice and steers the project through the development and delivery stages. “So it's really that education piece that you don't need to have a boiler within your house or in your flat, you can have a heat pump” Next up, Pete the Builder spoke to Dan Epstein about using solar energy. Dan Epstein is a sustainability leader for Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC). He was a chairperson at the event.
