It rallies the troops around “fake elections”, around the right to buy a gun, around White Supremacists. Those issues can get some support, but “Let's get together for Capitalism!” That is bad. We commemorate Michael Lardner, founder and driving force behind the Marxist Education Project who died last Wednesday at 68. He hailed from a family of Michigan autoworkers and came to New York as a young man to work on the grapes boycott called by the United Farm Workers. In that same era, he helped found the New York Marxist School which became the Brecht Forum. When the Brecht Forum closed down in 2014, Michael stepped into a moment of great sadness and disappointment and launched the Marxist Education Project.

When the Brecht Forum closed down in 2014, Michael stepped into a moment of great sadness and disappointment and launched the Marxist Education Project. We look at the ongoing struggle to unionize workers at starbucks franchises across the US. Starbucks Workers at 316 stores in 36 states have filed to unionize despite starbucks' aggressive anti-union campaign. So far, 201 Starbucks stores in 32 states have won union elections. Just 40 stores have lost an election. In retaliation, Starbucks has been union-busting. Among other tactics, they have fired worker-organizers and sometimes even closed down stores. Austin Locke, a key starbucks organizer, was fired from starbucks on July 5 just five days after his store on Starbucks at Ditmars Blvd and 31st Street in the Astoria, Queens won their union election 7-4. He speaks with us about his experience and updates us on the union fight. Advocates for the Build Public Renewables Act get another chance to make their case tomorrow. On Thursdays New York State Assembly will host an unprecedented mid-summer hearing on the BRPA. If passed and signed into law, the bill would greatly expand New York's public power system and the state's use of renewable energy sources. To discuss this, we speak with Sarahana Shrestha. She recently knocked off a 13-term State Assemblymember in her Hudson Valley district while running on the promise to fight for public power. Finally, we get a much-needed sermon from Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping about their new “Earth Church” in a former bank building on the Lower East Side. Billy insists if we're going to survive the climate crisis, we will need soon need an Earth-centered cultural revolution.

Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he taught economics from 1973 to 2008. He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, New York City. Earlier he taught economics at Yale University (1967-1969) and at the City College of the City University of New York (1969-1973). In 1994, he was a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Paris (France), I (Sorbonne). Wolff was also a regular lecturer at the Brecht Forum in New York City. Professor Wolff's weekly show, Economic Update with Richard D. Wolff, is syndicated on over 70 radio stations nationwide and available for broadcast on Free Speech TV. Professor Wolff enjoys french cuisine and lives in New York City with his wife, Dr. Harriet Fraad. They have two adult children. Over the last twenty-five years, in collaboration with his colleague, Stephen Resnick, he has developed a new approach to political economy. While it retains and systematically elaborates the Marxist notion of class as surplus labor, it rejects the economic determinism typical of most schools of economics and usually associated with Marxism as well. This new approach appears in several books co-authored by Resnick and Wolff and numerous articles by them separately and together. Common to all of Professor Wolff's work are two central components. The first is the introduction of class, in its elaborated surplus labor definition, as a new "entry point" of social analysis. Richard David Wolff (born April 1, 1942) is an American economist, known for his work on economic methodology and class analysis. He is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University in New York. Wolff has also taught economics at Yale University, City University of New York, University of Utah, University of Paris I (Sorbonne), and The Brecht Forum in New York City.

This is the first in a series of three lectures, presented by The Call, on the fundamentals of Marxist politics by Vivek Chibber. Chibber is a Professor of Sociology at NYU and Editor of Catalyst. In this opening lecture, first presented in 2008 at the Brecht Forum, Chibber explains how class works under capitalism. To get there, Chibber first takes a step back and explains how classes were organized under feudalism. He then shows how the capitalist class structure differs from its feudal predecessor. In contrast to the liberal conception of class as a fluid term for people's income, education, and/or cultural taste, Chibber concludes that it's far more useful to understand class in terms of people's relationship to the means of production. Do they own the factories, tools, and raw materials that go into making things? If so, then they're capitalists, and that ownership that puts them at a structural advantage over their employees, who we call the working class.
