Welcome back to The NERVE! Conversations With Movement Elders a podcast from the National Council of Elders featuring intergenerational conversations between elder and younger organizers about important topics in our movements today. This episode features a conversation about how we can navigate climate crisis and survive on the frontlines in the immediate moment, while still moving forward with power building for a new world? Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf Coast Crisis that unfolded in 2005 marked a major social movement turning point in the United States. Katrina exposed the combination of a heightened climate crisis and how the state and private forces are arranged not to protect or rebuild but to extract, abandon, and displace our people and our resources. This episode digs into community responses to Katrina 20 years ago, and current organizing in the face of Hurricane Helene and flooding across central Appalachia. This episode is hosted by Aljosie Aldrich Harding (she/her) a member of NCOE, a community organizer, a memory worker, and a strong believer in political education and spiritual healing. Joining Aljosie in this conversation are: Artivista Karlin (she/her) grew up in Miami, Florida and is a current college student based in Durham, NC. Artivista organizes with the Sunrise Movement a movement of young people fighting to stop the climate crisis and win a Green New Deal. Willa Johnson (she/her) lives in eastern Kentucky where she was raised. In 2022, Willa and her son lost their house in devastating floods. She has been doing flood and tornado response work in rural Appalachia ever since. She is the Disaster Recovery Communications Coordinator for Invest Appalachia Ms. Oleta Garrett Fitzgerald (she/her) is based in Jackson, Mississippi and has been working across the gulf coast region for decades. Oleta is the Executive Director of the Children's Defense Fund Southern Regional Office. She is also the Regional Administrator for the Southern Rural Black Women's Initiative for Economic and Social Justice. She was active in Hurricane Katrina support work. We're back from hiatus with an incredible conversation featuring Roshni Nedungadi — co-founder, founding partner, and Chief Research Officer of HIT Strategies. Roshni is one of the sharpest minds in political research today, with a career built on elevating the voices of communities too often ignored in traditional polling: people of color, young voters, and low-propensity voters. In this episode, we talk about how she found her path from Wisconsin politics to running her own firm in D.C., why representation in research matters, and what it means to build something new in a field that's still overwhelmingly white and male. If you've ever questioned how change actually happens behind the scenes in politics — this is the episode for you.00:01:00 – Meet Roshni: a polling expert and co-founder of HIT Strategies00:03:00 – The 2008 election, student protests, and how political activism shaped her early career00:08:00 – From legislative aide to data analyst: building technical skills through direct mail and targeting00:12:00 – The power of representation: working for a Black-led firm and learning to take up space00:14:00 – How she and co-founder Terrance Woodbury started HIT Strategies00:15:00 – The 2016 election, youth voters, and the warning signs that went ignored00:18:00 – Starting a firm as women and people of color in a predominantly white industry00:20:00 – The role her mother played in modeling entrepreneurship and offering support00:22:00 – Breaking into political consulting and navigating gatekeeping in the industry00:23:30 – Building early momentum with the Steyer campaign and work on Black and Latinx voters00:24:30 – Responding to the moment: 2020, George Floyd, and a demand for deeper polling00:25:30 – Roshni's current focus: polling young women, AAPI voters, and reproductive justice00:26:30 – The gaps in AAPI polling — and why representation in data still matters00:28:00 – What it means to scale while staying rooted in community00:29:30 – Advice for BIPOC folks trying to break into politics, research, or entrepreneurship00:33:00 – Final reflections on pushing the industry forward and showing up with authenticityPolling isn't just about numbers — it's about who gets seen, whose voice counts, and how decisions get made. Roshni's work challenges the old norms of political research by centering voters that traditional firms often overlook. This conversation is a masterclass in how to build power through data, strategy, and representation — and a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of politics.Roshni is a founding partner and chief research officer of HIT Strategies. Roshni has led expansive, multi-phase research projects exploring how people across the United States feel about abortion access, gun control, mass incarceration, and other important issues on behalf of advocacy leaders such as Everytown for Gun Safety, NARAL, and Vera Institute for Justice. Roshni's research seeks to find nuance in how Americans, particularly BIPOC individuals and low-propensity voters, conceptualize these issues at a time where division and partisanship run rampant. Roshni's research on behalf of HIT Strategies ultimately is meant to lift up the voices of marginalized communities in the United States, one of the fastest-growing and oft-ignored voting blocks in American politics. https://hitstrat.com/our-team/Instagram: @hitstrategies If you enjoyed the show and you...

Today's guest is Jay DeMayo, Jay is the longtime strength coach for men's basketball at the University of Richmond and the founder of CVASPS—the Central Virginia Sport Performance Seminar. He's known for connecting top minds in sport science and coaching, and for his practical, athlete-first approach to physical preparation. Where the emphasis of an athletic performance program can easily be centered from a narrow perspective, Jay considers a wide variety of inputs, from an athlete's underlying structure and positional abilities to their perception of workout adjustments, to specialized exercises and technical training elements. In this episode, Jay digs into the principles he uses to prepare athletes for the demands of the game. From a foundational perspective, he discusses building work capacity and progressing split squats. On the power side, he shares his take on Olympic lifts and French Contrast training, while also addressing the role of autonomy and individualization in his approach. Throughout the show, Jay unpacks practical tools and coaching strategies that drive long-term athletic development. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength. Jay reflects on how older training styles—like Westside—can still have value when creatively repurposed. It's not about mimicking those programs but about borrowing what drives athlete engagement and technical mastery today. What to try: Use methods like box squats to teach depth and posture before progressing to more dynamic movements. Connect the dots for athletes: show how learning positions now sets them up for more “fun” or explosive lifts later. Reinforce that mastering basic postures unlocks more advanced training, not just better numbers. Unveiling Louis Simmons' Strength Training Insights [11:01] Jay highlights lessons from studying Louie Simmons—not for copying his powerlifting templates, but to appreciate mastery and intention. Athletes need to understand why they're training a certain way, not just how. What to try: Share stories or videos of experts from outside your sport to spark discussions about mastery and approach. Ask athletes to reflect on what "winning" a lift means to them—focus, technique, or load? Create reflective moments for athletes to assess their own intent during sessions. Enhancing Basketball Players' Performance Through Tailored Training [14:24] Forget rigid metrics for the sake of numbers. Jay focuses on using basic force plate data (jump height + contraction time) to guide individual exercise choices—not to chase numbers, but to fit each athlete's needs. What to try: Test vertical jump and contraction time; use results to bucket athletes into fast/slow jumpers. Prescribe exercises accordingly:

We chat with Eric Blanc — author of the new book We Are the Union: How Worker-to-Worker Organizing Is Revitalizing Labor and Winning Big — about how the model of labor organizing through grassroots, horizontal movements is taking off in a huge way. This growing model of worker-to-worker organizing is challenging the conventional model of large, hierarchical unions. By enrolling millions of new workers into the labor movement, worker-to-worker organizing is building a stronger base for greater victories with long-lasting impact. Effective labor organizing is crucial for advancing social equality and democratic power—and our models of organizing should embody those values. ••• We Are the Union | Eric Blanc https://www.ucpress.edu/books/we-are-the-union ••• Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee https://workerorganizing.org/ ••• Save Our Public Services https://actionnetwork.org/forms/thank-you-for-taking-action-stay-in-the-fight/ Standing Plugs: ••• Order Jathan's new book: https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520398078/the-mechanic-and-the-luddite ••• Subscribe to Ed's substack: https://substack.com/@thetechbubble ••• Subscribe to TMK on patreon for premium episodes: https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (bsky.app/profile/jathansadowski.com) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.x.com/bigblackjacobin). Growing up in Canada, Linh Nguyen never thought she'd be on the road fighting for the representation and visibility of in American politics. But like most women, she wanted something done, so she did it herself. Rising through the ranks of Democratic politics and movement work, she eventually landed as Executive Vice President and COO of AAPI Victory Fund which focuses on empowering 24 million strong Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to realize their power. We talked a lot about what she learned and experienced along the way on her professional and personal journey, such as the importance of working with other women of color, being a strong advocate for your community's needs and what happened with the AAPI Vote in the 2024 election.https://www.aapivictoryfund.com/If you enjoyed the show and you want to join our community of other women of color who are embracing their voice head over to https://embracingyourvoicepod.com/Connect with Atima on:InstagramTwitterLinkedin
Ever been that only Black or Latino or Asian person in the room? And you had to advocate for your community's interests too? This is something Sindy Benavides faced a lot throughout her career that led her to work for civil rights organizations working on behalf of the larger Latino community. As President of the Latino Victory Fund (LVF), Sindy's day to day is focused on building political power for Latinos at the local, state and federal level and advocating for issues important to this constituency as well. As a long time colleague and friend in the work, we talk about everything including: her and life and career and why she thought it important to go to an HBCU for college (and how that informs her work today), how she got her start in politics, the importance of trusting your gut and speaking your truth (even if does make you anxious as hell), we also get to what happened with the Latino Vote in the 2024 election and what she and LVF are planning for the road ahead. If you enjoyed the show and you want to join our community of other women of color who are embracing their voice head over to https://embracingyourvoicepod.com/Connect with Atima on:InstagramTwitterLinkedin

Unleashing Leadership Potential: Insights from Mike Earnest, VP of Worldwide Sales at Wiz As the VP of Worldwide Sales at Wiz, Mike Earnest has achieved unparalleled success, rising from a sales representative to a leadership role in just 4-5 years. His journey is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and a profound understanding of what drives sales. In this article, we'll delve into Mike's insights on leadership, sales, and management, exploring the essential principles that have fueled his success. Understanding Customer Pain Points: The Key to Unlocking Success Mike's approach to sales is centered around understanding customer pain points. Rather than focusing on features and functionalities, he emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing the underlying issues that impact a company's bottom line. This empathetic approach has allowed him to build strong relationships with clients and drive meaningful sales. Building a High-Performing Sales Team: The Earnest Formula Mike's leadership philosophy is built around the concept of "inspect and improve." He emphasizes the importance of setting high standards and continually evaluating and refining processes to achieve excellence. He also believes that leaders must "earn the right" to inspect by aligning their goals with the organization's objectives. The Art of Coaching Conversations: Empowering Team Members Effective coaching conversations are critical to Mike's leadership approach. He encourages leaders to focus on progress, solutions, and improvement rather than criticism or blame. By doing so, leaders can empower team members to take ownership and drive results. The Power of Accountability: Setting and Tracking Goals Mike stresses the importance of setting goals and holding team members accountable for achieving them. By working together to establish clear objectives, leaders can ensure that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goal. People Matter: The Importance of Human Relationships In an era of automation and technology, Mike believes that human relationships remain essential. Leaders should prioritize communication, empathy, and understanding to foster a culture of collaboration and trust. Leadership by Example: Setting a High Standard Mike emphasizes the importance of leadership by example. Effective leaders set a high standard and inspire others to do the same. By modeling the behaviors and values they wish to see in their team members, leaders can cultivate a culture of excellence. The Role of Data: Informing Decisions and Driving Success In a large organization, data and metrics play a crucial role in decision-making. Mike advocates for using data to inform decisions, continually evaluating progress, and making adjustments as needed. A Personal Approach to Leadership Mike believes that leaders should rely on real-time feedback and collaboration to drive success. By fostering open communication and empowering team members, leaders can create an environment that fosters creativity, innovation, and growth. In conclusion, Mike Earnest's leadership philosophy is built upon a foundation of empathy, understanding, and empowerment. By focusing on customer pain points, building a high-performing sales team, and leveraging data to inform decisions, he has achieved remarkable success. As leaders, we can learn valuable lessons from his approach, applying these principles to drive our own leadership journeys.

Hello this is Nate Scott, author of Life Is Rich: How To Create Lasting Wealth, and welcome to the Life Is Rich podcast. In today's ‘Life Is Rich” podcast, I will share the how "Uncle Sam Will Pay You To Run A Home-Based Business". Nate Scott, the author of "Life is Rich: How to Create Lasting Wealth." He discusses the financial challenges faced by many Americans, particularly the baby boomers who are retiring with insufficient retirement funds. Nate explains that there are two tax systems in the country: one for employees and one for business owners. The tax system for business owners offers more opportunities for deductions, allowing them to keep more money and reinvest in their businesses. The goal is to create jobs and stimulate the economy. Nate emphasizes the importance of becoming a business owner to take advantage of the tax benefits and reduce the burden of taxes on personal finances. He highlights that small to medium-sized businesses create the majority of job growth in the United States, and Congress provides significant tax advantages to encourage this. Nate encourages individuals to consider starting a home-based business, as it allows them to redirect personal living expenses into business expenses, which are fully tax-deductible. This can result in substantial tax savings, potentially slashing tax bills by 30% to 50%. He explains that individuals with home-based businesses can qualify for new tax deductions, even if they haven't yet made a profit. By having a home-based business, individuals can benefit from extra cash in their pockets and the potential for additional income. Nate reveals that not having a home-based business or being unaware of the tax breaks associated with it can cost individuals thousands of dollars each year in overpaid taxes. He promises to provide a tax strategy course to partners that will explain the specific tax breaks available and how to qualify for them. Nate emphasizes the importance of daily business-building activities and recommends finding a product or service one is passionate about to launch a successful home-based business. By doing so, individuals can take advantage of the tax benefits provided by the business owner tax system and potentially save thousands of dollars in taxes each year. Nate Scott is a Strategic Leadership Coach and author of “Life Is Rich: How To Create Lasting Wealth”. From Enlisted Soldier to Executive to Entrepreneur, Nate has been equipping people who feel they have potential for more to be effective decision makers for over 20 years. He is passionate about helping women learn the leadership principles and disciplines needed to succeed no matter what the goal is. When Allen Morris is asked what a policy director does he gets to the point and is not shy: “I tell the President and Congress what to do.” As policy director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, Allen advocates for his community in Congress and in state houses where xenophobia, transphobia, and anti-Blackness dominate policy making. In states where the very humanity of LGBTQ people is under attack, the Task Force supports and partners with grassroots group and hosts kiki's (social gatherings, for the uninitiated) a safe space to share information, fears, and joy. In this episode of Power Station, Allen talks about the singular contributions that the Task Force has made, over the past 50 years, in advancing LGBTQ rights. Queering Democracy, just one pillar of the work, along with its companions, Queering Equity, Queering Faith, and Building Power, is a window on a powerful template for nonprofit policy advocacy. It's components, from Fed Watch, a collective deep dive into regulatory rulemaking to revving up participation in the Census and the vote, demonstrate the Task Force's intentionality and dedication to justice. Allen is everything. Listen and you will know.

I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG1 further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system. Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones. Visit AthleticGreens.com/Tim to claim this special offer today and receive the free Vitamin D Liquid Formula (and 5 free travel packs) with your first subscription purchase! That's up to a one-year supply of Vitamin D as added value when you try their delicious and comprehensive all-in-one daily greens product.*This episode is also brought to you by Eight Sleep!
