“Anybody with half a heart could understand that this is a very bad deal for these feeling beings. Waking up every day at the same place where these horrible things happened, it's not right.” – Gene Grant It's been almost a decade since the National Institutes of Health ended the use of chimpanzees for biomedical research. But today we still have scores of chimpanzees sitting in labs. They're not being tested on, but they are still waiting to be moved into a sanctuary. This is happening even though there is a law in place that established a federal sanctuary system to provide lifetime care for chimpanzees retired from medical research. 26 of these former research chimpanzees live in the Alamogordo Primate Facility on Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. I asked Gene Grant, the chief program and policy officer for Animal Protection New Mexico, to come on the show and talk about why all these years later, these chimps have still not been moved to a sanctuary. And how that changes. LINKS Animal Protection New Mexico https://apnm.org/ Chimp Haven https://chimphaven.org/donate/ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/23/science/chimpanzees-research-retirement.html

His granddaughter Vanessa Ivy Rose explains what it means to her family. And, Ukrainian border guard Roman Hrybov told a Russian warship, "Go f*** yourself," and it became a heroic moment in Ukraine. Hrybov talks about that moment and his time as a Russian prisoner of war after he refused to surrender. Then, a federal judge ruled in 2022 that the National Institutes of Health had to move retired lab chimpanzees to a sanctuary in Louisiana. But the agency says it has no plans to do so. No Dogs Left Behind Jeffrey Beri founded the global animal rescue No Dogs Left Behind. He checks in with Animal Radio from China where he's rescuing thousands of dogs from a horrific life and ultimate slaughter. He reports that the Chinese are changing their view on pets. Listen Now Think About Your Pets When Buying That Tech Gadget Tech expert Kim Komando says every piece of technology we put into our homes could very easily emit a sound that cannot be heard by humans but comes in loud and clear for pets. That's not to say pets are suffering because of our gadgets, but that the possibility exists and it is something you may want to consider. In scientific terms, humans can hear sounds up to about 20,000 Hz, while dogs can hear sounds up to 45,000 Hz and cats 64,000 Hz. That means there are frequencies undetectable to us but very noticeable and even hurtful to animals. Lights can also be a problem, because animals see the world differently than humans. LED lights flicker more than others, though the speed at which they do so isn't really noticed by humans. Dogs, however, are sensitive up to 80 Hz or flickers per second. Listen Now Retiring Former Research Chimps The Director of Behavior and Research at Chimp Haven joins Animal Radio to talk about the many chimps that are now living at her sanctuary in Louisiana. Amy Fultz is currently fund raising to help build more habitats in the 200-acre refuge. Listen Now Read more about this week's show.
In 2015, the National Institutes of Health ended invasive biomedical research on its hundreds of chimps. Since then, it's been gradually moving the animals to a sanctuary in Louisiana called Chimp Haven. NPR science correspondent Nell Greenfieldboyce joins the show to talk about the NIH's effort to retire research chimps and why it's complicated.Read more of Nell's reporting about chimp retirement:https://n.pr/3HsgmLq, https://n.pr/3AW3smo and https://n.pr/3sbHyaVEmail the show at ShortWave@NPR.org
Located in Keithville, Chimp Haven is the largest protected area for chimps in the country. Many of the residents were once owned by the federal government for research; others were pets. Now they all live a leisurely life, which everyone can see in the new National Geographic and Disney+ series "Meet The Chimps." Amy Fultz – Chimp Haven’s director of Behavior, Education and Research – joins Errol Laborde, executive editor of Louisiana Life, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot to tell the fascinating story of the chimps and their behavioral patterns. Oh yes, we will also discover if there are any favorites in the group.

Learning about intelligent animals is one thing, but what about those that share over 98% of their DNA with us? Just how smart can they be? Today I had the opportunity to talk with the veterinarian at chimp haven, Dr. Raven Jackson-Jewett. Over the last decade, this woman has cared for and looked after hundreds of rescued chimpanzees to give them a shot at living a normal life. This great sanctuary offers 200 acres of land for the chimpanzees to socialize and form families. The stories told in this episode are mind-blowing and what is even greater is the care that the animal care staff provides for each individual chimpanzee. Make sure to check them out on Instagram for tons of cool photos and videos of what goes on at the sanctuary @chimphaven. Check out their website, https://chimphaven.org/, and see how you can donate to make sure the chimps are getting the best quality of life. You can even sign up to get updates on your favorite chimp! You can learn about their habitats, enrichments, and diets so go check it out! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Studying primates offers insight into human evolution and behavior. Primatologist Elizabeth Lonsdorf shares her ongoing work with wild chimpanzees and gorillas: a unique long-term project that extends the seminal research by Jane Goodall and colleagues into the 21st century. Modern humans wean years earlier than African apes, a fact that is associated with several unique behaviors of being human (involving fertility, brain development, and life span). But our understanding of weaning in apes is actually quite limited. Dr Lonsdorf uses new technology and tools to better understand chimpanzee and gorilla development, and in the process learn more about us. Elizabeth V. Lonsdorf is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Biological Foundations of Behavior Program at Franklin & Marshall College. She began studying primates as an undergraduate at Duke University where she conducted research on percussive foraging in the endangered aye-aye. She completed her Ph.D. at the Jane Goodall Institute's Center for Primate Studies at the University of Minnesota, and was founding director of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. She directs Franklin & Marshall’s primate research laboratory, is a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and serves on the board of directors for Chimp Haven and the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary. She returns annually to Gombe to maintain a research program focused on chimpanzee health and infant development in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute and other collaborators. She is a 02018-19 fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University.
