The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down USC baseball's big rivalry series win over then-No. 14 UCLA that helped push the Trojans into the top 25 rankings for the first time since 2023. Shotgun and Kasey take a look at all the action, pointing out the positives of the Trojans improving to 32-16 with a 16-8 mark in Big Ten play and a third-place spot in the standings behind only Iowa and the Bruins. They discuss the power of names that start with the letter 'A' as well as the Trojans' ability to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss in the series opener to still be able to get the series win. Shotgun and Kasey also look at how USC boosted its resume behind strong production of a pair of Lopezes. The podcasters also discuss three negatives, including a growing trend for Caden Hunter and a tough outing for top reliever Brodie Burcell. USC hitting coach Travis Jewett then joins the show to talk about how the Trojans' offense was able to bounce back after failing to capitalize on opportunities in the series opener against UCLA, ending the game with the bases loaded in a one-run loss. He also discusses how the USC lineup has got longer and stronger as the season has progressed with the development of players like Andrew Lamb, Jack Basseer, Adrian and Augie Lopez. Jewett even talks about the art of helping hitters break out of slumps. After a break, Adrian Lopez joins the show to talk about his transfer portal journey that has taken him to two high schools and two colleges over the last four seasons and how he's found a home at USC, a place he didn't grow up rooting for but his whole family did. Lopez discusses his connection with Jewett and how the two have worked together this season. Lopez also shares his favorite between-inning festivity that takes place during games and talks about the connection of players, including ones on hated teams and those in the USC locker room. Shotgun and Kasey close out the show taking a look at where the Trojans stand after winning another Big Ten series, improving their RPI briefly up to No. 29 (now No. 31). The podcast then previews USC's upcoming week of action with the Trojans taking on Big Ten Pitcher of the Year candidate Joseph Dzierwa and Michigan State at Great Park this weekend. Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith with another episode in our four-part season preview, leading up to the start of the 2025 USC baseball season. In part three of the season preview series, USC assistant and hitting coach Travis Jewett joins the Dedeaux Download to talk about growing as an offense in Year 3 and what the Trojans can do to drive the baseball more after having only 34 home runs as a team in 2024. He also discusses the strides the sophomore and junior hitters that were thrust into early roles the last two seasons have taken to become more impactful bats for the Trojans in 2025. USC's recruiting coordinator also chats about what it means to now have a nearly full roster of players the coaching staff recruited rather than inherited. Jewett discusses the hitters he's excited about and how Ethan Hedges being used as a two-way player could create some extra opportunities. Among other players that are brought up, Jewett talks about the impact UNLV transfer Kade Higgins could have as a veteran with some pop, a recent extra-base spree from sophomore Dean Carpentier in practice and how sophomore Kevin Takeuchi has continued to develop his game. After a break, Shotgun and Jack then talk all things hitting with the position players taking center stage. They comb through the Trojans' 2025 roster looking at what USC will have on the offensive side. The podcasting duo also supply superlatives for the Trojan bats, giving their picks for the team's best hitter, most impactful newcomer and breakout candidates among others. Summary Father Ethan Jewett shares his journey of being an out gay man in religious leadership and his advocacy for acceptance and understanding within the LGBTQ+ community. He grew up in Tampa, Florida, in a Jewish household and experienced a crisis of faith after witnessing the exclusion of elderly congregants from worship due to financial reasons. In his early thirties, he rediscovered religion and found a welcoming community in the Episcopal Church. Father Ethan discusses the challenges he faced in the ordination process and the tension between LGBTQ+ identity and the expectations of the church. He emphasizes the need for the church to be more inclusive and accepting of queer individuals. Additionally, Father Ethan shares his passion for fitness and the importance of embracing and celebrating the human body. He also talks about the role of religion and spirituality in finding centering and purpose, the significance of being oneself and living authentically, and the challenges of navigating LGBTQ relationships within the church. Takeaways Father Ethan Jewett's journey as an out gay man in religious leadership highlights the need for acceptance and understanding within the LGBTQ+ community. Father Ethan emphasizes the importance of embracing and celebrating the human body, countering the stigmatization of the body within religious contexts. His personal journey of blending fitness and spirituality showcases the power of physical wellness in building confidence and self-esteem. Religion and spirituality can provide a moral framework for understanding the world and living with integrity. Being oneself and living authentically is essential for personal fulfillment and maintaining integrity. The Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, returns with the 2024 college baseball season barely a week away. Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith return to preview USC baseball's offensive attack heading into the second year under head coach Andy Stankiewicz and hitting coach Travis Jewett. The podcasting duo talk all things hitting with the position players taking center stage. They comb through the Trojans' 2024 roster looking at what USC will have on the offensive side of the ball, going position by position to discuss the contenders to play for the Trojans this year. One thing became evident pretty quickly -- USC has a lot of pieces that can play multiple positions. Shotgun and Jack also supply superlatives for the Trojan bats, giving their picks for the team's best hitter, most impactful newcomer and breakout candidates among others. That all comes after the always energetic and enthusiastic Travis Jewett joins the Dedeaux Download to talk about the unique challenges the Trojans have to face this season as relative roaming gypsies with no home field. USC's hitting coach and recruiting coordinator also discusses the hitters he's excited about and how the positional versatility of the group options up a lot of possibilities for various lineups. Among other players that are brought up, Jewett talks about the the impact Connecticut transfer Chris Brown could have as a middle-of-the-lineup power threat and how preseason All-American center fielder Austin Overn has continued to develop his game. EP 78 - Deane Jewett, Why Tonality is SO HUGE in ConversationToo many times when we are communicating with someone our message gets lost in the shuffle. How many fights have you had that started with a text message? It's most likely because of the lack of or incorrect tonality being used in the conversation. Learning to adjust your tonality can often make all the difference.Deane Jewett was working in the automotive industry when he learned about the career opportunities at Liberty National. Knowing he'd have to start from ground zero with very little knowledge about the world of insurance, Deane proved that if he stayed motivated, flexible and adaptable, he could succeed.Deane Jewett is Lori's husband, mentor, and Agency Owner with Globe Life - Liberty National Division. Deane is grateful he took a leap of faith with that first step which led to both a lucrative career and an opportunity to give back to the community.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why Deane feels communication is the most important life skill that is often overlookedWhy body language and proper tonality is so crucial to how you are to be perceived by another humanHow important honesty can be in intimate relationships instead of telling your partner what you think they want to hearHow focusing on how your words come across can make it easier to build the trust needed to be honest with your partnerDeane's advice for owning and running a business with your spouseHow setting expectations is in fact setting yourself up for successDeane's best advice to someone with ADHD who has to focus to present to othersWhy being authentic and being your true self is so important FAVORITE QUOTE: “We all do training. In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down USC baseball's big series win against No. 17 Oregon despite Friday starter Tyler Stromsborg initially being pushed back to Sunday and then ultimately being scratched altogether. But before the guys discuss the Trojans to rallying for a big Pac-12 series win against Oregon to breathe a little life back into their postseason hopes, a special guest joins the podcast. USC hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett comes on the Dedeaux Download to talk about how the Trojans were able to bounce back after struggling at Washington last weekend and losing a pair of midweek games for their longest losing streak of the season (five games). Jewett also talks a lot about the Trojans' hitting philosophy of getting back to the midline and what type of adjustments they do and do not make in two-strike and/or two-out situations. He breaks down how USC was able to handle a stretch where it got a lot of hits but struggled to come through with the clutch hits with runners on base. After a hearty conversation with Jewett, Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the last two weeks of play, including looking at where the 27-20-1 Trojans stand in the Pac-12, sitting in third place with two regular-season weekends remaining. They also look at USC's national RPI and what the Trojans chances of making the NCAA tournament are looking like. Shotgun and Jack also discuss the upcoming week with the Trojans taking on Cal State Bakersfield at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday before welcoming in Arizona State for a crucial weekend series for both teams..
