When a dry-goods robbery in a river town leaves one clerk shot dead and two thieves drowned, a down-at-heel Ravenmill private eye is called in to put a name to the lone survivor — a soft-spoken scholar who keeps walking out of cages no man should be able to open.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-mancagescouldntholdTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: This episode is inspired by the case of Edward H. Rulloff (1819–1871), a Canadian-born polymath who lived as both a respected scholar and a career criminal. A doctor, lawyer, schoolmaster, photographer, inventor, and self-taught philologist, Rulloff devoted his life to a language manuscript he believed would revolutionize the field — work he financed through theft and largely wrote in prison cells. In 1844 his wife, Harriet Schutt, and their infant daughter, Priscilla, vanished from Lansing, New York. No bodies were ever found despite repeated dragging of Cayuga Lake, and Rulloff was convicted of abduction rather than murder, serving ten years in Auburn Prison. A later murder conviction was overturned on appeal, and he was ultimately freed. He moved to New York City, where he and his associates Albert Jarvis and Billy Dexter robbed stores, specializing in hard-to-trace sewing silk. On August 17, 1870, the three men broke into Halbert's dry goods store in Binghamton, New York. A clerk and night watchman, Fred Merrick, was shot dead during the struggle. Jarvis and Dexter drowned in the Chenango River while fleeing; Rulloff was captured after giving false names and hiding in a farm outhouse. He was recognized as the long-suspected Lansing killer, tried for Merrick's murder, and convicted of first-degree murder. His case drew national debate — Horace Greeley argued his intellect was too valuable to waste, while Mark Twain mocked the sentiment in a satirical letter to the Tribune. Rulloff was hanged on May 18, 1871. Before his execution he confessed to killing his wife with a medicine pestle but never admitted to harming his daughter, who some believed survived and was raised by his brother. His body was displayed, a death mask was made, and his head was kept for study; his brain remains part of the Wilder Brain Collection at Cornell University to this day.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. Habitat Podcast #388 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Cory Franceus and Matt Zahl! We discuss: Tree tubes are easy, but cages may protect better long-term. Apple trees can struggle when tubes hold leaf debris. Mouse guards help prevent young trees from being girdled. Weak trunks can get damaged after tubes come off. Fruit trees need yearly maintenance, not just planting. Autumn olive can explode fast after sunlight hits the ground. Some autumn olive is worth keeping if it creates bedding. Spring is the time to clean up access and shooting lanes. Food plots help create social activity, not just food. Earlier fall planting may help beat late-summer drought. And So Much More! "Black leather jacket."   Chatter rolls with Claude, David, Torie, and icon James Grady. David did indeed cry at his son's graduation, and Torie lived Book Fair-palooza in Gaithersburg and Oyster Bay.  Miami literary legend Mitchell Kaplan of Books & Books joined in to nominate Chantel Acevedo for "The Pitch."   Her new book "Cages" is out in June.  Crossing Cuba, London, and Miami, it reveals themes of love, exile, and identity.  Jim shares back stories about Robert Redford and the incentive to write his latest, "Shadows on Sidewalks."  As Bob Dylan said, " sex and politics and murder is the way to go if you want to get people's attention."  Grady will get lots of attention with "Shadows," yet another reason The Washington Post compared his writing to George Orwell and Bob Dylan.

Today, I'm exploring the power of identity and how it shapes us, anchors us, and sometimes quietly begins to confine us. Even the identities that are good and meaningful can become cages when we cling to them too tightly or start to outgrow the version of ourselves they were built around. In this episode, I unpack how to recognize when an identity is supporting you versus trapping you, the questions worth asking when everything starts to feel different, and the very real grief that can come with letting an old version of yourself go.Podcast Episode Highlights:Everything feels differentMy huge identity shifts over timeIdentities can be good AND bad (aka in the grey)Identities can become cages BECAUSE they are goodQuestions to ask yourself to see if your identity is helping you or notHow to know when your identity is trapping youThe grief connected to losing your identityFinal thoughts on releasing identitiesResources Mentioned in This Podcast Episode:Learn more about Meal Craft here: https://mealcraftmethod.com/--> Use the code PODCAST for a $15 off discount on Meal CraftEarlier podcast episode I mentioned today: Season 18: Episode 6: The Magic of Not BelongingOTHER HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR YOUR HOMESTEAD:Sign up for weekly musings from my homestead: https://jillwinger.substack.com/Get my free homesteading tutorials & recipes here: www.theprairiehomestead.comJill on Instagram: @jill.wingerJill on Facebook: http://facebook.com/theprairiehomesteadApply to be a guest on the Old-Fashioned on Purpose podcast: https://www.theprairiehomestead.com/podcast-guest-applicationDid you enjoy listening to this episode? I learned the craziest life lesson this week, and I cannot believe it took me 44 years on the planet to actually realize this. I'm so excited to share it because I think, in some way, it applies to everybody in at least one area of life. For me, this shift came through organization. I've always told myself that I'm a creative person. I'm always building things, creating things, and planning adventures, so I'm not organized. I'm creative, not structured. But here's what I realized: my comfort zone was actually a cage I put myself in without even realizing it. And the wildest part is this: in a very short period of time, you can completely change how you see yourself. You don't have to get to the finish line. You just have to start doing the things that person would do. For me, that looked like purging and organizing my house in a completely different way, in the way an organized person would. And as I did that, I started to change my identity. I began to feel like an organized person, even though I'm still far from finishing the project. This applies to so many areas of life: getting healthy, starting something new, exercising, getting a better job, improving communication. Whatever it is for you, the question becomes this: are you labeling yourself in a way that's actually a cage, just because it feels comfortable? It's incredibly self-limiting. But the best part is how quickly you can flip it. I can't even believe how different I feel today compared to just one week ago in this one area of my life. And that shift spills into everything else. You feel more motivated, more inspired, and more aligned with the person you want to be. Today, we're diving into the ways we put ourselves in cages without realizing it, and how simple it is to flip the script and redefine yourself. With the internet and social media, we can learn how to do almost anything for free. So why can't we become more organized, more fit, more capable, or better in any area we choose? Think about the labels we casually accept: I'm always late. I'm a hot mess in the morning. I could never get a better job. I'm out of shape. I'm terrible at going to bed on time. I'm bad at remembering names. I'm a nagging wife. Those "truths" are often just cages. Cages we built, and then lived inside, without ever questioning them. And the wildest part? They feel comfortable. Because once you decide, "This is just who I am," you stop challenging it. You stop trying to change. You stop expecting more from yourself. That's where it becomes limiting. The shift that changed everything for me was simple. I didn't become organized overnight. My house isn't perfect. I'm nowhere near the finish line. But I started acting like an organized person. I purged differently. I created systems. I focused on finishing small areas instead of jumping around. I made decisions faster. Most importantly, I started asking myself, "What would an organized person do right now?" And then I did that. Within days, not months or years, I started to feel like an organized person. That's what blew my mind. We tend to think we need results before we can claim an identity. I'll feel organized when my house is done. I'll feel fit when I lose the weight. I'll feel confident when I reach the goal. But it's actually the opposite. Identity doesn't come from the finish line. It comes from repeated actions. If you consistently do what that type of person would do, you become that person, even if you're still in the middle of the process. So where are you labeling yourself? I'm not disciplined. I'm bad with money. I'm not athletic. I'm awkward socially. I'm not good at following through. What if those aren't truths, but just stories you've repeated long enough that they feel real? And even deeper, what if they're comfortable? Because labels remove responsibility. If "I'm just not organized," then I don't have to try. If "I'm not a workout person," then I don't have to push myself. It gives you an out, but it also keeps you stuck. Here's how you break out of the cage. You don't need a full life overhaul. You don't need a complicated plan. You don't need to wait for motivation. You just need to start doing what that version of you would do. Ask yourself: What would a healthy person do today? What would a confident person say right now? What would an organized person do with this space? What would the highest-performing version of me choose in this moment? Then do that one thing. Not perfectly. Not forever. Just right now. What surprised me most is how fast this works. Your brain starts collecting evidence immediately. You organize one drawer, that's evidence. You go for one walk, that's evidence. You follow through on one promise, that's evidence. And your identity starts catching up to your actions. You stop feeling like you're pretending. You start feeling like, "This is actually who I am now." And it doesn't stop there. When you shift in one area, it spills into everything. When I started feeling organized, I felt more clear, more in control, and more capable. That energy showed up in my work, my parenting, my routines, and my mindset. Because you start to trust yourself. And when you trust yourself, everything changes. So here's the question to sit with: Where have you put yourself in a cage without realizing it? And what would it look like to step out of it today? Not perfectly. Not completely. Just with one action. Here's your challenge: Pick one area, just one. For the next seven days, stop labeling yourself. Instead, start acting like the person you want to become. You don't need permission. You don't need a new plan. You just need to decide, "I'm not staying in this cage anymore." I cannot believe how different I feel today than I did one week ago. Nothing in my external world is fully done. But internally, everything has shifted. And that's available to you too, faster than you think.

A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger Gaines-Cirelli with Foundry UMC April 5,2026. “Ignite the Light” series. Easter Sunday.              Text: Matthew 28:1-10   I remember lying on the floor of our living room when I was a child. Not doing anything in particular—just stretched out on the blue shag carpet, near my dad's chair. And I remember noticing something I had never seen before. There was a beam of light coming through the window…and in it these tiny particles floating, moving, shimmering. Just… dancing. I didn't have a name for it.It didn't occur to me that it was dust, or dirt, or anything undesirable. It felt like magic. Like something had always been there—but I had never seen it before. And suddenly, because of the light, I could. The light didn't create it. It revealed it. It held it before my eyes. And I remember just lying there…watching. And I think about that sometimes—the way light reveals what we couldn't see before. The way it catches our attention… draws our eye… Think about how light breaks through clouds… through a canopy of trees… How light refracts through water to make rainbows. How light finds its way through windows—or even cracks in walls— sending a beam of light in which you can see dust dance. It's beautiful. It's delicate. And yet—it is so powerful. Because light finds its way in. It beckons. It invites. And if you follow it, it will show you more than you expected to see. I think about that moment in The Lord of the Rings when Galadriel gives Frodo a small vial of light and says: “May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.” A fragile thing. A small thing. And yet—enough to guide him when everything else fails. And it seems to me that Easter—the reality of it, the story of it, the promise of it—is like that gift. But not small. Not contained. Easter is that kind of light magnified beyond measure. Because there are moments in our lives, in the life of a nation, in the life of the world when it feels like all the lights have gone out. When truth feels buried. When cruelty seems to spread like a virus. When violence feels pervasive. When fear and despair run in packs claiming more and more ground. And into that kind of world, Matthew tells us, the light breaks in. And when it does, it's not only beautiful. It's disruptive. The earth shakes. An angel descends. A stone is rolled away—not to let Jesus out—but to let the light in. What was sealed is opened. What was guarded is broken through. What was declared final is no longer final, not just for one life, but for life itself. Because Easter is not consolation after tragedy. It is God interrupting the apparent finality of death, empire, and violence—and revealing how empty their power really is. And Matthew tells the story in a way that makes it unmistakable. This is not a private miracle. This is a public reversal. The guards—sent by empire to secure the tomb—become like dead men. And the one who was dead—executed, sealed, silenced—is alive. Those who represent control collapse. The one who was crushed rises. The whole thing turns upside down. And if you've been paying attention, you realize—this is how it's been all along. Herod tries to kill the child. The child lives. The powerful condemn the innocent.Truth refuses to stay buried. Rome executes the Messiah. And God reverses the verdict. Because resurrection is God saying: The systems that declared this death final—were wrong. And then the disruption continues as God entrusts this breaking news to women, to those who were grieving and heartbroken, those whose testimony would not be trusted in the world. These women, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary become the first to hear, the first to see, the first to carry the truth that overturns the world. And they leave the tomb—Matthew says—with fear and great joy. Both. Because the world has not suddenly become safe. The empire is still in power. The cross is still fresh. The risk is still real. And yet something has happened that cannot be undone. And so they run. Not because they understand everything, but because they have seen enough light to start moving. And as they go, Jesus meets them. On the road. And he says, “Greetings”—a word that also means: Rejoice. Not as a command to feel something—but as an invitation to step further into what God has done. Because the news they are carrying is not just that the tomb is empty. It is that the light has broken in—and nothing will ever be the same. And Jesus meets them right there on the road to confirm it. To embody it. To send them on. Rejoice. Even now. Even here. And I think about how hard that may be for us to hear. Because the news we encounter most lights up our phones at all hours. It is breaking, urgent, relentless—and almost always…heavy. Another act of violence. Another abuse of power.Another reminder of how much is still broken. And it can start to feel like that is the truest story— like that's the world we live in—like nothing really changes. But what the women are carrying—running with, breathless—is a different kind of breaking news. Not news that traps us in fear. But news that breaks something open. That calls for rejoicing. Because something has broken. Death—which seemed final—is not. The seal—which seemed permanent—is not. The power—that seemed untouchable—is not. And when something like that shifts—when what we thought was final isn't—it creates a crack in the story we've been living inside. And once there's a crack—the light starts to get in. And what breaks in…is also what breaks us open. Because not all breaking is destruction. Some breaking is liberation. A seed has to break for new life to grow.Light has to break to become color. The sky has to break open for rain to fall.Sometimes what we call breaking is the beginning of mending. Because there are things in this world—and in us—that hold life captive. Cages we didn't build but learned how to live inside. Systems that confine and then convince us they are necessary. Stories that tell us this is just the way things are, this is just the way we are. This is just the way I am. But Easter reveals a different kind of power. Not domination. Not control. A power that gently beckons us toward life—and breaks open whatever keeps that life contained. The same light that draws us in… is the power that sets us free. The stone is rolled away. The seal is broken. The grip of death is broken. And when that happens—the cages don't hold the same way anymore. It's like something loosens—not all at once, but enough to change what's possible. The poet Hafiz puts it this way: The small man builds cages for everyone he knows. While the sage who has to duck his head when the moon is low, keeps dropping keys all night long for the beautiful, rowdy prisoners. And that's what resurrection feels like. Not everything suddenly fixed—but keys appearing. Openings where there were none. A loosening of what we thought would hold forever. Because the one they thought they had broken and banished from this world—breaks in. Not untouched. Not unmarked. But bearing the wounds. Carrying the scars and yet somehow making all things whole. Because God does not erase brokenness. God transfigures it. The light doesn't avoid the cracks. It comes through them. Like that beam of light in a living room long ago finding its way in…holding something before our eyes that we didn't even know was there. And this—this is the breaking news: The crucified one is alive. And those sent to guard the tomb are like dead men. The verdict has been reversed. Death has lost its claim. Empire has lost its certainty. Violence has lost its final word. And life—deeper than death—is rising. // And that means whatever feels sealed is not final. Whatever feels broken is not beyond mending. Whatever feels dark is not beyond the reach of light. Because Easter is the day God in Christ breaks the power of canceled sin and sets the prisoner free… breaks the power of death and cruelty… breaks the lie that this is just the way things have to be… and breaks into confusion and fear with hope and solidarity. Easter is the day the light of Christ began to beckon us— to see what—before—we could not see… and to live like it's real. // Like the stone has already been rolled away. Like the seal has already been broken. Like the cages don't hold the same way anymore. Like even now—even here—the light is finding its way in. Like even the smallest beam can change what we see. Like… even the dust… can begin to dance. And the light— still— breaks in.

Since the beginning of time, girls and women have been split into two impossible categories and identities: the Good Girl  and the Bad Girl. The "good girl" - she's obedient, self-sacrificing, and pleasing and the "bad girl" - she's rebellious, outspoken, risky, and “too much.” Me, Indie, I was the "Bad Girl." However, most women carry both inside of us, but we naturally, and sometimes forcefully, lean more into one or the other depending on who we are at our core and the expectations of our environments. They both come with their own set of stigmas, shame, and judgement, so we actually never win when we stay in this confines of these expectations. This lesson explores how these inner identities are formed through natural propensity, family expectations and dynamics, experiences, culture, religion, relationships, and survival; how they silently shape our choices in love, work, self-worth, and so much more. We'll also discuss how we break out of these CAGES and finally get free!Let's get into it!

Forward Radio's proud community partner, the Greater Louisville Sierra Club (https://sierraclub.org/kentucky)organized this February program, focused on Central Appalachia as a central site of mass incarceration. Called "Cages in the Coalfields: Development, Criminalization, and Incarceration in Central Appalachia," it was held Feb 17, 2026 at 7:00pm at Crescent Hill Community Ministries (150 State St.) Central Appalachia is home to 16 prisons; there are 8 prisons alone in Eastern Kentucky, where full and overcrowded jails extend the expansive carceral geography to the local level. While these institutions reflect our national and state investment in criminalization and punitive sentencing policies, they also serve as rural development projects bound in various ways to the decline of coal. From calls for rural jobs in corrections to prisons built on mountaintop removal sites to jails as revenue strategies, the carceral expansion in the region must be understood as a response to multiple crises. This talk, by justice studies scholar and Sierra Club Executive Committee member Judah Schept, examines both the crises and the ways that prisons and jails have responded, as well as the work of the "Building Community Not Prisons" coalition to stop the construction of FCI Letcher (Federal Correctional Institution), the newest prison planned for the region. Judah Schept is a Professor in the School of Justice Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. He is the author of Coal, Cages, Crisis: The Rise of the Prison Economy in Central Appalachia (New York University Press, 2022) and Progressive Punishment: Job Loss, Jail Growth, and the Neoliberal Logic of Carceral Expansion (New York University Press, 2015). He is co-editor of The Jail is Everywhere: Fighting the New Geography of Mass Incarceration (Verso Books, 2024). On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! On October 21, 1836, crowds lined the docks of Saint John, New Brunswick, to watch the steamship Royal Tar depart for Portland, Maine - this time carrying an entire circus. Cages filled with exotic birds, snakes, lions and a tiger rolled on board, along with horses, camels and the star attraction: Mogul, a massive Asian elephant, who took his place on the upper deck. Four days later, after battling fierce storms, the ship caught fire, killing many on board. In desperation, some animals were forced into the icy waters of Penobscot Bay, while others perished in their cages. My guest is Jane Parks Gardner, author of The Wreck of the Circus Ship Royal Tar: Tragedy in Penobscot Bay. She shares details on the disaster, and its impact on Maine's maritime history. Angelo has planted 6,000 saplings, creating edge and cover for deer movement on his property. He emphasizes the importance of creating diverse habitats for wildlife, not just pristine landscapes. Angelo enjoys sharing his land management experiences and learning from others in the community. He harvested a kudu and other animals on his honeymoon in South Africa, creating lasting memories. Angelo prioritizes camaraderie and conservation in his hunting pursuits, valuing experiences over kills. And So Much More!
