Jesse Howe is the Assistant Director of the Coastal Conservation Association, Maryland (CCA) whose purpose is to advise and educate the public on the conservation of our marine resources. They seek to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public. One of the main projects CCA does are living reefs, which are reef balls that they create in the Chesapeake Bay to provide important habitat for oysters and other estuarine critters and they are valued in both fresh and Bay waters. And since the 1700's oyster populations have seen dramatic decline due to over-harvesting, disease, habitat loss and more and the Bay has really seen the effects of that as oysters are natural filters. Therefore the reef balls offer a place for oysters to come back to the Bay and help maintain healthy waters and the ecosystem. With Jesse we talk about why Maryland's coastline is ecologically significant, the goals of the Living Reefs, how they get the community involved, citizen science, and how to support their work. David Cresson, Director of the Louisiana chapter of Coastal Conservation Association, drops on by to discuss the newest developments in the Menhaden "Pogy" boat industry, a bit of a recap of the Menhaden industry and what issues derive from it, recent proposed regulations, the coastal erosion associated with these boats, and the reporting of these issues.
What are Pogey's? How is the Pogey Industry destroying our Coast, way of life, environment and possibly the future of Louisiana? David with the Coastal Conservation Association in Louisiana talks about how the Pogey industry is basically in my words "clear cutting or strip mining" our shores of shrimp, redfish, and other important species to our eco system. While the companies are operating legally under Louisiana law, it is not responsible for our coast the way the laws allow it. Other states don't allow it, so why is Louisiana. Let's change this to save recreational and commercial fishing in Louisiana.

CCA California is a non-profit association and advocate for anglers all around America. In California specifically they help fight for the recreation of all anglers and the conservation of our fisheries through providing education, habitat and access. Darren and Chris host the podcast for CCA California and have years of experience on the water, from deck handing to fishing all around California. Not only are they great fishermen but they appreciate and participate in many outdoor activities throughout California. This podcast is different from most, because we all host podcast, this is a round table conversation about conservation, participation, the adventure of fishing and why we do what we do, and why we fight for what we love. In many ways, I, personally got to share more of my story and my vision for Sagebrush Wisdom, why they give lots of wisdom for anyone interested in fishing in California. I was honored to podcast with them, and looks forward to podcasting again with both of them in the future. CCA is a membership based association that helps conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public. What CCA has done done for anglers in California Continue to fight against fishing tackle and lead bans Fought to keep Bluefin from becoming listed as an Endangered Species Continue to fight against destructive fishing gear that hurts our resources Protect against unfair fishing regulations Continue to support and expand finfish hatchery programs Continue to fight for artificial and restoration reefs Support programs to increase fishing opportunities To become a member yourself please visit https://ccacalifornia.org/ your donation will help continue fishing in California for generations to come.

Rufus Wakeman has been a friend before I ever met him. His legacy precedes his presence. He's big, boisterous and lovable, with the ability to out fish the best of them. We traveled to the Amazon eons ago and was awarded with a trip of a lifetime accentuated by my new found friend! His passion for fishing took him around the world and into the fishes' most demanding and far reaching homes. He's held numerous highly cherished world records including a 57 pound dolphin on 16 pound tippet. He also, with utter amazement, caught 11 billfish species on fly in one year. He was one species short of catching all 12 billfish species in one year! The elusive swordfish denied his grand slam dream. He built the River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp on the Saint Lucie River where his family experienced first hand the despicable Lake Okeechobee algae discharges, which over the years has decimated the river's ability to grow healthy grass essential to holding game fish. He's given generously to many conservation based organizations and is the President of the Coastal Conservation Association of Martin County, FL. He is one of the most important people in our sport today and his voice needs to be heard! We hope you enjoy his riveting story... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ATTENTION: SOME OF THE THINGS DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST MAY NOT BE ACCURATE AS THIS PODCAST WAS RECORDED ON 2/12/22 AND A LOT HAS CHANGED (IN REGARD TO SB2508) SINCE THIS RECORDING. As a native Floridian, Chad Crawford has always loved his home state, and he’s made it his mission to share it with the world. He’s often called Florida’s Ambassador for this very reason. Emmy® award-winning how to Do florida with Chad Crawford began as a way to combine Chad’s passions – filmmaking, Florida, and literally anything outdoors – but has evolved into a passion project. The more he travels the state, meeting people whose livelihood is the land (and water), the more aware he has become of the issues facing Florida – namely the water crisis. He has worked alongside Florida Fish and Wildlife, Coastal Conservation Association, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Agriculture, Everglades Foundation, Captains for Clean Water, and author Richard Louv in directed efforts to help preserve Florida’s natural resources, and to communicate how we can all be part of solving the environmental problems the state is facing today.

Just shy of 31 Mike has already accomplished so much for Florida's fisheries, waterways and estuaries. He represents the future for not only Florida's Coastal Conservation efforts, but also has become an exemplary representative of the Sunshine State itself. In true fashion of any great leader Mike Lambrechts believes that the future is now. Being an entrepreneurial owner and partner of multiple businesses shouldn't leave much time for being the President of The Coastal Conservation Association's (CCA) Broward Chapter, but Mike has somehow found a way to do the job and flourish in his role. In 2012 Oregon and Washington agreed to a plan that would get gillnets out of the main stem of the Columbia River by 2017. That has not yet happened and on February 14th the Washington and Oregon Departments of Fish and Wildlife announced salmon allocations to recreational and commercial anglers for 2020 which includes plans for a commercial gillnet fishery on main stem of the Lower Columbia River this summer. The Coastal Conservation Association says this new rule opens the door to further use of gillnets, to include gillnetting on the main stem of the Columbia for Spring Chinook. We get two perspectives about all of this. Bill Tweit with the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife gives the perspective from the point of view of Washington State and after that, Nello Picinich, Executive Director of the Coastal Conservation Association in Washington, shares his point of view about this.
