Radiant Rebellion is an investigation into how we can reclaim aging, cultivate joy, and resist ageism. As Karen says, internalized ageism--bias against our future selves--is not our only option; we can write a different story of aging than the one we've been handed. In this conversation we'll dive into all the ways we get wrapped up in ageism without even realizing it, and how, exactly, to move forward. Not for Karen Walrond, whose daughter Alex just graduated and, this fall, will be heading from the family's home in Texas to art school in Chicago. As the parents of an only child, Karen and her husband Marcus are facing down an empty nest, and honestly...they are feeling pretty good about it. Karen and Meagan (whose son Will is also heading some distance away in August) have a chat about what the college-selection process looked like in each of their homes and what they expect they'll feel when the kids actually head off, as well as reminisce about their own college days and share some things they hope their kids will remember about this time of life. We asked listeners, friends and readers at Single Mom Nation to share what they lost in divorce. A hundred comments piled up in an hour, creating a profound list of Christmas ornaments to childhood photos, cars and homes to friends, dignity and mental wellness. That inventory was eerily similar to the overwhelming mountain of possessions outside the home of Karen Walrond, author, speaker, photographer and Hurricane Harvey survivor. Karen joins Jessica talk about why the little stuff matters so much to us, and to connect the great losses and even greater lessons of evacuating and recovering from a natural disaster – and divorce. Karen’s incredible, inspirational work is at home on Chookooloonks, her Make Light podcast is here and her books are here.
