It's a relevant topic for our stress-filled times of economic and political upheaval, and for our every day “hurry hurry” lifestyle, so the topic seemed apt. I've faced burnout in my past, and I talk about some of that here as we unpack the stress cycle and what to do when you're stuck in that space. I haven't talked much about this before, so this is a new experience for me. I hope you'll find this helpful, and will pick up this book by the Nagoski sisters, “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle.” They go into the science and the “how to” of restoration in much more detail than I do here.I hope you've subscribed to us wherever you get your podcasts; please, share my work widely, give us a review or a drop us a few stars, it really does help. Could podcasts help decide the election? Here we are in the final days before the most consequential Presidential Election of our lives.Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are criss-crossing the battleground states – and the podcast studios!Sure, we've got wall-to-wall TV and radio ads as always. My wife and I have YouTube TV as our cable provider -the ads are also there, and on traditional YouTube, where we spend a fair amount of time as well. But as Trump and Harris make their closing arguments to Americans, they've found a new arena this cycle– podcasts. And with podcasts having pretty well-defined audiences, even the largest ones, both candidates are staying in their respective lanes. No matter how you slice it, 45% of the country's going to vote for Harris, and 45% is going to vote for Trump. Now while both would love to reach that 10% in the middle, they are also trying to drive turnout among their predicted supporters. Harris has been on one of the top podcasts consumed by females, Call Her Daddy, to talk about reproductive rights. She's also been on All The Smoke, with former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Club Shay Shay with former NFL player turned analyst Shannon Sharpe, and Unlocking Us with Brene Brown. For Trump's part, he's gone on the world's biggest podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, as well as Barstool Sports' Bussin With The Boys, and the comedy Podcast Flagrant. Now, I'm not saying that podcasts are GOING to decide the election, but their influence and reach are certainly being considered by both campaigns. Yes, our media landscape is split among ideological lines, and podcasts are no exception. But media as a whole is now so fragmented. Gone are the days were network news shows were the end-all be-all of media reach. You've got to meet your audience – and your potential voters – where they are. And they're listening to – and watching podcasts. Lata! Find jag on social media @JAGinDetroit or online at JAGinDetroit.com

Ali Abu Awwad is hard to summarize. He grew up with a mother in the PLO, and served jail time for his role in the resistance during the First Palestinian Intifada. In an Israeli prison, Ali learned the power of nonviolence when he and his mother went on hunger strike to see each other. After his brother was killed by Israeli soldiers, his family met with a group of bereaved Jewish parents. Awwad says witnessing the shared humanity of Palestinian and Israeli mourners "turned his world upside down." Awwad has been working as a peacebuilder since 2002, and has given talks around Israel, Palestine, and the world. His current work is leading Taghyeer, a Palestinian movement —"to take nonviolent responsibility for self-development and forging a path to end occupation." Awwad says he founded Taghyeer, a "DNA Palestinian movement" to focus on the "homework" needed to lay the foundation for true Palestinian self-governance and an end to Israeli military occupation. In this conversation, Awwad gives us an intimate view of his own inner transformation, and an inside look at Palestinian identity and self-determination. Today on AI for the Rest of Us, we're talking about the ways that AI is being used—or might be used—to help make high-stakes decisions about all aspects of our lives—from who gets hired for a job—to what interest rates people get on loans—to whether or not someone who's been convicted of a crime gets parole. Are AI systems better than humans at making these decisions? Why is it so tempting to give up our decision-making authority to machines? And what can we do to make sure these systems are fair and unbiased?Craig Watkins is a professor in the Moody College of Communications at UT Austin who's been wrestling with these questions.Watkins is executive director of the IC2 Institute and a principal investigator with Good Systems, a university-funded initiative that supports multi-disciplinary explorations of the technical, social, and ethical implications of artificial intelligence.Dig DeeperVideo: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Racial Justice, S. IntroductionIn this episode, we delve into the topic of apologizing effectively. We'll reference key insights from "The 5 Love Languages for Men" by Gary Chapman and outline the structure of our discussion, covering the essential points from the book, additional insights, and personal anecdotes.Discussion PointsWe begin with an overview of the importance of apologies in relationships, highlighting their role in maintaining and repairing connections. We also mention Brene Brown's podcast "Unlocking Us" and Dr. Harriet Lerner's book "Why Won't You Apologize?" as valuable resources for understanding the nuances of apologizing. We discuss the idea that "The man who apologizes for everything and the man who apologizes for nothing share the same weakness." This highlights the need for balance in offering apologies and avoiding extremes.Next, we introduce the concept of the five apology languages: expressing regret, accepting responsibility, making restitution, genuine repentance, and requesting forgiveness. We then provide a detailed breakdown of each apology language. Expressing Regret emphasizes the importance of specificity, such as the difference between saying "I'm sorry" and just "Sorry." Accepting Responsibility focuses on acknowledging one's wrong actions and understanding the role of intent versus impact. We provide example apologies to illustrate these points. Making Restitution involves offering to make amends, like asking, "What can I do to make it right?" Genuine Repentance shows a commitment to change by developing systems to avoid repeating mistakes. Requesting Forgiveness involves asking for forgiveness as a way to heal relationships, for example, "I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me."Charles and Dan share personal experiences with apologies, discussing common mistakes and how to avoid them. They stress the importance of aligning apologies with personal values to ensure sincerity.Key TakeawaysThe key takeaways from this discussion are that sincerity in apologies is crucial and understanding and utilizing apology languages can significantly strengthen relationships. Apologies should address not only the act but also the impact on the other person.ConclusionWe conclude by recapping the importance of effective apologies and encouraging listeners to take the "Five Apology Languages" quiz to better understand their own and their partners' apology preferences. Finally, we tease the topic for the next episode, leaving listeners with something to look forward to.Support the Show.

As a child, I counted the days until my next birthday. Most of us did, tired of hearing “you're not old enough to do that.”Then we hit a certain age, and all we want to do is roll back the clock. Pursue youth at all costs. Why is that?Who decided that young is good and old is bad? Why have we internalized it to our own detriment? And how do we reclaim aging as a positive force in our lives? My guest this week answers those questions and more in her brilliant new book, Radiant Rebellion: Reclaim Aging, Practice Joy, and Raise a Little Hell.“ And she does it based on research.A Familiar VoiceKaren Walrond is familiar to the Our Voices Matter community. "In 2020, with all the civil unrest, we reached a tipping point of there being more guns than people." In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk all things guns with Mennonite pastor, adrenaline junkie, and "aspiring pacifist" Matthew Yoder. We discuss how the stories we tell ourselves about power, privilege, and politics all affect gun sales. This is a lengthy episode that is only part one of a two-part series. - What does it mean to Live Big? - How does creating connect to living big — and what is creativity all about (that most people do not understand or appreciate, or feel intimidated about)? - How we can all be powerful creators of the lives we want to live. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Rochelle Seltzer discuss:Why lawyers need creativity. What does it mean to Live Big?How creativity connects to living big.Setting boundaries with kindness. Key Takeaways:We all are filled with creativity - but most of it goes untapped and underutilized. When you've tapped into your creativity, you're excited about trying new things, making bolder moves, and excited about expressing yourself. Try something that you've never done before. Do something to inspire you. You need to understand what it is that you want. What is your personal why? What would you do if you were bolder? "When you're in that state of being lit up and feeling inspired, the people around you feel that energy. It will impact everybody - it will impact colleagues, it will impact the people that support you in your role, it will impact your clients. It just elevates everything." — Rochelle Seltzer Get a free copy of Steve's book “Sales-Free Selling” here: www.fretzin.com/sales-free-selling Thank you to our Sponsors!Overture: https://overture.law/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Get Visible: https://www.getvisible.com/ Episode References: Under the Influence Podcast - https://terryoreilly.ca/undertheinfluence/Unlocking Us with Brené Brown - https://brenebrown.com/podcast-show/unlocking-us/ About Rochelle Seltzer: Rochelle Seltzer is a Creative Core Coach, a dynamic speaker, and the author of the highly acclaimed book, Live Big: A Manifesto for a Creative Life. All links - linktr.ee/barbarafaison Week 14 - What New Things Are You Doing? How are you doing? I must say, I was energized and exhausted after last week's VO Atlanta conference where I was in person with over 800 people. That's of a lot of peopling... Yes, I do believe that is a well know made up word. My version of it is... being around people and having to be engaged. In my earlier decades, I loved being out and about so much that I would have changes of clothes in my car and I would be ready for an impromptu salsa dancing outing or meeting up with friends. You might be thinking... Barbara, you are an extrovert. Yes, that can be true and I also have become more of a selectively social extrovert. I found this happening before the pandemic. I enjoy people AND I also enjoy being alone or at home. I call this selective extrovertness, yes, another made up word. we can do that now, it's 2023! I knew I would need to do something to get myself back into balance after 4 days of some serious peopling. So I scheduled my second Float session at True Rest Float Spa. What is a Float Spa? Well, you can find out more here . I am not paid to promote them, I just like trying new things. Imagine being in a pod, that looks like something from outer space or a big white egg, in salt water. The amount of salt and solution allows you to float effortlessly. Inside the pod you can have music pumped in or go for silence (my choice) and you can have a light on or off (my choice) to allow your senses to be deprived of stimulation. My session was for an hour and afterward I was offered tea, water and oxygen (free for the first session, $10 for the second session). Being deprived of all stimulation was what I was looking for, and it was lovely. In December they had a two floats for the price of one special and I went for my first float on December 20th. I know the first time I do something I can be so in my head about what to expect that I may not be fully engaged. I remembered listening to Brene Brown, author and researcher talk about FFT's - Freaking (EFFing) First Times on her podcast, Unlocking Us. She talked about giving ourselves grace when we try new things for the first time. I gave myself grace through the float and I am sure that was I why I got more than one float session. I knew the first time I would REALLY be in my HEAD about what to expect. The second time I was able to relax more in my session. I knew what to expect and was able to be more present. As I floated in the pod, I practiced my breathing and I think I took a nap. It was just what my nervous system needed to reset deeper that just meditation. Will I float again? Possibly. They have packages for you to schedule regular floating sessions if you desire. Last week I knew I needed something to really shift my energy to get back to my regular routines. The float session was just what I needed and I'm grateful to myself for being willing to try new experiences. To see a quick video of my pictures click here. When we do new things our brain becomes stimulated and we can become more creative and less fearful. What's something new you've tried? Welcome back to RTL the Podcast! CW - I talk about depression and anxiety and you may find this triggering. If I had recorded this episode in late 2022 like I had planned, I would have called it “The Year that Broke Me” but now, with the benefit of hindsight and a bit of time and space - I am declaring 2022 “The Year that Made Me.” In this honest conversation I share with you: The sensible, saccharine 2022 wrap-up social media post that I could have simply shared and left at that; My annual process of intention and goal setting; Why and how 2022 was such a hectic year; My experience with anxiety and depression; The background context to various factors that led to a challenging 2022; What happened in 2022; and My intentions for 2023. I hope you enjoy listening to this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities of where your legal career may take you. Today's episode is about friendship, identity, and grief. I talk about how society and culture are built for romantic love and we are all quite ill-prepared for the heartbreak of platonic, friendship love. I share some of my thoughts on friendship contracts: the unconscious signing of contracts when we first become friends with someone, and what that means as we grow and change as people. But most importantly, I vulnerably share how I'm in the thick of my own heartbreaking and confusing friendship pause* with one of my lifelong best friends. *my new definition because “friend breakup” sounds so heartbreaking and finite. Plus, we can't predict the future of our relationships so I'm choosing to use the gentle term “friend pause.”I took a quote from the queen Brené Brown's podcast, “Unlocking Us” called “Places We Go When the Heart is Open from Atlas of the Heart,” and you can find that episode here.I also referenced a piece from The Atlantic called “It's Your Friends Who Break You Heart,” which is well worth the read.Lastly, I am obsessed with Anderson Cooper's podcast “All There Is,” especially the episode with Stephen Colbert (one of my favourite humans). Be sure to check it out. Finally, if anything from this episode resonated with you, I would be so grateful if you shared on social media and sent to someone in your life. This week, after experiencing unexpected loss, Laura and Susan discuss the role of grief and friendship, and the bittersweet and inevitable intermixing of joy and heartbreak along this journey we call life. Inspired by the genius of Brene Brown, Karen Walrond and Susan Cain, Laura and Susan agree with the conclusion that our broken hearts connect us all. And as creators all we can hope to do is make works of profound sadness and beauty. Break our hearts. Use all of the pain. Like Marcus Aurelius said, “A blazing fire makes flame and brightness out of everything that is thrown into it”Make 2022 the year you go from dreaming about what you want to make, to making what you've been dreaming about!Learn more about The Spark File IGNITE here!

This week, Unlocking Us is going to Dare to Lead! Even before James Clear and I met, I knew this would be a two-part series. I just had so many questions for the author of Atomic Habits, which has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 50 languages. Not surprisingly, this turned out to be exactly the type of conversation I'd anticipated. In Part 1 of our series, we talk specifically about developing identity-based habits and how we can become the architects of those habits, not the victims of them. We also talk about the intersection of his work and mine, the collective stories we make up, and how our mindsets and our systems can set us up for success. It was so meaningful to finally meet James, to hear his story, and to take in his insights into how he developed such a deep understanding of the importance of consistency over intensity when it comes to forming habits that last. We discuss empathy, accountability, and the power of listening and believing (including a very real role play). We also dissect the differences between transactional leadership and transformational leadership and why courage is a prerequisite to lasting, meaningful change. Learn more about your ad choices.
