As a child, I counted the days until my next birthday. Most of us did, tired of hearing “you're not old enough to do that.”Then we hit a certain age, and all we want to do is roll back the clock. Pursue youth at all costs. Why is that?Who decided that young is good and old is bad? Why have we internalized it to our own detriment? And how do we reclaim aging as a positive force in our lives? My guest this week answers those questions and more in her brilliant new book, Radiant Rebellion: Reclaim Aging, Practice Joy, and Raise a Little Hell.“ And she does it based on research.A Familiar VoiceKaren Walrond is familiar to the Our Voices Matter community. The attorney turned leadership coach, turned activist and author has helped thousands around the world find purpose and meaning in their lives. She has shared her insight and wisdom on Brené Brown's Unlocking Us podcast, on the Oprah Winfrey Show , PBS, the Huffington Post and CNN.com.And lucky us, she has graced Our Voices Matter with her penetrating perspective in previous episodes where we discussed her book, The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How to Work for Change without Losing Your Joy.And another episode when her daughter, Alex, joined us in conversation. And now, this episode. Like a parent who is asked “which child is your favorite”, I'd give the safe answer – I love them all equally. But truth be told — this one is my favorite.LiberatingI found this conversation — and her book — to be liberating. When you listen, you'll understand what I mean.Ageism is real. It permeates every aspect of our lives, forcing others's unwanted perspectives on our value as humans. And there's a special brand of this reserved for women.Well, I don't know about you but I've had it. I'm done.I am reclaiming my aging.I urge you to do the same.Because our broken world needs all that each of us has to give, and that capacity doesn't end when we hit the arbitrary age of 65.Indeed, for many of us, it's just beginning.Would love to know how you feel about this topic. I'm not going to lie. I was much more prepared for puberty, pregnancy, motherhood, and even menopause than I was for aging. And you all know that's a big deal to say because we're largely unprepared for all the other phases of our lives, too. But the reality is, we're aging from the day we're born, and much of what we've internalized about aging - the fears, judgments, stereotypes - and even ‘symptoms' if you will - have much more to do with the culture of ageism we're steeped in from the time we're little - whether that's the ‘old hag witch' in the woods who eats children in fairy tales and movies, to the anti-aging creams that women are already now using in their 20s (and younger) thanks to an industry that instills in us that aging is ugly. My guest, Karen Walrond, is the author of Radiant Rebellion: Reclaim Aging, Practice Joy & Raise a Little Hell, an investigation in how we can resist ageism and live a light-filled life along the way. And - I don't say this often or lightly - this book has blown my mind. It was exactly the dose of vitality and fire I needed right now - a mind-shift on my own journey - of aging proudly and powerfully while I also navigate all that means in our culture, and in work that puts me front and center on video, in media. I truly believe every women over 20 in our culture should read this book, gift it, share it, talk about it, and then read it again. In this episode Karen and I discuss: The cultural beliefs, stereotypes, and fears that contribute to ageism How internalized ageism can affect women's self-perception and confidence as they age How to challenge ageist language and attitudes Embracing aging and reclaiming vitality can lead to a more joyful and fulfilling life. The role of the global anti-aging market in perpetuating ageism and sexism Variation in cultures on the perception of elderhood The importance of community and intergenerational relationships for well-being and a sense of purpose in the later years Listening to your body's cravings and embracing guilt-free eating The impact of alcohol on health and weight management How important it is to appreciate the wisdom and beauty of body changes Let's listen to the interview. And then, as my guest says, raise a little hell. Or as I'm saying, raise a lot of it! You'll see what I mean. Caleb and Adriele are joined by leadership coach, activist and attorney, Karen Walrond, whose new book, Radiant Rebellion: Reclaim Aging, Practice Joy, and Raise a Little Hell, is an investigation in how we can reclaim aging and live a light-filled life along the way. They talk about navigating ageism in the workplace, how marketing has damaged our ability to thoughtfully approach getting older, and how to not be biased against our future selves. Before that, Caleb and Adriele look at new research on CEOs' internal communication skills, more research on remote work being here to stay, and the new trend of “quiet cutting.” All that plus medicare spending in the U.S. has gone way down and studies showing overwhelming support for corporate diversity initiatives across racial, ideological, and generational lines. What are Karen's hopes and fears for Alex as she prepares for adulthood in an increasingly uncertain world?Karen is a badass, modern day renaissance woman whose new book, Radiant Rebellion, will be out later this year. The point of having conversations like this is two-fold: 1) to amplify the voices of Millennials and Gen Z who are often ignored, underestimated and misunderstood, and 2) to learn from each other and celebrate what connects us across generations.Three WordsEnvironment. Economy. Empathy. These 3 words play a prominent role in our conversation — as do three words I ask both Alex and Karen to share when thinking about the future. What are your three words?Whatever they are, my hope is that this conversation enlightens your perspective and encourages you to talk — and most important — listen — to those in your life of a different generation. There is so much for us to learn from each other. And together, we can tackle and solve the challenges that lie before us.Support the show

This week, after experiencing unexpected loss, Laura and Susan discuss the role of grief and friendship, and the bittersweet and inevitable intermixing of joy and heartbreak along this journey we call life. Inspired by the genius of Brene Brown, Karen Walrond and Susan Cain, Laura and Susan agree with the conclusion that our broken hearts connect us all. And as creators all we can hope to do is make works of profound sadness and beauty. Break our hearts. Use all of the pain. In this episode, I'm sitting across from my friend Karen Walrond and she's helping me access joy. You may remember Karen from a two-part podcast we did last year on her book The Lightmaker's Manifesto, which is all about working for change without losing your joy. And I literally just called her and said, “Will you be on the podcast this week, because I'm in such deep struggle and I can't access any joy? I feel guilty if I'm happy about something because the world is such a shit show right now and people are in so much pain.” If you're struggling with how to be fully connected in your life and feel joy and acknowledge beauty and also fight for the things that we need to fight for right now, this will be a great podcast for you. It was a game changer for me. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

If you are a leader who embodies activism, you are moved by personal convictions that see beyond yourself and the bottom line. You boldly desire to make intentional change that will impact another person, your family, where you work, our planet. When activism is seen as a negative word, it supports the status quo. Making activism negative plays upon your fears being misunderstood or being seen as too much, too disruptive. And it is easy to respond to these fears by quickly defaulting into silence or complacency. But there is something immensely freeing by owning our values and desires for the world we want. Sure, it can feel a little scary and most definitely vulnerable. When we do the work to not be weighed down by our burdens, we can move through the fears and increase our capacity for vulnerability so we can own our activism not as something to be ashamed of but as a beacon for our meaningful work and life.My guest today wrote a whole book reframing activism with a more holistic lens that is inclusive and inspiring. She has given us a road map on redefining and reclaiming activism in an aligned and meaningful way.Karen Walrond is a lawyer, leadership coach, and activist. On today's episode, Rachel Vindman, Jasmine Clark, and Amanda Weinstein talk about how they keep finding the energy and joy in activism. They discuss some of the many battles worth fighting—for example, the undemocratic shenanigans happening last week in Jasmine's own Gwinnett County or the fact that the right wing actually wants to ban books. The hosts discuss how they rely on small victories and the energizing feeling of helping people in their community to keep them going. Then suburban mom Marla Zwinggi stops by the pod to discuss the work she's doing in her own Ohio community, how she felt burned out after the election, and what she did to bounce back. After that, Amanda sits down with Karen Walrond, an activism coach and author of “The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How to Work for Change Without Losing Your Joy.” They talk about personal transformation, adoption, how to find the joy in activism, and what activism even is. They also talk about Karen's friendship with Brené Brown (we promise we're not jealous!) and her cameo in the movie “Wine Country” (... okay, maybe we're a little jealous). Finally, Amanda, Jasmine, and Rachel raise a glass to sports victories, taking a vacation, and getting their kids vaccinated in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Do you feel like you could use some support figuring out how to respond to anti-mask, anti-vax, or anti-CRT messaging in your community? We invite you to sign up for one of our Troublemaker Trainings! It's Part 2 of our two-part series with Karen Walrond, writer, activist, and longtime friend. We are talking about her new book, The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How to Work for Change without Losing Your Joy. In Part 1, we talked about activism and how it shows up in our daily lives. And in this episode, we talk about the connection between activism and spirituality. We talk about listening to the whispers that are calling us and the self-inquiry strategies that help us know what we're supposed to be doing. We also dig in on performative activism and outrage, as well as the realities of burnout and how joy helps curb some of that. It's an important conversation — and one we need to be having right now. This week, I'm talking to Karen Walrond, writer, activist, and longtime friend of mine about her new book, The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How to Work for Change without Losing Your Joy. This is the right book for the right time. Activism is such a big and often intimidating concept, and Karen breaks it down into small, intentional, and integrated acts that create a joyful life. We talk about how we met and how we define activism, and we share some really personal experiences we each had after Hurricane Harvey that shaped how we see the intersection of activism and joy. So, enjoy this first of two episodes on life, light, and activism and how those three things are completely interconnected. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

No matter what your specific religious beliefs are - or whether you have any defined beliefs at all - there is undoubtedly something comforting and essential about finding a sense of purpose, meaning, and wisdom outside of yourself. As someone who grew up in the Christian church, grew away from faith and found myself fumbling back in my 40s, I know how tricky and fraught this dance can be, so I was excited to have this conversation with Episcopal priest, podcaster, writer and mom Sarah Condon. Sarah talks honestly about what it's like to be a female spiritual leader, her work as the chaplain of Rice University, and how she sees women in transitional periods of life leaning into - and sometimes, temporarily away from - their spirituality. She also talks movingly about the recent tragic loss of her parents and how her faith has buoyed her through. Featured Sponsor Elevate your shoe game with cute styles + amazing comfort. Injustices seem to be piling up all around us - and yet the noisy, polarized world we inhabit can make it really hard to know how or when to use our voices. So how do we find the courage and conviction to speak up and take action when we know something is wrong, while staying positive and open? Today Karen Walrond, author of the upcoming book The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How To Work For Change Without Losing Your Joy, identifies the formula: courage to be vulnerable (and sometimes, wrong); curiosity to be interested in other people's experiences, and compassion to really listen and build bridges, not walls. If you've been feeling helpless or intimidated in the face of the never-ending news cycle, you won't want to miss this frank conversation about using your voice for good without losing sight of the good in each other. Karen and I also talk about her very outside-the-box career pivots, from engineer to lawyer to blogger and photographer to speaker and coach. My parents have lived all over the world, and for a time, they lived in Azerbaijan, the former Soviet republic. While they lived there, they purchased a number of Persian carpets (Azerbaijan borders Iran), which decorate their house now. One day while I was admiring one of their rugs, my father walked over and said, “You know, the Persian carpetmakers have a tradition: it can take years to weave the details into these rugs, but they always make one intentional mistake as they work. The reason is they believe only Allah is perfect, and therefore only Allah has the right to create perfectly.” I love this, and thought how freeing it would be if we believed this about not just rugs, but our lives. What if it was downright heretical to expect perfection out of ourselves? What if we believed that perfection was the purview of gods, not humans? I explore this question today on the Make Light Show. Join me as I discuss how to let go of perfectionism, the difference between perfectionism and healthy striving, and how to get happy now. If there's one question I get over and over, it's "How can I pursue a dream career as a content creator/artist/inspirational speaker/influencer and still pay the mortgage?" Is this you? On paper everything is perfect, and yet: you're a talented, well-paid professional seeking a path of much less security, and probably, less income. Or like Karen Walrond, you're waking up decades after Dad said, "You're a math person. You should be an engineer." My guest Karen Walrond and I rehash our paths from corporate America to new, creative, careers. Karen is a renowned speaker, coach, author, photographer and blogger. Learn about her shift from engineer and corporate lawyer to multi-hyphenate. We often hear the before story, and the happily ever after story. But what happens in between? How do you make the pivot and build a new path as a creative person? How do you pay the mortgage throughout? Karen and I talk through the process- and work in progress.
Join us today as we have our conversation with Karen Walrond. Karen is follow podcaster, blogger, photographer, leadership coach, author, and speaker. She calls for everyone to look for the light in all things.
Whit Honea speaks this week with two powerful voices on parents' roles in #MeToo, Karen Walrond and Mike Reynolds. Mike is a blogger and journeyman cross-stitcher and Karen is an author, photographer, speaker, and coach. Each gives their unique perspective on how we, as parents, can best prepare our children for a new -- and more equitable -- world.
Woman-of-all-trades, Karen Walrond, lit up the F***ing Shakespeare studio. She's a master storyteller, envy-inducing photographer and writer, and self-avowed twinkle-light-hangin', candle-lighting, biscuit-eating junkie. And we all fell in love with her. You will too. We asked listeners, friends and readers at Single Mom Nation to share what they lost in divorce. A hundred comments piled up in an hour, creating a profound list of Christmas ornaments to childhood photos, cars and homes to friends, dignity and mental wellness. That inventory was eerily similar to the overwhelming mountain of possessions outside the home of Karen Walrond, author, speaker, photographer and Hurricane Harvey survivor. Karen joins Jessica talk about why the little stuff matters so much to us, and to connect the great losses and even greater lessons of evacuating and recovering from a natural disaster – and divorce. Karen’s incredible, inspirational work is at home on Chookooloonks, her Make Light podcast is here and her books are here. Karen Walrond, recovering lawyer, leadership coach, photographer and author of "The Beauty of Different: Observations of a Confident Misfit", joins us to share her journey of celebrating uniqueness. Karen was born in Trinidad and moved back and forth to America as a child. Learning early on that survival meant assimilation, it became so second nature that she forgot who she truly was. This was most apparent during her career in law, trying to assimilate as a black female lawyer in the oil and gas industry, causing her to feel like she was failing her truest self. In a bold move to harness a more authentic way of being, Karen quit her job and took to the road to photograph people who embraced their “difference”. Through this process, she came to celebrate her own uniqueness, no longer viewing herself as a failure, but instead finding her truest superpower. Taylor Bradford "I will share whatever I am talking about, [in] the very first paragraph, I will interject whatever personality I have and whatever commentary I have." Taylor Bradford "We are kind of in a solo business even though we have other bloggers that we can go chat with, this is still our solo business, and you need someone that is not in your world to be able to cushion you." Taylor Bradford "You don't really want to burn out because this is your job and this is your business that you have been cultivating for so long but you need to be able to kind of renew yourself somehow and how do you do that well, you almost need to force yourself to take a break in order to recharge and be able to continue to put out the compelling content." Taylor Bradford QUOTES BY RACHEL "Really trying to stay true to why I started doing it and staying true to my own voice instead of trying to get caught up in the fads or things that really don't fall along my voice or my audience or my message which really is a food blog with family on the side." Rachel Matthews "I have found myself saying, ‘well if I just post about this once, then I can kind of maximize on this,' and it never feels authentic to me." Rachel Matthews "She [a reader] had a point that she sees people jumping on band wagons and all of a sudden they go away from the person that she's loved reading, I also went and explained to her well we are all growing and sometimes you read a blog for a long time and then the blog goes on a different path because that is where that blogger has gone." Rachel Matthews "You kind of have to realize that sometimes while they're [readers] there for what the service you're providing, they are not interested in who you are as a person, so that is an interesting line to walk as a food blogger...is how much personal do you get into and how much do you just stay recipes." Rachel Matthews "Closing the door is never a good idea as far as I believe. Always leave it open and I will tell you something, all PR people of all levels and of all companies talk." Rachel Matthews "My love language is food, hands down and doing this has allowed me to pursue photography which has always been a passion of mine but I never thought would be something that I could do further than a side hobby or a tourist." Rachel Matthews "The hardest [part of blogging] is being a business. Not just doing it for fun, really taking the time and doing the research and continually learning and following all the ever loving different changes of every network and every new thing that comes out." Rachel Matthews "Prayer, really, as cliché or trite as that sounds, when I start to feel like I can't do this or questioning myself or really just going ‘oh my gosh is this going to be the right decision, am I doing the best for myself, for my family, for everything'...taking a minute and kind of closing everything down, saying a prayer and sometimes going to my husband and saying, ‘okay, help me, let's talk,' because he is my biggest sounding board but he's also my biggest supporter." Rachel Matthews "Many more spouses are coming to conferences and seeing the space and getting to understand what happens, and seeing the power behind it. And also for how far that this space has come, and how many people are coming out of this with radio shows and TV shows and books, cookbooks, all of these amazing experiences and the way that they are being kind of rocketed into the stratosphere has really made more people step back and go "oh"." Rachel Matthews "Be authentic, be kind, and lift others up because if we don't do those things and we don't put that out there, what kind of world are we creating for ourselves but what are we leaving for those that come behind us."
