Chinese EV companies are gaining a foothold in European markets to sell EVs and to supply European EV manufacturers with locally manufactured EV batteries. The Central and Eastern European region – host to most of the Chinese EV and EV battery projects in Europe – exemplifies the emerging role of China, and presents an exceptional case study for how Chinese firms, technologies, and supply chains helps and hinders Europe's green transition. By focusing on cases of Chinese EV battery investments in CEE, this podcast episode explores the multi-layered impacts of these investments and offers a nuanced understanding of the intricate dynamics shaping contemporary transitions to electromobility. In this podcast, hosted by John Seaman, a Research Fellow at the French Institute of International Relations (Ifri), Dr. Ágnes Szunomár shares her recent research findings on the dynamics of Chinese EV projects in Europe. Dr. Ágnes Szunomár is an associate professor at Corvinus University of Budapest. This episode features a conversation about contemporary Indonesian politics, with a special focus on the role of Islam. In October 2024, Prabowo Subianto was sworn in as the president of Indonesia. In the Presidential election back in February 2024, he had quite handily defeated his two competitors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, with 59% of the popular vote. This 2024 election was the third time that Prabowo tried to become president, after he lost in 2014 and 2019 against Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. The political competitions between Jokowi and Prabowo on occasion turned quite ugly. Not infrequently, it was accusations that the other was the "wrong kind" of Muslim that made it ugly – with the effect that the two candidates always appeared like irreconcilable opponents. But when Jokowi could no longer compete in the 2024 elections after his second term was up, he surprised many spectators by endorsing none other than Prabowo as his successor as president. Prabowo, in turn, selected Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming, as his running mate. This episode is hosted by Dr. Verena Meyer, an Assistant Professor of Islam in South and Southeast Asia at Leiden University. She is joined by three colleagues with expertise in Islam and politics in contemporary Indonesia: (1) Dr. Zainal Abidin, who teaches at at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and also serves as Director of the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies; (2) Dr. Saskia Schäfer, Head of a Research Group about Secularity, Islam, and Democracy in Indonesia and Turkey at Humboldt University in Berlin; and (3) Dr. Taufiq Hanafi, postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in Leiden. Rob Garmaise, VP of AI research at Info-tech Research Group, is at the forefront of Info-tech research, helping clients identify best practices across their IT operations. They conduct extensive primary and secondary research, speaking with industry experts and other clients to understand the drivers of value and proof that a given practice leads to better results. AI Vendors, Verticals, and Research Taxonomy Rob explains that the firm has a vast research taxonomy, with AI being an important part of it. They have a team in place to connect with thought-leading vendors and their leading adopter clients to gather insights on various functions, rules, verticals, and sub-segments where AI is taking root. The strength in the marketplace currently lies in the horizontal focus on functions and roles across organizations rather than the various verticals or lines of business. Most AI vendors aim to maximize their total addressable market which is difficult to do when focusing on just one vertical. The Market and Vertically-orientated Competitors Rob predicts that the mix of vertically-oriented competitors will change as the market evolves. Currently, the strength is 80% on functions and roles, 20% on verticals. This approach allows AI vendors to maximize their total addressable market and stay competitive in the market. In this discussion, Rob discusses the implementation of AI solutions in various functions and roles within companies, including IT. He highlights the strengths in CO generation, data and analytics, service management, HR, sales, and marketing. AI in HR, Sales and Marketing, and Operations In HR, AI is being used to improve employee experience by indexing content and interacting with users. Talent acquisition recruiting uses AI on both sides of the recruiting equation, with AI being  used in talent assessment, helping to cut through biases and improve diverse hiring. Sales enablement and sales automation tools are the top lead and revenue-driving categories, while customer experience is the top cost-saving category. Operations are also being explored, with AI parsing information captured from video cameras for various applications such as shop floor settings, retail environments, and restaurants. Natural language conversations with equipment can lead to predictive maintenance, allowing organizations to strategize and optimize operations. Robert goes on to explain more about the improvements made using AI in HR, IT, and sales and management. AI-based Solutions in the Retail and Insurance Industry The conversation turns to the use of AI in various industries, including retail, and insurance. In the retail industry, AI-based solutions have impressed with their ability to scan store shelves with smartphones and receive critical metrics like stock availability, pricing, promotion, and competitor positioning. Smart Digital Signage solutions can also be used to adapt to demographics and reactions of customers. In the insurance industry, AI-based solutions include smart digital signage that can adapt to demographics and react to customer reactions. In the insurance industry, AI-based solutions include smart digital signage that can adapt to different demographics and respond to customer needs. Companies are exploring AI solutions to improve employee experience, sales, and marketing, while also focusing on cost-saving and predictive maintenance strategies. Robert discusses the potential benefits of AI in retail, such as real-time reactions to client information, and automated stock out detection. AI in the Legal and Financial Sectors In the legal sector, AI is being used for various purposes, including legal research, contract review, and contract management. This is particularly important for law firms and organizations with understaffed legal teams. In manufacturing, AI is being used to offer real-time instructions to machine line operators. Rob talks about disappointments in areas like financial services, healthcare, and government. In financial services, AI is being used for fraud detection, digital trust, and remote inspections. In insurance, AI can parse frequent documents into well-constructed spreadsheets or databases, and can conduct remote inspections. Rob also points out areas of disappointment.  Advice on Adopting AI  The conversation turns to the trend of AI being bought rather than built, particularly in the context of AI models. AI should be bought unless a build is absolutely necessary. The build side involves more uncertain investment levels and lead times, as it can lead to app sprawl and uncertainty in the market. Companies are advised to be deliberate about their build decisions, especially when it comes to AI models. On the talent side, companies are hiring new types of Chief AI officers or existing employees, such as Chief Digital Officers, Chief Technology Officers, and Chief Information Officers. These individuals are often left in charge of driving AI forward, but they may not have the necessary skills for building a new and unique model. On the build side, companies may need additional data scientists and data modelers, which can be challenging to achieve. On the consulting side, there is a growing trend of companies using top strategy firms on multiple AI projects. While most clients are still trying to orient themselves, consulting firms can help direct them towards buy-side scenarios where a POC or two can be done without a large implementation. Rob also touches on the importance of understanding the market and the potential benefits of AI solutions. What are the horizons, opportunities and challenges amidst the collapse of the Iranian-led order? Over the past few months Israel's genocidal assault in Gaza has more fully expanded into a regional conflict with what has been referred to as the “axis of resistance”, led by Iran. Its fall has been decisive, with the destruction of much of the senior leadership of Hezbollah, including the assassination of secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah on September 27th; and the collapse of the Assad regime on December 7th, after a lightning fast four-day offensive led by rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The basic idea Aether will be a small group of talented early-career AI safety researchers with a shared research vision who work full-time with mentorship on their best effort at making AI go well. That research vision will broadly revolve around the alignment, control, and evaluation of LLM agents. There is a lot of latent talent in the AI safety space, and this group will hopefully serve as a way to convert some of that talent into directly impactful work and great career capital. Get involved! 1. Team members so far Rohan Subramani I recently completed my undergrad in CS and Math at Columbia, where I helped run an Effective Altruism group and an AI alignment group. I'm now interning at CHAI. I've done several technical AI safety research projects in the past couple years. I've worked on comparing the expressivities of objective-specification formalisms in RL (at AI Safety Hub Labs, now called LASR Labs), generalizing causal games to better capture safety-relevant properties of agents (in an independent group), corrigibility in partially observable assistance games (my current project at CHAI), and LLM instruction-following generalization (part of an independent research group). I've been thinking about LLM agent safety quite a bit for the past couple of months, and I am now also starting to work on this area as part of my CHAI internship. I think my (moderate) strengths include general intelligence, theoretical research, AI safety takes, and being fairly agentic. A relevant (moderate) weakness of mine is programming. I like indie rock music :). Max Heitmann I hold an undergraduate master's degree (MPhysPhil) in Physics and Philosophy and a postgraduate master's degree (BPhil) in Philosophy from Oxford University. I collaborated with Rohan on the ASH Labs project ( comparing the expressivities of objective-specification formalisms in RL), and have also worked for a short while at the Center for AI Safety (CAIS) under contract as a ghostwriter for the AI Safety, Ethics, and Society textbook. During my two years on the BPhil, I worked on a number of AI safety-relevant projects with Patrick Butlin from FHI. These were focussed on deep learning interpretability, the measurement of beliefs in LLMs, and the emergence of agency in AI systems. In my thesis, I tried to offer a theory of causation grounded in statistical mechanics, and then applied this theory to vindicate the presuppositions of Judea Pearl-style causal modeling and inference. Advisors Erik Jenner and Francis Rhys Ward have said they're happy to at least occasionally provide feedback for this research group. We will continue working to ensure this group receives regular mentorship from experienced researchers with relevant background. We are highly prioritizing working out of an AI safety office because of the informal mentorship benefits this brings. Research agenda We are interested in conducting research on the risks and opportunities for safety posed by LLM agents. LLM agents are goal-directed cognitive architectures powered by one or more large language models (LLMs). The following diagram (taken from On AutoGPT) depicts many of the basic components of LLM agents, such as task decomposition and memory. We think future generations of LLM agents might significantly alter the safety landscape, for two ...

The family of origin roles that Brené (the Protector) and Barrett (the Peacekeeper) had to adjust in order to work together – and the two keys to working well with family.   3. The ways in which a child who grows up living on eggshells becomes an adult who is fearful – and how that fear shows up differently for Brené, Barrett, Glennon, and Amanda.    4. The hilarious moment when each sister confesses a secret that they fear the other believes about them–and we find out whether or not it's true.  5. How Brené and Barrett are walking through the grief of their mother's sudden decline, and how they circle back when the stress of that grief makes them shitty to each other.   About Brené:  Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston where she holds the Huffington Foundation Endowed Chair at The Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy, is the author of six #1 New York Times bestsellers, and is the host of the weekly podcasts Unlocking Us and Dare to Lead.  Brené's books have been translated into more than 30 languages and titles include:  Dare to Lead, Braving the Wilderness, Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and The Gifts of Imperfection. Researchers from MTU's Sustainable Infrastructure Research and Innovation Group (SIRIG) will take part in a groundbreaking, multi-million euro project that aims to reduce dependency on fossil-based fertiliser imports through the increased use of Recycling Derived Fertilisers (RDFs). The ReNu2Cycle project will examine impacts on availability, ecological footprint, supply chain and price stability via the use of recycled Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium fertiliser from municipal, industrial, agricultural, food, business waste and other agricultural sources. The project is funded through the Interreg North-West Europe programme with a total project value of €4.9 million, with €3.0 million sourced from the European Regional Development Fund. MTU's role in this ambitious project encompasses stakeholder and sustainability engagement, developing a comprehensive life cycle assessment, and creating an inventory of recycling-derived fertilisers, as well as an array of other research activities in collaboration with ReNu2Cycle's project partners. This will build on the achievements of the ReNu2Farm project (2017 to 2023), which provided basic & regional quantified fertiliser demand research. The project will look to adapt regional best practices for North West Europe (NWE) through the innovative use of living lab concepts across all aspects of the project's research, ensuring long-term co-innovation & implementation support will be stimulated and encouraged. Future RDF use will be maximised by creating innovative fertiliser blends & business solutions for producers' portfolios, including sustainability assessment. RDFs will be blended, prototyped & demonstrated on farms within the project's regions using the Living Lab methodology to assess their suitability for NWE-wide adoption by farmers. All results will be capitalised in one transregional nutrient supply-demand strategy and regional action plans to empower individuals, regions, and countries to grow the bioeconomy and maximise the use of recycled fertilisers. Resource owners, fertiliser producers, traders & farming communities will benefit from this strategy and the latest EU policies allow a harmonised RDF market trade in NWE, contributing further to NWE food supply security. Within Ireland, Munster Technological University is joined by South East Technological University, University of Limerick and Teagasc along with project partners from across the NWE region within the education, research and governance sectors. Dr Niamh Power, who is leading ReNu2Cycle's research for Munster Technological University, said, "With more focus than ever on sustainable agriculture, recycling derived fertilisers can play their part in reducing the impact of the farming sector while contributing to food security. RDFs are the future."

(Note: some quotes below have been edited for concision)Soundwalking is always like magic. It is a magical experience. It is so simple, Hildi, as you said, and it's as much about listening to sounds or listening to absences of sound. It's not very typical in our lives. We don't live the kinds of lives that require this kind of presence. And so it's restorative for me and calms my spirit. But also it's such a reminder each and every time I do a soundwalk of the power of just simply listening and opening up that register with all of its span from appreciation to analytics, to criticality and to spirituality. (Milena Droumeva)This is part 2 of a conversation with colleagues and friends from the Sonic Research Group at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. This time with Milena Droumeva, Hildegard Westerkamp, Barry Truax, Jacek Smolicki, Freya Zinovieff and myself. If you might have heard in part 1, e157, the Sonic Research Group is a bi-monthly zoom gathering of acoustic ecology researchers, activists and artists from around the world about sound studies and our shared passion for listening. This second conversation was on recorded on April 30, 2024 and flows freely on a range of issues, for example, Milena Droumeva talked about stages of life: I think stage of life is really important. If you're a young person who has to find a place in the world, or if you're a parent of young children or you're aging or entering a kind of middle age, you have to think about the futures of kids but there's work to do at every stage. We also talked about sound and artificial intelligence and I'm sure we'll revisit this one. In fact, how do you even know that I'm human? This could easily be a synthetic voice, right? Jacek, help us...What differentiates us from machines is historical consciousness. Algorithms are operating using biased and skewed data without considering the context within which this data has emerged. Our role as educators is to be reminders of historical context that this whole machinery is digesting and using it to produce futures comes from.. Education in sound and listening was a throughline in our conversation as Barry Truax observed:I'm still cautiously optimistic that we could still use those same techniques that we've used in the past to create a more creative, analytical and critical listener. We shared our common interest and passion for soundwalking. Hildegard Westerkamp noted that :A group can become a community even though we don't know each other, which creates an atmosphere of willingness to be open and grounded inside ourselves. We can get to that energetic place because we've slowed down. You can hear more about soundwalking in e22 westerkamp – slowing down through listening, e78 milena droumeva – art needs to get on the street and e113 soundwalk (part 1) - what is my position in listening ? and e113 soundwalk (part 2) - how can we deepen our listening? We also talked about current affairs such as the encampment at the University of British Columbia that day about the war in Gaza and calls for disinvestment. Freya Zinonieff told us a fascinating story (which you'll hear at the end of the story made me laugh) A music teacher at Columbia University was teaching John Cage's 4'.33'' and made a big fuss about how they couldn't teach that class because there was a loud protest outside the classroom and all she could hear was ‘from the river to the sea'. She said, okay, this just means we can't teach this now because it's ruining 4'.33''. We have to continue reminding ourselves and others that listening is a project and we need to learn together how to listen to what is actually there. We also discussed the sound of air conditioning systems in urban spaces as a symptom of climate change, the media practices of Neo-Nazi groups and more. Enjoy.  *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5.
