When Kari met her she had a little pixie hair cut, a face full of angel kisses, and an infectious laugh. Laurel Copeland Brown is the daughter of Kari's sweet friend Sherry Brown, who lost her battle with cancer on May 21, 2008. Sherry was one of Kari's "mommy mentors" - offering the "calm voice of reason" when as a new momma, Kari was losing her grip. Sherry left behind three little girls who are each so unique and beautiful. In Laurel, Kari has watched this pixie grow into a woman with moxie, who now quite often herself, offers words of encouragement and calm.

How do you mourn the loss of one of your greatest teachers? You make sure all your friends know her work. And if that means taking the mic to the car, because it's the quietest space in your household, so that you can read some of her words to those friends... so be it. When Rachel Held Evans passed away, May 4, 2019, she left this world a beautiful legacy in the body of her work. Words that encourage us to wrestle with the Scripture. To embrace the doubt that crouches near our faith - and know to that God isn't shocked or saddened by our questions. Today, Kari reads a portion from Rachel's latest book "Inspired". Please hold Rachel's family close in prayer.

Cheryl Moses is one of those sister-friends that when you meet her for the first time you think, "Oh! There you are! I'm going to be knowing you for a long time!" In today's episode, we cover a lot of ground, several storms, some writer's blocks, a badge of honor, some sacred space, unifying the church... and in the words of the every wise Cheryl Moses - "We've got some work to do folks!" Kim joins in this week to welcome one of our favorites, Ashley Brown Ruiz, to the table. She started her work as a teacher in an inner-city Houston elementary school for 12 years. There, she learned that there was a lack of language or ability to communicate with one another, which led her to want to go back to school to become a social worker. As the director of The Daring Way, a certification and training program based on Brene Brown’s work that takes other helping professionals through shame resilience work that they can then implement into their work. Long before her two little boys followed her around the house begging her, "Read to me!" Chris Helene Bridge was a storyteller. She wrote of the things her life taught her - both to help her understand them better and to help others. Her little boys have grown into men, and Chris still loves reading, creating, and sharing joy with little learners. So, get your kettle going, and serve yourself up a big cup of your favorite tea. Then settle in and listen to the beautiful heart of this amazing artist, author, and literacy advocate. You may just find yourself longing to read a book to a child - and today's guest has an spetacular selection to choose from!

A champion is someone who fights for a cause and today's guest was born a Champion. Literally. Megan Champion Greiner is the wife to one amazing tax accountant, turned woodworker, mother to three amazing humans and a small business owner with Plexus. When her prayers to become a mom were answered, it was as if God said, "I'm going to give you what you asked for... with a little something extra!" We can't wait for you to fall in love with Megan and her crew. God has plans for her life and there's nothing Down About it!

Gayla Brown has the biggest, sweetest heart, so when this old friend of Kari's shared that she is a bee keeper - it felt like the most natural thing in the world. Her creativity, joy, and kindness are contagious - and like the bees she keeps, this precious heart stays busy keeping her hives, face painting (as a side gig) and making bee's wax products. We had such fun drawing parallels between bees and our spiritual lives. Make a cup of tea, add some local honey, pull up a chair, and let's visit with sweet Gayla Brown.

If you ever find youself in a line where Jana King is serving something, take my advice and accept a heapin' helping of whatever she offers. Chances are it will come with a warm smile, a hearty hug and words of encouragement sprinkled lavishly over you.

This was one visit that could have gone on for hours! But when Perri Verdino-Gates shared that she worked for Barney and Friends "for years and years" and TOTALLY surprised me with that little nugget, and the question cards went out the door, the wheels came off and we went wherever the Spirit chose to take us.

Donna Layfield is the managing owner of Serenity Studios in the Heights of Houston. Kari met Donna through their mutual sister-friend of the heart Vanessa Vance and we feel it both right and fitting that we opened our time together in prayer. Donna and Kari talk about creative processes, their mutual love for the beauty in imperfect things and for quiete spaces to experience something new.
