A narrative of cultural translation, identity, and belonging. The thrill of a new place fades quickly for Caroline Topperman when she moves from Vancouver to Poland in 2013. As she delves into her family's history, tracing their migration through pre-WWII Poland, Afghanistan, Soviet Russia and beyond, she discovers the layers of their complex experiences mirror some of what she felt as she adapted to life in a new country. How does one balance honoring both one's origins and new surroundings? Your Roots Cast a Shadow explores where personal history intersects with global events to shape a family's identity. From the bustling markets of Baghdad to the quiet streets of Stockholm, Topperman navigates the murky waters of history as she toggles between present and past, investigating the relationship between migration, politics, identity, and home. Her family stories bring history into the present as her paternal grandmother becomes the first woman allowed to buy groceries at her local Afghan market while her husband is tasked with building the road from Kabul to Jalalabad. Topperman's Jewish grandfather, a rising star in the Communist Party, flees Poland at the start of WWII one step ahead of the Nazis, returning later only to be rejected by the Party for his Jewish faith. Topperman herself struggles with new cultural expectations and reconciling with estranged relatives. Becky Whetstone, Ph.D. is a marriage and family therapist in private practice who specializes in trauma, codependency, and marriage crisis. A journalist and former features writer and columnist for the San Antonio Express-News, she created a singles movement dedicated toward kindness, decency, and integrity in dating that became a south Texas phenomenon. Among the 600,000 annual divorces that transpire within the United States, almost all of them begin with a marriage crisis. Whether your partner told you they want to leave the marriage, or you are wondering how to break the news that you want out, this breaking point can be filled with overwhelming emotions, worry about children becoming collateral damage, and ill-advised counseling that make navigating this process more frightening and confusing than it has to be. These heartbreaking times can propel couples into a state of fear, panic, and uncertainty about what steps they should take, sometimes leading them to divorce when reconciliation might have been possible. Known as the “Marriage Crisis Manager,” marriage and family therapist Becky Whetstone fills in these gaps by speaking to both partners on how to manage themselves and their relationship in the healthiest of ways, regardless of the eventual outcome. In I (Think) I Want Out, Whetstone's coaching offers clear understanding on why everyone feels crazy and overwhelmed during one of life's most difficult experiences. By promoting peacefulness and self-care, she emphasizes the importance of both partners slowing down throughout the process. With engaging exercises and worksheets, Whetstone organizes an intelligent plan so all parties can successfully manage the crisis in a way where smart, rational decision-making can take place, and mistakes are minimized.  Visit: https://doctorbecky.com

But when a story of hungry children filled her with unbearable guilt, she decided to change the way her family approached mealtime. In her new book, No Scrap Left Behind: My Life Without Food Waste, she tells the story of her quest to end her family's food waste—and all the blunders that came with it. Despite finicky kids and a skeptical husband, Pilgrim turned her feelings of guilt into action and created a zero-food waste kitchen. “Even if I can't change how much food the world wastes, it feels good to look at this problem and say — with absolute honesty — that I have nothing to do with it,” says Pilgrim. Pilgrim defines food waste with Rule #1: the Hungry Kid Test—would you throw something edible away with a hungry child watching? If the answer is yes, it can go in the compost. If the answer is no, then it's time to get creative. Teralyn Pilgrim is the author of Don't Dance on the Toilet: and Other Things I Never Thought I'd Say to my Kids. Greg Kaplan is an internationally recognized college admissions strategist and speaker. Headquartered in Newport Beach, his firm, the Kaplan Educational Group, helps hundreds of high school seniors and over 1,000 underclassmen reach their educational and career potential each year. Greg draws on his experience as an investment banker and lawyer to tie one's education to their long-term goals. Beyond earning admission, Greg and the Kaplan Educational Group Team are committed to helping all of their students become healthy, happy, and financially independent adults. The Journey is rooted in humorous stories distilled with bits of sagely honest advice, The Journey goes beyond the well-chronicled college admissions madness and cuts to the core of parental angst with concrete suggestions for preparing children for a competitive and rapidly changing world. Young people face an increasing medley of challenges as they pursue higher education—rising tuition costs, daunting prospective student debt, and a talented and competitive applicant pool. After a decade of preparing students for the ever more difficult admissions process, college counselor Greg Kaplan wishes parents would stop thinking, “What should I do to get my kid into a good college?” and instead ask: “How can I best prepare my child for what comes next?”  The Journey paints a realistic picture of the lack of preparedness among today's youth. Using stories of parents and students who have struggled and succeeded, Kaplan pushes students to consider: What do you want to get out of your college and work career? How can you jumpstart your journey into the real world? He asks parents: Are you preparing your children to attain a life of health, happiness, and financial independence? A scientific, groundbreaking approach to happiness and personal fulfillment. In 1979, Dr. Alphonsus Obayuwana was awarded a national research grant and Smith-Kline Medical Perspective Fellowship to develop an instrument for measuring human hope, with the purpose of detecting hopelessness early enough in troubled human individuals so assistance could be offered in time to prevent suicide. The Hope Index Scale (HIS) that resulted from this grant became very popular with Fortune 500 companies and other institutions both in the US and in other countries. This led to the foundation of decades of research that ultimately resulted in this cutting-edge book, The Happiness Formula: Using Science to Understand Personal Satisfaction, Human Hope, and Subjective Well-Being. Unlike other books about happiness, which are too often filled with dos and don'ts, wishful thinking, and empty aphorisms, The Happiness Formula breaks new ground by introducing a universal unit of measure called the “Personal Happiness Index” or PHI. This makes it possible—for the first time ever—to calculate and assign numerical happiness scores to human individuals by plugging their unique hopes, hungers, assets, and aspirations into an equation. Despite its title, The Happiness Formula is much more than a mathematical equation for measuring happiness. It is a book about life; the relationship between human hope and happiness; how to find, measure and boost them; and, most interestingly, how to confirm the happiest country in the world and even help identify the happiest living human, or HLH. It challenges the World Happiness Report of 2023, debunks three major happiness myths, and then introduces the Triple-H Equation—the simple but profound formula about what makes life worth living. This is a book for happiness seekers and happiness advocates everywhere.

A gentle guide for helping readers “over a certain age” discover their best life by finding the right-sized home in the best location. Moving is no fun. Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So, when those over a certain age — say, in the last third of life — are looking to downsize and move all at the same time, many will conclude, “I'll just stay put, thank you very much.” It's not just the acquired possessions holding them back, but also the intangibles. Their memories, their family history, their identities are all in jeopardy, they think. And yet, that reluctance to lighten up, let go, and move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life. Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now, when they're no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near, is their chance to live where they want to live. Every section contains checklists: some soul-searching (should you or shouldn't you move?), some practical (what every kitchen must have), and some logistical (where's your happy place?), to help readers on their journey. Included are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place, remodeled their existing home, or even moved to a larger home, which one third do; whether they moved to a new city, to a senior community, or to a new home in the same neighborhood, they all reimagined their lives, re-evaluated their belongings and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet.
