Michlas Lund-Mouritzen introduces SE to non-practitioners in a fun and informative way, with a lot of cognitive stimulation. Michlas goes over the basics of SE. Question: Are there any formal studies on the effect of street epistemology Answer (I am paraphrasing his response): SEi is in talks with one neuroscientist about studying SE formally but publishable results are at least a year out. But for now, no, there are no scientific studies on the effect of SE. Comment on the SE survey: Michlas would like to note that the SE survey is not the product of Abstract Activist alone, saying this was a mistake on Michlas part. While Abstract Activist is a major force behind it, multiple people have made great contributions. Abstract Activist still remains Michlas favorite example channel on how to utilize the survey. Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! For today’s Atheist Experience, Jenna Belk is joined by Anthony Magnabosco. Anthony is best known for Street Epistemology, a method for addressing beliefs/claims. Learn more at https://streetepistemology.com/Our first caller, Mark says that prophesies are keeping him tied to his religion, saying several predictions/claims are real. Try not to jump to conclusions about these claims, a more natural explanation tends to be best. Allow yourself to question and doubt the things you thought were true. Amber in SC can’t shake her belief that souls are real. What makes you think a soul exists? It sounds like you are afraid of letting go of aspects of your religion. It can be hard to let go of those beliefs, it takes time and it's a slow process. Give yourself credit for assessing these beliefs. Chase in TX asks about Anthony’s recent video regarding Caleb, an animated street preacher whose behavior seemed to change and Chase was wondering the cause of such a dramatic change. Check out that video here, https://youtu.be/IXzCdauGc_8 Anthony quickly breaks down aspects of those interviews. Sid in NV asks how we process grief as a non believer. We keep people alive in the memories and stories we share, it keeps them alive in your head.. Try to take a few moments to remember them when you come across pictures or keepsakes. Don’t forget to check out http://griefbeyondbelief.org/ Sam in PA finds it difficult to use techniques of Street Epidemiology to address political beliefs. Focus on the claims made, there is a factual truth on these political beliefs you can address. Anthony recommends Cordial Curiosity’s channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiWKxPMKUBFjN3Ny_VxpkYw)Steven in GA asks if we believe Jesus forced humans into existence, based on scripture and prophecy. There is no way to verify that, especially using the bible. Steven was placed back on hold so he could clarify the claim. Andrea in CA asks what we can do about people getting defensive about their beliefs. Jenna was conditioned to be guarded if someone tried to change her mind, believing it was the devil tempting you. Explore safer topics to indicate you aren’t just attacking and just let them be exposed to other worldviews. Skye in CO sticks to their beliefs based on fear of being left behind during the rapture. These are legacy fears that come with the belief. Access communities to talk with atheists who overcame that same fear. Look into www.recoveringfromreligion.org they have resources to address this. Lastly, Joe in VA doesn’t think we can have an infinite regress without there being an eternal being behind that. The honest response here is “I don’t know". There are lots of things that seem intuitive that aren’t once we learn more. Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. Please continue to follow safety guidelines and wear your damn mask!

Beliefs, Claims & Opinions: 00:48 | He used to be a scientologist, but no longer believes in it. 01:33 | Jesus Christ was exactly who he said he was. 02:12 | Faith is defined as belief without proof. 03:39 | If he had never believed, he would have had an urge to. 03:48 | Faith craves fulfillment that's beyond human understanding. 04:55 | His soul longs to worship. We're made to worship, be in awe, to be curious. 05:38 | His favorite teaching pastor is Timothy Keller, which is where he learned this. 06:22 | God is where we go to for fulfillment and for identity. 06:54 | Until he learns how to seek fulfillment from God, then he'll always "seek it from colder sources". 07:32 | Any god is where one finds true fulfillment. 07:52 | Personal fulfillment is subjective. 08:32 | Seeking fulfillment in a god is the most advised. 10:07 | If it isn't true for you it isn't true. If someone believes it is true for them, then it's true. 11:07 | He would prefer to believe in things that are true for everyone. 11:20 | It is not an indisputable fact that Jesus exists. 11:41 | It's a gift to be able to believe and accept this. He didn't choose to believe in the gospel. 13:00 | Idolatry is taking a good thing and making it an ultimate thing. 14:19 | The "precious" from Lord of the Rings is a metaphor for idolatry. 14:45 | Jesus in the ultimate "precious" but once God comes into your life, it will ultimately be a good thing. Confidence Level: 02:01 | 100% Reasons for Belief: 02:24 | He does not have proof, but he has faith. 03:22 | He doesn't need to see God to know that he exists. 06:12 | Experentially. Questions: 02:34 | Is faith the main reason for your belief in Jesus? 05:18 | How did you first to come that belief (that the soul longs to worship)? 06:12 | How do you know [the soul longs to worship] is true? 07:45 | Is it possible to find fulfillment without a god? 08:19 | Would the ability to find true fulfillment be a reliable way to believe in a god? 09:39 | Does gaining fulfillment in anything make the object of fulfillment true? 11:00 | Would you prefer to believe in things that are not only true for you but for everyone? 11:19 | Is it an indisbutible fact that Jesus exists? 11:41 | Is "true for them" a reliable to come to a belief in Jesus? 14:45 | Would Jesus itself be a form of a "precious"? __ Twitter: http://twitter.com/cordialcurious Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cordial_cur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/civildiscoursenetwork

Beliefs, Claims & Opinions: 00:49 | God is much more powerful than the God(s) of religion. 03:05 | I don't believe in the concept of religion due to their contradictory nature. 04:12 | Religion doesn't make sense. The Adam and Eve story, for example, brings a lot of questions to mind. 06:02 | The Bible stories are unreliable because they were written so long after the original events. 09:51 | I'm a child of belief. 11:05 | You can believe in something that may be true for you, but in reality, may not be true. 14:48 | God is beautiful. I have to be good because god gave me a chance to be here. Regardless of religion. 15:38 | Someone can be good without a god. Confidence Level: 02:47 | I believe in my heart. It's my belief. 12:44 | I'm not sure it's true. Reasons for Belief: 01:05 | Scientists are continuously revealing evidence of planets like ours, proving the power of god. 07:24 | Beautiful things are evidence of god. I attribute whatever I see as beautiful to god and what's ugly to man. 08:33 | Everything science reveals about how the world works is evidence of the god. 09:13 | It's just a belief. There's only two ways the world came to be. Science's "doctrine" says that it came to be by accident. I believe it came to be by a creator. 10:13 | I have no proof. 10:20 | I like logic. Anything that makes sense to me, I'll accept. Anything that doesn't, I won't accept. 11:52 | My proof is the beauty of creation. 12:20 | I do not want to accept the scientific explanation of how the world came to be. I want to believe god did it. 13:48 | God's existence can be justified because I have life. 14:10 | I attributes all of these (positive) things in life to god. That I'm not an accident. 16:20 | I was brainwashed as a child. It's difficult to deny. 16:52 | I cannot deny it. Questions: 07:18 | Is there any reliable way to know if the god you believe in is true? 09:04 | Is there anything you could find out to change your confidence? 10:16 | Do you want to believe in things that are true? 10:52 | Is just believing something is true a reliable way to know if it's true? 12:07 | Is it possible this world could have been created without a god? 12:25 | Does the preference one has for a belief matter about the truth of it? 13:25 | Just because something makes sense to you, does that make it true? 13:38 | Is there any way to be more justified in the belief? 14:21 | How do you know your attributions are correct? 14:43 | What's this belief doing for you? 15:32 | Is there any way to be good without a god? 16:08 | If it's possible to be good without a god, why believe? __ Twitter: http://twitter.com/cordialcurious Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cordial_cur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/civildiscour
