Rental listings before and after the LA wildfires showed steep hikes in some parts of LA County, as the loss of thousands of homes sent people scrambling for alternate housing in the area. Listed rental prices more than tripled in parts of Los Angeles after wildfires destroyed thousands of homes, despite anti-gouging rules. A Washington Post analysis of listings data from property analytics service RentCast found that LA County rents overall jumped 20% two weeks after the disaster compared to two weeks before. But individual neighborhoods and cities in the sprawling county saw steeper hikes. For example, rent for a single-family home in the city of Glendora, which is about a half hour away from fire-ravaged Altadena, soared 150% to a median monthly rate of $4,974. In Beverly Hills, rent for a townhouse surged 142% to $15,000, and rent for a single-family home in Encino, an LA neighborhood on the other side of the hills from Pacific Palisades, jumped 141% to $12,025. But drilling down to individual ZIP codes revealed even bigger increases. Sherman Oaks, which is next to Encino in LA's San Fernando Valley, saw rent shoot up 266%, according to the Post. Rent in nearby Valley Village leapt 198%, and one ZIP code in the city of Glendale saw a 206% markup.

Welcome back, Everybody! I hope 2025 is treating you well so far. My guest on today's podcast is Alina Krasnianska, the Executive Producer of “Culture vs war. Liberov,” a documentary that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In this case “home” is Kyiv, Ukraine. The logline for the film is, “A deeply touching story of the war by the eyes of the couple of photographers Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov.” I sincerely do not have words for how powerful and important this film is. In fact, I wish that every person in the USA would watch it right now. No, I want everyone in the world to see it. And you can... right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgVN6HHIW3k This film is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series and a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. I do not feel that I am exaggerating when I say that this film is one of the most important films that has ever played at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks film festival. Honestly, I cannot believe how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to talk to Alina for two hours about this film, about the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and about life in the country that my great grandparents fled in the 1890's. But even if you have no tie to Ukraine surely any person who believes in human rights, freedom, democracy, and the right to not be murdered in your home by a fascist neighbor will appreciate Alina's films and hopefully this podcast interview with her. What is truly inspiring is that Alina and her creative partners reacted to the invasion by highlighting the power of Culture to overcome War. There is so much I want to say about this film and Alina, but I will instead just ask you to listen to the interview and WATCH THE FILMS. It's Monday, November 18th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslims killed four Christians in Kaduna State, Nigeria As a Nigerian Christian man named Kushuwai started harvesting rice with his family on November 8th in Jema'a County, he suddenly found himself in the middle of a nightmare, reports International Christian Concern. Muslim extremists, believed to be Fulani militants, attacked his farming community, killing four Christians and critically wounding several others in Southern Kaduna State. Kushuwai said, “They came in their numbers, armed with guns, knives, and machetes. They encircled us without firing a shot. My son begged them to spare us, but they attacked him instead. My daughters and the other women ran for their lives while I was struck down trying to intervene.” Although Kushuwai survived with severe injuries, his son was brutally killed. In Romans 8:35, the Apostle Paul asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?“ Chinese student killed 8, injured 17 after failing exam On Saturday, a Chinese student killed eight people and injured 17 others in a stabbing attack at Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing city, China, reports One America News. Police stated that the suspect, who was arrested on the scene, was a recent graduate who was motivated to kill and maim because of “failing [an] exam, not receiving a graduation certificate, and dissatisfaction with internship compensation.” Biden authorizes Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles inside Russia President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to strike deeper inside Russia, easing limitations on the weapons as Russia deploys thousands of North Korean troops to reinforce its war, reports the Associated Press. The decision allowing Kyiv to use the Army Tactical Missile System for attacks farther inside Russia comes as President Vladimir Putin positions North Korean troops along Ukraine's northern border to try to reclaim hundreds of miles of territory seized by Ukrainian forces. North Korea has provided thousands of troops to Russia to help Moscow try to claw back land in the Kursk border region that Ukraine seized this year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and many of his Western supporters have been pressing Biden for months to allow Ukraine to strike military targets deeper inside Russia with Western-supplied missiles, saying the U.S. ban had made it impossible for Ukraine to try to stop Russian attacks on its cities and electrical grids. The Red State, a conservative website wrote, “Maybe Joe Biden didn't get the memo: he lost the presidential election and will be vacating the White House in January. It's an odd time to be announcing a significant--and perhaps escalatory--shift toward Ukraine as they try to stave off Russian aggression in the ongoing war between the two countries.” Trump picked Secretary of Energy President-elect Donald Trump has named energy industry executive Chris Wright as his choice to lead the Department of Energy, pending Senate confirmation, reports The Epoch Times. In a November 16 statement, Trump wrote, “Chris has been a leading technologist and entrepreneur in energy. He has worked in nuclear, solar, geothermal, and oil and gas. Most significantly, Chris was one of the pioneers who helped launch the American Shale Revolution that fueled American energy independence, and transformed the global energy markets and geopolitics.” In remarks at a National Conservatism conference in 2021, Wright warned that ongoing attempts to shift from oil, coal, and gas to renewables are “the largest politically driven mis-investment ever,” that will increase energy costs and reduce reliability. Christian group opposes Matt Gaetz for Attorney General A conservative Christian legal group is opposing Present-elect Trump's nomination of Matt Gaetz to be the next Attorney General Liberty Counsel, headed by Mat Staver, released a statement in which they declared, “Matt Gaetz is neither morally nor professionally qualified to become the United States Attorney General. This is the highest law enforcement position in the country. America deserves much better. “Professionally, Matt Gaetz graduated from law school in 2007, and briefly worked for a law firm in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida before being elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2010. He served in that role until 2016, and was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2017. Gaetz has three years or less experience in the practice of law, hardly enough to serve as the nation's chief law enforcement officer.” In the statement, Liberty Counsel wrote, “Morally, Gaetz has been under a cloud of sex and drug allegations. On Wednesday, as soon as he was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump, Gaetz immediately resigned from Congress, thus ending the Ethics probe into his sex parties that includes allegations of paying an underage girl for sex. Gaetz will face tough questions during any confirmation hearing and will likely not be confirmed. His immediate resignation raises serious questions as it occurred just two days before the U.S. House Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote to release what is expected to be a damaging report.” Mike Pence opposes RFK Jr at HHS over abortion Former Vice President Mike Pence urged Senate Republicans on Friday to vote against Trump's nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, citing his views on abortion, reports the Christian Post. He said, "The Trump-Pence administration was unapologetically pro-life for our four years in office. There are hundreds of decisions made at HHS every day that either lead our nation toward a respect for life or away from it, and HHS under our administration always stood for life." Court upholds Indiana's ban on gender transition for minors A federal appeals court panel has upheld Indiana's ban on sex-change operations and hormone drugs for minors, including things like administering puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and cosmetic irreversible surgeries, reports The Christian Post. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Wednesday to reverse a lower court decision against Senate Enrolled Act 480, which passed in April 2023. Talk show host Dennis Prager seriously injured his back And finally, last Tuesday, conservative Jewish talk show host Dennis Prager seriously injured his back in a fall at his home, reports The Express Tribune. Prager, age 76, hosts a weekday show heard on 400 radio stations. He is also the founder of PragerU, known for its short educational videos that promote conservative values on topics like economics and political science. It is "the most viewed conservative video site in the world, with one billion views a year, more than half by people under the age of 35." Please pray for his full recovery. And send a get well card addressed to Dennis Prager, 15021 Ventura Blvd. #552. Sherman Oaks, CA 91403. James 5:14 says, “The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well." This one is a departure episode for Discover Indie Film, but everyone should check out Blake Laitner because he is the definition of an indie filmmaker. He wrote to me through Instagram because he is taking his underground indie film “We Need Rent Money” on tour of the cannabis dispensaries of the USA. When Blake reached out to see if I would help promote his screening at The Higher Path, in Sherman Oaks, CA, his indie spirit inspired me to not care that his film did not come to me through Sherman Oaks Film Festival or Film Invasion Los Angeles. This person has been said no to hundreds and hundreds of times, but he keeps pressing forward. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did filming it! When longtime Sherman Oaks resident Charles Wilding stopped leaving his house in 2020, his neighbors became concerned. But what troubled them the most was the arrival of Caroline Herrling, a stranger claiming to be Charles' trustee, responsible for restoring and selling his home. Eventually, neighbors and authorities would learn that Caroline was the mastermind behind a multi million dollar fraud scheme – and getting rid of Charles was simply the first step.In today's Headlines, Candice is joined by LA Times staff writer Brittny Mejia, who has covered the case in-depth. They discuss how Caroline's scheme was exposed, how she targeted other victims, and where the investigation stands now.For more of Brittny's reporting, visit https://www.latimes.com/people/brittny-mejia. People that don't reset clocks after a time change deserve a Sisyphus-esque fate, for all eternity. (Wait til I get into dishwasher etiquette) The robber and the laundromat screamer.
