Today I am joined by Taylor Davis Reese! Taylor was born and raised just outside of Charlotte, NC. During her high school years, Taylor recognized a need for unique jewelry and began teaching herself to make bracelets and sets for upperclassmen attending prom. After high school, she attended Appalachian State University and Queens University of Charlotte where she earned her degree in Sports Communication. Taylor has always been equally passionate about sports and fashion. After college she worked at Belk for five years where she held positions in trend forecasting and cosmetic buying. In 2013 she started her first blog, The Fancier Fan, as a way to combine both of her passions and to style the jewelry she was making. After college, Taylor realized there was a gap in the market for more fashion forward, team-colored jewelry for smaller fan bases and knew that her jewelry hobby could be a great brand. In 2015, The Fancier Fan was updated to Reese's Hardwear to encompass a wider audience and array of content. December 2021 brought more changes as Taylor decided to separate the jewelry brand (Shop Taylor Reese) from the blog (Reese's Hardwear) and table styling/ entertaining (Always the Host) accounts on social media. In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Taylor is a contributor to Scoop Charlotte, stylist, and is involved with several of the fashion weeks and pop ups held in the Carolinas, and a co-founder of the Charlotte chapter of The Southern C. You can often find her shopping local boutiques or her favorite bead store, reading, or at home spending lots of time with her husband and two boys. Taylor Hill's life took an unexpected turn at the age of 14 when she was discovered at a dude ranch in Colorado. Born in Illinois but raised in the mountains of Colorado, Taylor grew up snowboarding and enjoying the outdoors with her family. Her mother, a former hairdresser turned stay-at-home mom, instilled in her a sense of creativity and diligence that would serve her well in her future career. That fateful day at the ranch, a photographer mistook Taylor and her siblings for hired models. Within 24 hours, she found herself shooting her first catalog for Belk. This serendipitous encounter launched her into the world of modeling, a career she hadn't previously considered. At 14, Taylor signed with IMG Models and began her whirlwind journey in the fashion industry. With her mother by her side, she navigated the complexities of the modeling world, learning to balance work and personal growth. As Taylor's modeling career soared, she became a familiar face in major fashion shows and campaigns. Her work with Victoria's Secret became a significant part of her journey, participating in their iconic fashion shows and growing alongside the brand as it evolved over the years.Throughout her modeling career, Taylor found a constant companion in her dog, Tate. This Labradoodle became more than just a pet; he was her soulmate and teacher, showing her the meaning of unconditional love and responsibility. Tate accompanied her to photoshoots in New York, becoming a beloved mascot in the fashion world.Tragically, Tate's battle with lymphoma opened Taylor's eyes to the gaps in the pet care industry. This experience inspired her to create Tate & Taylor, a company aimed at revolutionizing the pet space. Through this venture, Taylor seeks to blend her experiences in fashion and social media with her passion for pets, creating a platform that offers curated products, educational content, and a supportive community for pet owners.Today, Taylor continues to balance her successful modeling career with her entrepreneurial pursuits. She's set to return to the Victoria's Secret runway later this year, while also working tirelessly to grow Tate & Taylor.*The Founder Hour is brought to you by Outer. Robert E. (Bob) Hope is a veteran of the public relations and event marketing business. He is co-owner and president of Hope-Beckham, an independent agency based in Atlanta. Hope and longtime friend Paul Beckham started Hope-Beckham 25 years ago. Clients have included Chick-fil-A Foundation, Turner Broadcasting, Belk, The Coca-Cola Company, Southern Company, Home Depot, Comcast and a variety of sports teams and leagues as well as non-profit organizations. He is author of two books – “We Could Have Finished Last Without You” about his early days with the Braves, and “Greater Late than Never” about people who achieved their life's success after age 50. Will Rogers once said there are two kinds of people on earth – those who march in the parade and those who sit on the curb and watch. If you march, you have only one view your entire life. However, if you sit on the right curb, you see marvelous things. Bob Hope has spent his life on a marvelous curb observing remarkable people and events. He started working for the Atlanta Braves while in college and became the team's director of public relations and promotions at age 24. He managed the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at age 25. And he was with Hank Aaron during the chase to break the all-time home run record of Babe Ruth. When Ted Turner bought the team, he was promoted to vice president at age 29 and worked not only for the Braves but also the Turner-owned Atlanta Hawks and for Turner's TV station, handling marketing for the Braves and the TV station. He left Turner to work on sports, particularly the Olympics, for The Coca-Cola Company and then decided to go into the public relations agency business so he could work for both Coke and Turner, which led to a career in New York in a top job of the world's largest public relations firm. Along the way, he has been involved in many Olympics, including Atlanta. He helped several cities with their campaigns to land major league sports franchises – Charlotte in the NBA, Miami, Denver and Washington in Major League Baseball, Ottawa in hockey, and Atlanta in the WNBA. He also attempted to open the doors to girls and women as baseball players, creating the Colorado Silver Bullets professional baseball team of elite women athletes, which traveled the world for four years playing against men's amateur, college and minor league professional teams. The team was managed by former Braves star pitcher Phil Niekro. His involvement with the Silver Bullets led to a 14-year stint on the board of Billie Jean King's Women's Sports Foundation and six years as the only male on its executive committee. The WSF is the chief lobbying organization in favor of equal education opportunities, including sports, for women in colleges and universities.

Money Handling Mistakes Pt 2 – Belk on Business – Episode 186 There are many mistakes a business owner can and does make, some which could be fatal to the business either directly through mismanagement of the finances or indirectly through failure to follow proper internal controls or following basics of asset protection. Best to run finances in a proactive manner, not a reactive one making tweaks and not major adjustments which can shake a business and its culture to the core. 1) Ignoring the numbers – for many businesses, especially in the first phase of business ignores the accounting/finance function of the business until either they are needed for loans or taxes. This results usually in overpaying taxes, inability to have an understanding of what is and isn't working in your business and an inability to plan effectively towards profitability and scaling. Can also result in making poor financial decisions such as purchasing items just for tax deduction purposes or purchasing what the business doesn't really need. 2) Not budgeting or cash flow planning – budget is developed around goals/projections along with cash flow projections so to be able to hit metrics, determination of when or will we run out of cash, when can we hit savings metrics for scale or improvements, cash flow needed for taxes, equipment, personnel, savings and crisis planning. Cash needed for emergencies and opportunities (this usually should be reflected in retained earnings, not debt). 3) Failure to review financial reports – lack of internal controls around accounting and finance – review payables, receivables, bank statements and credit card statements periodically. Review helps reduce potential for fraud. When is my Business Considered a Hobby? – Belk on Business – Episode 181 IRS Section 183 outlines what activities not engaged in for profit and the tax implications. The IRS states that a business has to be carried out “in a businesslike manner” with “complete and accurate books and records,” says the IRS. The taxpayer must put in time and effort “to show they intend to make it profitable,” and has to depend on income from the activity for their livelihood. Section 183 says that if an activity is a not-for-profit hobby, then the taxpayer can't take deductions for it. The IRS also says a business must show a net profit for three out of its first five years of operation, otherwise the agency considers it a hobby for tax purposes. This rule is not the only deciding factor when making the analysis. There are other considerations such as: Did they make a profit from a similar activity in the past? Does their current endeavor profit in some years and by how much? What is the activity and why are they doing it? A New York Times article from this summer pointed out what a lot of us probably know already. Social media is a lot less ”social” these days. Between the political commentary and all the ads… many brands are struggling to connect – or reconnect – with their audiences. People and brands are once again seeing the value in creative and engaging IN REAL LIFE events. They key to their success, of course, is the “creative and engaging” part. Stephanie Bingham parlayed a stint with “The Cartoon Network” and Belk into her own agency that specializes in events that do just that. She's our guest today on the BrandBuilders's Podcast.
