Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! We're celebrating Black movies of the 1970s on the main show all throughout February and into the first week of March due to our big milestone 250th episode falling right in the middle of the month! With last week's episode focussing on Sidney Poitier's directorial debut with 'Buck and The Preacher', it's the turn of another Black screen icon in the directorial debuting chair this week as Morgan and Jeannine talk the action crime comedy COTTON COMES TO HARLEM (1970) starring Godfrey Cambridge, Raymond St. Jacques, Calvin Lockhart, Judy Pace and Redd Foxx! As much a love letter to Harlem as it is an entirely entertaining mix of a great neo-noir detective story and a precursor to the more outlandish action found in the major Blaxploitation hits that would come in the following few years. Six more 70's movie reviews for you, and they are more disconnected than usual. It doesn't matter but usually our movie reviews have at least a lil thread that combines at least some of them, consciously or unconsciously. I guess 2 of these do, gawd. Anyway let's start. First up is (Cotton comes to Harlem 1970), an early blaxploitation film that is as weird as the term blaxploitation. We are ongoing in our efforts to unpack the term Blaxploitation, but we try to unpack this movie here today as best we can. Next up (The Great white hope 1970). Here we have Darth Vader and Jane Alexander telling the true story of boxer Jack Johnson. Enter racism. Movin along we have Gravedigger and Coffin back in (Come back Charleston blue 1972) I guess it's a sequel? Next is (Burnt offerings 1976). Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Rocky's coach, and the mighty mom from Butterflies are free, are coming and going from a house stuck in the twilight zone. Almost done, and here's (Sea gypsies 1978- AKA Shipwrecked) A hippie takes his two kids, a reporter, and a stowaway on a sailing trip around the world. I bet it's gonna go great. Ending things today we begin our journey through the 3 70's film of German Director Margarethe Von Trotta. We oddly go 2/1/3 soooooo here's (The second awakening of Christina Klages 1978), and I can at least say here that the films premise is a ten outta ten for me. Thanks for listening folks. Please give us all the stars and write us a nice review about how you are glad there's three 70's movies scientists out there plugging away, and doin their best to make sense out the giant acid trip that was most 70's movies.

In which my buddy, Sonny Chiba, joins me in reviewing COTTON COMES TO HARLEM (1970), which is available on Epix, Prime, Paramount+ and Pluto TV. The film, written by Ossie Davis and Arnold Perl, from the novel by Chester Himes, is directed by Ossie Davis and was his directorial debut. The story follows two cops in Harlem, Grave Digger Jones (Godfrey Cambridge) and Coffin Ed Johnson (Raymond St. Jacques) as they try to find out exactly who came and committed a robbery in broad daylight during a fundraising event hosted by Rev. Deke O'Malley (Calvin Lockhart). The film mixes clever dialogue and humor that still lands, decent action sequences and social commentary to weave a unique story of these 2 Harlem cops who are racing against time to solve the crime and make sure those in the community that have been taken advantage of are afforded justice. The film has a run time of 1 h 37 m, and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Shout out to Sonny for doing the podcast and please check him out at the following places: https://www.instagram.com/chibaindyartist/ https://app.fanbase.app/chibaindyartist https://www.indyplanet.com/bullets-blunts-and-bullshh-vol-1 https://twitter.com/chiba37 Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support

When Nicole Franklin first met Adger Cowans years ago in New York City she knew other being an extremely talented artist and photographer, he has a welcoming spirit that has put thousands of his subjects through the years at ease. With Adger on the mic, both Bryant and Nicole have a wonderful time recalling his childhood in Columbus, OH, weekend trips to New York to hear jazz greats eventually moving in with his mentor Gordon Parks, and falling out of his seat twice when it was time for a gorgeous nude model to disrobe. From encounters with the Fondas on the set of Golden Pond, to Sidney Poitier running out of the room when setting eyes on Adger's photograph of Diahann Carroll in a bikini, to punching a colleague in the face just to turn around and ask for a signature making Adger the first Black photographer in International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.  Adger Cowans is the supreme example of a life well lived and now, in his mid-80s, he's busier than ever.  For more with Adger, visit his website @ AdgerCowans.com and pick up his book Art in the Moment: Life and Times of Adger Cowans. This episode first aired on KBLA Talk 1580 in Los Angeles, CA.Welcome to Before You Go Season 3!

Chris is joined by OughtFiveFilm's Mike Wallace to kick off Blaxploitation Month with a look at a film that more than just a blaxploitation film: Cotton Comes to Harlem. The film stars Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques as Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, two black cops who are tasked with retrieving $87,000 that was conned out of the good folks in Harlem. It's a blaxploitation film in the vein of The French Connection and other '70s crime films and stands on its own as such.As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach, Eric Kniss at @tychomagnetics and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. Hollywood has a rich history of turning great pieces of literature into fantastically mediocre movies. Today we discuss some of our favorite books that, given the right treatment, would shine on the silver screen, but more likely would wilt under a coat of Hollywood gloss, sheen and superstardom. Discussed will be Charles Bukowski's Ham on Rye, Charles Willeford's The Burnt Orange Heresy, Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, and Chester Himes' Cotton Comes To Harlem.
